Abstract:Cruise ships are among the most complex and demanding products of the shipbuilding industry. The very special "payload" and exclusive operational profile, i.e. passengers looking for leisure and entertainment, imply outstanding performances in terms of safety standards and customer satisfaction. Attention to environment is relevant as well, since these ships are used to operate in spectacular marine ecosystems. The need of European shipyards to continuously progress to preserve the market leadership requires a virtuous evolution of the ship design process projected on a life cycle perspective. In this regard Systems Engineering appears to be a robust and reliable paradigm, able to provide the necessary comprehensive view of the cruise ship system as a whole together with a systematic methodological framework that, among the other advantages, enables the active and constructive participation of all the involved stakeholders in the decision-making process. In particular, Systems Engineering strongly relies on the so-called model-based engineering to share, integrate, combine and improve the level of details relevant to the system under development. In this paper the digital twin model will be discussed as a natural evolution of above-mentioned model-based engineering and its utilization in the shipbuilding field will be described as a very promising application especially in the field of cruise ships.

Abstract:Maximum digitalization is the current trend in industrial development. The digital industrial revolution has been underway for more than a dozen years. Industry 4.0 and the idea of digital twins (DT) are becoming the focus of virtually all industrial sectors. Some sectors are more predisposed to digitalization, while for others, the process is much more difficult. This mainly depends on the specific characteristics and susceptibility of a given industry, including the current degree of digitalization of companies, as well as the knowledge and mental readiness of employees. The individual characteristics of an industry are important. Shipbuilding is a traditional industry where the level of digitalization is still low. As a result, the efficiency of shipbuilding processes and the quality of ships built are not sufficiently controlled. The article addresses this problem, reviews work in the field of digitalization of shipbuilding processes, and identifies the needs and challenges in this area. The article proposes the concept of a DT system for the entire ship design and production process. Key areas of digitalization of the actual processes were defined, and a division was made into planning, monitoring, and process analysis activities. Special attention was paid to the area of dimensional quality control, and the dimensional quality management metasystem (DQMM) was introduced into the comprehensive DT system. The requirements were defined, and the limitations of the proposed solution were identified, taking into account a number of external factors, including the degree of readiness of the manufacturer—the shipyard. The developed DT system concept was tested using the example of the construction process of a simplified ship. Practical aspects of the implementation of the proposed solution, in particular, DQMM, were pointed out.

Abstract:The shipbuilding industry plays a pivotal role in national strategic security and economic development, and one critical challenge is the pipeline layout design problem. It predominantly relies on designers’ subjective experience, and it is marked by a lack of efficient knowledge sharing and the absence of smart pipe routing algorithms. This paper proposes an agile design system, which integrates ship pipeline design knowledge management, semi-automatic design that involves frequent interaction with human designers, and automatic rule checking. The framework is refined by digital twin concepts, facilitating close collaboration between physical and digital systems. The paradigm shift holds the potential to substantially enhance the efficiency of ship pipeline layout design, while concurrently reducing the reliance on manual labor.

Abstract:Modern ships are highly complex technological systems and have a long and resource-intensive development cycle. Moreover, the final design must comply with many specific technical and regulatory requirements while constraining the capital and operational expenditures. Decisions made during the early stages of design have a large impact on ship functionality and determine the overall configuration of the ship; the advanced computational resources available today can be used to change the traditional approach to ship design, significantly improving the data available for these early-stage decisions. Moreover, the new methodologies can improve the ability to assess the impact of innovative technologies such as those inherent in the complete electrification of ships, and can simultaneously allow visualization of a three-dimensional (3D) virtual prototype of the designs. In this article, a methodological approach is presented that exemplifies these advantages.

