Abstract:With advancements in technology, the smaller versions of satellites have gained momentum in the space industry for earth monitoring and communication-based applications. The rise of CanSat technology has significantly impacted the space industry by providing a cost-effective solution for space exploration. CanSat is a simulation model of a real satellite and plays a crucial role in collecting and transmitting atmospheric data. This paper discusses the design of an Onboard Computer System forCanSat, used to study various environmental parameters by monitoring the concentrations of gases in the atmosphere. The Onboard Computer System uses GPS, accelerometer, altitude, temperature, pressure, gyroscope, magnetometer, UV radiation, and air quality sensors for atmospheric sensing. A highly efficient and low-power ESP32 microcontroller and a transceiver module are used to acquire data, facilitate seamless communication and transmit the collected data to the ground station.

Abstract:A CanSat is a miniature satellite system designed to be launched and operate in a manner similar to a satellite but on a much smaller scale. The term "CanSat" is derived from the combination of "Can" (referring to the soda can-sized container often used for the prototype) and "Satellite." These small and cost-effective systems are typically used for educational purposes and scientific experiments. The main objective of this study is to present the design of CanSat, which is intended to track air pollution. The total weight of the CanSat includes the weight of the sensors, communication equipment, and other subsystems, which makes up the CanSat's total weight of 150 grams. The data transmission rate can vary depending on the capabilities of the communication equipment used, but typically ranges between 1-10 transmissions per second. The Xbee communication protocol is commonly used for telemetry, typically at either 2.4 GHz or 900 MHz, but not both simultaneously. The major components of the CanSat are the power and sensor subsystems. The appropriate sensors are chosen by considering the main design elements, and typically include sensors to measure temperature, humidity and gases that can identify various pollutants to collect data on local air quality. CanSat is also equipped with a location retrieval system to ensure it can be recovered after launch. However, the type of system used can vary depending on the specific design. Power conservation techniques are employed to ensure that the CanSat can operate for as long as possible. Component selection is also carefully considered to make the CanSat more portable, affordable, and able to gather data on air pollution effectively.

Abstract:This paper introduces the main problems related to the modeling of the effects of nongravitational perturbations on satellites of the Galileo FOC constellation. The problem is addressed from the point of view of the scientific objectives of the Galileo for Science (G4S_2.0) project. These objectives are reflected in a set of fundamental physics measurements that will exploit the orbits and atomic clocks aboard the Galileo satellites, in particular the GSAT-0201 and GSAT-0202 satellites characterized by elliptical orbits, and not by almost circular orbits such as in the case of the remaining satellites of the constellation. The main focus is on the modeling of the direct solar radiation pressure, the largest nongravitational perturbation on GNSS satellites. After an in-depth presentation of the main nongravitational perturbations of interest, and of the models currently in use in the literature for their consideration, the work focuses on the amplitudes of the different effects and, with particular attention, on their intrinsic knowledge. Finally, two different models are introduced for the structure of the Galileo satellite specially developed for the objectives of G4S_2.0. The first is a simple model of the box-wing type, developed on the basis of the information currently available on the characteristics of the satellite. The second is a 3D model of the Galileo spacecraft, somewhat sophisticated due to the richness of the details on the structure and the various elements that make up the surfaces of the satellite. Abstract:As part of University College Dublin's MSc in Space Science & Technology curriculum, student teams, over the course of a single term, design, build, launch (on a meteorological balloon), operate and recover their own payload on a standardised platform. Each 'TupperSat' must be built from, or contained within, a household plastic storage container, It must weigh less than 1kg, be able to determine location, altitude, internal and external temperature and air pressure, and be able to broadcast this information using an in-house communications system. Students must also design and build a scientific payload or novel technology demonstration to fly on their TupperSat. Notable examples include an earth observation vegetation sensor, particle sample return, gamma-ray detector, and air-bag landing system. The instructors play the role of customer and launch authority. The students are provided with a number of standard components including a Raspberry Pi single-board computer, a 5000 mAH battery, high-altitude-compatible GPS unit, temperature and pressure sensors and, a small low-power radio transceiver module developed specifically for the course based on the LoRa standard. Teams are given a budget of EUR 100 ($115) to purchase additional materials and to build their payload. The students learn space industry practices by full immersion in a typical space project development cycle. TupperSat design and payload concepts are pitched by the student teams at a Preliminary Design Review; plans are well developed before a Critical Design Review, and the team must pass a Flight Readiness Review before being granted permission to launch. Good project management is crucial in order to meet deadlines and secure a launch at the end of the term. As student participation has grown, the module has been modified to allow for more ambitious and challenging projects which further motivates the students.

