Abstract:Objectives: We tried to develop a more concise health literacy scale for Chinese older adults.Methods: A draft scale based on the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) was developed, and revised by experts. We conducted a pilot study to test the readability and establish a standard inquiry method within 10 residents. We tested the validity and internal consistency using a field test with 3,739 participants.Results: Overall standardized Cronbach's a of Chinese Health Literacy Scale (CHLS) was 0.86 and that of each dimension ranged from 0.69 to 0.81. Nearly all dimensions had satisfactory factor loadings (0.33-0.98). The correlation coefficient between the score of each item and its dimension ranged from 0.59 to 0.92.Conclusions: The performance of CHLS was almost the same as the HLQ but more concise. It might play a role in reflecting the health literacy of older adults in China and further promoting their health.(c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Abstract:Health literacy is closely related to health status. Measuring public health literacy levels helps to warn of health status and manage health problems through timely interventions. The items of relevant evaluation tools are complex and numerous in China, and there is no recognized health literacy brief scale for the whole population. To translate the 12-item short-form health literacy scale (HLS-SF12) and test the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the HLS-SF12 in the Chinese population.

Abstract:OBJECTIVETo evaluate the validity and reliability of a Chinese version on the Short-Form Health Survey Scale (SF-36) among elderly population.METHODSQuestionnaire including SF-36 Chinese version was administered in a cross-sectional study from October to December 2007. 4241 elderly people over 60 years old from rural and urban area in Zhejiang province were face-to-face interviewed by well-trained investigators, and then analyses on correlation, reliability, factors, t-test and one-way ANOVA were made to evaluate on reliability and validity of the scale.RESULTSThe SF-36 Chinese version had good split-half reliability (r = 0.91, P < 0.001) and all the internal consistency Cronbach's alpha coefficients exceeded 0.8 except for VT (alpha = 0.65), SF (alpha = 0.65) and MH (alpha = 0.40). The correlative coefficients between each item and its domain were all greater than the 0.4 thresholds except item 9 - 2, and they were greater than the correlation between the item and other domains for all but item 9 - 8. These results demonstrated that the SF-36 Chinese version had good convergent validity and discriminant validity. The distribution of 35 items in 6 public factors (the cumulative variance = 67.04%) extracted from them was consistent with the basic conceived concept. All domains except MH had good validity to discriminate different categories.CONCLUSIONThe SF-36 Chinese version had good reliability and validity. It was acceptable for the evaluation on quality of life in elderly population, but the reliability and validity of MH were relative low and the items such as 9 - 2, 9 - 8 in MH and 3 - 1 in PF were not suitable for Chinese elderly population.

Abstract:The development of health literacy in China is relatively slow, and there are fewer health literacy scales, which is difficult to measure. Therefore, this study aims to promote the development of health literacy in China through the translation and application of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q47). The scale was translated into Chinese, back-translated, culturally adapted and finally subjected to psychometric evaluation. A multi-stage stratified sampling method was used to select 2504 residents to test the reliability and validity of a questionnaire on health literacy. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to evaluate the validity of the results, and the back consistency was calculated by Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The EFA revealed that health care, disease prevention and health promotion explained 78.68% of the total variance in health literacy. The scale and its subscales demonstrated strong internal consistency, with high Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranging from 0.947 to 0.983. CFA confirmed the three-factor model's goodness-of-fit for the Chinese population. The dimensions of healthcare, disease prevention and health promotion showed high convergent validity with an average variance extracted values ranging from 0.52 to 0.60 and composite reliability values ranging from 0.94 to 0.96. The reliable and valid Chinese version of the HLS-EU-Q47 (HLS19-Q47-CN) developed and evaluated in this study is an important tool for assessing health literacy levels in the Chinese population. Furthermore, as this tool has global applicability, it has the potential to assess health literacy levels across different countries, enabling practical international comparisons.
Reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the instrument of health literacy competencies for health professionals