Abstract:Energy efficiency is an important factor in the marine industry to help reduce manufacturing and operational costs as well as the impact on the environment. In the face of global competition and cost-effectiveness, ship builders and operators today require a major overhaul in the entire ship design, manufacturing and operation process to achieve these goals. This paper highlights smart design, manufacturing and operation as the way forward in an industry 4.0 (i4) era from designing for better energy efficiency to more intelligent ships and smart operation through-life. The paper (i) draws parallels between ship design, manufacturing and operation processes, (ii) identifies key challenges facing such a temporal (lifecycle) as opposed to spatial (mass) products, (iii) proposes a closed-loop ship lifecycle framework and (iv) outlines potential future directions in smart design, manufacturing and operation of ships in an industry 4.0 value chain so as to achieve more energy-efficient vessels. Through computational intelligence and cyber-physical integration, we envision that industry 4.0 can revolutionise ship design, manufacturing and operations in a smart product through-life process in the near future.

Abstract:Shipping is responsible for approximately the 90% of world trade leading to significant impacts on the environment. As a consequence, a crucial issue for the maritime industry is to develop technologies able to increase the ship efficiency, by reducing fuel consumption and unnecessary maintenance operations. For example, the marine fouling phenomenon has a deep impact, since to prevent or reduce its growth which affects the ship consumption, costly drydockings for cleaning the hull and the propeller are needed and must be scheduled based on a speed loss estimation. In this work a data driven Digital Twin of the ship is built, leveraging on the large amount of information collected from the on-board sensors, and is used for estimating the speed loss due to marine fouling. A thorough comparison between the proposed method and ISO 19030, which is the de-facto standard for dealing with this task, is carried out on real-world data coming from two Handymax chemical/product tankers. Results clearly show the effectiveness of the proposal and its better speedloss prediction accuracy with respect to the ISO 19030, thus allowing reducing the fuel consumption due to fouling.

Abstract:With the development of IoT technology, the digital twin has been applied in many fields. It is the key to realizing the integration of physical information space and an effective means for intelligent upgrading of products, providing a novel idea for the whole life cycle management of complex products. As a pillar industry at the national strategic level, the shipbuilding industry is in the stage of informatization transformation and upgrading and needs to improve its own competitiveness. The ship whole life cycle includes design, construction, operation, and maintenance, as well as scrapping and recycling, but each stage has a certain independence, which makes it prone to the problem of information islands. However, the current research on the product full lifecycle digital twin has not yet considered the impact of historical data of successive generation products on each stage of the current product lifecycle. To address the above issues, this paper firstly proposes the vertical–horizontal design idea from the perspective of the product whole life cycle and combining historical experience (vertical) with real-time data (horizontal) to realize the construction and evolution of digital twin models at all stages of the life cycle. Then, on the basis of the vertical–horizontal design idea, a framework for the ship whole life cycle digital twin is proposed. Finally, the operation mechanism of the framework is elaborated from the four stages of the ship life cycle, with a view to providing a reference for the transformation and upgrading of the future ship industry.

Abstract:This book deals with modern Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software tools and platforms implemented in ship design, the integration of techno-economic databases, the use of optimisation and simulation software tools, which are integrated in these platforms, and the virtual modelling of ships and their operation by using a Virtual Vessel Framework (VVF). It contains a series of application case studies related to the developed holistic approach to ship design and operation. Nine case studies are described, referring to the design and operation of various ship types, namely RoPax, cruise ship, double-ended ferry, bulk carrier, containership, offshore support vessel, ocean surveillance ship and research vessel and one offshore structure. All case studies are driven by leading representatives of the European Maritime Industry. This book complements A Holistic Approach to Ship Design, volume 1, which covers methods and tools for the life cycle optimisation and assessment of ship design and operation.

