Abstract:Multiple competing hypotheses attribute the evolution of the suite of traits that distinguish primates from their closest relatives, including forward-facing eyes, which create a wide field of binocular vision, to specific behavioral and ecological factors. The grasp-leaping hypothesis suggests that the evolution of these traits in basal primates was driven by the demands of a form of leaping locomotion unique to primates. Whether the grasp-leaping hypothesis provides a viable mechanism for the evolution of primates' forward-facing eyes remains untested. To determine whether grasp-leaping locomotion may have contributed to driving the evolution of primates' forward-facing eyes, the importance of vision within the binocular field for this type of leaping was evaluated experimentally in Cheirogaleus medius , one of the cheirogaleid primate species considered reasonable living analogs of the earliest primates. Availability of binocular visual cues was experimentally restricted using a head-mounted blinder that narrowed the binocular visual field without altering the total visual field. Animals altered their launch behavior, reduced their horizontal leap speed, and were significantly more likely to select paths that offered the shortest available leaps when their binocular field was restricted. Restriction of binocular cue availability also significantly increased the probability of adverse landings even when statistically controlling for potentially confounding variables such as leap distance, horizontal leap speed, learning effects, etc. These results suggest a functional mechanism by which selection for improved grasp-leaping could also have contributed to the evolution of forward-facing eyes in the earliest crown primates.

Abstract:Primates as a group possess large, forward‐facing eyes that support relatively high visual acuity. The evolution of forward‐facing eyes increased the size of the binocular visual field, and is functionally tied to an improved ability to precisely assess distances using binocular cues. Comparative data suggest that forward‐facing eyes and a large binocular visual field probably first evolved in the context of visually guided manual acquisition of small prey items. Diurnal anthropoids exhibit the highest visual acuities recorded for mammals. This very high acuity is based on a distinctive suite of anatomical adaptations, including small corneas relative to eye size, filters that reduce chromatic aberration, and an all‐cone retinal fovea. The evolution of these primate visual adaptations may have had important consequences for other features of primate sensory ecology, including reductions in the functionality of the main and accessory olfactory systems.
The endocast of the Night Parrot (Pezoporus occidentalis) reveals insights into its sensory ecology and the evolution of nocturnality in birds

Abstract:Abstract The Night Parrot ( Pezoporus occidentalis ) is a rare, nocturnal parrot species that has largely escaped scientific investigation due to its behaviour and habitat preferences. Recent field studies have revealed some insights into Night Parrot behaviour, but nothing is known of its sensory abilities. Here, we used μCT scans of an intact Night Parrot specimen to determine if its visual system shares similarities with other nocturnal species. The endocast of the Night Parrot revealed relatively small optic lobes and optic foramina, especially compared with closely related grass parakeets, but no apparent differences in orbit dimensions. Our data suggests that the Night Parrot likely has lower visual acuity than most other parrots, including its congener, the Eastern Ground Parrot ( P. wallicus ). We propose that the visual system of the Night Parrot might represent a compromise between the need to see under low light conditions and the visual acuity required to detect predators, forage, and fly. Based on the endocast and optic foramen measurements, the Night Parrot fits into a common pattern of decreased retinal input to the optic lobes in birds that should be explored more thoroughly in extant and extinct species.

Abstract:Nocturnal animals that rely on their visual system for foraging, mating, and navigation usually exhibit specific traits associated with living in scotopic conditions. Most nocturnal birds have several visual specializations, such as enlarged eyes and an increased orbital convergence. However, the actual role of binocular vision in nocturnal foraging is still debated. Nightjars (Aves: Caprimulgidae) are predators that actively pursue and capture flying insects in crepuscular and nocturnal environments, mainly using a conspicuous “sit-and-wait” tactic on which pursuit begins with an insect flying over the bird that sits on the ground. In this study, we describe the visual system of the band-winged nightjar (Systellura longirostris), with emphasis on anatomical features previously described as relevant for nocturnal birds. Orbit convergence, determined by 3D scanning of the skull, was 73.28°. The visual field, determined by ophthalmoscopic reflex, exhibits an area of maximum binocular overlap of 42°, and it is dorsally oriented. The eyes showed a nocturnal-like normalized corneal aperture/axial length index. Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) were relatively scant, and distributed in an unusual oblique-band pattern, with higher concentrations in the ventrotemporal quadrant. Together, these results indicate that the band-winged nightjar exhibits a retinal specialization associated with the binocular area of their dorsal visual field, a relevant area for pursuit triggering and prey attacks. The RGC distribution observed is unusual among birds, but similar to that of some visually dependent insectivorous bats, suggesting that those features might be convergent in relation to feeding strategies.
Biomechanical and morphological determinants of maximal jumping performance in callitrichine monkeys

