Abstract:Developing polymers with switchable glass transition temperature (Tg) can solve scientific challenges such as fracture healing of polymers with high Tg and processing of hard polymers without plasticizer at room temperature. The azobenzene-containing polymers, or the so-called azopolymers, are smart materials that show photoswitchable Tg and photoinduced motions, which can be used in fabrication of photoactuators. Here, healable and reprocessable models were constructed by using linear azopolymers. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was used to study the behaviors of photo-induced bending, self-healing, and directional photofluidization of the azopolymers. A temporary modification of the C–N=N–C dihedral potential was applied to achieve the isomerization of azopolymer by using polymer consistent force-field (PCFF). The simulation results show that isomerization of azobenzene groups can lead to photoswitchable Tg of the azopolymers, which resulting in shape changes and different mechanical responses. Furthermore, the photoswitchable Tg makes the azopolymers much easier to heal under UV irradiation, and restore the mechanical properties under visible light irradiation. Finally, the mechanism of photoliquefaction was investigated, our results imply that the photoinduced trans–cis-trans cycles can reduce the mechanical properties and Tg values of azopolymers.

Abstract:Photomechanical dynamic molecular crystals provide a platform for the transition from photo energy to mechanical motions. However, the development of modulating multiple photomechanical modes through crystal size tuning is in the preliminary stage. In this study, the shape-dependent photomechanical motions of molecular crystals based on a cyclohexyl-substituted cyanostilbene derivative (CSHe) are investigated. A series of crystals with different shapes, including ribbon, needle, and plate, are prepared from the same molecule by modulating the crystal culture conditions. These crystals exhibit excellent photo-induced mechanical behaviors caused by the efficient lattice deformation from [2 + 2] cycloaddition photoreaction in the crystal. With the variety of crystal size and shape of crystals, the crystal photomechanical motions are dominantly varied from the twisting of the ribbon to the disintegration of bulk crystals. Our work broadens the insight for developing the photoresponsive modes of dynamic stilbene molecular crystals.

Abstract:As for molecular materials, packing motif plays a pivotal role in determining the optoelectronic characteristics, which can be tailored by not only molecular structures but also crystal polymorphs. However, it remains a long-standing issue for one molecular material to achieve both herringbone packing and 1D slipped stacking, shielding the relationship between the two classic motifs and functional properties. Herein, we demonstrate that t pyridyl substitution at 2,6-positions of anthracene opens up the possibility of the crystal polymorph from herringbone packing to 1D slipped stacking motif. The two crystal polymorphs result into distinct crystal morphologies, emission spectra, optical anisotropy and waveguiding properties, shedding light on the relationship between packing arrangements and optical characteristics based on the same molecular structures.

Abstract:Photomechanical molecular crystals, actuated by solid-state photochemical reactions, manifest a spectrum of mechanical motions upon light exposure, underscoring their prospective integration into the next generation of intelligent materials and devices. Utilizing the solid-state photodimerization of naphthyl acrylic acid as a paradigm, this study delved into the interplay between crystal morphology and reaction dynamics on the photomechanical responses of molecular crystals. Distinct crystal forms—bulk, microrods, and microplates—were cultivated through tailored crystallization conditions. While bulk crystals of naphthyl acrylic acid (NA) underwent shattering and splintering upon UV light exposure, the microplate counterparts displayed unique cracking patterns with fissures yet retained their overall structural integrity. In contrast, NA microrods underwent pronounced bending under identical irradiation conditions. These phenomena are attributed to the efficient lattice reconfiguration stemming from the [2 + 2] cycloaddition photochemical reaction within the crystals. An intermediate fluorescence enhancement was observed across all crystal types upon light exposure. Collectively, our results underscore the pivotal role of crystal shape in dictating photomechanical behavior, thereby heralding novel strategies for developing advanced photomechanical materials.