Abstract:Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of an instrument of health literacy competencies for health professionals. Design: This study utilized a cross-sectional design. Methods: Authorization was obtained from the authors of the original scale to translate the scale and perform cross-cultural debugging. From August 2020 to November 2020, 573 health professionals were randomly selected from primary, secondary and tertiary hospitals in Huzhou to examine the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of an instrument of health literacy competencies for health professionals. Results: The Chinese version of the scale contains 49 items. The internal consistency Cronbach's α was 0.958 for the total scale and 0.791-0.956 for each dimension. The test-retest reliability was 0.973. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the fitness degree of the model is good (χ2 /df = 1.347, IFI = 0.924, TLI = 0.913, CFI = 0.922, GFI = 0.841, AGFI = 0.815, RMR = 0.011, RMSEA = 0.035). Conclusion: The Chinese version of an instrument of health literacy competencies is reliable and valid, which is a credible and effective tool to assess the level of health literacy competencies in Chinese health professionals. Patient or public contribution: Health professionals with good health literacy competencies can provide patient-specific treatment and guidance to promote healthy outcomes for patients.

Abstract:Background With the release of the Health China Action (2019–2030), family health is receiving increasing attention from experts and scholars. But at present, there is no family health scale in China that involves multidimensional and interdisciplinary commonality. Aim To translate a Short Form of the Family Health Scale (FHS-SF) and to test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the FHS-SF. Method A Short Form of the Family Health Scale was Chinese translated with the consent of the original author. A total of 8912 residents were surveyed in 120 cities across China using a multistage sampling method, with gender, ethnicity, and education level as quota variables. Seven hundred fifty participants were selected to participate in this study, and 44 participants were randomly selected to be retested 1 month later. Results The Cronbach's alpha of the Chinese version of a Short Form the Family Health Scale was 0.83,the Cronbach's alphas of the four subscales ranged from 0.70 to 0.90, the retest reliability of the scale was 0.75, the standardized factor loadings of the validation factor analysis were above 0.50, GFI = 0.98; NFI = 0.97; RFI = 0.95; RMSEA = 0.07, all within acceptable limits. Conclusion The Chinese version of a Short Form the Family Health Scale has good reliability and validity and can be used to assess the level of family health of Chinese residents.

Abstract:The purpose of this study aimed to develop and validate the Food and Nutrition Literacy Questionnaire for Chinese adults (FNLQ). The dimensions and core components of Food and Nutrition Literacy were constructed though literature review and qualitative consensus study. A cross-sectional survey of 8510 participants was conducted. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined by internal consistency, the construct validity was assessed by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and the content validity was assessed by the Pearson correlation coefficient. From the literature review and qualitative methods, 20 core components and 50 questions of the FNLQ were developed, including 1 dimension of knowledge and 3 practice dimensions (ability of selection, preparing food and eating). The overall FNLQ questionnaire had good reliability and validity (Cronbach's α = 0.893, χ2/DF = 4.750, RMSEA = 0.048, GFI = 0.891 and AGFI = 0.876). The average FNLQ score of all participants was (64.08 ± 12.77), and the score for the knowledge and understanding dimension was higher than that for the practice dimensions. In addition, 80 was set as the nutritional literacy threshold, and only 12.2% met this threshold in this survey. Sociodemographic and health status characteristics were predictors of FNLQ (R2 = 0.287, F = 244.132, p < 0.01). In conclusion, the FNLQ built in this study had good validity and reliability. It could be considered as a reliable tool to assess Food and Nutrition Literacy of Chinese adults.

