Abstract:We derive a generalized matrix version of Pellet's theorem, itself based on a generalized Rouch\'{e} theorem for matrix-valued functions, to generate upper, lower, and internal bounds on the eigenvalues of matrix polynomials. Variations of the theorem are suggested to try and overcome situations where Pellet's theorem cannot be applied.

In terms of the determinant of A and Frobenius norm of we derive a bound for the relative spectral variation of with respect to A , provided A is invertible. In addition, in terms of the Frobenius norm of , we obtain a new bound for the absolute spectral variation . In appropriate situations our results are considerably sharper than the well-known bounds.

The algorithms are based on the properties of continuous functions. The method can provide the tightest eigenvalue bounds and improve some former research results. Abstract:We consider a family of Gram matrices of pairs of bases of a finite dimensional vector space of polynomials with respect to certain indefinite inner products. Such family includes all the generalized confluent Vandermonde matrices relative to any polynomial basis, like the Chebyshev-Vandermonde matrices, for example. Using the biorthogonality of pairs of bases with respect to a divided difference functional we obtain properties of matrices and functionals, and interpolation formulas. We show that the computation of the inverse of a Vandermonde-like matrix is essentially equivalent to the computation of the partial fractions decompositions of a set of rational functions with a common denominator. We also explain why the various Chebyshev-Vandermonde matrices are the simplest generalizations of the classic Vandermonde matrices and describe a simple algorithm for the computation of their inverses, which requires a number of multiplications of the order of 3N.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a theory for bounding the minimum eigenvalues, maximum eigenvalues, and condition numbers of stiffness matrices arising from the p-version of finite element analysis. Bounds are derived for the eigenvalues and the condition numbers, which are valid for stiffness matrices based on a set of general basis functions that can be used in the p-version. For a set of hierarchical basis functions satisfying the usual local support condition that has been popularly used in the p-version, explicit bounds are derived for the minimum eigenvalues, maximum eigenvalues, and condition numbers of stiffness matrices. We prove that the condition numbers of the stiffness matrices grow like p 4(d-1) , where d is the number of dimensions. Our results disprove a conjecture of Olsen and Douglas in which the authors assert that regardless of the choice of basis, the condition numbers grow like p 4d or faster. Numerical results are also presented which verify that our theoretical bounds are correct.

Abstract:It is shown how mixed finite element methods for symmetric positive definite eigenvalue problems related to partial differential operators can provide guaranteed lower eigenvalue bounds. The method is based on a classical compatibility condition (inclusion of kernels) of the mixed scheme and on local constants related to compact embeddings, which are often known explicitly. Applications include scalar second-order elliptic operators, linear elasticity, and the Steklov eigenvalue problem.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate error bounds for convex polynomials. We prove that for a convex polynomial f in n variables which is not everywhere positive and which is not constant on any affine subspace, either f is a sum of a convex polynomial in fewer variables and a linear form with negative coefficients or the negativity set of f is compact. As an application, we deduce various types of error bounds for unconstrained and polyhedral-constrained convex polynomials.
Exact Algorithms for Computing Generalized Eigenspaces of Matrices via Annihilating Polynomials

Abstract:An effective exact method is proposed for computing generalized eigenspaces of a matrix of integers or rational numbers. Keys of our approach are the use of minimal annihilating polynomials and the concept of the Jourdan-Krylov basis. A new method, called Jordan-Krylov elimination, is introduced to design an algorithm for computing Jordan-Krylov basis. The resulting algorithm outputs generalized eigenspaces as a form of Jordan chains. Notably, in the output, components of generalized eigenvectors are expressed as polynomials in the associated eigenvalue as a variable.