Abstract:Jumping is a crucial behavior in fitness-critical activities including locomotion, resource acquisition, courtship displays, and predator avoidance. In primates, paleontological evidence suggests selection for enhanced jumping ability during their early evolution. However, our interpretation of the fossil record remains limited, as no studies have explicitly linked levels of jumping performance with interspecific skeletal variation. We used force platform analyses to generate biomechanical data on maximal jumping performance in three genera of callitrichine monkeys falling along a continuum of jumping propensity: Callimico (relatively high propensity jumper), Saguinus (intermediate jumping propensity), and Callithrix (relatively low propensity jumper). Individuals performed vertical jumps to perches of increasing height within a custom-built tower. We coupled performance data with high-resolution μCT data quantifying bony features thought to reflect jumping ability. Levels of maximal performance between species - e.g., maximal takeoff velocity of the center of mass (CoM) - parallel established gradients of jumping propensity. Both biomechanical analysis of jumping performance determinants (e.g., CoM displacement, maximal force production, peak mechanical power during push-off) and multivariate analyses of bony hindlimb morphology highlight different mechanical strategies among taxa. For instance, Callimico, which has relatively long hindlimbs, followed a strategy of fully extending of the limbs to maximize CoM displacement - rather than force production - during push-off. In contrast, relatively shorter-limbed Callithrix depended mostly on relatively high push-off forces. Overall, these results suggest that leaping performance is at least partially associated with correlated anatomical and behavioral adaptations, suggesting the possibility of better inferring performance from the fossil record.
Orbit size and estimated eye size in dinosaurs and other archosaurs and their implications for the evolution of visual capabilities

Abstract:Vision is one of the most important senses for animals, allowing them to interact with their environment and with further implications for evolutionary histories. However, relevant soft tissues, such as the eye and associated structures, are not preserved in fossil vertebrates, limiting our knowledge of their visual capabilities. Here, we quantified absolute and relative orbit size for 400 species of dinosaurs and other extinct archosaurs using linear measurements of the preserved skeletal elements as a proxy for visual capabilities. Our results demonstrate that the orbit makes up on average 20% of skull size with a strong and consistent correlation across all sampled groups. This trend is largely independent of temporal distribution, species richness, and phylogeny. In fact, relative orbit size is narrowly constrained and did not surpass 45% of skull size, suggesting physiological and functional controls. Estimated eye size was found to be absolutely larger in herbivores, whereas carnivores tended to have smaller eyes absolutely and compared with skull size. Relatively large eyes only occurred in small-bodied species and vice versa. However, eye size alone was not sufficient to discriminate between different activity patterns or to characterize visual capabilities in detail.

Jumping performance in tree squirrels: Insights into primate evolution

Abstract:Morphological traits suggesting powerful jumping abilities are characteristic of early crown primate fossils. Because tree squirrels lack certain 'primatelike' grasping features but frequently travel on the narrow terminal branches of trees, they make a viable extant model for an early stage of primate evolution. Here, we explore biomechanical determinants of jumping performance in the arboreal Eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis, n = 3) as a greater understanding of the biomechanical strategies that squirrels use to modulate jumping performance could inform theories of selection for increased jumping ability during early primate evolution. We assessed vertical jumping performance by using instrumented force platforms upon which were mounted launching supports of various sizes, allowing us to test the influence of substrate diameter on jumping kinetics and performance. We used standard ergometric methods to quantify jumping parameters (e.g., takeoff velocity, total displacement, peak mechanical power) from force platform data during push-off. We found that tree squirrels display divergent mechanical strategies according to the type of substrate, prioritizing force production on flat ground versus center of mass displacement on narrower poles. As jumping represents a significant part of the locomotor behavior of most primates, we suggest that jumping from small arboreal substrates may have acted as a potential driver of the selection for elongated hindlimb segments in primates, allowing the center of mass to be accelerated over a longer distance-and thereby reducing the need for high substrate reaction forces.
Vision in avian emberizid foragers: maximizing both binocular vision and fronto-lateral visual acuity