Development and Psychometric Tests of a Chinese Version of the SF-36 Health Survey Scales.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To develop and evaluate scaling and scoring assumptions, and the reliability and the validity of a Chinese version of the SF-36 scales.METHODS:A multi-stage mixed sampling procedure was used to select a representative sample of the general population. The sample size was 1 000 households. All family members of a selected household, aged 18 and older, completed a survey by self-administration. Formal psychometric methods for testing assumptions underlying item scoring and scale construction were used according to the standard procedure of the IQOLA Project.RESULTS:Of the 1 985 collected questionnaires, 1 972 were qualified. Of them, 1 688 (85.6%) were respondents. 1 316 respondents answered all 36 items, while the remaining (372 respondents) answered with one or several missing responses. Among the non-respondents, 65.5% were illiteracy or quasi-illiteracy. The assumption of equal intervals was violated for the VT and MH scales. The recoded item values were used to calculate scale scores. The clustering and ordering of the item means were approximately the same as that of the source version and other two Chinese versions. The items in each scale had similar standard deviations except those in the PF, BP, SF scales. The correlations between an item and its hypothesized scale were identical for all except the SF and VT scales. The scaling success rates of convergent validity were 0% for the SF scale, 75% for the VT scale, and 100% for the other six scales. The scaling success rates of discriminat validity ranged from 87.5% to 100% for all scales except for the SF scale. The Cronbach' alpha coefficients of internal consistency reliability ranged from 0.72 to 0.88, which were satisfactory for group comparison except 0.39 for the SF scale and 0.66 for the VT scale. The two-weeks test-retest reliability coefficient ranged from 0.66 to 0.94. Factor analysis identified two principal components: a "physical" factor and a "mental" factor. Taken together, these two factors could be used to explain 56.3% of the total variance.CONCLUSION:The Chinese version of the SF-36 Health Survey Scale has achieved conceptual equivalence and satisfied the psychometric scaling assumptions well enough to warrant wide use in China. Known-groups validity will give more meaningful evidences of the validity of the Chinese SF-36 scales.
Translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of the Chinese version of the COVID-19 health literacy scale in nursing students

Abstract:Background: Effective communication is an essential component of high-quality nursing care. Health literacy, the ability to access, describe, evaluate and apply health information to make informed decisions, is an important component of effective communication in nursing. Nurses, including student nurses, with good levels of health literacy (HL) are well positioned to communicate reliable public health-related information effectively, at times like the COVID-19 global pandemic. At this time, many nursing students have been at the frontline of patient education, as such, it would be expected that they have high levels of HL. However, it has been suggested that there is the need to improve HL levels in nursing students. Aims: The aim of this study was to analyse the structure of item response of a back translated Chinese version of the COVID-HLS-Q22 questionnaire and to assess the coronavirus-related HLof Chinese speaking nursing students in Hong Kong using the COVID-HLS-Q22-CN. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 97 undergraduate nursing students was conducted using two self-reported questionnaires. The HLS-EU-16 scale, with face validity already established, was used to assess scale equivalence Using a cross-over study approach, student participants were randomly assigned in sequential order. The validation process was performed in five phases: direct translation, translation synthesis, back translation, consolidation with experts, and testing with the students. The intended outcome of this study will be a formally tested model of the Chinese version of the COVID-HLS-Q22-CN, that can be replicated in Chinese population. Results: Factorial equivalence was present across language versions in both questionnaires. Internal consistency was excellent for COVID-HLS-Q22-CN (coefficient alpha for Chinese version of questionnaire, 0.957 and English version, 0.953). This suggested that the four subscale are stable across the two questionnaires. Conclusion: The COVID-HLS-Q22-CN has proven to be a feasible and reliable tool in the assessment of Hong Kong based Chinese speaking nursing students. The emergence of issues around COVID-related HL further highlights the need to include the teaching of critical health literacy skills within nurse education, preparing the healthcare professionals of the future for public health emergencies.
Revision and an Empirical Evaluation of the Chinese Patient Health Literacy Scale

