Abstract:Lanthanum oxide (La2O3) has shown excellent catalytic performance in many catalytic hydrogenation reactions. The intrinsic activity of La2O3 toward H2 adsorption and activation in these reactions remains unclear. In the present work, we fundamentally investigated hydrogen interaction with La2O3 modified with Ni nanoparticles. Hydrogen temperature programmed desorption (TPD) results show enhanced hydrogen adsorption on Ni/La2O3 witha new hydrogen desorption peak at higher temperature compared to that on Ni surfaces. With serials of control experiments, it has been found the enhanced H2 adsorption on Ni/La2O3 is due to the oxygen vacancies formed at the metal-oxide interfaces. Hydrogen atoms spilled over from Ni surfaces to the oxygen vacancies form lanthanum oxyhydride species (H-La-O) at the metal-oxide interfaces. The hydrogen adsorbed at the metal-oxide interfaces of Ni/La2O3 shows improved catalytic activity in CO2 hydrogenation reaction. Furthermore, the enhanced hydrogen adsorption due to the oxygen vacancies formed at metal-oxide interfaces is a generic phenomenon, which was further demonstrated in M/La2O3 (M= Fe, Co, Ni). With the modification of the supported transition metal nanoparticles, oxyhydride species can be formed on the surface of La2O3, similar to the recent discovery of oxyhydride species on CeO2 surfaces with oxygen vacancies. These findings here improve our understanding of the surface chemistry and catalytic reactions on La2O3 surfaces and shed a new light in the design of more efficient La2O3-based catalysts with metal-oxide interfaces.