Abstract:We report the result of a collaboration among Universities, Schools, and Institutions to increase interest in new tools and learning environments. To address this issue, we provide scientific and didactic support to teachers through different kinds of training sessions to introduce innovative didactic methodologies for teaching and learning. The project involved a training course both in streaming and carried-out sessions with university staff as well as secondary school teachers. We selected current research such as climate change, space missions, and Einstein's relativity since they are not commonly included in the Italian physics curriculum; we suggested an approach based on some new methodologies and technologies to introduce these topics. We used microcontroller development boards for measuring environmental parameters, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and data processing applied to Open Data from space missions or weather archives. We also suggested a new approach to teaching modern physics. For this purpose, we used a web-based platform to explore the basic concepts of relativistic physics by emphasizing its impact on Global Positioning Systems, which is of utmost importance in everyday life.

Abstract:High-altitude balloon experiments are becoming very popular among universities and research institutes as they can be used for testing instruments eventually intended for space, and for simple astronomical observations of Solar System objects like the Moon, comets, and asteroids, difficult to observe from the ground due to atmosphere. Further, they are one of the best platforms for atmospheric studies. In this experiment, we build a simple 1U CubeSat and, by flying it on a high-altitude balloon to an altitude of about 30 km, where the total payload weighted 4.9 kg and examine how some parameters, such as magnetic field, humidity, temperature or pressure, vary as a function of altitude. We also calibrate the magnetometer to remove the hard iron and soft iron errors. Such experiments and studies through a stratospheric balloon flights can also be used to study the performance of easily available commercial sensors in extreme conditions as well. We present the results of the first flight, which helped us study the functionality of the various sensors and electronics at low temperatures reaching about -40 degrees Celsius. Further the motion of the payload has been tracked throughout this flight. This experiment took place on 8 March 2020 from the CREST campus of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore. Using the results from this flight, we identify and rectify the errors to obtain better results from the subsequent flights.

We describe experiments that previously required expensive apparatus or were not feasible in teaching laboratories. Finally, we discuss some perspectives about the use of sensors in the physics teaching.

Abstract:In the years 2015-2018, the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and the Italian Ministry of Defense proposed the joint initiative "Space for Your Future. The ISS: Innovatio, Scientia, Sapientia" in partnership with the Italian Space Agency. It was a competition addressed to secondary school students and aimed at developing innovative experiments to be conducted on the International Space Station, whose acronym (ISS) is the same of the Latin words "Innovatio, Scientia, Sapientia". Regardless of the odds of winning, "Space for Your Future" became a successful STEM educational project implemented in numerous schools. We illustrate how that Astronomy contest fostered a valid constructivist learning, a fruitful participatory science, and vast scientific research. We discuss, in particular, the activities of two teams of pupils from the Scientific High School "Giovanni Battista Grassi" in Latina (seat of the Planetarium "Livio Gratton") who participated within the thematic area No. 3 "Test the Sciences in Space". They all worked on chemical tests, suitable for the ISS microgravity, under the tutoring of Francesco Giuliano (Province Manager of the IYA 2009 and the IYC 2011 in Latina). The key reference is a talk given in the 104th annual congress of the Italian Physical Society at the University of Calabria (September 17-21, 2018) together with an invited lecture held in the 13th European Researchers' Night by Frascati Scienza (September 28, 2018).

Design of CANSAT for Air Quality Monitoring for an altitude of 900 meters

Abstract:This paper presents the design and development of NAMBI-VJ, a CANSAT specifically designed for air quality monitoring and stabilization. The CANSAT's cylindrical structure, measuring 310mm in height and 125mm in diameter, is equipped with a mechanical gyroscope for stabilization and a spill-hole parachute for controlled descent. The primary objective of this research is to create a compact, lightweight satellite capable of monitoring air quality parameters such as particulate matter (PM), carbon dioxide (CO2), longitude, and latitude. To achieve this, the CANSAT utilizes Zigbee communication to transmit data to a ground station. Experimental testing involved dropping the CANSAT from an altitude of 900 meters using a drone. The results demonstrate the CANSAT's ability to successfully gather and transmit air quality data, highlighting its potential for environmental monitoring applications.

