Abstract:A precise ocean bottom map is often desired for ocean surveying. To meet the demand, the multi-beam echo sounder (MBES) has been developed and commonly used. An MBES usually forms multiple receiving beams across-track first, then determines the bottom echo time for each beam, and finally calculates depth from echo time and direction. In this paper, a sequential filtering approach, exploiting ping to ping data correlation, is proposed, which is capable of realizing fast and accurate estimation and tracking of the seafloor depth. By the employment of this method, when the measurement Signal-Noise-Ratio (SNR) is below 35dB, the root mean square error (RMSE) of depth estimation is much lower than the conventional approach, and nearly reaches the posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound. The results demonstrate that the sequential filtering approach, applied to MBES measurements, could be a promising technique for seafloor topography estimation and tracking.

Abstract:A geoacoustic inversion technique for high-frequency (12 kHz) multibeam sonar data is presented as a means to classify the seafloor sediment in shallow water (40--300 m). The inversion makes use of backscattered data at a variety of grazing angles to estimate mean grain size. The need for sediment type and the large amounts of multibeam data being collected with the Naval Oceanographic Office's Simrad EM 121A systems, have fostered the development of algorithms to process the EM 121A acoustic backscatter into maps of sediment type. The APL-UW (Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington) backscattering model is used with simulated annealing to invert for six geoacoustic parameters. For the inversion, three of the parameters are constrained according to empirical correlations with mean grain size, which is introduced as an unconstrained parameter. The four unconstrained (free) parameters are mean grain size, sediment volume interaction, and two seafloor roughness parameters. Acoustic sediment classification is performed in the Onslow Bay region off the coast of North Carolina using data from the 12kHz Simrad EM 121A multibeam sonar system. Raw hydrophone data is beamformed into 122 beams with a 120-degree swath on the ocean floor, and backscattering strengths are calculated for each beam and for each ping. Ground truth consists of 68 grab samples in the immediate vicinity of the sonar survey, which have been analyzed for mean grain size. Mean grain size from the inversion shows 90\% agreement with the ground truth and may be a useful tool for high-frequency acoustic sediment classification in shallow water.

Abstract:Acoustic-wave based sub-bottom profiler (SBP) and electromagnetic-wave based ground penetrating radar (GPR) are two complementary geophysical tools that were used to map bathymetry and sediment sublayers in shallow waters. Near shore regions in Great Lakes, inland lakes, and rivers in Wisconsin, USA were examined using both geophysical tools. In areas with high silt and clay contents, such as Lake Superior, the SBP was able to image the sediment sublayers, whereas in the areas with sand cover and vegetation, the GPR provided sediment stratigraphic information. The higher vertical and horizontal resolutions of the SBP surveys provided more accurate and detailed bathymetry information than GPR surveys. In the Yahara River, SBP surveys imaged blurring contrasts between sublayers due to the gradual deposition of sediments; however, GPR provided sharp delineations of sediment layers but was only able to image the top two sublayers because of the high silt and clay electromagnetic wave attenuation. To confirm these findings, Shelby tubes and hydraulic jetting were used to collect ground-truth information. Sublayer thicknesses are estimated by evaluating acoustic and electromagnetic wave velocities using a mixture-based equation. In Lake Michigan, both techniques show similar sediment stratigraphy, indicating that the average sediment particle size ranges between silt and fine sand. Three-dimensional maps of bathymetry and subbottom sediments are also constructed. Overall it is shown that the combination of GPR and SBP techniques compensates each survey's strengths in an effective methodology for imaging bathymetry and sub-bottom profiles in shallow water environments.
An Imaging Algorithm for High-speed Side-scan Sonar Based on Multi-beam Forming Technology

