Abstract:Self-powered electronic skin (E-skin) can be endowed with high robustness by employing self-healing materials. However, most self-powered E-skin employs two heterogeneous materials with high modulus mismatch at the interface and poor fully self-healing ability, which reduces the robustness of the whole device. Here, a conductive polyurethane elastomer (PUE) with excellent mechanical toughness and self-healing ability is prepared. Based on the self-healing insulated/conductive PUE homogeneous structure and triboelectric–electrostatic induction effect, a highly robust and self-powered E-skin (HRSE-skin) is developed. The HRSE-skin possesses stable mechanosensation capability during the 50% stretching deformation due to a low modulus mismatch in the homogeneous structure. In addition, the stretchability and mechanosensation capability of the HRSE-skin can be restored after the fracture owing to the fully self-healing ability of the homogeneous structure. Therefore, the HRSE-skin has high robustness of the whole device including stable service behaviors and excellent restorability. The developed HRSE-skin demonstrates high robustness in the detection of the force and bending angle of the prosthetic joint. This work solves the low robustness of self-powered E-skin by the preparation of conductive self-healing PUE and the construction of the homogeneous structure, which is important for the practical applications of self-powered E-skin in prosthetic limbs and advanced robotics. The Supporting Information is available free of charge at <a class="ext-link" href="/doi/10.1021/acsnano.0c04158?goto=supporting-info">https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsnano.0c04158</a>.Synthesis of the insulated and conductive PUE, the calculation equation of healing efficiency, Tables S1 and S2, Figures S1 and S11, reference (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acsnano.0c04158/suppl_file/nn0c04158_si_001.pdf">PDF</a>)Original state of the conductivity for the HRSE-skin (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acsnano.0c04158/suppl_file/nn0c04158_si_002.mp4">MP4</a>)Self-healing state of the conductivity for the HRSE-skin (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acsnano.0c04158/suppl_file/nn0c04158_si_003.mp4">MP4</a>)Original state of the stretchability for the HRSE-skin (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acsnano.0c04158/suppl_file/nn0c04158_si_004.mp4">MP4</a>)Self-healing state of the stretchability for the HRSE-skin (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acsnano.0c04158/suppl_file/nn0c04158_si_005.mp4">MP4</a>)Self-healable mechanosensation capability for the HRSE-skin (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acsnano.0c04158/suppl_file/nn0c04158_si_006.mp4">MP4</a>)Stable mechanosensation capability for the HRSE-skin (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acsnano.0c04158/suppl_file/nn0c04158_si_007.mp4">MP4</a>)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the issue of low robustness faced by self-powered electronic skin (E-skin) in practical applications. Specifically: 1. **Material Mismatch Issue**: Existing self-powered E-skins typically use two different materials, and the modulus mismatch between them leads to reduced overall device robustness. 2. **Insufficient Self-Healing Ability**: The heterogeneous structures in current designs make it difficult for the electrodes, friction layers, and interfaces to fully self-heal, thereby affecting the overall performance of the device. 3. **Sensitivity to Mechanical Damage**: These devices cannot withstand tensile deformation and mechanical damage, further reducing their reliability in practical applications. To address these issues, researchers have developed a new type of high-robustness self-powered electronic skin (HRSE-skin) based on a conductive polyurethane elastomer (PUE) with good mechanical toughness and self-healing ability. By constructing an insulating/conductive PUE homogeneous structure and utilizing the triboelectric induction effect, the device achieves stable sensing capability during tensile deformation and complete self-healing ability after damage, thereby significantly improving the robustness of the entire device. This work is of great significance for the practical application of self-powered E-skin in the fields of prosthetics and advanced robotics.