Abstract:Recent improvements in data collection volume from planetary and space physics missions have allowed the application of novel data science techniques. The Cassini mission for example collected over 600 gigabytes of scientific data from 2004 to 2017. This represents a surge of data on the Saturn system. In comparison, the previous mission to Saturn, Voyager over 20 years earlier, had onboard a ~70 kB 8-track storage ability. Machine learning can help scientists work with data on this larger scale. Unlike many applications of machine learning, a primary use in planetary space physics applications is to infer behavior about the system itself. This raises three concerns: first, the performance of the machine learning model, second, the need for interpretable applications to answer scientific questions, and third, how characteristics of spacecraft data change these applications. In comparison to these concerns, uses of "black box" or un-interpretable machine learning methods tend toward evaluations of performance only either ignoring the underlying physical process or, less often, providing misleading explanations for it. The present work uses Cassini data as a case study as these data are similar to space physics and planetary missions at Earth and other solar system objects. We build off a previous effort applying a semi-supervised physics-based classification of plasma instabilities in Saturn's magnetic environment, or magnetosphere. We then use this previous effort in comparison to other machine learning classifiers with varying data size access, and physical information access. We show that incorporating knowledge of these orbiting spacecraft data characteristics improves the performance and interpretability of machine leaning methods, which is essential for deriving scientific meaning. Building on these findings, we present a framework on incorporating physics knowledge into machine learning problems targeting semi-supervised classification for space physics data in planetary environments. These findings present a path forward for incorporating physical knowledge into space physics and planetary mission data analyses for scientific discovery.

Abstract:The CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP) project aims to develop a constellation of two CubeSats orbiting the Earth to measure the linear polarization of solar flares in the hard X-ray band by means of a Compton scattering polarimeter on board of each satellite. CUSP will allow to study the magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration in the flaring magnetic structures. CUSP is a project approved for a Phase B study by the Italian Space Agency in the framework of the Alcor program aimed to develop CubeSat technologies and missions. In this paper we describe the a method for a multi-physical simulation analysis while analyzing some possible design optimization of the payload design solutions adopted. In particular, we report the mechanical design for each structural component, the results of static and dynamic finite element analysis, the preliminary thermo-mechanical analysis for two specific thermal cases (hot and cold orbit) and a topological optimization of the interface between the platform and the payload.

An Investigation into Active Control for Accessible Orbital Flight

Abstract:Recently, a practical and publicly accessible satellite standard called the SmallSat has amplified public involvement in orbital research. This allows for flexible and efficient deployments of impactful low-earth-orbit experiments that would otherwise never be flown. However, the launch industry responsible for flying these experiments is not flexible nor efficient. This project aims to make orbital technologies accessible at the miniature scale, specifically thrust-vector-control, through an iterative engineering process simplifying and miniaturizing technologies from launch vehicles such as the Space Shuttle and Falcon 9. An Arduino-based custom flight computer was developed alongside state machine control software and active-control hardware, all designed to scale. Together, these three major components emulate the methods used in the aerospace industry. Initial test flights and recent ground test data have indicated stable control with a maximum of 7° and 2.62° of deviation from the intended flight path respectively, an acceptable stability range when compared to similar finned flights. Results show that scalable thrust vectoring is possible at a small scale, giving adaptability and control applicable to both small and large test vehicles. With accessible orbital flight, countless experiments can be completed concurrently, allowing for faster amateur rocket development and opening another path to space.