Abstract:Avian species vary in their visual system configuration, but previous studies have often compared single visual traits between 2-3 distantly related species. However, birds use different visual dimensions that cannot be maximized simultaneously to meet different perceptual demands, potentially leading to trade-offs between visual traits. We studied the degree of inter-specific variation in multiple visual traits related to foraging and anti-predator behaviors in nine species of closely related emberizid sparrows, controlling for phylogenetic effects. Emberizid sparrows maximize binocular vision, even seeing their bill tips, which may enhance the detection of prey and facilitate food handling. Sparrows have a single retinal center of acute vision (i.e., fovea) projecting fronto-laterally (but not into the binocular field). The foveal projection close to the edge of the binocular field may shorten the time to gather and process both monocular and binocular visual information from the foraging substrate. Contrary to previous work, we found that species with larger visual fields had higher visual acuity, which may compensate for larger blind spots (i.e., pectens) above the center of acute vision, enhancing predator detection. Finally, species with a steeper change in ganglion cell density across the retina had higher eye movement amplitude likely due to a more pronounced reduction in visual resolution away from the fovea, which would need to be moved around more frequently. The visual configuration of emberizid passive prey foragers is substantially different from that of previously studied avian groups (e.g., sit-and-wait and tactile foragers).

Abstract:SUMMARY The purpose of this study was to investigate the pattern of coordinations of the hindlimb joints in the world's smallest living primate (Microcebus murinus). The sequencing and timing of joint rotations have been analyzed in five adult males performing maximal leaping from a take-off immobile platform to their own wooden nest. Angular kinematics of hip, knee, angle and metatarso-phalangeal (MT) joints were deduced from high-speed X-ray films in the sagittal plane of the animals. The body mass center (BMC) of the lemurs was assimilated to their iliac crest. The maximal airborne performance of the lemurs was 0.33±0.04 m, which represented 2.55±0.36 times their snout–vent length. Take-off instant occurred 72±7 ms after the start of the push-off, with a BMC velocity of 3.23±0.48 m s−1, oriented 55±14 deg. with the horizontal plane. The kinematic analysis of the joints and musculo-tendon architecture of the M. murinus plantar flexors pointed out mechanical power amplifier mechanisms (i.e. stretch-shortening cycle of hindlimb muscles and proximo-to-distal sequence).

Abstract:The findings of this study suggest that enlarged hindlimbs improve escape performance by allowing rodents to more efficiently utilize vertical jumping as an antipredator escape response. Predation is a fundamental selective pressure on animal morphology, as morphology is directly linked with physical performance and evasion. Bipedal heteromyid rodents, which are characterized by unique morphological traits such as enlarged hindlimbs, appear to be more successful than sympatric quadrupedal rodents at escaping predators such as snakes and owls, but no studies have directly compared the escape performance of bipedal and quadrupedal rodents. We used simulated predator attacks to compare the evasive jumping ability of bipedal kangaroo rats (Dipodomys) to that of three quadrupedal rodent groups—pocket mice (Chaetodipus), woodrats (Neotoma), and ground squirrels (Otospermophilus). Jumping performance of pocket mice was remarkably similar to that of kangaroo rats, which may be driven by their shared anatomical features (such as enlarged hindlimb muscles) and facilitated by their relatively small body size. Woodrats and ground squirrels, in contrast, almost never jumped as a startle response, and they took longer to perform evasive escape maneuvers than the heteromyid species (kangaroo rats and pocket mice). Among the heteromyids, take‐off velocity was the only jump performance metric that differed significantly between species. These results support the idea that bipedal body plans facilitate vertical leaping in larger‐bodied rodents as a means of predator escape and that vertical leaping likely translates to better evasion success.

