Abstract:We give a construction of scales (in the descriptive set theoretic sense) directly from mouse existence hypotheses, without using any determinacy arguments. The construction is related to the Martin-Solovay construction for scales on $\Pi^1_2$ sets. The prewellorders of the scales compare reals $x$ and $y$ by comparing features of certain kinds of fully backgrounded $L[E,x]$- and $L[E,y]$-constructions executed in mice $P$ with $x,y \in P$. In this way we produce an inner model theoretic proof of the scale property for many pointclasses, for which the scale property was classically established using determinacy arguments (for example, $\Pi^1_3$). Moreover, it also yields many further pointclasses with the scale property, for example intermediate between $\Pi^1_{2n+1}$ and $\Sigma^1_{2n+2}$, and also instances of complexity well beyond projective.

Abstract:We study the problem of determining whether a given frame is scalable, and when it is, understanding the set of all possible scalings. We show that for most frames this is a relatively simple task in that the frame is either not scalable or is scalable in a unique way, and to find this scaling we just have to solve a linear system. We also provide some insight into the set of all scalings when there is not a unique scaling. In particular, we show that this set is a convex polytope whose vertices correspond to minimal scalings.

Abstract:We introduce a generalization for bounded geometry that we call bounded scale measure. We show that bounded scale measure is a coarse invariant unlike bounded geometry. We then show equivalent definitions for spaces with bounded scale measure and show other properties that spaces with bounded scale measure satisfy. From there, we generalize property A from uniformly discrete metric spaces to large scale spaces with bounded geometry. Lastly, we construct a definition for property A for large scale spaces with bounded scale measure and show that this definition of property A is a coarse invariant.

Abstract:Sufficiency, Conditionality and Invariance are basic principles of statistical inference. Current mathematical statistics courses do not devote much teaching time to these classical principles, and even ignore the latter two, in order to teach modern methods. However, being the philosophical cornerstones of statistical inference, a minimal understanding of these principles should be part of any curriculum in statistics. The scaled uniform model is used here to demonstrate the importance and usefulness of the principles. The main focus is on the conditionality principle that is probably the most basic and less familiar among the three. The appendix discusses the invariance principle and the conditionality principle in the case of sampling from a finite population.

Abstract:The scale invariant Poisson processes on (0,infty) play a central but mildly disguised role in number theory, combinatorics, and genetics. They give the continuous limits which underly and unify diverse discrete structures, including the prime factorization of a uniformly chosen integer, the factorization of polynomials over finite fields, the decomposition into cycles of random permutations, the decomposition into components of random mappings, and the Ewens sampling formula. They deserve attention as one of the fundamental and central objects of probability theory.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the notion of scale pressure and measure theoretic scale pressure for amenable group actions. A variational principle for amenable group actions is presented. We also describe these quantities by pseudo-orbits. Moreover, we prove that if $G$ is a finitely generated countable discrete amenable group, then the scale pressure of $G$ coincides with the scale pressure of $G$ with respect to pseudo-orbits.

Some Improvements on Good Lattice Point Sets

Abstract:Good lattice point (GLP) sets are a type of number-theoretic method widely utilized across various fields. Their space-filling property can be further improved, especially with large numbers of runs and factors. In this paper, Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence is used to measure GLP sets. The generalized good lattice point (GGLP) sets obtained from linear-level permutations of GLP sets have demonstrated that the permutation does not reduce the criterion maximin distance. This paper confirms that linear-level permutation may lead to greater mixture discrepancy. Nevertheless, GGLP sets can still enhance the space-filling property of GLP sets under various criteria. For small-sized cases, the KL divergence from the uniform distribution of GGLP sets is lower than that of the initial GLP sets, and there is nearly no difference for large-sized points, indicating the similarity of their distributions. This paper incorporates a threshold-accepting algorithm in the construction of GGLP sets and adopts Frobenius distance as the space-filling criterion for large-sized cases. The initial GLP sets have been included in many monographs and are widely utilized. The corresponding GGLP sets are partially included in this paper and will be further calculated and posted online in the future. The performance of GGLP sets is evaluated in two applications: computer experiments and representative points, compared to the initial GLP sets. It shows that GGLP sets perform better in many cases.

