Abstract:There are (at least) three bijections from Dyck paths to 321-avoiding permutations in the literature, due to Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, Krattenthaler, and Mansour-Deng-Du. How different are they? Denoting them B,K,M respectively, we show that M = B \circ L = K \circ L' where L is the classical Kreweras-Lalanne involution on Dyck paths and L', also an involution, is a sort of derivative of L. Thus K^{-1} \circ B, a measure of the difference between B and K, is the product of involutions L' \circ L and turns out to be a very curious bijection: as a permutation on Dyck n-paths it is an nth root of the "reverse path" involution. The proof of this fact boils down to a geometric argument involving pairs of nonintersecting lattice paths.

Abstract:We give bijective results between several variants of lattice paths of length $2n$ (or $2n-2$) and integer compositions of n, all enumerated by the seemingly innocuous formula $4^{n-1}$. These associations lead us to make new connections between these objects, such as congruence results.

Abstract:Involution words are variations of reduced words for involutions in Coxeter groups, first studied under the name of "admissible sequences" by Richardson and Springer. They are maximal chains in Richardson and Springer's weak order on involutions. This article is the first in a series of papers on involution words, and focuses on their enumerative properties. We define involution analogues of several objects associated to permutations, including Rothe diagrams, the essential set, Schubert polynomials, and Stanley symmetric functions. These definitions have geometric interpretations for certain intervals in the weak order on involutions. In particular, our definition of "involution Schubert polynomials" can be viewed as a Billey-Jockusch-Stanley type formula for cohomology class representatives of $\mathrm{O}_n$- and $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$-orbit closures in the flag variety, defined inductively in recent work of Wyser and Yong. As a special case of a more general theorem, we show that the involution Stanley symmetric function for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is a product of staircase-shaped Schur functions. This implies that the number of involution words for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is equal to the dimension of a certain irreducible representation of a Weyl group of type $B$.

Abstract:We prove new bijections between different variants of Dyck paths and integer compositions, which give combinatorial explanations of their simple counting formula $4^{n-1}$. These give relations between different statistics, such as the number of crossings of the $x$-axis in classes of Dyck bridges or the distribution of peaks in classes of Dyck paths, and furthermore relate them with $k$- and $g$-compositions. These allow us to find and prove congruence results for Dyck paths and parity results for compositions. Our investigation uncovers unexpected connections to mock theta functions, Hardinian arrays, little Schr\"oder paths, Fibonacci numbers, and irreducible pairs of compositions, offering new insights into the structures of paths, partitions and compositions.

Restricting Dyck Paths and 312-avoiding Permutations

Abstract:Dyck paths having height at most $h$ and without valleys at height $h-1$ are combinatorially interpreted by means of 312-avoding permutations with some restrictions on their \emph{left-to-right maxima}. The results are obtained by analyzing a restriction of a well-known bijection between the sets of Dyck paths and 312-avoding permutations. We also provide a recursive formula enumerating these two structures using ECO method and the theory of production matrices. As a further result we obtain a family of combinatorial identities involving Catalan numbers.

Abstract:A \emph{Dyck path} is a lattice path in the first quadrant of the $xy$-plane that starts at the origin, ends on the $x$-axis, and consists of the same number of North-East steps $U$ and South-East steps $D$. A \emph{valley} is a subpath of the form $DU$. A Dyck path is called \emph{restricted $d$-Dyck} if the difference between any two consecutive valleys is at least $d$ (right-hand side minus left-hand side) or if it has at most one valley. In this paper we give some connections between restricted $d$-Dyck paths and both, the non-crossing partitions of $[n]$ and some subfamilies of polyominoes. We also give generating functions to count several aspects of these combinatorial objects.

Abstract:We present a substantial generalization of the equinumeracy of grand Dyck paths and Dyck-path prefixes, constrained within a band. The number of constrained paths starting at level $i$ and ending in a window of size $2j+2$ is equal to the number starting at level $j$ and ending in a window of size $2i+2$ centered around the same point. A new encoding of lattice paths provides a bijective proof.

Abstract:In \cite{BaDeFePi96} the concept of nondecreasing Dyck paths was introduced. We continue this research by looking at it from the point of view of words, rational languages, planted plane trees, and continued fractions. We construct a bijection with planted plane trees of height $\le 4$ and compute various statistics on trees that are the equivalents of nondecreasing Dyck paths.

Abstract:The orbits of the orthogonal and symplectic groups on the flag variety are in bijection, respectively, with the involutions and fixed-point-free involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$. Wyser and Yong have described polynomial representatives for the cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits, which we denote as $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (to be called involution Schubert polynomials) and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ (to be called fixed-point-free involution Schubert polynomials). Our main results are explicit formulas decomposing the product of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (respectively, $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$) with any $y$-invariant linear polynomial as a linear combination of other involution Schubert polynomials. These identities serve as analogues of Lascoux and Schützenberger's transition formula for Schubert polynomials, and lead to a self-contained algebraic proof of the nontrivial equivalence of several definitions of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ appearing in the literature. Our formulas also imply combinatorial identities about involution words, certain variations of reduced words for involutions in $S_n$. We construct operators on involution words based on the Little map to prove these identities bijectively. The proofs of our main theorems depend on some new technical results, extending work of Incitti, about covering relations in the Bruhat order of $S_n$ restricted to involutions.

