Abstract:In several experiments for measuring various classes of responses, performed at least some four decades ago, on driven physical systems in a far-from-equilibrium (or, from a steady-state) situation, early stage inverse-power-law relaxation dynamics had been observed. Since then, this intriguing behavior raised its head off and on until it regained its central role in the mainstream physical sciences about a decade ago with a breakdown and/or avalanche type (also called self-organized critical) behavior of the sand-pile model and a host of other similar problems. In this communication, we report on the non-equilibrium dynamics in our Random Resistor cum Tunneling-bond Network (RRTN) model. Previously, this semi-classical, or semi-quantum percolative model has been highly successful in explaining the static behavior for various random composite systems. In our dynamic studies for the last several years, we observe two initial power-laws (more than a decade each) and then an exponential relaxation for asymptotically large time scales. Efforts were made to interpret our results with various existing theoretical wisdom/s (which give, only one power-law relaxation for each such system near its breakdown or run-away type state). Obviously, our results (with two different power-laws) are richer than those particular cases. Further, a complete theory is still lacking probably due to a much deeper issue of entropy at stake. The appearance of two power-laws seems to be connected to some non-extensive information-loss / entropy (the experimental systems being mostly athermal) for such systems near their brinks (catastrophic failure not necessarily due to criticality).
General principles for the non-equilibrium relaxation of populations in quantum materials

Abstract:We examine the problem of how excited populations of electrons relax after they have been excited by a pump. We include three of the most important relaxation processes: (i) impurity scattering; (ii) Coulomb scattering; and (iii) electron-phonon scattering. The relaxation of an excited population of electrons is one of the most fundamental processes measured in pump/probe experiments, but its interpretation remains under debate. We show how several common assumptions about non-equilibrium relaxation that are pervasive in the field may not hold under quite general conditions. The analysis shows that non-equilibrium relaxation is more complex than previously thought, but it yields to recently developed theoretical methods in non-equilibrium theory. In this work, we show how one can use many-body theory to properly interpret and analyze these complex systems. We focus much of the discussion on implications of these results for experiment.

Abstract:Thermodynamics is based on the notions of energy and entropy. While energy is the elementary quantity governing physical dynamics, entropy is the fundamental concept in information theory. In this work, starting from first principles, we give a detailed didactic account on the relations between energy and entropy and thus physics and information theory. We show that thermodynamic process inequalities, like the Second Law, are equivalent to the requirement that an effective description for physical dynamics is strongly relaxing. From the perspective of information theory, strongly relaxing dynamics govern the irreversible convergence of a statistical ensemble towards the maximally non-commital probability distribution that is compatible with thermodynamic equilibrium parameters. In particular, Markov processes that converge to a thermodynamic equilibrium state are strongly relaxing. Our framework generalizes previous results to arbitrary open and driven systems, yielding novel thermodynamic bounds for idealized and real processes.

Abstract:This talk is concerned with basic structural properties on hyperbolic relaxation systems. One of the main conclusions is that non-(strongly) hyperbolic conservation laws do not admit linearly stable (in the sense of Lax-Richtmyer) relaxation approximations. Moreover, we point out that the stability of a relaxation system cannot be judged merely by the dissipative-ness of its modified equation resulting from the classical Chapman-Enskog expansion. In addition, a similar non-existence remark is made for hyperbolic initial-boundary-value problems which are not well-posed in the sense of Kreiss.
Relaxation to equilibrium in models of classical spins with long-range interactions

Abstract:For a model long-range interacting system of classical Heisenberg spins, we study how fluctuations, such as those arising from having a finite system size or through interaction with the environment, affect the dynamical process of relaxation to Boltzmann-Gibbs equilibrium. Under deterministic spin precessional dynamics, we unveil the full range of quasistationary behavior observed during relaxation to equilibrium, whereby the system is trapped in nonequilibrium states for times that diverge with the system size. The corresponding stochastic dynamics, modeling interaction with the environment and constructed in the spirit of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, however shows a fast relaxation to equilibrium on a size-independent timescale and no signature of quasistationarity, provided the noise is strong enough. Similar fast relaxation is also seen in Glauber Monte Carlo dynamics of the model, thus establishing the ubiquity of what has been reported earlier in particle dynamics (hence distinct from the spin dynamics considered here) of long-range interacting systems, that quasistationarity observed in deterministic dynamics is washed away by fluctuations induced through contact with the environment.