Abstract:With the increasing attention on oceanography, more effective exploration technology has been of great interests in the community of ocean engineering. Side-scan sonar is a popular imaging equipment for seabed topography; however, it is commonly used under 4 knots, which does not meet the actual demand of the modern oceanographic research. This paper proposes a high-speed side-scan sonar imaging scheme based on multi-beam forming technology. In this scheme, the digital signal processing system can adjust the maximum response direction of the receiving array by introducing appropriate phase shift or time delay to the output, so as to increase the scanning range and then improve operation efficiency. In order to verify the feasibility of this imaging algorithm, an ocean environment model is constructed, which simulates the acoustic propagation theory, the principle of seabed acoustic backscattering and the acoustic signal modulation method. After analyzing the acoustic characteristics of uniform linear array, an underwater acoustic transducer with multiple receiving subarrays is designed. In the process of simulated navigation, the receiving subarrays will generate the electrical signal containing seabed acoustic information. Based on the simulation signal, the parameters of the digital filter in the actual system can be determined in advance, which provides convenience for later processing. The time delay matrix of each receiving channel based on dynamic focusing beamforming method can be verified by imaging the seabed model. The processed acoustic data are combined with GPS information and heading angle to generate seabed scanning image in the host computer system. This paper mainly presents the imaging algorithm of multi-beam side-scan sonar digital signal processing system.
A broadband ADCP scattering echo model

Abstract:Acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) is designed to measure the velocity profile within the water column, whilst the ability of ADCP to measure the suspended sediment concentration has been investigated for a long time. The key of the measurement is to analyze multi-frequency backscattering intensity, and to extract suspended sediment information using acoustic inversion algorithms. To investigate multi-frequency backscattering intensity from aqueous layers, a broadband ADCP scattering echo model is presented. First we analyze the detailed sound propagation under the ADCP measurement scenario, in terms of transmission loss, volume scattering strength etc. Then the broadband scattering is characterized as a filtering process in the frequency domain, and the Fourier synthesis technology is used to reconstruct the scattering echo signal. The model results have been compared with field measurement data, showing a good performance in estimating backscattering intensity and a good correspondence between the measured and modeled scattering echo signals statistically.

Abstract:For health and impact studies of water systems, monitoring underwater environments is essential, for which multi-frequency single- and multibeam echosounders are commonly used state-of-the-art technologies. However, the current scarcity of sediment reference datasets of both bottom backscatter angular response and water column scattering hampers empirical data interpretation. Comprehensive reference data derived from measurements in a controlled environment should optimize the use of empirical backscatter data. To prepare for such innovative experiments, we conducted a feasibility experiment in the Delta Flume (Deltares, The Netherlands). Several configurations of sonar data were recorded of the flume floor and suspended sediment plumes. The results revealed that flume reverberation was sufficiently low and that the differential settling of fine-sand plumes in the water column was clearly detected. Following this successful feasibility test, future comprehensive experiments will feature multi-frequency multi-angle measurements on a variety of sediment types, additional scatterers and sediment plumes, resulting in reference datasets for an improved interpretation of underwater backscatter measurements for scientific observation and sustainable management.

Abstract:Extensive seabed sediment mapping is highly relevant to describe marine ecosystems and to quantify the distribution and extent of benthic habitats. Compared to traditional mapping methods, primarily based on bed sampling, multibeam echo sounding (MBES) is a time-efficient tool to acquire high-resolution bathymetric and backscatter data over large areas. We use a Bayesian method for unsupervised acoustic sediment classification (ASC) of MBES backscatter data of the Cleaver Bank, Netherlands Continental Shelf. On these sparsely distributed backscatter datasets, we tested and evaluated different Kriging algorithms, showing that Ordinary Kriging results in a reliable map. We introduce a new approach to classify interpolated MBES backscatter based on the Bayesian method for producing full-coverage sediment maps. Comparison to a traditional sediment map and in situ measurements shows that this approach resolves lateral heterogeneities (kilometers). When evaluating the high-resolution sediment map obtained from the Bayesian method, based on the actual backscatter, mapping laterally heterogeneous sediments significantly improved (meters). In order to create the optimal sediment map, we aimed to integrate ASC into existing maps, which, however, requires quantified spatial uncertainties of both considered maps. Finally, the low discrimination power of MBES backscatter for coarse sediments is highlighted as a shortcoming of current ASC mapping.