Abstract:Objective To modify the Chinese Patient Health Literacy Scale (CPHLS) for improving the reliability and validity of the scale. Methods From January to May 2021, the CPHLS was preliminarily revised by expert consultation and the revised electronic scale was employed to measure the health literacy of 2 808 outpatients randomly selected at 14 hospitals in eastern, central and western China. SPSS 23.0 was utilized for Cronbach′s α calculation and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to further improve the revised scale; AMOS 23.0 was applied to build a structural equation model (SEM) to test the validity of the scale. Results The Cronbach′s α coefficient of the preliminarily revised CPHLS was 0.841 and the α coefficients of the scale′s five dimensions were 0.751 for concept of medical science, 0.787 for disease self-management skills, 0.568 for medical common sense, 0.725 for self-efficacy , and 0.412 for medical information cognition, respectively, with an overall cumulative proportion of variance of 62.538%. Three common factors of the revised scale (e.g. self-efficacy, disease self-management skills and medical common sense) were extracted according to the results of EFA. After deleting four original items, the α coefficient of the revised scale was raised to 0.845, the α coefficients of the three dimensions were 0.926, 0.831, and 0.753 and the cumulative proportion of variance was 67.228%. The SEM analysis on the revised scale demonstrated that the dimension-specific factor load capability ranged 0.53 – 0.90 and the constructed SEM is of good overall goodness of fit, with the root mean square residual (RMR) of 0.083, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) of 0.086, goodness-of-fit index (GFI) of 0.926, adjusted goodness-of-fit index (AGFI) of 0.891, normed fit index (NFI) of 0.928, relative fit index (RFI) of 0.909, incremental fit index (IFI) of 0.931, the Tacker-Lewis index/non-normed fit index (TLI/NNFI) of 0.913, comparative fit index (CFI) of 0.931, parsimony goodness-of-fit index (PGFI) of 0.631, parsimony-adjusted normed fit index (PNFI) of 0.737, parsimony-adjusted comparative fit index (PCFI) of 0.740, and the critical number (CN) of 171, respectively. Conclusion The revised Chinese Patient Health Literacy Scale is of good internal consistency reliability and construct validity, indicating a potential application in the evaluation on patients' health literacy.
Cross-Cultural Validation of the High Blood Pressure Health Literacy Scale in a Chinese Community

Abstract:Background: Considering the importance of health literacy (HL) for the maximum yield from the hypertension control programs, development of a reliable and valid instrument of hypertension-related HL is critical. This study aimed to translate and validate the High Blood Pressure-Health Literacy Scale (HBP-HLS) into Chinese (C-HBP-HLS) and evaluate its psychometric properties in Chinese context. Method: Between June 2013 and January 2014, a cross-sectional study was conducted among recruited hypertensive patients belonging to the Han and Kazakh-Chinese communities in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China. Results: A pilot sample (n = 242) was selected for the exploratory factor analysis of the translated and modified instrument. Another sample (n = 308) was recruited for the confirmatory factor analysis. C-HBP-HLS consisted of five dimensions (Print Health Literacy, Medication Label, Understanding Ability, Newest Vital Sign Test, and Avoiding Food Allergy) containing 15 items, accounting for 77.7% of the total variance. The 5-factor model demonstrated a good overall fit. The scale-level content validity index was 0.85. Cronbach's alpha of the overall scale was 0.78 and test-retest reliability was 0.96. Education level had a strong positive correlation with the scores for items Q1, Q2, and Q3(r = 0.481, 0.492, 0.475, respectively). Health Literacy scores among Kazakh patients were significantly lower than Han (7.13±7.90 vs. 30.10±13.42, Z = -14.573, P<0.001). Conclusion: C-HBP-HLS demonstrated suitable factor structure and robust psychometric properties for measuring health literacy level among hypertensive patients in China.