Inverting the General Order Sweep Map

Abstract:Building upon the foundational work of Thomas and Williams on the modular sweep map, Garsia and Xin have developed a straightforward algorithm for the inversion of the sweep map on rational $(m,n)$-Dyck paths, where $(m,n)$ represents coprime pairs of integers. Our research reveals that their innovative approach readily generalizes to encompass a broader spectrum of Dyck paths. To this end, we introduce a family of Order sweep maps applicable to general Dyck paths, which are differentiated by their respective sweep orders at level $0$. We demonstrate that each of these Order sweep maps constitutes a bijective transformation. Our findings encapsulate the sweep maps for both general Dyck paths and their incomplete counterparts as specific instances within this more extensive framework.

A new `dinv' arising from the two part case of the Shuffle Conjecture

Abstract:In a recent paper J. Haglund showed that a certain symmetric function expresion enumerates by t^{area} q^{dinv} of the parking functions whose diagonal word is in the shuffle of 12...j and j+1...j+n with k of the cars j+1,...,j+n in the main diagonal including car j+n in the cell (1,1). In view of some recent conjectures of Haglund-Morse-Zabrocki it is natural to conjecture that replacing E_{n,k} by the modified Hall-Littlewood functions would yield a polynomial that enumerates the same collection of parking functions but now restricted by the requirement that the Dyck path supporting cars j+1,...,j+n hits the diagonal according to the composition p=(p_1,p_2,...,p_k). We prove here this conjecture by deriving a recursion for the symmetric function expression then using this recursion to construct a new dinv statistic we will denote ndinv and show that this polynomial enumerates the latter parking functions by t^{area} q^{ndinv}.

Degenerate crossing number and signed reversal distance

Abstract:The degenerate crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of transverse crossings among all its drawings, where edges are represented as simple arcs and multiple edges passing through the same point are counted as a single crossing. Interpreting each crossing as a cross-cap induces an embedding into a non-orientable surface. In 2007, Mohar showed that the degenerate crossing number of a graph is at most its non-orientable genus and he conjectured that these quantities are equal for every graph. He also made the stronger conjecture that this also holds for any loopless pseudotriangulation with a fixed embedding scheme. In this paper, we prove a structure theorem that almost completely classifies the loopless 2-vertex embedding schemes for which the degenerate crossing number equals the non-orientable genus. In particular, we provide a counterexample to Mohar's stronger conjecture, but show that in the vast majority of the 2-vertex cases, the conjecture does hold. The reversal distance between two signed permutations is the minimum number of reversals that transform one permutation to the other one. If we represent the trajectory of each element of a signed permutation under successive reversals by a simple arc, we obtain a drawing of a 2-vertex embedding scheme with degenerate crossings. Our main result is proved by leveraging this connection and a classical result in genome rearrangement (the Hannenhali-Pevzner algorithm) and can also be understood as an extension of this algorithm when the reversals do not necessarily happen in a monotone order.

Abstract:The problem of counting plane trees with $n$ edges and an even or an odd number of leaves was studied by Eu, Liu and Yeh, in connection with an identity on coloring nets due to Stanley. This identity was also obtained by Bonin, Shapiro and Simion in their study of Schröder paths, and it was recently derived by Coker using the Lagrange inversion formula. An equivalent problem for partitions was independently studied by Klazar. We present three parity reversing involutions, one for unlabelled plane trees, the other for labelled plane trees and one for 2-Motzkin paths which are in one-to-one correspondence with Dyck paths.

Abstract:For an oriented graph $D$, the $inversion$ of $X \subseteq V(D)$ in $D$ is the digraph obtained from $D$ by reversing the direction of all arcs with both ends in $X$. The inversion number of $D$, denoted by $inv(D)$, is the minimum number of inversions needed to transform $D$ into an acyclic digraph. In this paper, we first show that $inv (\overrightarrow{C_3} \Rightarrow D)= inv(D) +1$ for any oriented graph $\textit{D}$ with even inversion number $inv(D)$, where the dijoin $\overrightarrow{C_3} \Rightarrow D$ is the oriented graph obtained from the disjoint union of $\overrightarrow{C_3}$ and $D$ by adding all arcs from $\overrightarrow{C_3}$ to $D$. Inversion of the Abel--Prym map in presence of an additional involution

Abstract:Unlike Abel map of the symmetric power of a Riemann surface onto its Jacobian, the Abel--Prym map generically can not be reversed by means of conventional technique related to the Jacobi inversion problem, and of its main ingredient, namely the Riemann vanishing theorem. It happens because the corresponding analog of the Riemann vanishing theorem gives twice as many points as the dimension of the Prym variety. However, if the Riemann surface has a second involution commuting with the one defining the Prym variety and satisfying a certain additional condition, an analog of the Jacobi inversion can be defined, and expressed in terms of the Prym theta function. We formulate these conditions and refer to the pairs of involutions satisfying them as to pairs of the first type. We formulate necessary conditions for the pair of involutions to be a pair of the first type, and give a series of examples of curves with such pairs of involutions, mainly spectral curves of Hitchin systems, and also a spectral curve of the Kovalewski system.