Snakes as agents of evolutionary change in primate brains

Abstract:Current hypotheses that use visually guided reaching and grasping to explain orbital convergence, visual specialization, and brain expansion in primates are open to question now that neurological evidence reveals no correlation between orbital convergence and the visual pathway in the brain that is associated with reaching and grasping. An alternative hypothesis proposed here posits that snakes were ultimately responsible for these defining primate characteristics. Snakes have a long, shared evolutionary existence with crown-group placental mammals and were likely to have been their first predators. Mammals are conservative in the structures of the brain that are involved in vigilance, fear, and learning and memory associated with fearful stimuli, e.g., predators. Some of these areas have expanded in primates and are more strongly connected to visual systems. However, primates vary in the extent of brain expansion. This variation is coincident with variation in evolutionary co-existence with the more recently evolved venomous snakes. Malagasy prosimians have never co-existed with venomous snakes, New World monkeys (platyrrhines) have had interrupted co-existence with venomous snakes, and Old World monkeys and apes (catarrhines) have had continuous co-existence with venomous snakes. The koniocellular visual pathway, arising from the retina and connecting to the lateral geniculate nucleus, the superior colliculus, and the pulvinar, has expanded along with the parvocellular pathway, a visual pathway that is involved with color and object recognition. I suggest that expansion of these pathways co-occurred, with the koniocellular pathway being crucially involved (among other tasks) in pre-attentional visual detection of fearful stimuli, including snakes, and the parvocellular pathway being involved (among other tasks) in protecting the brain from increasingly greater metabolic demands to evolve the neural capacity to detect such stimuli quickly. A diet that included fruits or nectar (though not to the exclusion of arthropods), which provided sugars as a neuroprotectant, may have been a required preadaptation for the expansion of such metabolically active brains. Taxonomic differences in evolutionary exposure to venomous snakes are associated with similar taxonomic differences in rates of evolution in cytochrome oxidase genes and in the metabolic activity of cytochrome oxidase proteins in at least some visual areas in the brains of primates. Raptors that specialize in eating snakes have larger eyes and greater binocularity than more generalized raptors, and provide non-mammalian models for snakes as a selective pressure on primate visual systems. These models, along with evidence from paleobiogeography, neuroscience, ecology, behavior, and immunology, suggest that the evolutionary arms race begun by constrictors early in mammalian evolution continued with venomous snakes. Whereas other mammals responded by evolving physiological resistance to snake venoms, anthropoids responded by enhancing their ability to detect snakes visually before the strike.
Leaping Behaviors and the Functional Morphology of Strepsirhine Primate Long Bones

Abstract:Recent examinations of the functional morphology underlying strepsirhine primate leaping behaviors have identified several cross-sectional features of long bones that can be associated with interspecific differences in leaping frequency and/or body size. In this study the cross-sectional parameters of strepsirhine fore- and hindlimb long bones are examined relative to body weight, bone length, phylogenetic affiliation, leaping frequency and landing kinematics. Humeral cross-sectional morphology is conservative relative to both phylogenetic and functional groupings. As a result, humeral cross-sectional area should prove useful as a size surrogate in future comparative studies. After the effects of bone length and body weight are controlled, ‘frequent’ leapers have stronger and more rigid femoral and tibial midshafts than do ‘less-frequent’ leapers. Landing style is conflated with leaping frequency and it is difficult to explain morphological variation exclusively by either leaping frequency or landing style. Further behavioral research, especially field study of locomotion, is needed to disentangle the effects of these mechanically important aspects of leaping locomotion.

Comparative Genomics Provides Insights into Adaptive Evolution in Tactile-Foraging Birds

Abstract:Tactile-foraging birds have evolved an enlarged principal sensory nucleus (PrV) but smaller brain regions related to the visual system, which reflects the difference in sensory dependence. The "trade-off" may exist between different senses in tactile foragers, as well as between corresponding sensory-processing areas in the brain. We explored the mechanism underlying the adaptive evolution of sensory systems in three tactile foragers (kiwi, mallard, and crested ibis). The results showed that olfaction-related genes in kiwi and mallard and hearing-related genes in crested ibis were expanded, indicating they may also have sensitive olfaction or hearing, respectively. However, some genes required for visual development were positively selected or had convergent amino acid substitutions in all three tactile branches, and it seems to show the possibility of visual degradation. In addition, we may provide a new visual-degradation candidate gene PDLIM1 who suffered dense convergent amino acid substitutions within the ZM domain. At last, two genes responsible for regulating the proliferation and differentiation of neuronal progenitor cells may play roles in determining the relative sizes of sensory areas in brain. This exploration offers insight into the relationship between specialized tactile-forging behavior and the evolution of sensory abilities and brain structures.
Early euprimates already had a diverse locomotor repertoire: Evidence from ankle bone morphology