Abstract:Background The rapid proliferation of web-based information on health and health care has profoundly changed individuals’ health-seeking behaviors, with individuals choosing the internet as their first source of information on their health conditions before seeking professional advice. However, barriers to the evaluation of people’s eHealth literacy present some difficulties for decision makers with respect to encouraging and empowering patients to use web-based resources. Objective This study aims to examine the psychometric properties of a simplified Chinese version of the eHealth Literacy Scale (SC-eHEALS). Methods Data used for analysis were obtained from a cross-sectional multicenter survey. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to examine the structure of the SC-eHEALS. Correlations between the SC-eHEALS and ICEpop capability measure for adults (ICECAP-A) items and overall health status were estimated to assess the convergent validity. Internal consistency reliability was confirmed using Cronbach alpha (α), McDonald omega (ω), and split-half reliability (λ). A general partial credit model was used to perform the item response theory (IRT) analysis. Item difficulty, discrimination, and fit were reported. Item-category characteristic curves (ICCs) and item and test information curves were used to graphically assess the validity and reliability based on the IRT analysis. Differential item functioning (DIF) was used to check for possible item bias on gender and age. Results A total of 574 respondents from 5 cities in China completed the SC-eHEALS. CFA confirmed that the one-factor model was acceptable. The internal consistency reliability was good, with α=0.96, ω=0.92, and λ=0.96. The item-total correlation coefficients ranged between 0.86 and 0.91. Items 8 and 4 showed the lowest and highest mean scores, respectively. The correlation coefficients between the SC-eHEALS and ICECAP-A items and overall health status were significant, but the strength was mild. The discrimination of SC-eHEALS items ranged between 2.63 and 5.42. ICCs indicated that the order of categories’ thresholds for all items was as expected. In total, 70% of the information provided by SC-eHEALS was below the average level of the latent trait. DIF was found for item 6 on age. Conclusions The SC-eHEALS has been demonstrated to have good psychometric properties and can therefore be used to evaluate people’s eHealth literacy in China.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to develop a short version of the Chinese Resident Health Literacy Scale focused on older adults in China, and further assess the reliability and validity of this short version. Methods: The data was from a cross-sectional community-based older adults health survey conducted in 2020. The total of 5,829 older adults were randomly divided into two parts using for the simplification and assessment of the scale, respectively. Item Response Theory (IRT) and Differential Item Functioning (DIF) were used for item analysis and scale simplification. Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega were used to assess the reliability and three factors Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to assess the validity, which were compared to the original version. Moreover, Multi-group Confirmatory Factor Analysis (MCFA) was used to test the model invariance of the short version across groups of gender, age groups, level of education, and cognitive status. Results: The simplified version consisted of 27 items taken from 50 original items, of them 11 items from the dimension of knowledge and attitudes, 9 items from the dimension of behavior and lifestyle, and 7 items from the dimension of health-related skills. The overall Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega were both 0.87 (95%CI: 0.86–0.88). The goodness-of-fits of CFA in simplified version were still acceptable in CFI, TLI, GFI, and RMSEA, even improved in CFI, TLI, and GFI compared to those of original version. Also, the model was stable and invariant in MCFA across gender, cognitive status, and educational level groups. Conclusion: In this study, we formed a simplified instrument for measuring health literacy focused on older adults in China. This short version might be more suitable for the priority recommendation in extended tracking of the dynamic changes on the levels of health literacy in the whole life cycle in public health settings. Further research might be to identify the cut-off values to distinguish the older adults with different levels of health literacy.

Methods The eHealth Literacy Scale( eHEALS) was translated into Chinese version and revised after qualitative interviews and pre-investigation. A total of 1163 college students were investigated by using the scale. Conclusion The revised ehealth literacy scale for college students( Chinese version) has acceptable constructional validity,content validity and internal consistency,which can be applied assess the ehealth literacy among college students.
Validation of the digital health literacy assessment among the university students in China

