Abstract:Objectives: Acquiring the ability to identify deviations in dental aesthetic norms has been considered as an essential skill for the development of a dental professional. The timing and quality of this development of aesthetic perception has not been explicitly discussed in the dental education literature. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of dental training on the development of smile aesthetic perception, and to compare this perception between dental students and medical students in a similar cohort. Methods: One-hundred dental and medical students were invited to complete a self-administered questionnaire, designed to evaluate eight images; using a visual analogue scale (1 least attractive; 100 most attractive). The students rated the smile aesthetics of one ‘model’ smile image, and seven digitally modified smiles representing major variations in smile features. Data were analyzed using the independent student’s t-test. Results: forty-four male and fifty-five female participants were successfully recruited, with a response rate of 99%. Dental students’ ratings of smile aesthetics were significantly lower than medical students for seven of the eight images (p < 0.05). This difference was greatest for the model smile image, and least for the diminutive lateral incisors image. There were no statistically significant gender-related differences. Conclusions: Within the limitation of this study, the dental curriculum has a significant impact on developing students’ perception of dental aesthetics. Longitudinal studies with larger samples sizes, are needed to examine if progress through the dental curriculum affects students’ perception of dental aesthetics.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Current concepts of beauty are increasingly subjective, influenced by the viewpoints of others. The aim of the study was to evaluate divergences in the perception of dental appearance and smile esthetics among patients, laypersons and dental practitioners. The study goals were to evaluate the influence of age, sex, education and dental specialty on the participants’ judgment and to identify the values of different esthetic criteria. Patients sample included 50 patients who responded to a dental appearance questionnaire (DAQ). Two frontal photographs were taken, one during a smile and one with retracted lips. Laypersons and dentists were asked to evaluate both photographs using a Linear Scale from (0-10), where 0 represent (absolutely unaesthetic) and 10 represent (absolutely aesthetic). One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t -test analysis were measured for each group. Most patients in the sample expressed satisfaction with most aspects of their smiles and dental appearance. Among laypersons (including 488 participants), 47 pictures “with lips” out of 50 had higher mean aesthetic scores compared to pictures “without lips”. Among the dentist sample, 90 dentists’ perception towards the esthetic smile and dental appearance for photos “with lips” and “without lips” were the same for 23 out of 50 patients. Perception of smile aesthetics differed between patients, laypersons and dentists. Several factors can contribute to shape the perception of smile aesthetic. AIM To compare the perception of dental aesthetic among patients, laypersons, and professional dentists, to evaluate the impact of age, sex, educational background, and income on the judgments made by laypersons, to assess the variations in experience, specialty, age, and sex on professional dentists’ judgment, and to evaluate the role of lips, skin shade and tooth shade in different participants’ judgments. An Analysis of the Esthetic Proportions of Anterior Maxillary Teeth in a School of Dentistry in Ar Rass

Abstract:Background: There are several facets of esthetic dentistry, such as the shade and color of teeth, but the geometric or mathematical proportion aspect is among the most crucial. Theories such as the golden percentage, golden proportion, and recurring esthetic dental are presented in esthetic dentistry. Material and methods: The present prospective observational research was undertaken between January 2022 and January 2023. The volunteers' cohort included individuals aged 18 to 45 years without periodontal disease, free of carious cavities and restorations in the anterior teeth, with a complete set of anterior teeth and at least one quadrant of well-aligned anterior maxillary teeth. We utilized an iPhone mobile lens (Apple Inc., Cupertino, CA) to take photos. The maximum circumference on the mesial and distal contacts of anterior teeth was used as a reference point for measurements. After data collection, a customized Excel spreadsheet (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, WA) was formulated to facilitate mathematical analysis. Results: This study was conducted on 60 dental students, 43 being male subjects and 17 female subjects. The best results in this study were seen in relation to perceived central incisor width and perceived lateral width as seen from the front. It was found that the unidentified group appears to be the most relevant group with 33 participants (52%), and Preston's proportion was the least frequent with 0 participants (0%). As expected, males appeared to have larger anterior teeth dimensions than females. Conclusions: The actual correlation between maxillary teeth width as perceived from the front view is unidentified. Golden percentage and modified Golden percentage ranked second and third. Preston's proportion did not exist. Based on our study, a new formula for calculating the relation between maxillary anterior teeth width could be raised and should be tested on a wider population.