Abstract:This study applies three classification methods exploiting the angular dependence of acoustic seafloor backscatter along with high resolution sub-bottom profiling for seafloor sediment characterization in the Eckernförde Bay, Baltic Sea Germany. This area is well suited for acoustic backscatter studies due to its shallowness, its smooth bathymetry and the presence of a wide range of sediment types. Backscatter data were acquired using a Seabeam1180 (180 kHz) multibeam echosounder and sub-bottom profiler data were recorded using a SES-2000 parametric sonar transmitting 6 and 12 kHz. The high density of seafloor soundings allowed extracting backscatter layers for five beam angles over a large part of the surveyed area. A Bayesian probability method was employed for sediment classification based on the backscatter variability at a single incidence angle, whereas Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) and Principal Components Analysis (PCA) were applied to the multi-angle layers. The Bayesian approach was used for identifying the optimum number of acoustic classes because cluster validation is carried out prior to class assignment and class outputs are ordinal categorical values. The method is based on the principle that backscatter values from a single incidence angle express a normal distribution for a particular sediment type. The resulting Bayesian classes were well correlated to median grain sizes and the percentage of coarse material. The MLC method uses angular response information from five layers of training areas extracted from the Bayesian classification map. The subsequent PCA analysis is based on the transformation of these five layers into two principal components that comprise most of the data variability. These principal components were clustered in five classes after running an external cluster validation test. In general both methods MLC and PCA, separated the various sediment types effectively, showing good agreement (kappa >0.7) with the Bayesian approach which also correlates well with ground truth data (r2 > 0.7). In addition, sub-bottom data were used in conjunction with the Bayesian classification results to characterize acoustic classes with respect to their geological and stratigraphic interpretation. The joined interpretation of seafloor and sub-seafloor data sets proved to be an efficient approach for a better understanding of seafloor backscatter patchiness and to discriminate acoustically similar classes in different geological/bathymetric settings.

3D Suspended Sediment Concentration Mapping Through GF-1 Satellite Image and Kriging-based Optimal Shipping Path Planning for Acoustic Subsurface Measurements.

Abstract:Understanding suspended sediment concentration (SSC) distribution is of great significance to the comprehensive management of offshore engineering, structure safety and landsea interaction material flux. Combing satellite remote sensing, which has the advantage on quickly and dynamically obtaining the spatial distribution of sea surface SSC with high spatial resolution and large scale spatial coverage, with the acoustic-based method, which is able to obtain high temporal and spatial resolution data along the vertical water column profile, has been proved as promising in obtaining three-dimensional SSC distribution in the target area. In this paper, based on the sea surface SSC map inversed from GF-1 satellite data, we intend to design optimal sampling route for acoustic-based in-situ measurement to maximize the environmental information with the least experiment cost. An optimal shipping path planning algorithm is proposed, in which the Kriging variance is utilized as a reward function to find the most informative sampling points, and the optimal sampling path is then planned to bring the ship as close as possible to those sampling points concerning the cost constraint. Meanwhile, we also use Voronoi polygon to accelerate the operation. The effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by the in-situ measurement near Zhoushan island. A 3D SSC map is then produced with satellite inversed surface SSC and subsurface SSC along the depth profile measured by acoustic based in-situ measurements in the planned optimal sampling routine. We also test the algorithm in a wider sea area with more complicated hydrodynamic environment based on the satellite SSC and proved to be suitable for supplementation of large-scale measurement network.
Relating side scan sonar backscatter data to geotechnical properties for the investigation of surficial seabed sediments