Abstract:Purpose: With the development of the internet, digital health literacy (DHL) has become increasingly important for managing health. Consequently, various digital health literacy scales have been created for different groups. The purpose of this study was to verify the reliability and validity of the simplified Chinese version of the Digital Health Literacy Assessment (DHLA) scale among university students in China. Method: Snowball sampling was used to recruit the participants via an online platform (Wenjuan.com), and finally 304 university students were included in the survey. Demographic information and the status of DHL were collected through the online questionnaire. Cronbach's alpha and split-half reliability were used to test the internal consistency of the scale, while the structural validity was verified by exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Additionally, the convergence of the scale was tested by composite reliability (CR) and average variance extracted (AVE). Result: Two dimensions were generated from 10 entries in the scale, named Self-rated Digital Health Literacy and Trust Degree of Online Health Information, respectively. The Cronbach's alpha and split-half reliability of the total scale were 0.912 and 0.828, while the Cronbach's alpha of the two dimensions were 0.913 and 0.830, respectively. The structural validity-related indexes of the scale met the standards (RMSEA = 0.079, GFI = 0.943, AGFI = 0.902, CFI = 0.971). In each dimension, the CR and AVE also reached critical values (CR > 0.7 and AVE > 0.5). Conclusion: The scale had high reliability and validity, indicating the simplified Chinese DHLA scale could be used to evaluate the DHL of university students in China.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Patients with stroke usually use smartphones to obtain online information to maintain their health. But their ability to identify, evaluate and apply this information is still unknown.AIM: This study was designed to examine the reliability and validity of the electronic Health Literacy Scale among patients with stroke in China.DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional survey.METHODS: A demographic questionnaire, the electronic Health Literacy Scale (e-HLS) and the eHealth Literacy Scale (eHEALS) were administered to a sample of 648 patients with ischemic stroke recruited from December 2020 to March 2021 in a tertiary hospital.RESULTS: The Cronbach'α coefficient on the e-HLS-CHI was 0.907. Kappa consistency coefficient of test-retest reliability was 0.691 (p < .05). Three factors were extracted by Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), accounting for 90.84% of the total variance. Confirmatory Factory Analysis (CFA) revealed that three factors of e-HLS-CHI fit well (NFI = 0.979, RFI = 0.955, IFI = 0.987, TLI = 0.972, CFI = 0.987, RMSEA = 0.070, CMIN/DF = 2.586). Good simultaneous validity was suggested by the positive correlation of 0.94 (p < .001) between the e-HLS-CHI and eHEALS. When using eHEALS as the standard, the area under the ROC curve of e-HLS-CHI was 0.896 (95% CI: 0.831-0.960, p < .001). The sensitivity and specificity were 97.8% and 70.4% respectively.CONCLUSIONS: The e-HLS can be used to evaluate electronic health literacy of patients with stroke in China after translation and cultural adaption.

Abstract:Objective\r\nTo translate the English version of Fatigue, Resistance, Ambulation, Illness, and Loss (FRAIL) for elder patients into Chinese, and to test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of FRAIL.\r\n\r\n\r\nMethods\r\nAfter obtaining authorization from the developer, the FRAIL was translated and culturally adapted into Chinese version. The reliability and validity of the Chinese version of FRAIL were tested in 179 patients.\r\n\r\n\r\nResults\r\nThe Cronbach α coefficient was 0.826. The test-retest reliability was 0.828. Two nurses used the scale to evaluate the consistency of the results and the Kappa coefficient was 0.892. The content validity index of the I-CVI ranged from 0.93 to 1.00, and the S-CVI/Ave index was 0.98. The correlations coefficients between each dimension score and the total score ranged from 0.637 to 0.865(P\u003c0.01). and the correlations coefficients between each dimension score ranged from 0.277 to 0.817(P\u003c0.01, P\u003c0.05), The KMO index of factor analysis was 0.766. Five factors were extracted from exploratory factor analysis, and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 77.572%. The load value of each item on the corresponding factor was 0.560 to 0.889.\r\n\r\n\r\nConclusions\r\nThe Chinese version of FRAIL has been proved to have good reliability and validity. Abstract:Objective: To explore the reliabililty and consistency of a health literacy scale for chronic patients. Methods: We translated and revised the Health Literacy Management Scale (HeLMS) which was established by professor Jordan in Melbourne University of Australia. Items that not conform to Chinese custom were revised, thus 28 items from the 29 original scale item was retained. Multistage stratified random sample was used to choose subjects in some district in Shanghai. The total subject number was 430.Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, content and construct validities were surveyed. Results: The total Cronbach coefficient was 0.894, the dimension Cronbach coefficient was between 0.857-0.940.Test-retest reliability was 0.683, and criterion validity was 0.240.Kaisex-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) statistic in factor analysis was 0.887 and four common factors predicted 68.25% of the total variance. Conclusions: The health literacy scale for chronic disease patients has a relatively good reliabililty and consistency.
Measuring Functional, Interactive and Critical Health Literacy of Chinese Secondary School Students: Reliable, Valid and Feasible?