Abstract:Introduction: When planning esthetic dental treatments, understanding smile preferences is important for dental professionals. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of selected smile characteristics on the attractiveness of young Saudis as assessed by Saudi laypersons and explore gender-preferred changes in smile attractiveness. Methodology: This observational study assessed the dynamic smile attractiveness of 168 Saudi individuals (84 males and 84 females), selected through non-probability convenience sampling. Dynamic smiles were elicited by viewing comedic content and captured with a camera standardized for consistent positioning. Videos were edited and adjusted to images, and the frames with the most pronounced smiles were chosen. The intra-rater reliability was assessed using intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) and Cohen's kappa tests (κ). The highest and lowest 25th percentiles were categorized as attractive and unattractive smiles, respectively, on the visual analog scale (VAS) by laypersons. Six smile characteristics - anterior smile line, smile arc, upper lip curvature, posterior teeth displayed, smile index, and smile symmetry - were quantitatively evaluated from these images for each participant and classified into attractive and unattractive groups based on laypersons' VAS evaluations. Continuous variables were tested with the Mann-Whitney U test, and for the categorical variables, the Chi-square test was applied. The significance was set at 5%. Results: The four randomly selected out of the 22 raters had good VAS reliability; ICCs varied from 0.661 to 0.94, with an average of 0.737, and Cohen's kappa tests for smile characteristics showed values from 0.617 to 0.89. Good agreement was also found with the smile index, with ICCs of 0.775, and dynamic smile symmetry, with ICCs of 0.872. Laypersons rated female smiles as more attractive compared to male smiles (P = 0.004). Low or average anterior smile lines (P = 0.001 for males; P = 0.03 for females), parallel smile arcs (P = 0.001 for males; P = 0.02 for females), and higher smile indexes (P = 0.001 for males; P = 0.004 for females) were significantly attractive, showing no significant gender differences. Conclusions: Laypersons reliably rated the young Saudis' dynamic smiles as attractive. Of the rated smile characteristics, those with a low or average anterior smile line, parallel smile arcs, and a larger smile index were deemed more attractive. This study's findings show no significant gender differences in the impact of the studied smile characteristics on attractiveness. This study's findings can help dental professionals customize treatment plans that meet patients' expectations.
Perception of Professional Female College Students Towards Smile arc Types and Outlook about their Appearance

Abstract:Aims and objectives: The aim of this study is to assess the perception of female students about the type of smile arc as well as their outlook about different parameters of esthetics. Materials and methods: A study was conducted among female students of King Khalid University, Abha, Saudi Arabia. One section of the questionnaire contained pictures having three types of smile arc wherein the respondents had to select any response ranging from 1 to 4 (1 for beautiful, 2 for good, 3 for average, and 4 for poor); besides it included 12 questions regarding the viewpoints of respondents about their smile and dental esthetics. The collected data were analyzed using the statistical package for social services version 16.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA, 2001). Results: The dental students accounted for least mean score of 1.807 ± 0.8174 for consonant smile arc while it was 2.692 ± 0.8053 and 2.235 ± 0.9074 for information technology (IT) and medical students, respectively. When the individuals were asked whether they had a pleasant smile or not; only 53.8% of the dental students, 76.9% of the IT students, and 66.7% of the medical students responded positively. Conclusion: It was concluded that most of the female dental students were able to identify the consonant smile arc as being more beautiful than the flat and reverse smile arcs whereas lesser medical and IT students could perceive the smile arcs in the same manner. It was also observed that almost all the study participants were quite conscious about their smile attractiveness and dental esthetics.
Smile microesthetics as perceived by dental professionals and laypersons