Abstract:Side scan sonar is a common tool for seafloor imaging and surveying due its efficiency and high resolution. The backscatter information from side scan sonar enables to identify sediment types and seabed roughness, often used to study sediment dynamics. Theory suggests that side scan sonar backscatter can be correlated to the geotechnical properties of the seabed surface. This could enhance the prediction of erodibility and efficiency of seabed sediment characterization, considering that side scan sonar can offer large spatial coverage in a short time. In this study, high-frequency (1000 kHz) side scan sonar backscatter data, sediment samples, and in-situ seabed strength profiles were collected of the seabed surface at ten locations. Statistical analysis of the backscatter data compared with geotechnical data showed trends between mean backscatter, soil strength, and textural sediment properties. Generally, mean backscatter increased when sediment strength and mean grain size increased and when water content and fines content decreased. However, roughness from bedforms, the presence of oysters, shell hash as well as variations in water content (i.e., porosity) of the seafloor heavily influenced the backscatter and sometimes masked any relationships with the strength properties directly.

Abstract:The Seabed Characterization Experiment, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, was carried out 5 March–10 April, 2017 (SBCEX17) on the New England Mud Patch, approximately 100 km south of Martha’s Vineyard. The main SBCEX17 experimental site covers an area of 15 km × 30 km with water depth in the range of 75–80 m. The Sediment Acoustic-speed Measurement System (SAMS) is designed to measure sediment sound speed and attenuation simultaneously over the surficial 3 m of sediments. Sediment sound speed results in the frequency band of 2–10 kHz can be found in an earlier publication (IEEE JOE, doi:10.1109/JOE.2019.2946004). During SBCEX17, SAMS was successfully deployed at 18 sites, which were chosen to be co-located with gravity or piston cores that were collected during the two recent survey cruises in 2015 and 2016. In this talk, our previous results are extended to include both sound-speed and attenuation. The frequency range is widened, and preliminary results for the dependence of sediment sound-speed and attenuation on both range and depth are presented. Sediment geoacoustic properties obtained by SAMS at the 18 sites are compared with historical and recent sediment property surveys giving information on bottom layering, porosity, and grain size. Shallow Water High Resolution Bathymetric Side Scan Sonar

Abstract:With about 2 years' work, the Instituted of Acoustic, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS) and the Teledyne RD Technology (Shanghai) Inc. (RDT) have developed the Shallow water High Resolution Bathymetric Side Scan Sonar (SBSSS). It is mainly composed of sonar deck control unit, sonar housing (include electronic unit and watertight pod) and two sonar arrays. The SBSSS can obtain the incidence angle of the backscatter from the water bottom on sonar array, directly. Using this system, the grazing angle, distance and signal intensity (acoustic intensity) of the target on the water bottom or in the water can be measured. Working with motion sensor, CTD sensor and GPS (or RTK) system, the SBSSS can get the high resolution terrain and geomorphy of the water bottom, synchronously. After post-processing, the contour map and side scanning map, which is better than the normal side scanning map, can be obtained. The SBSSS also can be used to detect the target on the water bottom or in the water.The technique of sea bottom automatic detect and estimation direction of arrival (DOA) based on multi-subarray subspace fitting (SBAD-EDMSF) is researched and progressed. It can improve the accuracy of depth measurement. Some other theory about the SBSSS, such as estimation technique about the number of signal sources, signal copy technique, attitude correct technique, real time signal processing technique and etc., is studied. Using these methods, the sonar can get better result in the complex acoustic field in the shallow water. So the theory info about the SBSSS is found. It is used to design the sonar and processing the sonar data. The good results are obtained.The maximum working depth of this system is 300 meters. The maximum working range for the depth is 12 times water depth, and for the side scan is 400 meters per side. The cross track resolution is 5 cm, and the minimum detect height is 10 cm.The lake test at Qiandao Lake, P. R. China and the ultra shallow water sea test (5 to 10 meters) in Qingdao, P. R. China are implemented. A water area of 2000mx800m is surveyed. The contour map and the side scan map are obtained. Using the SBSSS, a 30 cm diameter buoyant plastic sphere is detected. After the post processing for the survey data, the measurement accuracy of depth is basically corresponded with the special order standard of IHO.The SBSSS also can be mounted on the automatic underwater vehicle (AUV), remote operated vehicle (ROV), towed body and other underwater vehicles. It can be used to measure the small target, the terrain and the geomorphy of the sea bottom.This paper makes a brief introduce of the system structure, the theory info, the lake test results and the sea test results of the SBSSS.
Examining the Links between Multi-Frequency Multibeam Backscatter Data and Sediment Grain Size

