Abstract:Semiconducting oxides with reducible cations are ideal platforms for various functional applications in nanoelectronics and catalysts. Here we report an ultrathin monolayer alpha-MoO3 where tunable electronic properties and different gas adsorbing behaviors upon introducing the oxygen vacancies (VO). The unique property of alpha-MoO3 is that it contains three different types of oxygen atoms occupying three Wyckoff sites that are absent in other low-dimensional oxides and provides rich electronic hybridized states. The presence of VO triggers intermediate state in the gap at ~0.59 eV below the conduction band minimum and reduces the work function dramatically, together with new excitations at near infrared. The realigned Fermi level associated with the dangling state of VO reduces the neighboring Mo atoms and affects the gas adsorption thereafter. The binding energy of H2O molecules above VO is 2.5 times up to -0.75 eV compared with that of perfect lattice site and trends of transfer of electrons also reverse. The latter is related with the shallow localized state in the band gap due to H2O adsorbed above perfect MoO3 which becomes quenched upon adsorbing at the VO site. Those rich in-gap defective states in oxygen deficient MoO3, broadening the light absorption and promoting the uptake of water, are conductive to the application of alpha-MoO3 for optoelectronics, photothermal therapy, and sensor of moisture.

Abstract:Large specific surface area and oxygen defects of metal oxides are the dominant factors to affect performances related to surface adsorption processes, and have been fully considered in the synthesis of materials. Understanding completely the effect of oxygen vacancies on the structure and the interaction with reactants is still under process. Here, for the first time, oxygen deficient two-dimensional (2D) oligo-layer molybdenum trioxide (MoO3-x) nanosheets with large aspect ratio of -670, were fabricated via a convenient microwave-assisted exfoliation method. The effect of oxygen vacancies on the surface adsorption of molecules was comprehensively investigated with experiments and DFT calculations. From the analysis of molecular dynamics and molecular electrostatic potential results, the enlarged interlayer spacings and oxygen vacancies working as the capture centers for negatively charged groups made 2D oligo-layer MoO3-x nanosheets promising for the adsorption for various organic molecules. Especially, a high value of -1290 mg/g rarely reported before was achieved for the adsorption of methylene blue. Benefited from the enlarged adsorption energies to gas molecules and the preferential adsorption of oxygen molecules in ambient atmosphere, p-type gas sensors based on 2D oligo-layer MoO3-x nanosheets were fabricated, which exhibited superior gas sensing performance to ethanol, acetone and hydrogen sulfide at room temperature. This work proposed an effective approach for synthesis of 2D nanomaterials, and underscored the importance of oxygen vacancies into 2D structures for different applications.
Controllable synthesis of defect-enriched MoO 3 for enhanced H 2 S sensing through hydrothermal methods: Experiments and DFT calculations

Abstract:To improve the sensitivity of MoO 3 sensors for hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), two-dimensional MoO 3 nanoflakes with enriched oxygen vacancies were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The relationship between the oxygen vacancies concentration, the hydrothermal method temperature, and the solution concentration (ethanol) was studied. The morphology, structure, and gas-sensing performance of MoO 3 were measured and compared. Through qualitative analysis of lattice movement characterized by XRD, as well as the Mo 5+ and adsorbed oxygen content determined by XPS, it was found that the synthesized material MoO 3−x -13021 had the highest concentration of oxygen vacancies. The synthesized material coded as MoO 3−x -13021 with the highest oxygen vacancy concentration showed enhanced H 2 S-sensing properties compared to defect-free MoO 3 sensors. The response value reached 282.6 at 15 ppm. The optimum operating temperature was 140 °C. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to establish the H 2 S sensitization mechanism model. Adsorption energies, bond lengths, charge transfer, and density of states (DOS) of H 2 S adsorbed on stoichiometric and reduced MoO 3 (010) surfaces were calculated and compared. The increase of oxygen vacancies on reduced MoO 3 leads to the movement of the conduction band, which reduces the band gap of MoO 3 . This promotes the charge transfer between the gas molecules and MoO 3 , enhancing the response.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless and highly toxic gas, developing gas sensor with high sesitivity toward CO gas is critical for controlling combustion processes. In this paper, the characteristics of adsorption of CO, H2O, CH4, H2S, H2 and NH3 gases on Cu-doped MnO3 are investigated by first-principles calculations. The adsorption of CO on Cu-MoO3 shows the highest adsorption energy together with the largest differential charge density, indicating a strong interaction between CO and Cu-MoO3. The strong interaction is also demonstrated by the smallest adsorption distance of 1.526 Å between Cu-MoO3 and CO molecules. Moreover, the DOS of the system with the incorporation of CO moves to the lower energy levels and the DOS near the Fermi energy level increases, which will lead to significant change in conductivity of Cu-MoO3. It can be inferred that Cu-MoO3 show high sensitivity and selectivity toward CO gas.