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate and compare the perception of different dental professionals and laypersons toward altered gingival characteristics (microesthetics) and to identify those characteristics that are most negatively and positively rated. Materials and methods: A smiling photograph of a female dental student was selected and digitally manipulated to create changes in different microesthetic parameters. These altered images were rated by the following five groups: 120 orthodontists, 45 periodontists, 49 prosthodontists, 130 general dentists, and 172 laypersons. Smile esthetics scores were calculated, and comparisons between groups were performed using the univariate general linear model. Results: The presence of black triangles between the upper incisors was the most negatively rated, and the ideal smile was the most positively rated. Significant differences were detected in the rating scores among the different study groups (P < .05). Orthodontists, prosthodontists, and general dentists scored the presence of a black triangle in the smile as the least attractive, whereas periodontists and laypersons perceived the inflamed gingiva and pigmented gingiva as the least attractive, respectively. Dental specialists tended to give the altered smile images lower scores than the laypersons. Conclusions: The ideal smile and that with black triangles between the upper incisors were rated as the most and the least attractive smiles, respectively. Orthodontists, prosthodontists, and general dentists scored the presence of black triangles in the smile as the least attractive, whereas periodontists and laypersons perceived the inflamed gingiva and pigmented gingiva as the least attractive smiles, respectively. Dental specialists tended to give the altered smile images lower scores than the laypersons.
Comparison of pleasant and unpleasant smile characteristics in the perception of the laypeople in an Iranian population

Abstract:Introduction: This study aimed to compare the characteristics of pleasant and unpleasant smiles from the perception of laypeople. Methods: Two-hundred posed smile photographs were obtained from adult participants with no anomaly, restoration, or severe crowding and spacing in anterior teeth. Photographs were shown to 26 judges to give each photograph a score for attractiveness. Upper and lower quartiles for the most and least rated smiles were determined, and variables including gingival display, smile arc, midline deviation, buccal corridor, smile width, tooth rotation or malposition, diastema, upper and lower vermilion show, and tooth form were measured. Independent-sample t test and Pearson chi-square analysis were used to determine the differences between the pleasant and unpleasant groups for quantitative and qualitative variables, respectively. The linear regression model revealed variables with the most significant impact on the mean score. Results: All quantitative and qualitative variables except tooth form significantly differed between pleasant and unpleasant smile groups (P <0.05). The consonant smile arc was associated with an increase of 12.59% in mean scores compared with the inconsonant smile arc. Each tooth reported with malposition was correlated with a decrease of 9.37% in the scores. In the same way, each 1-mm increase in midline diastema and occlusal cant coincided with a drop of 8.73% and 3.59% in scores, respectively. Conclusions: The results of this study suggested that smile arc, tooth malposition, midline diastema, and occlusal plane canting had the most impact on smile esthetics and should be given priority by orthodontists in the treatment plan of choice.
Assessment of Aesthetic Smile Components in Patients With Skeletal Class II Vertical and Horizontal Growth Patterns Compared to Class I Cases

Abstract:Introduction In orthodontics, having a beautiful smile is very important. It is frequently the main driving force behind people's efforts to enhance their oral health and professional opportunities. Orthodontic and dental treatment planning might benefit greatly when evaluating the aesthetic components of a patient's smile in individuals with varying skeletal growth patterns. In order to help orthodontists achieve the best possible functional and aesthetic results for their patients, the eight elements of a balanced smile are essential to orthodontic therapy. This study aims to evaluate, in comparison to Skeletal Class I Average instances, eight balanced smile components in patients with Skeletal Class II Vertical and Horizontal growth patterns. Methodology A total of 45 patients aged 14-30 were selected from the Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics Out-Patient Department (OPD). They were divided into three groups: Skeletal Class I Average, Skeletal Class II Vertical, and Skeletal Class II Horizontal cases based on their malocclusion type. Patients were made to smile in response to a joke or social conversation and their photos were analyzed using Photopea software (Photopea Inc., Prague, Czech Republic) to determine the eight components of a balanced smile. Result Three skeletal classes' worth of smile components were examined in this study. Lip line measurements varied greatly; the highest mean measurement was found in the Skeletal Class II Vertical group (p-value < 0.01). There were no noteworthy correlations found between smile arc and upper lip curvature. Measurements of lateral negative space did not show any significant group differences. On the other hand, a significant correlation was seen in smile symmetry, where asymmetrical smiles were more prevalent in Skeletal Classes I and II Vertical groups (p-value is 0.00072). While arch symmetry suggested a potential relationship between the groups, dental midline alignment revealed possible associations. Conclusion Assessing the aesthetic components of smiles in patients with varying skeletal growth patterns, i.e., contrasting Class II Vertical and Horizontal growth patterns with Class I Average cases, provides valuable information about the connection between smile aesthetics and facial skeletal structure. The results suggest that when compared to Class I typical instances, Skeletal Class II Vertical and Horizontal growth patterns may show clear variations in certain aspects of an attractive smile. Comprehending these variations is essential for devising treatment strategies for patients, and additional investigation is needed. In order to obtain optimal aesthetic outcomes, treatment strategies should strive to optimize smile aesthetics while addressing personalized treatment plans that take into account the patient's unique facial features, smiling preferences, and functional requirements.
Evaluation of "golden proportion" in individuals with an esthetic smile