Abstract:Acoustic methods are routinely used to provide broad scale information on the geographical distribution of benthic marine habitats and sedimentary environments. Although single-frequency multibeam echosounder surveys have dominated seabed characterisation for decades, multifrequency approaches are now gaining favour in order to capture different frequency responses from the same seabed type. The aim of this study is to develop a robust modelling framework for testing the potential application and value of multifrequency (30, 95, and 300 kHz) multibeam backscatter responses to characterize sediments’ grain size in an area with strong geomorphological gradients and benthic ecological variability. We fit a generalized linear model on a multibeam backscatter and its derivatives to examine the explanatory power of single-frequency and multifrequency models with respect to the mean sediment grain size obtained from the grab samples. A strong and statistically significant (p < 0.05) correlation between the mean backscatter and the absolute values of the mean sediment grain size for the data was noted. The root mean squared error (RMSE) values identified the 30 kHz model as the best performing model responsible for explaining the most variation (84.3%) of the mean grain size at a statistically significant output (p < 0.05) with an adjusted r2 = 0.82. Overall, the single low-frequency sources showed a marginal gain on the multifrequency model, with the 30 kHz model driving the significance of this multifrequency model, and the inclusion of the higher frequencies diminished the level of agreement. We recommend further detailed and sufficient ground-truth data to better predict sediment properties and to discriminate benthic habitats to enhance the reliability of multifrequency backscatter data for the monitoring and management of marine protected areas.

Seabed sub-bottom sediment classification using parametric sub-bottom profiler

Abstract:Many studies have been published concerning classification techniques of seabed surfaces using single beam, multibeam, and side scan sonars, while few paid attentions to classify sub-bottom layers using a non-linear Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP). Non-linear SBP is known for its high resolution images due to the very short pulse length and aperture angle for high and low frequencies. This research is devoted to develop an energy based model that automatically characterizes the layered sediment types as a contribution step toward “what lies where in 3D?”. Since the grain size is a function of the reflection coefficient, the main task is to compute the reflection coefficients where high impedance contrast is observed. The developed model extends the energy based surface model (Van Walree et al., 2006) to account for returns reflection of sub-layers where the reflection coefficients are computed sequentially after estimating the geo-acoustic parameters of the previous layer. The validation of the results depended on the model stability. However, physical core samples are still in favor to confirm the results. The model showed consistent stable results that agreed with the core samples knowledge of the studied area. The research concluded that the extended model approximates the reflection coefficient values and will be very promising if volume scatters and multiple reflections are included.

Abstract:Fine-grained sediments commonly occur in areas of the continental shelf where wave and current energy are weak. Bulk density, compressional wave speed and attenuation are fundamental physical properties of these sediments required for predicting the response of the seabed for diverse branches of marine science. The traditional coring approach is time and labor-intensive, with large uncertainties associated with sediment disturbance in the sampling phase. Acoustic methods offer the advantages of remote sensing, i.e., sampling the sediment structure without mechanical disturbance and a significantly larger seabed coverage rate per unit time. Two different acoustic methods are described: one using short-range single-bounce interactions with the seabed, and the second using long-range modal propagation to infer the sediment properties. The relative strengths and sensitivities of each approach are explored through simulations guided by experience with measured data.