Abstract:The (100) surface of α-MoO3 should possess overwhelmingly more exposed Mo atoms than the (010), and the exposed Mo has been extensively considered as an active site for amine adsorption. However, α-MoO3 (100) has drawn little attention concerning the amine sensing mechanism. In this research, adsorption of ammonia (NH3), monomethylamine (MMA), dimethylamine (DMA), and trimethylamine (TMA) is systematically investigated by density functional theory (DFT). All four of these molecules have high affinity to α-MoO3 (100) through interaction between the N and the exposed Mo, and the affinity is mainly influenced by both the characteristics of the molecules and the geometric environment of the surface active site. Adsorption and dissociation of water and oxygen molecule on stoichiometric and defective α-MoO3 (100) surfaces are then simulated to fully understand the surface chemistry of α-MoO3 (100) in practical conditions. At low temperature, α-MoO3 (100) must be covered with a large number of water molecules; the water can desorb or dissociate into hydroxyl groups at high temperature. Oxygen vacancy (VO) can be generated through the annealing process during sensor device fabrication; VO must be filled with an O2 molecule, which can further interact with adsorbed water nearby to form hydroxyl groups. According to this research, α-MoO3 (100) must be the active surface for amine sensing and its surface chemistry is well understood. Abstract:MoS2 and related transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have recently been reported to exhibit extensive applications in nanoelectronics and catalysis due to their unique physical and chemical properties. However, one practical challenge for the MoS2-based applications arises from easiness of oxygen contamination which is likely to degrade performance. To this end, understanding states and related energetics of adsorbed oxygen is critical. Herein, we identify various states of oxygen species adsorbed on MoS2 surface with first-principles calculations. We reveal a "dissociative" mechanism through which a physisorbed oxygen molecule trapped at a sulfur vacancy can split into two chemically bound oxygen atoms, namely a top-anchoring oxygen and a substituting oxygen both of which show no adsorbate induced states in bandgap. The electron and hole mass show an asymmetric effect in response of oxygen species with the hole mass being more sensitive to oxygen content due to a strong hybridization of oxygen states in valence band edge of MoS2. Alternation of oxygen content allows modulation of work function up to 0.5 eV, enabling reduced Schottky barriers in MoS2/metal contact. These results show that oxygen doping on MoS2 is a promising method for sulfur vacancy healing, carrier mass controlling, contact resistance reduction, and anchoring of surface electron dopants. Our study suggests that tuning the chemical composition of oxygen is viable for modulating the electronic properties of MoS2 and likely other chalcogen incorporated-TMDs, which offers promise for new optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Oxidation reactions on semiconducting metal oxide (SMOs) surfaces have been extensively worked on in catalysis, fuel cells, and sensors. SMOs engage powerfully in energy-related applications such as batteries, supercapacitors, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), and sensors. A deep understanding of SMO surface and oxygen interactions and defect engineering has become significant because all of the above-mentioned applications are based on the adsorption/absorption and consumption/transportation of adsorbed (physisorbed-chemisorbed) oxygen. More understanding of adsorbed oxygen and oxygen vacancies (VO•,VO••) is needed, as the former is the vital requirement for sensing chemical reactions, while the latter facilitates the replenishment of adsorbed oxygen ions on the surface. We determined the relation between sensor response (sensitivity) and the amounts of adsorbed oxygen ions (O2ads−, Oads, −O2ads2−, Oads2−), water/hydroxide groups (H2O/OH−), oxygen vacancies (VO•, VO••), and ordinary lattice oxygen ions (Olattice2−) as a function of temperature. During hydrogen (H2) testing, the different oxidation states (W6+, W5+, and W4+) of WO3 were quantified and correlated with oxygen vacancy formation (VO•, VO••). We used a combined application of XPS, UPS, XPEEM-LEEM, and chemical, electrical, and sensory analysis for H2 sensing. The sensor response was extraordinarily high: 424 against H2 at a temperature of 250 °C was recorded and explained on the basis of defect engineering, including oxygen vacancies and chemisorbed oxygen ions and surface stoichiometry of WO3. We established a correlation between the H2 sensing mechanism of WO3, sensor signal magnitude, the amount of adsorbed oxygen ions, and sensor testing temperature. This paper also provides a review of the detection, quantification, and identification of different adsorbed oxygen species. The different surface and bulk-sensitive characterization techniques relevant to analyzing the SMOs-based sensor are tabulated, providing the sensor designer with the chemical, physical, and electronic information extracted from each technique.