Abstract:Background: One of the most important tasks in esthetic dentistry is creating harmonious proportions between the widths of maxillary anterior teeth when restoring or replacing these teeth. The "golden proportion" is a main guideline introduced in this field. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the existence of the golden proportion between the widths of the maxillary anterior teeth in individuals with an esthetic smile. Materials and methods: This study was conducted with 157 dental students (75 women and 82 men), with ages ranging from 18 to 30 years. Students whose natural smile did not develop any visual tension with regard to the study's and their own criteria were selected as having esthetic smile. An image measurement program was used to measure the apparent mesiodistal widths of six maxillary anterior teeth on the scanned photographs of these subjects. The existence of the golden proportion was investigated in the width ratios of maxillary anterior teeth. Results: The golden proportion was not found to exist between perceived maxillary anterior teeth widths of individuals with an esthetic smile. Conclusion: The golden proportion is not a common factor in esthetic smiles. Clinical significance: This article suggests considering the dentofacial specificities of each individual and also the wide variety of natural teeth proportions when restoring or replacing the maxillary anterior teeth. However, individual cultural characteristics and perception of beauty must be considered.

Abstract:The desire for an attractive smile is a major reason people seek orthodontic and other forms of cosmetic dental treatment. An understanding of the features of a smile is important for dental diagnosis and treatment planning. The common methods of smile analysis rely on the visual analysis of smile aesthetics using posed photographs, and videos and gathering information about smiles through patient questionnaires and diaries. Recent emerging trends utilise artificial intelligence and automated systems capable of detecting and analysing smiles using motion capture, computer vision, computer graphics, infrared and thermal imaging, electromyography, and optical sensors. This review aims to provide an up-to-date summary of emerging trends in smile analysis in dentistry and orthodontics. Understanding the advantages and limitations of emerging tools for smile analysis will enable clinicians to provide tailored and up-to-date treatment plans.

Abstract:Background: Smile esthetics can be subjective. This study aims to assess the effect of culture/geographic location on judging smile esthetics by comparing the perception of smile characteristics between American laypersons (Western culture) and Iranians (Eastern). Materials and methods: One hundred residents from each country were recruited for this analytical cross-sectional study. A frontal picture of a posed smile with standard norms which are mentioned in the Contemporary Orthodontics textbook by William R. Proffit was selected. Adobe Photoshop 7 was used to alter midline diastema, gingival display (GD), maxillary midline-to-face discrepancy, buccal corridor (BC), and smile arc. Images were given to groups to determine the most attractive and acceptable smile. Data were analyzed by Chi-square, Mann-Whitney, and Spearman correlation coefficient in SPSS-22 (α =0.05). Results: Americans were less critical in judging diastema (P < 0.001), GD (P = 0.013), and BC (P = 0.004) for smile attractiveness than Iranians. No difference was between the two groups in choosing the acceptability threshold and determining the most attractive smile except for BC (P = 0.002). Conclusion: Overall, Americans were more tolerant of variations in smile characteristics than Iranians. Both groups agreed on most smiles. Therefore, it seems that it is reasonable to use similar standards for smile characteristics while considering the small differences.
Perceptual Difference of Smile Aesthetics Between 2-Dimensional Photographs and 3-Dimensional Dentofacial Images: a Cross-Sectional Study.

Abstract:BackgroundThe aim of this study was to compare the perceptual difference of smile aesthetics between 2D photographs and 3D dentofacial images as perceived by orthodontists and graduate students.MethodsForty-eight subjects finished orthodontic treatment were recruited with 2D photographs of frontal, oblique and lateral views as well as 3D dentofacial images. Twelve senior orthodontists and 13 postgraduate students were asked to rate the 2D and 3D smile simulations based on visual analog scale (VAS) and to vote for smile features that affect the attractiveness of smile. At the end, they completed a questionnaire about their views on different smile simulations. Wilcoxon signed-rank, Bland-Altman analysis, and multiple linear regression were used to compare the ratings and votes of smile perception between raters and between records.ResultsOrthodontists and postgraduate students rated smile consistently with 2D photographs, while orthodontists tended to give a higher rate for unattractive smiles and a lower rate for attractive smiles with 3D dentofacial images. The 3D dentofacial images were rated significantly lower than 2D photographs and the voting of most of the smile features showed significant negative main effect on VAS scores, while the effect of demographic characteristics of raters, voting on visible width of upper dentition and buccal corridor was not significant. In addition, a significant negative main effect of commissure and facial profile was found on the rating discrepancy between 2D and 3D images.ConclusionsSenior orthodontists tend to perceived 3D images more conservatively in smile evaluation. 3D dentofacial images were rated lower than 2D photographs and most of the smile features affect the aesthetic perception of smile. The perceptual difference of commissure and facial profile contributed to the lower ratings in 3D dentofacial images.