Abstract:Molecular architectures containing photosensitive units respond to light, giving dramatic variations of their structure. In particular, the crystalline packing phases offer the possibility of significant advances in crystal design and the understanding of solid-state photoreactivity. In this review we mainly focus on three different photoreactivity patterns, namely the isomerization of azobenzene, open-ring <-> closed-ring transformations of diarylethenes and cycloadditions of olefin pairs, as well as some examples of photoreactive crystals outside these types. Many interesting phototriggered functionalities are documented herein, such as photo-tuning of guest adsorption of azobenzene or diarylethene-based porous frameworks and crystalline organic polymers generated by photo-cycloaddition reactions taking place in the different networks. Abstract:Polymorph discrimination for a molecular crystal has long been a challenging task, which, nonetheless, is a major concern in the pharmaceutical industry. In this work, we have investigated polymorph discrimination on three different molecular crystals, tetrolic acid, oxalic acid, and oxalyl dihydrazide, covering both packing polymorphism and conformational polymorphism. To gain more understanding, we have performed energy decomposition analysis based on many-body expansion, and have compared the results from the XO-PBC method, that is, the eXtended ONIOM method (XO) with the periodic boundary condition (PBC), with those from some commonly used dispersion corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) methods. It is shown here that, with the XYG3 doubly hybrid functional chosen as the target high level to capture the intra- and short-range intermolecular interactions, and the periodic PBE as the basic low level to take long range interactions into account, the XO-PBC(XYG3:PBE) method not only obtains the correct experimental stability orderings, but also predicts reasonable polymorph energy ranges for all three cases. Our results have demonstrated the usefulness of the present theoretical methods, in particular XO-PBC, while highlighted the importance of a better treatment of different kinds of interactions to be beneficial to polymorph control.

Abstract:Structurally ordered soft materials that respond to complementary stimuli are susceptible to control over their spatial and temporal morphostructural configurations via intersectional or combined effects such as gating, feedback, shape-memory, or programming. In absence of general and robust design and prediction strategies for their mechanical properties, at present, combined chemical and crystal engineering approaches could provide useful guidelines to identify effectors that determine both the magnitude and time of their response. Here, we capitalize on the purported ability of soft intermolecular interactions to instigate mechanical compliance by using halogenation to elicit both mechanical and photochemical activity of organic crystals. Starting from (E)-1,4-diphenylbut-2-ene-1,4-dione, whose crystals are brittle and photoinert, we use double and quadruple halogenation to introduce halogen-bonded planes that become interfaces for molecular gliding, rendering the material mechanically and photochemically plastic. Fluorination diversifies the mechanical effects further, and crystals of the tetrafluoro derivative are also elastic but also motile, displaying the rare photosalient effect.

Abstract:Molecular motions are essential natures of matter and play important roles in their structures and properties. However, owing to the diversity and complexity of structures and behaviors, the study of motion–structure–property relationships remains a challenge, especially at all levels of structural hierarchy from molecules to macro-objects. Herein, luminogens showing aggregation-induced emission (AIE), namely, 9-(pyrimidin-2-yl)-carbazole (PyCz) and 9-(5-R-pyrimidin-2-yl)-carbazole [R = Cl (ClPyCz), Br (BrPyCz), and CN (CyPyCz)], were designed and synthesized, to decipher the dependence of materials' structures and properties on molecular motions at the molecule and aggregate levels. Experimental and theoretical analysis demonstrated that the active intramolecular motions in the excited state of all molecules at the single-molecule level endowed them with more twisted structural conformations and weak emission. However, owing to the restriction of intramolecular motions in the nano/macroaggregate state, all the molecules assumed less twisted conformations with bright emission. Unexpectedly, intermolecular motions could be activated in the macrocrystals of ClPyCz, BrPyCz, and CyPyCz through the introduction of external perturbations, and synergic strong and weak intermolecular interactions allowed their crystals to undergo reversible deformation, which effectively solved the problem of the brittleness of organic crystals, while endowing them with excellent elastic performance. Abstract:The melting of semicrystalline polymers is a typical multistep process and involves a series of intermediate melt states. However, the structural characteristics of the intermediate polymer melt is unclear. Herein, we choose polymorphic trans-1,4-polyisoprene (tPI) as a model polymer system and elucidate the structures of the intermediate polymer melt and their strong effects on the following crystallization process. We find that the metastable β crystals of the tPI melt first into an intermediate state and then recrystallize in new crystals upon thermal annealing. The intermediate melt shows multilevel structural order at the chain level depending on the melting temperature. The conformationally ordered melt can memorize the initial crystal polymorph and accelerate the crystallization process, while the ordered melt without the conformational order can only enhance the crystallization rate. This work provides deep insight into the multilevel structural order of polymer melts and its strong memory effects on the crystallization process.

