Abstract:Lithium-ion cell usage is increasing worldwide due to its high energy density, low self-discharge rate and good life span. The temperature history of the cell impacts the life and safety; hence it is important to understand the impact of cooling design and cooling parameters for optimum cooling system performance. In the present study, a mathematical model for transient heat conduction with internal heat generation is developed in MATLAB. Capability of the present model, for air as coolant is validated with a wide range of available experimental results. Subsequently, the model was used to study the response of discharge rate (1–5C), coolant inlet velocities (1–5 ms -1 ) and coolant inlet temperature (15–35 °C ). To improve the cooling characteristics, the analysis is extended to converging fluid channels, which enhances heat removal capability of coolant. A detailed analysis suggests that operating a cell at 3C discharge rate with a coolant velocity of 3 ms -1 and 25 °C is an ideal trade-off between heat removal and good battery thermal management system. Converging fluid domain along flow direction has been found to provide uniform temperature ( Δ T = T max - T min ) and low T max for optimum cell performance and life. Further, the model is used to analyze the cooling requirement for drive cycle based performance of cell and monthly average temperature variation over a year in a typical Indian city. The proposed methodology can be applied to obtain a safe and cost-effective thermal management system for air-cooled battery pack design.