Morphological features of smile attractiveness and related factors influence perception and gingival aesthetic parameters

Abstract:Introduction: In addition to understanding the basic standards of a smile and patient's opinion, dentists should take into account smile aesthetics, an essential factor for optimal outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the factors that affect the perception of an aesthetic smile and determine its morphological characteristics and measure the gingival aesthetic parameters. Methods: In all, 200 Vietnamese aged 18-35 years were recruited to have their spontaneous smiles captured. These smile images were assessed by 50 laypersons and 50 dentists using a visual analogue scale measurement. The images were analysed to evaluate perceptions of evaluators, determine smile attractiveness, and measure gingival aesthetics. Results: The difference in the judgements of laypersons and dentists, males and females, and laypersons aged 18-25 and 26-35 years were nonsignificant. High or average anterior smile line, parallel smile arc, upward upper lip curvature, second premolars as the posterior-most teeth displayed, smile index of 5.23-5.63, and dynamic smile symmetry of 1 were scored highly on smile attractiveness. The following maxillary gingival aesthetic parameters were preferred: gingival zenith (GZ) of the canine 0.72-0.75 mm apical to the GZ of the central incisor; GZ of the lateral incisor 0.66 mm coronal to the gingival line; gingival line angle of ∼87°; for the central incisor, lateral incisor, and canines, distance from the GZ to the long axis of 1, 0.4, and 0 mm, respectively; interdental papilla height of 4.25, 3.60, and 3.85 mm, respectively; ratio of the distance from the GZ and the interdental papilla tip to the incisal edge of ∼1.74-1.77 mm. Conclusions: Factors including profession, gender, and age of evaluators had almost no impact on their perception of aesthetics. Smile attractiveness characteristics and gingival aesthetic parameters have clinical applicability for patient care.
Relationship between perception of smile esthetics and orthodontic treatment in Spanish patients

Abstract:One of the main objectives of orthodontic treatment is to achieve an esthetic smile. This study set out to analyze differences in the perception of smile esthetics among patients before and after receiving orthodontic treatment. 250 Spanish patients analyzed a single photograph in which, by means of computer software, midline diastema, black triangle, gingival margin of the left central incisor, and gingival ("gummy") smile were altered. Each patient analyzed these images before and after undergoing orthodontic treatment. Patients scored the photographs on a scale from 1 to 10. Statistical analyses of each group's level of perception were carried out, identifying significant differences in evaluations before and after treatment, and in relation to subjects' gender and age. Patients presented significant differences in the esthetic perception of midline diastema and gummy smile anomalies after they had completed orthodontic treatment. Gender influenced the perception of smile esthetics, whereby women were significantly more critical of midline diastema, black triangle and gingival margin of the upper central incisor than men. The age variable also showed significant differences in the perception of midline diastema and black triangle anomalies. The perception of smile esthetics of some dental anomalies changes as a result of orthodontic treatment. Gender influences the perception of some of the dental anomalies studied.
Analysis of Geometric Proportions on Maxillary Anterior Teeth for Esthetic Smile Design: An In vivo Study