Abstract:We present a novel approach for data set scaling based on scale-measures from formal concept analysis, i.e., continuous maps between closure systems, for which we derive a canonical representation. Moreover, we prove that scale-measures can be lattice ordered using the canonical representation. This enables exploring the set of scale-measures by the use of meet and join operations. Furthermore we show that the lattice of scale-measures is isomorphic to the lattice of sub-closure systems that arises from the original data. Finally, we provide another representation of scale-measures using propositional logic in terms of data set features. Our theoretical findings are discussed by means of examples.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the duality between large scale and small scale. It is done by creating a connection between C*-algebras and scale structures. In the commutative case we consider C*-subalgebras of $C^b(X)$, the C*-algebra of bounded complex-valued functions on $X$. Namely, each C*-subalgebra $\mathscr{C}$ of $C^b(X)$ induces both a small scale structure on $X$ and a large scale structure on $X$. The small scale structure induced on $X$ corresponds (or is analogous) to the restriction of $C^b(h(X))$ to $X$, where $h(X)$ is the Higson compactification. The large scale structure induced on $X$ is a generalization of the $C_0$-coarse structure of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://N.Wright" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. Conversely, each small scale structure on $X$ induces a C*-subalgebra of $C^b(X)$ and each large scale structure on $X$ induces a C*-subalgebra of $C^b(X)$. To accomplish the full correspondence between scale structures on $X$ and C*-subalgebras of $C^b(X)$ we need to enhance the scale structures to what we call hybrid structures. In the noncommutative case we consider C*-subalgebras of bounded operators $B(l_2(X))$.

Abstract:In this note, we provide with a simple example to show a defect in the definition of the geometric mixing scale, and then introduce an improved scale, called as the strong geometric mixing scale. Abstract:We introduce slicely countably determined points (SCD points) of a bounded and convex subset of a Banach space which extends the notions of denting points, strongly regular points and much more. We completely characterize SCD points in the unit balls of $L_1$-preduals. We study SCD points in direct sums of Banach spaces and obtain that an infinite sum of Banach spaces may have an SCD point despite the fact that none of its components have it. We then prove sufficient conditions to get that an elementary tensor $x\otimes y$ is an SCD point in the unit ball of the projective tensor product $X \widehat{\otimes}_\pi Y$. Regarding Lipschitz-free spaces on compact metric spaces, we show that norm one SCD points of their unit balls are exactly the ones that can be approximated by convex combinations of strongly exposed points of the unit ball. Finally, as applications, we prove a new inheritance result for the Daugavet property to its subspaces, we show that separable Banach spaces for which every convex series of slices intersects the unit sphere must contain an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$, and we get pointwise conditions on an operator on a Banach space with the Daugavet property to satisfy the Daugavet equation.

Abstract:We study relationships between various set theoretic compactness principles, focusing on the interplay between the three families of combinatorial objects or principles mentioned in the title. Specifically, we show the following. (1) Strong forcing axioms, in general incompatible with the existence of indexed squares, can be made compatible with weaker versions of indexed squares. (2) Indexed squares and indecomposable ultrafilters with suitable parameters can coexist. As a consequence, the amount of stationary reflection known to be implied by the existence of a uniform indecomposable ultrafilter is optimal. (3) The Proper Forcing Axiom implies that any cardinal carrying a uniform indecomposable ultrafilter is either measurable or a supremum of countably many measurable cardinals. Leveraging insights from the preceding sections, we demonstrate that the conclusion cannot be improved.