Abstract:The calibration of multibeam echosounders for backscatter measurements can be conducted efficiently and accurately using data from surveys over a reference natural area, implying appropriate measurements of the local absolute values of backscatter. Such a shallow area (20-m mean depth) has been defined and qualified in the Bay of Brest (France), and chosen as a reference area for multibeam systems operating at 200 and 300 kHz. The absolute reflectivity over the area was measured using a calibrated single-beam fishery echosounder (Simrad EK60) tilted at incidence angles varying between 0° and 60° with a step of 3°. This reference backscatter level is then compared to the average backscatter values obtained by a multibeam echosounder (here a Kongsberg EM 2040-D) at a close frequency and measured as a function of angle; the difference gives the angular bias applicable to the multibeam system for recorded level calibration. The method is validated by checking the single- and multibeam data obtained on other areas with sediment types different from the reference area.

Abstract:The use of quantitative broadband echosounders for biological studies and surveys offers considerable advantages over narrowband echosounders. These include improved spectral-based target identification and significantly increased ability to resolve individual targets. Biological studies and surveys typically require accurate measures of backscatter strength and we present here a systematic and comprehensive explanation of how to derive quantitative estimates of target strength and volume backscattering, as a function of frequency from broadband echosounder signals.

Abstract:Near surface seafloor properties are needed for recreational, commercial, and military applications. Construction projects on the ocean seafloors often require extensive knowledge about strength, deformability, hydraulic, thermal, acoustic, and seismic characteristics for locating stable environments and ensuring proper functioning of structures, pipelines, and other installations on the surface of and buried into the marine sediments. The military is also interested in a variety of seafloor properties as they impact sound propagation, mine impact burial, trafficability, bearing capacity, time-dependent settlement, and stability of objects on the seafloor. Point measurements of sediment properties are done using core samplers and sediment grab devices (with subsequent lab analysis) and in-situ probes. These techniques are expensive in terms of ship time and provide limited area coverage. Sub-bottom acoustic and electromagnetic sensors can provide profiles of near surface sediment information with improved coverage rates. Fusion techniques are being developed to provide areal extent of sediment information from multiple sensors. This paper examines the recent history of techniques used to measure sediment properties in the upper portions of the seafloor and in shallow (<100m) water.

Abstract:Multibeam echo sounders (MBES) are tools used to gather geophysical information on the seafloor and watercolumn which are important for feature detection, identifying gas seeps, and characterizing the seafloor, among others. At high frequencies (>100 kHz), MBES can be calibrated for their ensonification patterns in test tanks. However, deep water MBES feature long transmit arrays and varying geometries that make tank calibration impractical. The transmit arrays can be over 8m and have a far field range in the hundreds of meters. In addition, these systems use beam steering techniques to segment the swath into multiple sectors to mitigate ship motions, which complicates the radiated pattern and return intensity. This study will better characterize the radiated sound field of deep water MBES for return intensity calibration. A MBES survey was conducted using a Kongsberg EM122 MBES on the SCORE range, a submerged broadband hydrophone array. Hydrophones were spaced ~5 km apart and were continuously recording during the survey. The EM112 is a multisector dual swath system operated at 12 kHz with CW waves. Hydrophone data were analyzed, and the resultant radiated sound field was determined at different distances and angles.

Marine Sediment Mapping Using Multi-Source and Multi-Dimensional Acoustic Images Based on Evidential Fusion

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel method to fuse multi-source acoustical remote sensing images for marine sediment mapping. Acoustic images from sidescan sonar, multibeam bathymetry, and sub-bottom profiler describe the 2-D, 2.5-D, and 3-D properties of the seabed sediment respectively. In attempt to make use of the multi-dimensional information from the multi-source data, the evidential fusion method, combined with object-based classification and spatial overlay analysis is proposed. Firstly, marine sediments are independently classified in the multi-source acoustic images with object based methods. Then, the spatial overlay analysis is conducted to group the classification results as evidence of different sediments. Finally, the evidential fusion method is employed to determine the exact distribution of sediments on the map. The proposed method introduces the classification results of sub-bottom profiler data that provide useful information, even though the data is limited in spatial coverage and is rarely used in automatic sediment mapping. The experiments show that the fused data from the three different sources of acoustic images significantly improve the mapping accuracy.