Abstract:Adsorbed oxygen species on the surface of metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) play an important role in the field of gas-sensing. However, considering the large number of possible MOS, manipulating surface oxygen species by exposing high-energy crystal facets often requires strict experimental conditions and may not be efficiently repeated for nano MOS. This poses a huge challenge to the rational design of advanced gas-sensing materials. This study explores the fabrication of MoO 3 nanoclusters (NCs) film by cluster beam deposition. Helium is co-fed with argon into the aggregation chamber to influence the nucleation and growth of Mo NCs. This unique process facilitated the exposure of the high-energy (0 6 0) crystal facet in MoO 3 during the aging phase. This exposed crystal facet greatly reduces the oxygen adsorption energy barrier and increases the adsorbed oxygen content, resulting in a significant improvement in gas-sensing performance. The study examined the impact of energetic facets on gas sensor sensitivity by using ethanol, ammonia, and toluene as target gases. The results indicate that exposing high-energy crystal facets significantly enhances sensor performance. This approach to creating NCs with high-energy crystal facets has broad potential for advancing MOS nanostructure-based gas sensors.

Abstract:The single-atom decoration has attracted significant research interest by virtue of its critical role in modulating the electronic structure of transition metal dichalcogenides, and has been widely used in the fields of single-atom catalysis. Herein, we investigated the structures, electronic properties, and gas adsorption performance of single-atom (Co, Pd, Pt)-decorated 2H-MoS2 monolayer for adsorption of typical toxic gases, NO2 and NH3, using spin-polarized density functional theory calculations. The results indicate that the decorated metal atoms substantially improved the activity and electronic properties of the MoS2 monolayer, and further enhanced the adsorption and sensing performance for NO2 and NH3. The Pd-MoS2 monolayer is found to be a promising highly efficient gas sensing material for both gases in the temperature range of 400–500 K. On the other hand, the Co-MoS2 and Pt-MoS2 monolayers are not suitable for gas sensing applications, however, they can be considered as gas capture materials. These findings privide valuable references for the design and development of single-atom decorated MoS2 monolayer as high-performing gas sensing or scavenging materials for environmental monitoring and other related applications.

Abstract:Increasing quality of life requires low power consumption and reliable gas sensing technology for real-time monitoring of the environment. Herein, based on the principle of ion compensation and charge compensation, Mn-doped MoO 3 self-assembled nanoflowers were designed and prepared, and their gas-sensing performance were studied. Benefiting from abundant defective sites and surface chemical state changes, the sensor exhibits superior characteristics for triethylamine detection, including ultrahigh response (436.9), short response time (7 s), small detection limit (1 ppm), and remarkable selectivity. The gas-sensitive mechanism of M-MoO 3 was explained from the points of view of charge compensation and ion compensation, and it was proved that the incorporation of Mn into MoO 3 was an effective way to improve its gas sensitivity. This work provides a potential strategy for widespread triethylamine detection and provides new ideas for the design of high-performance sensors.

Abstract:Controllable and efficient construction of oxygen vacancies on the surface of metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) is essential for their application in the gas sensor. Herein, a general H2 reduction method is developed to synthesize SnO2 with oxygen vacancies defect (SnO2-D) by annealing the SnO2 in a H2 atmosphere at different temperature (300 °C, 400 °C and 500 °C), and then named SnO2-D3, SnO2-D4 and SnO2-D5, respectively. It was found that although the determined specific surface areas for pristine SnO2, SnO2-D3, SnO2-D4 and SnO2-D5 are 103.749 m2g−1, 63.316 m2g−1, 47.652 m2g−1 and 15.541 m2g−1, respectively, the gas sensitivity test results indicate that the SnO2-D4 Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) sensor shows improved response and excellent low-concentration detection capability (down to 0.1 ppm) to H2 compared with that fabricated with pristine SnO2, SnO2-D3 and SnO2-D5. The abnormal relationship between specific surface area and gas sensing performance is attributed to the more oxygen vacancies of SnO2-D4 surface. In addition, ZnO (ZnO-D) and In2O3 (In2O3-D) with oxygen vacancy defects based on the H2 reduction method show better gas sensitivity than ZnO and In2O3 sensors, which further proves that oxygen vacancy defects can effectively improve the gas-sensing performance of MOSs.