Abstract:Background and objectives: The maxillary central incisor is the dominant element of anterior dental composition and hence should be restored or replaced with proper proportion of width and length for better aesthetic results. However, the literature is not clear regarding verifiable guidelines for the determination of proportions of the teeth. The aim of this study was to investigate the existence and suitability of Golden Rectangle, Recurring Aesthetic Dental Proportion, and Golden percentage between the widths of maxillary anterior teeth in individuals with natural dentition, with the aid of digital photographs and computer analysis. Material and methods: Frontal full-face digital photographs of the subjects (in smile) were made under standardized conditions using a digital camera and a tripod stand was used to place and orient the camera in the standardized position (camera was positioned 1 meter away from the patient; and the lens of the camera was adjusted at the patients' lip level). Imaging software (Adobe Photoshop CS5; Adobe Systems, Inc, San Jose, Calif.) was used to mark the anatomic landmarks and to digitally analyze the photograph. The entire process of proportion analysis was done by a single observer. Results: The RED proportion was not found to exist between the six maxillary anterior teeth. The values suggested in the golden percentage were not applicable on the subjects of this study. However, a slight modification of these percentages can be adopted taking into consideration the ethnicity differences of the subjects in this study. The values obtained were 24%, 15%, 11% in males and 23%, 15%, and 11% in females. Golden rectangle concept can be used for choosing dimensions of maxillary central incisors which are esthetically pleasing. Conclusion: RED proportion is an unsuitable methods to relate the successive widths of the maxillary anterior teeth. The golden percentage theory seems to be applicable to relate the successive widths of the maxillary anterior teeth if percentages are adjusted taking into consideration the ethnicity of the population. Golden rectangle concept is suitable for choosing dimensions of maxillary central incisors which are esthetically pleasing.
Anterior dental alignment and smile: perception and sensations in a sample of 8- to 10-year-old children and their parents

Abstract:Aim: To describe the perception and sensations that dental alignment and smile determine in a sample of 180 children aged between 8 and 10 years, to assess whether there is a general trend in the classification of smiles, and to understand the influence of background attractiveness and sexual traits on the judgment of smile in the sample of children and 150 parents. Methods: We employed visual media showing a smile in four different arrangements (ideal incisal occlusion [N], median diastema [D], incisal crowding [A], and protruding incisors [P), in both a dynamic and static way, with and without background attractiveness. Results: Trends were found among responses to the four classes of videos and photographs: The boy's smile gained a higher score than the girl's smile. In both the boy and girl presentations, there was an important preference to the following sequence of smiles: N, D, A, and P. Furthermore, the girl photographs showed no relevant difference between A and D. Conclusion: This study showed that there are no different perceptions and sensations due to the variation of dental alignment. There is a general trend in the classification of smiles according to dental alignment. Background attractiveness and sexual traits influenced the judgment of smile.

Abstract:Smile designing primarily involves an enhancement towards appealing and elegant smile through appropriate dental restorations. Todayrsquos modern society gives a lot of precedence to a beautiful and healthy smile making it crucial for dental specialists to devise a comprehensive plan for fulfilling patientrsquos desires. Oral rehabilitation of patients in need of an appealing smile necessitates an integrative approach that involves a modification not only in the soft tissue architecture but also in the form and configuration of teeth. This clinical report describes a successful interdisciplinary approach for the treatment of an aesthetically and functionally compromised anterior dentition of a young female patient. Treatment plan included extraction of teeth with poor prognosis intentional root canal treatment and crown lengthening of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth followed by conventional porcelain-fused-to metal fixed prosthesis. The final treatment outcome not only restored satisfactory function and aesthetics of the patient but also led to an improvement in the quality of life with a positive mind set towards her appearance.nbsp

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Hollywood smile refers to the aesthetic development of dental appearance inspired by the beauty displayed by the movie actors. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the extent of social media effect on the decision making of university students towards selecting Hollywood smile as the choice of their aesthetic treatment.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted by utilizing a self-designed closed-ended questionnaire among under-graduate students from the various public as well as private universities of Riyadh city. The questionnaire was constructed online using Google forms and began with questions related to demographics; questions like Do you notice celebrity's smile on social media? Have you visited a dentist solely after getting inspired by a celebrity's smile? etc., Responses were on a 5-point likert scale ranging from highly dissatisfied or strongly disagree to highly satisfied or strongly agree whenever applicable. Chi-square test was used to compare the differences among the groups with the value of significance kept under 0.05 by using SPSS version 19.RESULTS: The majority of the female participants reported noticing the celebrity's smile on social media. Influence by the celebrity smiles on social media was found more in the older age group participants. However, the term "Hollywood smile" was slightly more known among the younger aged participants.CONCLUSION: The overall effect of social media in decision making of opting for Hollywood smile was found to be moderate. More studies should be conducted to investigate how much social medial is effecting the perceptions of youngsters.