Abstract:We present precise bit and degree estimates for the optimal value of the polynomial optimization problem $f^*:=\text{inf}_{x\in \mathscr{X}}~f(x)$, where $\mathscr{X}$ is a semi-algebraic set satisfying some non-degeneracy conditions. Our bounds depend on the degree, the bitsize of $f$, and the polynomials defining $\mathscr{X}$, and are single exponential with respect to the number of variables. They generalize the single exponential bounds from Jeronimo, Perrucci, and Tsigaridas (SIAM Journal on Optimization, 23(1):241--255, 2013) for the minimum of a polynomial function on a compact connected component of a basic closed semi-algebraic set. The tools that we use allow us to obtain specialized bounds and dedicated algorithms for two large families of polynomial optimization problems in which the optimum value might not be attained. The first family forms a dense set of real polynomial functions with a fixed collection of Newton polytopes; we provide the best approximation yet for the bifurcation set, which contains the optimal value, and we deduce an effective method for computations. As for the second family, we consider any unconstrained polynomial optimization problem; we present more precise bounds, together with a better bit complexity estimate of an algorithm to compute the optimal value.

Abstract:The paper considers the eigenvalve problem for a polynomial m × n matrix F(μ) of rank ρ. Algorithms. allowing one to reduce this problem to the generalized matrix eigenvalve problem are suggested. The algorithms are based on combining rank factorization methods with the method of hereditary pencils. Methods for exhausting the subspaces of polynomial solutions of zero index from the matrix nullspaces and for isolating the regular kernel from F(μ), with its subsequent linearization, are proposed. Numerical methods for eigenvalues of singular polynomial eigenvalue problems

Abstract:Recently, three numerical methods for the computation of eigenvalues of singular matrix pencils, based on a rank-completing perturbation, a rank-projection, or an augmentation were developed. We show that all three approaches can be generalized to treat singular polynomial eigenvalue problems. The common denominator of all three approaches is a transformation of a singular into a regular matrix polynomial whose eigenvalues are a disjoint union of the eigenvalues of the singular polynomial, called true eigenvalues, and additional fake eigenvalues. The true eigenvalues can then be separated from the fake eigenvalues using information on the corresponding left and right eigenvectors. We illustrate the approaches on several interesting applications, including bivariate polynomial systems and ZGV points.

Abstract:The Szász inequality is a classical result providing a bound for polynomials with zeros in the upper half of the complex plane in terms of its low-order coefficients. Some generalisations of this result to polynomials in several variables were done by Borcea-Brändén and Knese. In this article the inequality is discussed in the context of matrix polynomials and matrix variables. As a byproduct we improve the scalar Szász inequality by relaxing the assumption of the location of zeros.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the lower bound property of the discrete eigenvalues by the rectangular Morley elements of the biharmonic operators in both two and three dimensions. The analysis relies on an identity for the errors of eigenvalues. We explore a refined property of the canonical interpolation operators and use it to analyze the key term in this identity. In particular, we show that such a term is of higher order for two dimensions, and is negative and of second order for three dimensions, which causes a main difficulty. To overcome it, we propose a novel decomposition of the first term in the aforementioned identity. Finally, we establish a saturation condition to show that the discrete eigenvalues are smaller than the exact ones. We present some numerical results to demonstrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:For a given matrix with dominant diagonal, a number of convenient upper and lower bounds for the corresponding determinant are available in the literature. These inequalities are used here to derive bounds for a general system of orthogonal polynomials for a specified range of values of the argument. The results thus obtained are applied to the classical Jacobi and related polynomials.

Abstract:The polynomial eigenvalue problem arises in many applications and has received a great deal of attention over the last decade. The use of root-finding methods to solve the polynomial eigenvalue problem dates back to the work of Kublanovskaya (1969, 1970) and has received a resurgence due to the work of Bini and Noferini (2013). In this paper, we present a method which uses Laguerre iteration for computing the eigenvalues of a matrix polynomial. An effective method based on the numerical range is presented for computing initial estimates to the eigenvalues of a matrix polynomial. A detailed explanation of the stopping criteria is given, and it is shown that under suitable conditions we can guarantee the backward stability of the eigenvalues computed by our method. Then, robust methods are provided for computing both the right and left eigenvectors and the condition number of each eigenpair. Applications for Hessenberg and tridiagonal matrix polynomials are given and we show that both structures benefit from substantial computational savings. Finally, we present several numerical experiments to verify the accuracy of our method and its competitiveness for solving the roots of a polynomial and the tridiagonal eigenvalue problem.
