Abstract:General studies have shown thai fibre formation is similar in all wool follicles in anagen but that the size and shape of follicles may vary according to the type of fibre being produced or the breed of sheep, Factors affecting fibre production result in changes in follicle morphology which are poorly defined. Cellular studies of the follicle have further clarified the morphological role of some cell lines in fibre production, e.g. the inner root sheath cuticle, but not others. Possible cellular mechanisms by which follicle morphology may be altered include cell number, changes in dermal papilla size, cell type, cell size, cell death, and relative cell movement. However, more information is required to understand how these mechanisms interact dynamically to vary follicle morphology in relation to fibre production and properties.