Abstract:The morphological adaptations of euprimates have been linked to their origin and early evolution in an arboreal environment. However, the ancestral and early locomotor repertoire of this group remains contentious. Although some tarsal bones like the astragalus and the calcaneus have been thoroughly studied, the navicular remains poorly studied despite its potential implications for foot mobility. Here, we evaluate early euprimate locomotion by assessing the shape of the navicular-an important component of the midtarsal region of the foot-using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics in relation to quantified locomotor repertoire in a wide data set of extant primates. We also reconstruct the locomotor repertoire of representatives of the major early primate lineages with a novel phylogenetically informed discriminant analysis and characterize the changes that occurred in the navicular during the archaic primate-euprimate transition. To do so, we included in our study an extensive sample of naviculars (36 specimens) belonging to different species of adapiforms, omomyiforms, and plesiadapiforms. Our results indicate that navicular shape embeds a strong functional signal, allowing us to infer the type of locomotion of extinct primates. We demonstrate that early euprimates displayed a diverse locomotor behavior, although they did not reach the level of specialization of some living forms. Finally, we show that the navicular bone experienced substantial reorganization throughout the archaic primate-euprimate transition, supporting the major functional role of the tarsus during early primate evolution. This study demonstrates that navicular shape can be used as a reliable proxy for primate locomotor behavior. In addition, it sheds light on the diverse locomotor behavior of early primates as well as on the archaic primate-euprimate transition, which involved profound morphological changes within the tarsus, including the navicular bone.
Anomalous binocular vision in African Harrier-Hawks

Abstract:An animal's visual field is the three-dimensional space around its head from which it can extract visual information at any instant1. Bird visual fields vary markedly between species, and this variation is likely to be driven primarily by foraging ecology1,2,3. The binocular visual field is the region in which the visual fields of the two eyes overlap; thus, objects in the binocular field are imaged by both eyes simultaneously. The binocular field plays a pivotal role in the detection of symmetrical optic flow-fields, providing almost instantaneous information on the direction of travel and the time to contact a target towards which the head or feet is travelling; thus, information from the binocular field is crucial in guiding key foraging behaviours2,3. Here, we demonstrate an unusual visual field and binocular extent above the head in African Harrier-Hawks, also known as Gymnogenes (Polyboroides typus) compared to 18 other members of the Accipitridae4,5. We argue that the observed visual field can be attributed to the unusual and specific foraging behaviour of African Harrier-Hawks.

Abstract:Primates spend on average half as much energy as other placental mammals while expressing a wide range of lifestyles. However, little is known about how primates adapt their rate of energy use in the context of natural environmental variations. Using doubly labelled water, behavioral and accelerometric methods, we measured the total energy expenditure (TEE) and body composition of a population of Eulemur fulvus (N = 12) living in an agroforest in Mayotte. We show that the TEE of this medium-sized cathemeral primate is one of the lowest recorded to date in eutherians. Regression models show that individual variation in the rate of energy use is predicted by fat-free mass, body size, thigh thickness and maximum temperature. TEE is positively correlated with increasing temperature, suggesting that thermoregulation is an important component of the energy budget of this frugivorous species. Mass-specific TEE is only 10% lower than that of a closely related species previously studied in a gallery forest, consistent with the assertion that TEE varies within narrow physiological limits. As lemur communities include many species with unique thermoregulatory adaptations, circadian and/or seasonal temperature variations may have constituted a major selective pressure on the evolution of lemur metabolic strategies.

Significance of Evolutionary Lags in the Primate Brain Size/Body Size Relationship

Abstract:INTRODUCTION The original brain lag hypothesis proposed that primate brain evolution depended on spare energy derivative of savings of scale enabled by increasing body size. Deaner & Nunn [1] concluded that, in fact, there was no evidence for a brain lag. However, their result may have been due to a number of possible confounds in their analysis. METHODS I revisit their analysis to test for potential confounds using updated datasets. I also ask how primates paid for the energy costs incurred by changes in brain and body mass, and whether the impetus for these changes was predation risk. Finally, I ask whether the observed patterns explain the brain/body size ratio trajectory observed in fossil hominins. RESULTS I show that using statistically more appropriate statistics and updated data yields a significant brain lag effect. However, contrary to the original brain lag hypothesis, the brain/body ratio does not converge back on the allometric regression line, but continues to evolve beyond it. Increases in brain size are correlated with exploiting large group size rather than body size as the principal defence against predation risk, with significant growth in brain size (but not body size) only being possible if species adopted a more frugivorous diet. Finally, I show that hominins followed a similar trajectory from an australopithecine baseline that fell on the relevant allometric regression. CONCLUSION The brain lag effect is much more complicated than the original hypothesis proposed, with a distinctive switch from body to brain over evolutionary time.