Abstract:[Shortened Abstract:] This thesis explores the possibility that quantum probabilities arose thermodynamically. A chief concern is the detection of primordial `quantum nonequilibrium', since this is observably distinct from textbook quantum physics. Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5 are adaptations of references [1,2,3], and [4] respectively. Chapter 2 proposes (information) entropy conservation as a minimal requirement for a theory to feature classical-style thermodynamic relaxation. The resulting structure is dubbed `the iRelax framework'. Both classical mechanics and de Broglie-Bohm quantum theory are shown to be special cases. Indications for a possible extension or unification of de Broglie-Bohm theory are briefly highlighted. Chapter 3 examines ways in which quantum relaxation may be prevented. The method of the drift-field is introduced. A systematic treatment of nodes is given. A category of quantum states is found for which relaxation is significantly impeded, and may not complete at all. Chapters 4 and 5 consider the possibility that primordial quantum nonequilibrium may be conserved in the statistics of a species of relic cosmological particle. Necessary factors for this to be the case are discussed and illustrative scenarios are given both in terms of nonequilibrium particles created by inflaton decay, as well as relic vacuum modes for species that decoupled close to the Planck temperature. The search for so-called `smoking-gun' spectral lines created by dark matter decay or annihilation is argued to be a particularly promising setting for the detection of quantum nonequilibrium. Unintuitive spectral effects relating to the contextuality of quantum measurements are described. If such a suspected source of quantum nonequilibrium were found, its subjection to a specifically quantum mechanical test would confirm or deny the presence of the quantum nonequilibrium conclusively.

Abstract:Economists were content with the concept of the Nash equilibrium as game theory's solution concept until Daskalakis, Goldberg, and Papadimitriou showed that finding a Nash equilibrium is most likely a computationally hard problem, a result that set off a deep scientific crisis. Motivated, in part, by their result, in this paper, we propose a general theory of equilibrium behavior in vector fields (and, therefore, also noncooperative games). Our line of discourse is to show that these universal in nature mathematical objects are endowed with significant structure, which we probe to unearth atypical, previously unidentified, equilibrium behavior.

Thermodynamic Equilibrium in Open Chemical Systems

Abstract:The article presents new model of equilibrium in open chemical systems suggesting a linear dependence of the reaction shift from equilibrium in presence of the external thermodynamic force. Basic equation of this model contains traditional logarithmic term and a non-traditional parabolic term. At isolated equilibrium the non-traditional term equals to zero turning the whole equation to the traditional form of constant equation. This term coincides with the excessive thermodynamic function revealing linear relationship between logarithm of the thermodynamic activity coefficient and reaction extent at open equilibrium. Discovered relationship prompts us to use in many systems a combination of the linearity coefficient and reaction shift from true equilibrium rather then activity coefficients. The coefficient of linearity can be found by thermodynamic computer simulation while the shift is an independent variable defining the open equilibrium state. Numerical data obtained by various simulation techniques proved premise of the method of chemical dynamics.

Kinetics of Stress Relaxation in Metals

Abstract:The phenomenon of stress relaxation, the time decrease of internal stress due to localized flow in a solid under constant uniaxial strain, is viewed in terms of present kinetic theories and available data for metals. Rate equations for shear flow, derived from molecular models of liquids and gases, are reviewed briefly. Combined with the theory of elasticity, these equations are shown to be identical to the classical Maxwell model and to the empirical logarithmic form in limiting cases for stress relaxation in solids. Without reference to the specific details of the localized flow, the general equations are found to correlate uniaxial data for many types of steels, copper, aluminum, magnesium, and lead for various temperatures and stress levels. In all of the data, one characteristic controlling reaction is found, and in some cases a secondary reaction dependent upon the level of the uniaxial prestress is also found. For nonaging metals, the data fit equations in which the relaxation stress approaches zero asymptotically in time. A simple modification of the rate equations is made so that an age-hardening metal can approach a nonzero stress during relaxation. Prestress is used as a controlling variable in correlating data for uniaxial stress relaxation. Apparent heats and entropies of activation are calculated for Inconel and copper at elevated temperatures. For nearly all metals, the apparent free energy of activation for the controlling reaction in the relaxation process decreases slightly as the prestress is increased.
Relaxation to statistical equilibrium in stochastic Michaelis-Menten kinetics

Abstract:The equilibration of enzyme and complex concentrations in deterministic Michaelis-Menten reaction networks underlies the hyperbolic dependence between the input (substrates) and output (products). This relationship was first obtained by Michaelis and Menten and then Briggs and Haldane in two asymptotic limits: `fast equilibrium' and `steady state'. In stochastic Michaelis-Menten networks, relevant to catalysis at single-molecule and mesoscopic concentrations, the classical analysis cannot be directly applied due to molecular discreteness and fluctuations. Instead, as we show here, such networks require a more subtle asymptotic analysis based on the decomposition of the network into reversible and irreversible sub-networks and the exact solution of the chemical master equation (CME). The reversible and irreversible sub-networks reach detailed balance and stationarity, respectively, through a relaxation phase that we characterise in detail through several new statistical measures. Since stochastic enzyme kinetics encompasses the single-molecule, mesoscopic and thermodynamic limits, our work provides a broader molecular viewpoint of the classical results, in much the same manner that statistical mechanics provides a broader understanding of thermodynamics.