Abstract:Scaled Boolean algebras are a category of mathematical objects that arose from attempts to understand why the conventional rules of probability should hold when probabilities are construed, not as frequencies or proportions or the like, but rather as degrees of belief in uncertain propositions. This paper separates the study of these objects from that not entirely mathematical problem that motivated them. That motivating problem is explicated in the first section, and the application of scaled Boolean algebras to it is explained in the last section. The intermediate sections deal only with the mathematics. It is hoped that this isolation of the mathematics from the motivating problem makes the mathematics clearer.

Abstract:Scalar inferences (SIs) are upper-bounding inferences associated with the use of semantically lower-bounded scalar expressions. One of the current debates regarding these inferences concerns their inferential pattern, specifically whether SIs are uniform or diverse across scales. This study follows the work on scalar diversity yet introduces two changes: First, we reexamine, from a different perspective, two structural properties of scales identified as accounting for SI diversity (boundedness and distance). Second, we analyze our data using both traditional regression analysis and complementary cluster analysis. The regression analysis demonstrates that our reexamination of the structural properties provides a more effective model, which also emphasizes the relationship between boundedness and distance. Specifically, we propose that boundedness fixes distance. The cluster analysis demonstrates two scale types: given-scales, which have an entrenched scalar construal, trigger SIs robustly; and volatile-scales, which have a fluctuant scalar construal, trigger SIs inconsistently. Building on these two scale types, we propose a necessary distinction between the conceptualization of a scale, which is diverse across different scales, and the actual derivation of the SI, which is uniform for all scales, once a scale has been construed. This distinction, we propose, explains how diversity can coexist alongside uniformity.

Abstract:We prove that every real number in [0,1] is the Hausdorff dimension of a Hamel basis of the vector space of reals over the field of rationals. The logic of our proof is of particular interest. The statement of our theorem is classical; it does not involve the theory of computing. However, our proof makes essential use of algorithmic fractal dimension--a computability-theoretic construct--and the point-to-set principle of J. Lutz and N. Lutz (2018).

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 1030-1056, March 2024. Given a metric space [math], a weighted graph [math] over [math] is a metric [math]-spanner of [math] if for every [math], [math], where [math] is the shortest path metric in [math]. In this paper, we construct spanners for finite sets in metric spaces in the online setting. Here, we are given a sequence of points [math], where the points are presented one at a time (i.e., after [math] steps, we see [math]). The algorithm is allowed to add edges to the spanner when a new point arrives; however, it is not allowed to remove any edge from the spanner. The goal is to maintain a [math]-spanner [math] for [math] for all [math], while minimizing the number of edges, and their total weight. We construct online [math]-spanners in the Euclidean [math]-space, [math]-spanners for general metrics, and [math]-spanners for ultrametrics. Most notably, in the Euclidean plane, we construct a [math]-spanner with competitive ratio [math], bypassing the classic lower bound [math] for lightness, which compares the weight of the spanner to that of the minimum spanning tree.

Abstract:A (unit norm) frame is scalable if its vectors can be rescaled so as to result into a tight frame. Tight frames can be considered optimally conditioned because the condition number of their frame operators is unity. In this paper we reformulate the scalability problem as a convex optimization question. In particular, we present examples of various formulations of the problem along with numerical results obtained by using our methods on randomly generated frames.

Abstract:We provide conjectural necessary and (separately) sufficient conditions for the Hilbert scheme of points of a given length to have the maximum dimension tangent space at a point. The sufficient condition is claimed for 3D and reduces the original problem to a problem in convex geometry. Proving either of the two conjectural statements will in particular resolve a long-standing conjecture by Briançon and Iarrobino back in the '70s for the case of the powers of the maximal ideal. Furthermore, for specific classes of lengths, we conjecturally classify points satisfying the conjectural sufficient conditions. This in particular (conjecturally) provides many new explicit families of examples of maximum dimension tangent space at a point of the Hilbert schemes of points of lengths strictly between two consecutive tetrahedral numbers (3+k3) .