Abstract:Most problems in Earth sciences aim to do inferences about the system, where accurate predictions are just a tiny part of the whole problem. Inferences mean understanding variables relations, deriving models that are physically interpretable, that are simple parsimonious, and mathematically tractable. Machine learning models alone are excellent approximators, but very often do not respect the most elementary laws of physics, like mass or energy conservation, so consistency and confidence are compromised. In this paper, we describe the main challenges ahead in the field, and introduce several ways to live in the Physics and machine learning interplay: to encode differential equations from data, constrain data-driven models with physics-priors and dependence constraints, improve parameterizations, emulate physical models, and blend data-driven and process-based models. This is a collective long-term AI agenda towards developing and applying algorithms capable of discovering knowledge in the Earth system.

Abstract:A SmallSat mission concept is formulated here to carry out Time-varying Optical Measurements of Clouds and Aerosol Transport (TOMCAT) from space while embracing low-cost opportunities enabled by the revolution in Earth science observation technologies. TOMCAT's "around-the-clock" measurements will provide needed insights and strong synergy with existing earth observation satellites to (1) statistically resolve diurnal and vertical variation of cirrus cloud properties (key to the Earth's radiation budget), (2) determine the impacts of regional and seasonal planetary boundary layer (PBL) diurnal variation on surface air quality and low-level cloud distributions, and (3) characterize smoke and dust emission processes impacting their long-range transport on the sub-seasonal to seasonal time scales. Clouds, aerosol particles, and the PBL play critical roles in the Earth's climate system at multiple spatiotemporal scales. Yet, their vertical variations as a function of local time are poorly measured from space. Active sensors for profiling the atmosphere typically utilize sun-synchronous low earth orbits (LEO) with rather limited temporal and spatial coverage, inhibiting the characterization of spatiotemporal variability. Pairing compact active lidar and passive multi-angle remote sensing technologies from an inclined LEO platform enables measurements of the diurnal and vertical variability of aerosols, clouds, and aerosol mixing layer (or PBL) height in tropical-to-midlatitude regions where most of the world's population resides. TOMCAT is conceived to bring potential societal benefits by delivering its data products in near real time and offering on-demand hazard-monitoring capabilities to profile fire injection of smoke particles, the frontal lofting of dust particles, and the eruptive rise of volcanic plumes.

Abstract:In this paper, the study on weather forecasting by using nano space craft is presented. In the past two decades, a silent revolution has taken place in the space domain, leading to what today is known as “New Space.” We have passed from a selected group of countries, space agencies, and big industries building, launching, and operating satellites and other spacecrafts, of a scenario in which many universities and research institutes can do it. The key of this was the definition of the “CubeSat” standard, back to 1999. In 2013, it all took off on the commercial Earth Observation sector with the first launches from two companies that are now running 100+ CubeSat constellations for optical imaging or weather prediction, with very low revisit times. Today, the same revolution is taking place in the fields of Telecommunications, and Astronomical Scientific missions. In this chapter, the evolution of the space sector is briefly revised until the arrival of the CubeSats. Then, the CubeSat intrinsic limitations are discussed as they are key to understand the development and current situation of the CubeSat sector. NASA and ESA strategies are also presented. The chapter concludes with a summary of the technology roadmap to enable the next generation of CubeSat-based missions, including satellite constellations or federations, formation flying, synthetic apertures... The work done & presented in this paper is the result of the mini-project work that has been done by the first sem engineering students of the college and as such there is little novelty in it and the references are being taken from various sources from the internet, the paper is being written by the students to test their writing skills in the starting of their engineering career and also to test the presentation skills during their mini-project presentation. The work done & presented in this paper is the report of the assignment / alternate assessment tool as a part and parcel of the academic assignment of the first year subject on nanotechnology & IoT.

Abstract:Abstract Since 2017 the Italian Space Agency (ASI) participates to so-called ‘Alternanza Scuola-Lavoro’ (i.e. ‘school-work synergy’) outreach projects promoted by the Italian government, and the ASI Space Science Data Center (SSDC) actively contributes to them, with the primary aim of bringing students closer to space-related activities before choosing their university studies. The SSDC outreach programme is split into two parts: one theoretical, in which relevant topic are presented and explained, and one practical, consisting of hands-on activities aimed to replicate scientific analysis of real space data. The impact of the programme on students’ attitude is then evaluated by means of questionnaires specifically designed to gather information on the students’ educational background, the level of engagement triggered by the proposed activities, their relevance to school-based activities, and the perceived ease of understanding of the covered topics. As reported in this paper, the analysis of the answers clearly shows that students greatly appreciated this outreach project, supporting its possible expansion and development, even articulated in a more complex pedagogical plan, as already done for one school in a pilot case. Therefore, we plan to expand these activities in the next future both by including new topics (e.g. cosmology, stellar physics), and by proposing new more articulated teaching pathways inclusive of on-site activities in the classroom.