Abstract:Health literacy is an increasingly important topic in the global context. In mainland China, health literacy measures mainly focus on health knowledge and practices or on the functional domain for adolescents. However, little is known about interactive and critical domains. This study aimed to adopt a skills-based and three-domain (functional, interactive and critical) instrument to measure health literacy in Chinese adolescents and to examine the status and determinants of each domain. Using a systematic review, the eight-item Health Literacy Assessment Tool (HLAT-8) was selected and translated from English to Chinese (c-HLAT-8). Following the translation process, a cross-sectional study was conducted in four secondary schools in Beijing, China. A total of 650 students in Years 7–9 were recruited to complete a self-administered questionnaire that assessed socio-demographics, self-efficacy, social support, school environment, community environment and health literacy. Results showed that the c-HLAT-8 had satisfactory reliability (Cronbach’s α = 0.79; intra-class correlation coefficient = 0.72) and strong validity (translation validity index (TVI) ≥0.95; χ2/ df = 3.388, p < 0.001; comparative fit index = 0.975, Tucker and Lewis’s index of fit = 0.945, normed fit index = 0.965, root mean error of approximation = 0.061; scores on the c-HLAT-8 were moderately correlated with the Health Literacy Study-Taiwan, but weakly with the Newest Vital Sign). Chinese students had an average score of 26.37 (±5.89) for the c-HLAT-8. When the determinants of each domain of health literacy were examined, social support was the strongest predictor of interactive and critical health literacy. On the contrary, self-efficacy and school environment played more dominant roles in predicting functional health literacy. The c-HLAT-8 was demonstrated to be a reliable, valid and feasible instrument for measuring functional, interactive and critical health literacy among Chinese students. The current findings indicate that increasing self-efficacy, social support and creating supportive environments are important for promoting health literacy in secondary school settings in China.

Abstract:Objectives: This study translated the short nutrition literacy scale for young adults (18-35 years) into Chinese, examined its reliability and validity, and analyzed its influencing factors. Methods: The scale was translated using a modified Brislin translation model. A convenience sample of 508 cases was selected for the survey. Content validity, structural validity, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and test-retest reliability were used to evaluate the scale's reliability and validity. To screen the factors influencing nutrition literacy in young people. Results: The Chinese version of the Item-Level Content Validity Index (I-CVI) was 0.833 ~ 1, and the Scale-Level Content Validity Index/Average (S-CVI/Ave) was 0.908. The cumulative variance contribution of the scale was 51.029%, and the model was generally well-fitted. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient and retest reliability of the scale were 0.826 and 0.818. The results showed that the level of education, mother's education, nutrition-related courses, and frequency of attention to nutritional health information were the factors influencing the nutritional literacy of young people. Conclusion: The Chinese version of the S-NutLit Scale can effectively assess the nutrients of young Chinese people. Low levels of education, low levels of education of mothers, lack of exposure to nutrition-related courses, and low frequency of attention to nutritional health information can lead to lower levels of nutritional literacy among young people.