Dft+U Study of Properties of Moo3 and Hydrogen Adsorption on Moo3(010)

Abstract:MoO3 is an important catalytic material, and there exist controversial viewpoints about its surface structure, oxygen vacancy, and hydrogen adsorption, which are crucial for rationalizing the catalytic properties and reaction mechanism. To clarify these disputes, we adopted the density functional plus U (DFT+U) method to investigate properties of MoO3 bulk and surfaces and examined atomic hydrogen adsorption. Analyses reveal that the vibration peak at 820 cm(-1) previously assigned to the vibration of asymmetrical oxygen is due to the vibration of symmetrical oxygen. On the other hand, the previously unassigned weak peaks at 899 and 723 cm(-1) are caused by the asymmetrical oxygen stretching. Single hydrogen atom adsorbs favorably at asymmetric oxygen, while the terminal oxygen becomes the favorable position for accommodating two hydrogen atoms. The H atoms occupy preferentially asymmetrical oxygen at low coverage, whereas at high coverage they favorably reside on the terminal one. Our calculations indicate that different from the previous viewpoint, water binds to the terminal oxygen defective site relatively strongly. Furthermore, the controversial viewpoints about the stability ordering of oxygen vacancy under oxidation and reduction conditions is discussed on the basis of the formation energy of oxygen vacancy and water desorption energy on defect sites.
The role of oxygen vacancies on SnO2 in improving formaldehyde competitive adsorption: A DFT study with an experimental verification

Abstract:The synthesis of metal oxides enriched with oxygen vacancies is beneficial for improving the gas-sensing properties of metal-oxide-based chemoresistive sensors. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the mechanism of adsorption of formaldehyde and acetone vapors on oxygen-vacancy-enriched SnO2. The ambient humidity and oxygen pressure were also considered in the calculations. The results indicated that oxygen vacancies play an important role in formaldehyde adsorption. The adsorption energy of formaldehyde on the reduced (1 1 0) surface was four times higher than that on the stoichiometric (1 1 0) surface, which was in turn, much higher than that of acetone. The presence of water molecules weakened the affinity of the adsorbed species for the SnO2 surface; however, the inhibition capacity varied. The formaldehyde molecules combined with the oxygen atom in the hydroxyl group to form dioxymethylene during adsorption, which mitigates the weakening effect. Oxygen-vacancy-enriched SnO2 was prepared to verify the validity of the DFT calculations.

Abstract:Surface oxygen vacancy defects (OV) are regarded to be beneficial to the gas sensing behavior by significantly improving the carrier density and providing more oxygen adsorption sites. In this work, Ce-doped α-Fe2O3 composites with abundant OV defects were synthesized using an oil bath method assisted with annealing treatment. Morphological characterization results indicate that the lamellar architecture of α-Fe2O3 is transformed to nanospheres composed of massive nanoparticles with small sizes (7–9 nm) after introducing Ce elements. Gas sensing results show that the FeCe10 (Fe/Ce = 10:1) sensors exhibit enhanced acetone sensing response of 26.3–100 ppm gas at the operating temperature of 220 °C toward that of pure α-Fe2O3. Most importantly, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron spin resonance spectroscopy results confirm that the sensing responses of Ce-doped α-Fe2O3 sensors are directly related to the OV defects, that is, the larger the quantity of the OV defects, the higher the sensing response. The unpaired electrons trapped in OV defects can provide more active sites for adsorption of oxygen and acetone molecules, resulting in a thicker depletion layer and a higher potential barrier. Our work highlights the decisive role of OV defects in gas sensors, which can also provide a rational approach to boost the sensing performance.
Density Functional Theory Study of P-Doped Co 3 O 4 (111) Facets for HCHO Adsorption: Implications for Metal Oxide Semiconductor Gas Sensors

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pose a significant threat to human health, and it is essential to develop advanced VOC gas sensors by understanding the mechanisms. Metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors have the advantages of high sensitivity, high-temperature resistance, stability, and safety. The rational design of crystal facets and doping components can improve the sensing properties. However, the time-consuming experimental optimization of the sensor design has tremendously inhibited the development of the new sensing material. Nevertheless, density functional theory (DFT) calculations shined a light on the fundamental understanding of the sensing mechanism at the molecular level and accelerated the sensor design process. In this study, we used DFT calculations to investigate the sensing properties of the P-doped Co3O4(111) surface toward methanol, methane, formic acid, water, and formaldehyde. Results showed that P doping changed the surface electronic distribution, increased the charge transfer of HCHO, and enhanced the adsorption energy of other molecules. The significant difference in adsorption energy between H2O and HCHO indicates that the P-doped surface exhibits certain antihumidity properties in HCHO sensing. Our work broadens the application of P-doped Co3O4(111) in the VOC gas-sensing field and provides a theoretical basis for designing metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors.

