Abstract:In the present work, the structure of several fire plumes from massive fires subjected to moderate crosswinds is numerically investigated by means of large eddy simulations. The fire plume evolution was evaluated by the mean CO2 concentration for a range of fireline intensities and inclinations. There is a notorious rise in the fire plume's vertical extent and inclination upon increasing fireline intensity, whereas a notable asymmetry emerges upon increasing fireline inclination. The well-known coherent flow structures emerging from jets in crossflow were identified, such as the shear-layer vortices, the counter-rotating vortex pair, and the wake vortices. Additionally, fire plumes with high intensities (which require a large entrainment) were found to generate strong vertical structures that resemble dust devils, when vertical vorticity is present in the flow — generated, for example, by a wind gust. For a 40MW/m fireline subjected to a wind gust of 5m/s , these vertical structures move in the wind direction at 1.7m/s with an average increase (decrease) of the maximum vorticity upon increasing height (time). The appearance of these vertical structures is enhanced by the fireline inclination.