Abstract:In order to improve the design level of spacecraft and meet the requirements of spacecraft development, it is urgent to research the calibration technology of spacecraft attitude and orbit control system (AOCS). A calibration method for satellite earth sensor simulator is proposed, and a calibration device is developed. Based on the operating mechanism and mathematical model of the satellite earth sensor simulator, with FPGA and microcontroller as the control core, the single-board computer receives and sends dynamic parameter commands through the CAN bus, completes the setting by solving the edge of the chord width signal Calibration of pitch angle and roll angle. The calibration device has a high degree of integration and fast calculation efficiency, and realizes online automatic calibration of the satellite dynamics algorithm and the hardware simulator during the whole work process. Contribute to the measurement of the information domain of the attitude orbit control system.
Advanced harmonization and sensor fusion to transform data readiness and resolution for big data analytics

Abstract:Access to data is no longer a problem. The recent emergence of new observational paradigms combined with advances in conventional spaceborne sensing has resulted in a proliferation of satellite sensor data. This geospatial information revolution constitutes a game changer in the ability to derive time-critical and location-specific insights into dynamic land surface processes.&#160;However, it&#8217;s not easy to integrate all of the data that is available. Sensor interoperability issues and cross-calibration challenges present obstacles in realizing the full potential of these rich geospatial datasets.The production of analysis ready, sensor-agnostic, and very high spatiotemporal resolution information feeds has an obvious role in advancing geospatial data analytics and machine learning applications at broad scales with potentially far reaching societal and economic benefits.&#160;At Planet, our mission is to make the world visible, accessible, and actionable. We are pioneering a methodology--the CubeSat-Enabled Spatio-Temporal Enhancement Method (CESTEM)--to enhance, harmonize, inter-calibrate, and fuse cross-sensor data streams leveraging rigorously calibrated &#8216;gold standard&#8217; satellites (i.e., Sentinel, Landsat, MODIS) in synergy with superior resolution CubeSats from Planet. The result is next generation analysis ready data, delivering clean (i.e. free from clouds and shadows), gap-filled (i.e., daily, 3 m), temporally consistent, radiometrically robust, and sensor agnostic surface reflectance feeds featuring and synergizing inputs from both public and private sensor sources. The enhanced data readiness, interoperability, and resolution offer unique opportunities for advancing big data analytics and positioning remote sensing as a trustworthy source for delivering usable and actionable insights.

Abstract:3Cat-4 is the fourth member of the CubeSat series of UPC's NanoSat Lab, and it was selected by the ESA Academy's Fly Your Satellite! program in 2017. This mission aims at demonstrating the capabilities of nano-satellites, and in particular those based in the 1-Unit CubeSat standard, for challenging Earth Observation (EO) using Global Navigation Satellite System - Reflectometry (GNSS-R) and L - band microwave radiometry, as well as for Automatic Identification Systems (AIS). The following study presents the results of the thermal analysis carried out for this mission, evaluating different scenarios, including the most critical cases at both high and low temperatures. The results consider different albedos and orbital parameters in order to establish the optimal temperatures to achieve the best mission performance within the nominal temperatures, and in all operational modes of the satellite. Simulation results are included considering the thermal performance of other materials, such as Kapton, as well as the redesign of the optical properties of the satellite's solar panels. The correlation with the thermal model and the TVAC test campaign was conducted at the ESA ESEC-GALAXIA facilities in Belgium.

Abstract:CALIPSO's main mission objective is studying the climate impact of clouds and aerosols in the atmosphere. CALIPSO also collects information about other components of the Earth's ecosystem, such as oceans and land. This paper introduces the physics concepts and presents preliminary results for the valueadded CALIPSO Earth system science products. These include ocean surface wind speeds, column atmospheric optical depths, ocean subsurface backscatter, land surface elevations, atmospheric temperature profiles, and A-train data fusion products.