Structural origin of relaxation in dense colloidal suspensions

Abstract:Amorphous solids relax via slow molecular rearrangement induced by thermal fluctuations or applied stress. Although microscopic structural signatures predicting these structural relaxations have long been sought, a physically motivated structural measure relevant to diverse systems remains elusive. Here, we introduce a structural order parameter derived from the mean-field caging potential experienced by the particles due to their neighbors, which reliably predicts the occurrence of structural relaxations. The parameter, derived from density functional theory, is a measure of susceptibility to particle rearrangements that can effectively identify weak or defect-like regions in disordered systems. Using experiments on dense colloidal suspensions, we demonstrate a causal relationship between this order parameter and the structural relaxations of the amorphous solid. In quiescent suspensions, increasing the density leads to stronger correlations between the structure and dynamics. Under applied shear, the mean structural order parameter increases with increasing strain, signaling shear-induced softening, which is accompanied by the proliferation of plastic events. In both cases, the order parameter reliably identifies weak regions where the plastic rearrangements due to thermal fluctuation or applied shear preferentially occur. Our study paves the way to a structural understanding of the relaxation of a wide range of amorphous solids, from suspensions to metallic glasses.

A Strong Bond Model for Stress Relaxation of Soft Solid Interfaces

Abstract:In this article, we propose a mathematical model which explains the formation of strong bonds during the relaxation process of a soft solid on a hard surface. As a result, the soft solid relaxes to a non zero residual stress level. The model assumes that formation of strong bonds occurs owing to transition from weak to strong bonds at a critical time. Parametric studies are carried out to understand the effect of different friction parameters related with the model on the relaxation process. The relaxation model is, in turn, validated with experiments and corresponding numerical values are justified.

Abstract:From the early days of many-body physics, it was realized that the self-energy governs the relaxation or lifetime of the retarded Green$'$s function. So it seems reasonable to directly extend those results into the nonequilibrium domain. But experiments and calculations of the response of quantum materials to a pump show that the relationship between the relaxation and the self-energy only holds in special cases. Experimentally, the decay time for a population to relax back to equilibrium and the linewidth measured in a linear-response angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy differ by large amounts. Theoretically, aside from the weak-coupling regime where the relationship holds, one also finds deviations and additionally one sees violations of Mathiessen$'$s rule. In this work, we examine whether looking at an effective transport relaxation time helps to analyze the decay times of excited populations as they relax back to equilibrium. We conclude that it may do a little better, but it has a fitting parameter for the overall scale which must be determined.

Abstract:Abstract Since its inception in 1979 the Coupling Model has predictions on the dynamic properties of relaxation and diffusion that should be universal in materials with many-body interactions. The verifications of this bold prediction require the studies of many different relaxation and diffusion processes in diverse kinds of material. These tasks performed over the past four decades have culminated in the overwhelming confirmation of the predictions as reported in the extensive review by the author published in Prog. Mater. Sci., 139, 101130 (2023). A large variety of relaxation and diffusion processes in widely different classes of materials are shown to have the predicted universal properties. In particular for polymers, the local segmental relaxation responsible for glass transition conforms to the universal properties. However, not known is whether diffusion of the entangled chains in high molecular weight polymers also follows the same or not. In this paper, published data of diffusion of entangled polymer chains from experiments and simulations are reexamined and reevaluated to show indeed that they are in conformity with the universal properties. The same conclusion holds also for diffusion and rheology of entangled cyclic polymers. This paper is written as a tribute to C. Michael Roland for his scientific collaborations and camaraderie with the author over many years.

Abstract:This paper presents an observation that under reasonable conditions, many partial differential equations from mathematical physics possess three structural properties. One of them can be understand as a variant of the celebrated Onsager reciprocal relation in Modern Thermodynamics. It displays a direct relation of irreversible processes to the entropy change. We show that the properties imply various entropy dissipation conditions for hyperbolic relaxation problems. As an application of the observation, we propose an approximation method to solve relaxation problems. Moreover, the observation is interpreted physically and verified with eight (sets of) systems from different fields.

Abstract:The established thermodynamic formalism of chaotic dynamics, valid at statistical equilibrium, is here generalized to systems out of equilibrium that have yet to relax to a steady state. A relation between information, escape rate, and the phase-space average of an integrated observable (e.g., Lyapunov exponent, diffusion coefficient) is obtained for finite time. Most notably, the thermodynamic treatment may predict the phase-space profile of any integrated observable for finite time, from the leading and subleading eigenfunctions of the Perron-Frobenius or Koopman transfer operator. Abstract:We introduce a set-valued solution concept, M equilibrium, to capture empirical regularities from over half a century of game-theory experiments. We show M equilibrium serves as a meta theory for various models that hitherto were considered unrelated. M equilibrium is empirically robust and, despite being set-valued, falsifiable. We report results from a series of experiments comparing M equilibrium to leading behavioral-game-theory models and demonstrate its virtues in predicting observed choices and stated beliefs. Data from experimental games with a unique pure-strategy Nash equilibrium and multiple M equilibria exhibit coordination problems that could not be anticipated through the lens of existing models.