Eye morphology contributes to the ecology and evolution of the aquatic avifauna

Abstract:Aquatic birds are notable among the global avifauna for living in environments exposed to large amounts of light. Despite growing evidence that visual adaptations to light underly the ecology and evolution of the avian tree of life, no comprehensive comparative analysis of visual acuity as approximated by eyes size exists for the global aquatic avifauna. Here, I use Stanley Ritland's unpublished dataset of measurements for axial length collected from museum specimens to explore the ecology and evolution of eye size variation for half of the aquatic avifauna (N = 464 species). After correcting for body mass allometry and incorporating phylogenetic relationships, aquatic species had significantly smaller eyes compared to terrestrial species. Furthermore, species using hyperopic foraging manoeuvres, exhibiting carnivorous and insectivorous diets, and displaying nocturnal behaviour had larger eyes. Plunge-divers (e.g. boobies and tropic birds) and stalkers (e.g. herons) had the largest relative eye sizes, especially species identifying prey at higher altitudes or longer distances. Underwater pursuit-divers foraging at greater depths had larger eyes, likely due to the dramatic attenuation of light in the deep ocean. Overall, residual eye size was phylogenetically conserved (l = 0.94), with phylogeny alone explaining 62% of residual eye size variation. Collectively, these results suggest that the relatively bright environments found in aquatic ecosystems negate the adaptive benefits of costly metabolic investments associated with developing and maintaining larger eyes, while also reducing the potential occurrence of disability glare. Strong correlations between eye size and foraging ecology in different aquatic environments corroborate similar comparative studies of terrestrial birds and underscore the central role that vision has played in driving the ecology and evolution of the global avifauna.

Abstract:Vision is a complex sensory system that requires coordination among cellular and morphological traits, and it remains unclear how functional relationships among traits interact with ecological selective pressures to shape the evolution of vision. Many species have specialized high visual acuity regions in the retina defined by patterns of ganglion cell density, which may evolve in response to ecological conditions. For example, ganglion cell density can increase radially towards the center of the retina to form an area centralis, which is thought to improve acuity towards the center of the visual field in predators. Another example is the horizontal streak, where ganglion cells are dense across the center of the retina, which is thought to be beneficial in horizon-dominated habitats. At the morphological level, many have proposed that predation selects for high orbit convergence angles, or forward-facing eyes. We tested these hypotheses in a phylogenetic framework across eutherian mammals and only found support for the association between the horizontal streak and horizon-dominated habitats. We also tested if retinal specializations evolve in response to orbit convergence angles. We found that horizontal streaks were associated with side-facing eyes, which may both facilitate panoramic vision. Previous studies observed that some species with side-facing eyes have an area centralis shifted towards the temporal side of the retina, such that the high acuity region would project forward, but this relationship had not been tested quantitatively. We found that the temporal distance of the area centralis from the center of the retina was inversely correlated with orbit convergence, as predicted. Our work shows a strong relationship between orbit convergence and retinal specializations. We find support that both visual ecology and functional interactions among traits play important roles in the evolution of some ocular traits across mammals.

Abstract:Our understanding of locomotor evolution in anthropoid primates has been limited to those taxa for which good postcranial fossil material and appropriate modern analogues are available. We report the results of an analysis of semicircular canal size variation in 16 fossil anthropoid species dating from the Late Eocene to the Late Miocene, and use these data to reconstruct evolutionary changes in locomotor adaptations in anthropoid primates over the last 35 Ma. Phylogenetically informed regression analyses of semicircular canal size reveal three important aspects of anthropoid locomotor evolution: (i) the earliest anthropoid primates engaged in relatively slow locomotor behaviours, suggesting that this was the basal anthropoid pattern; (ii) platyrrhines from the Miocene of South America were relatively agile compared with earlier anthropoids; and (iii) while the last common ancestor of cercopithecoids and hominoids likely was relatively slow like earlier stem catarrhines, the results suggest that the basal crown catarrhine may have been a relatively agile animal. The latter scenario would indicate that hominoids of the later Miocene secondarily derived their relatively slow locomotor repertoires.