Abstract:As a result of the progressive implantation of the Industry 4.0 paradigm, many industries are experimenting a revolution that shipyards cannot ignore. Therefore, the application of the principles of Industry 4.0 to shipyards are leading to the creation of Shipyards 4.0. Due to this, Navantia, one of the 10 largest shipbuilders in the world, is updating its whole inner workings to keep up with the near-future challenges that a Shipyard 4.0 will have to face. Such challenges can be divided into three groups: the vertical integration of production systems, the horizontal integration of a new generation of value creation networks, and the re-engineering of the entire production chain, making changes that affect the entire life cycle of each piece of a ship. Pipes, which exist in a huge number and varied typology on a ship, are one of the key pieces, and its monitoring constitutes a prospective cyber-physical system. Their improved identification, traceability, and indoor location, from production and through their life, can enhance shipyard productivity and safety. In order to perform such tasks, this article first conducts a thorough analysis of the shipyard environment. From this analysis, the essential hardware and software technical requirements are determined. Next, the concept of smart pipe is presented and defined as an object able to transmit signals periodically that allows for providing enhanced services in a shipyard. In order to build a smart pipe system, different technologies are selected and evaluated, concluding that passive and active RFID are currently the most appropriate technologies to create it. Furthermore, some promising indoor positioning results obtained in a pipe workshop are presented, showing that multi-antenna algorithms and Kalman filtering can help to stabilize Received Signal Strength (RSS) and improve the overall accuracy of the system.

Abstract:As the world becomes more connected and customer's 'needs and wants' lean more towards bespoke products, the way they are designed and manufactured must adapt. Recognised as the main driver for the future of the manufacturing value chain, Industry 4.0 (i4) is rapidly gaining momentum worldwide. One of the key enablers of the i4 design model to achieve mass customisation manufactured at a mass production cost is the computational intelligence based Computer-Automated Design (CAutoD). This paper demonstrates how CAutoD realises the i4 concept for smart design of future ships and smart ships through-life. Following an overview of the i4 and CAutoD interface, a smart ship design technique is introduced to form an automated closed-loop approach to the entire ship design process. Then, key challenges and future directions on this roadmap are discussed. Lastly, a framework in which the concepts of morphing and free-form deformation are embedded into an evolutionary algorithm is developed to automate the design and optimisation process of the hull form.

Abstract:The decentralization of production processes organized in global supply chains has made it possible to connect the different levels through industrial digitalization, an evolution derived from the Fourth Industrial Revolution which incorporates enabling technologies. This context raises the need to analyze sectors that, due to the complexity of their projects, require more efficient supply chain management. Two clear examples of these sectors are aerospace and shipbuilding, which demand greater efficiency and sustainability in their operations. The main objective of this study is to compare these two sectors to evaluate the degree of sustainability of their supply chains and how Industry 4.0 technologies have contributed to achieving these goals. To perform this, the Delphi method will be used, a tool that collects information through expert opinions, which will provide key indicators for the comparison. The use of this method will facilitate the identification of convergences and divergences in the management of sustainability in both sectors. Through this analysis, the expected results will reflect the specific needs of each industry in terms of productivity and sustainability. Thus, the study will offer a comprehensive view of how the aerospace and shipbuilding sectors can move toward more sustainable and efficient production models, integrating Industry 4.0 concepts and improving the management of their global supply chains.

Abstract:The digital twin (DT) approach has risen in popularity for applications in many industrial process managements. By applying the "Shipyard 4.0" digital transformation trend, the ship industry is developing techniques able to reduce risks by improving operation process management. This study proposes a combination of a DT approach and practical experiment as part of a five-tier framework for DT-driven process management in the ship industry. This study focuses on the characteristic scenarios and crucial parameters within the ship engine system and shipping cargo container in operation procedures. DT-based models and platforms are established in this study based on the basic modeling of Maya and scene rendering of Unity 3D. To address the fusion issue of multi-source heterogeneous data in the ship operation process, a Bayesian neural network (BNN) method is introduced into DT's virtual model layer and data support layer. By integrating an improved BNN-based algorithm into DT-based models, the collected data can be extracted and aggregated accordingly. In the ship engine room, the operating temperature is selected as a critical parameter, with the best mean percentage deviation (MPD) between DT-driven predictions and test value of 3.18%. During the shipping cargo container process, the results indicate that DT-based models have acceptable performances under different conditions, with optimal MPDs of 5.22%.