Abstract:In this work, the adsorption and sensing behavior of Ag-doped MoSe2/ZnO heterojunctions for H2, CH4, CO2, NO, CO, and C2H4 have been studied based on density functional theory (DFT). In gas adsorption analysis, the adsorption energy, adsorption distance, transfer charge, total electron density, density of states (DOS), energy band structure, frontier molecular orbital, and work function (WF) of each gas has been calculated. Furthermore, the reusability and stability of the Ag-doped MoSe2/ZnO heterojunctions have also been studied. The results showed that Ag-doped MoSe2/ZnO heterojunctions have great potential to be a candidate of highly selective and responsive gas sensors for NO detection with excellent reusability and stability.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculation was used to study the adsorption and sensing performances of a transition metal atom (TMA) doped MoTe2 monolayer for two industrial toxic and harmful gases, SO2 and NH3, in this study. The adsorption structure, molecular orbital, density of state, charge transfer, and energy band structure were applied to investigate the interaction between the gas and MoTe2 monolayer substrate. The conductivity of the MoTe2 monolayer film doped with TMA (Ni, Pt, Pd) is significantly improved. The original MoTe2 monolayer has poor adsorptive ability for SO2 and NH3, which is physisorption, while for the TMA-doped MoTe2 monolayer, it is significantly enhanced and the adsorption process is chemisorption. All results provide a trustworthy theoretical basis for sensors based on MoTe2 to detect toxic and harmful gases SO2 and NH3. Additionally, it also provides guidance for further research on the transition metal cluster doped MoTe2 monolayer for gas detection.

Abstract:MnO octahedrons with exposed {111} crystal faces have been synthesized in a solvothermal system of Mn(Ac)2 and C2H5OH at 200 oC for 48 h. Formation of the MnO octahedron results from the selective adsorption of -OCH2CH3 and -OH groups on the (111) crystal plane. Responses of the MnO octahedrons towards acetone, triethylamine, ethanol and n-Butylamine are enhanced by increasing numbers of the unsaturated 2, 3 and 5-coordinated Mn atoms on the (111) surface by removing surface C2H5O- and -OH groups through hydrogenation. Thus, the exposed Mn-MnO (111) face is found to be a gas sensing active surface, the unsaturated 2, 3 and 5-coordinated Mn atoms on the (111) surface are evidenced to be the sensing reactive atoms and a detailed sensing mechanism is presented. The unsaturated active Mn atoms produce electrons, adsorb oxygen and catalyze the sensing reactions. The mechanism can deepen the understanding of the nature of oxide semiconductor gas sensing and is helpful to the design of high performance gas sensing materials.

Oxygen Vacancy-Induced Novel Low-Temperature Water Splitting Reactions on FeO(111) Monolayer-Thick Film

Abstract:We have used XPS, UPS, and TDS to comparatively study water chemisorption and reaction on stoichiometric FeO(111) monolayer-thick film on Pt(111), stoichiometric FeO(111) monolayer-thick islands on Pt(111), and FeO(111) monolayer-thick films with oxygen vacancies on Pt(111) at 110 K. On stoichiometric FeO(111) monolayer-thick film, water undergoes reversible molecular adsorption. On stoichiometric FeO(111) monolayer-thick islands on Pt(111), water dissociates at coordination-unsaturated Fe(11) sites of the FeO(111)-Pt(111) interface to form OH following H2O + Fe-cus + FeO -> Fe-cus OwH + FeOH in which O-W means from H2O. Upon heating, H-2 evolution occurs above 500 K. On FeO(111) monolayer-thick films with oxygen vacancies, water dissociates and molecularly chemisorbs to form a mixed adsorbate layer of H(a), OH, and H2O(a) following both H2O + Fe-O-vacancy + FeO -> FeOWH + FeOH and H2O + 2 Fe-O-vacancy -> FeOwH + H(a)-Fe-O-vacancy Upon heating, besides the high-temperature H-2 evolution, additional H-2 desorption peaks appear simultaneously with the lowtemperature desorption features of adsorbed H2O(a), revealing novel low-temperature water splitting reactions. The formation of hydrated-proton surface species within a mixed adsorbate layer of H(a), OH, and H2O(a) on FeO(111) monolayer-thick films with oxygen vacancies is proposed to explain such novel low-temperature water splitting reactions. These results greatly enrich the surface chemistry of water on solid surfaces.