Abstract:Fishing vessels need to adapt to and mitigate climate changes, but solution development requires better information about the environment and vessel operations. Even if ships generate large amounts of potentially useful data, there is a large variety of sources and formats. This lack of standardization makes identification and use of key data challenging and hinders its use in improving operational performance and vessel design. The work described in this paper aims to provide cost-effective tools for systematic data acquisition for fishing vessels, supporting digitalization of the fishing vessel operation and performance monitoring. This digitalization is needed to facilitate the reduction of emissions as a critical environmental problem and industry costs critical for industry sustainability. The resulting monitoring system interfaces onboard systems and sensors, processes the data, and makes it available in a shared onboard data space. From this data space, 209 signals are recorded at different frequencies and uploaded to onshore servers for postprocessing. The collected data describe both ship operation, onboard energy system, and the surrounding environment. Nine of the oceanographic variables have been preselected to be potentially useful for public scientific repositories, such as Copernicus and EMODnet. The data are also used for fuel prediction models, species distribution models, and route optimization models.

Abstract:Abstract Digital twin technology has been widely developed and very active in many areas of intelligent manufacturing in recent years. Due to the complexity of ship equipment, the impact of variable loads and the high salt spray environment of the ocean, performance degradation was rapid and failures occurred frequently. Its full life cycle operation and maintenance was the main problem that restricts its performance and affects the ship’s ability to carry out its mission. Based on the analysis of the development status of digital twin technology and its application in the full life cycle of equipment, this paper proposes a framework for intelligent operation and maintenance of marine devices based on digital twin and discusses the challenges faced by digital twin technology in the application of marine equipment, so as to provide reference and reference for accelerating the role of digital twin technology as a combat multiplier in marine equipment.

Abstract:Shipping is looking to progressively develop into a zero‐emissions industry, in agreement with pledges made under the Initial IMO Strategy on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from ships, and its vision to phasing out greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible during this century. International regulations currently focus on the design and operational phases of the industry, which carries the largest life‐cycle climate impact of a ship. As the level of emissions from the operational phase is reduced, the inclusion of emissions from shipyards during construction, maintenance, and disposal becomes increasingly important. The main objective of this study is to improve energy efficiency and reduce air emissions in the shipbuilding industry through the development of an energy‐management framework. A systematic literature review was used to define criteria for clean and green shipyards and to develop a novel, holistic, systematic, and transdisciplinary framework for energy management. The energy‐management framework is aimed at creating a decision‐support mechanism for complex situations, using a multiple criteria decision‐making approach. The energy‐management framework was applied to case studies of a Bangladeshi and an Italian shipyard. The potential implementation of the framework in yards of different sizes, types and geographical location demonstrates that it has the potential to improve energy management and thereby energy efficiency while increasing productivity and profitability in shipyards. Abstract:This paper presents the comprehensive state-of-the-art on the challenges that short sea shipping currently faces across the world. The concept and its relationship with coastal shipping are introduced, followed by a review of the EU policies for short sea shipping and its practical impacts in modal split. A survey of the literature on the strong and weak points of this form of transportation is carried out, aimed at explaining the difficulties in achieving relevant modal shifts from road to sea. The experience with short sea shipping across the world is described and discussed, providing a global perspective. The paper then discusses the main challenges and opportunities in this field, namely decarbonisation, autonomous navigation, and digitalization. Conclusions are drawn on the possible impact of these game changing developments in this segment of the shipping industry.

Abstract:Existing research in the shipbuilding field tends to focus on isolated single aspects of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) without a full picture. To address this gap, this paper seeks to offer a thorough and in-depth examination of the concepts and technologies necessary to integrate I4.0 into the design, construction, maintenance, and other stages throughout the entire life cycle of a ship. This paper will firstly examine the recent developments and identify the gaps in I4.0 application within shipbuilding. By conducting a systematic literature review on 68 publications through an appropriate review methodology, we synthesize the current state of I4.0 research in the shipbuilding industry, propose a framework for the application of I4.0 in shipbuilding to analyze the progression and research agenda of I4.0 in the shipbuilding sector, and discuss its implications. The Shipbuilding 4.0 framework proposed comprises five main components: concepts, value chain, smart factory, smart manufacturing, infrastructure, and technologies. The proposed framework aims to enhance the understanding of both academics and practitioners regarding the specific needs of the shipbuilding industry and the role I4.0 can and should play in its advancement.