Abstract:This article explores photo-deformation of polydomain liquid crystal polymers. Photo-isomerization-driven stimuli differ from thermal ones in mechanical response in that domains deform in differing amounts according to their relative alignment with respect to light polarization, by contracting along their liquid crystal orientation by an amount maximized at parallel alignment, and therefore polydomains' response to light is complicated. Theoretical analysis of polydomain deformation with random domain alignments can be greatly simplified by applying homogenization method to obtain effective overall deformation. Not only is polydomain photo deformation very different from monodomain, but domain distributions enable very different photo responses. Anticlastic, syn-clastic and cylindrical-shell bending modes will be predicted, dictated by order parameter and material thickness. This work serves as a guide to theoretical analysis of composite materials with microstructure and to controlling their morphing shapes experimentally.

Abstract:Shape programming polymer materials from planar sheets to three-dimensional (3D) geometries is appealing in many advanced devices. Different design strategies provide guidance for optimized materials selection and potential applications development. Herein, we report a simple yet effective approach that allows programable shape morphing in commercialized semicrystalline polymer by photothermal driven polymorph pattern. Two regions with different polymorphs show greatly distinct melting temperatures (Tm), moduli, and shape recovery abilities at a specified temperature. The resulting 3D geometries can be controlled by the applied strain and the spatial distribution of polymorphs. Due to the remarkable moduli difference, 2D sheets with well-designed polymorph patterns can transform into concave-convex structures used for “mortise-tenon” joints, which can be assembled into load-bearing devices. The materials with polymorph patterns are reprogrammable, due to the reversible nature of melting/crystallization process. Our strategy can be generalized to other semicrystalline polymers with polymorphism and can also expand unconstrained shape programming of morphing materials.

Abstract:Polymorphism, the ability of the same substance to crystallize in more than one crystal structure, is a common phenomenon in organic crystals, influencing the physicochemical properties of solid materials in many important fields (foods, dyes and pigments, high energic materials, pharmaceuticals, etc.). The utilization of various polymorph discovery methods could increase the possibility of finding polymorphs with desired properties, achieving an optimal performance of the final product. Recently, there has been a steady development of polymorph discovery in both experimental and computational methods. To better guide the polymorph discovery, this paper reviews the recent advances in the polymorph screening methods of organic crystals, mainly including solution crystallization, melt crystallization, and crystal structure prediction. This paper also summarizes the nucleation theory in polymorphic systems to understand the formation of polymorphs and highlights the mechanisms of polymorph discovery by the kinds of methods. Finally, challenges of polymorph discovery are briefly discussed, aimed to shorten the screening time and make the polymorph discovery more effective.

Abstract:The prepared fluorescent organic crystal can emit different fluorescence colors in situ under light irradiation without damaging the crystalline structure or changing the chemical structure of the compound, only by changing the molecular conformation and packing. Increased light intensity can transform the organic crystals into an amorphous state due to photothermal effect, showing photoinduced deformation. A new organic molecule is found to be able to form different fluorescent aggregation states in both single crystals and powders. When irradiated with ultraviolet light, single crystals and powders exhibit an in situ change in the fluorescence color from blue to green and then to chartreuse without changing the chemical groups. This stems from photoinduced changes in the molecular conformation and packing in the solid state. Two or three fluorescence colors can be displayed simultaneously in a single organic crystal by controlling the irradiation time. Under irradiation with intense ultraviolet light, deformations, movements and in situ welding of crystals can be achieved by utilizing the photothermal effect. This work demonstrates a new strategy for inducing different behaviors of organic solid state with stimulation by single‐wavelength light.

Abstract:Exploiting the interplay of anisotropic diamagnetic susceptibility of liquid crystalline monomers and site selective photopolymerization enables the fabrication of 3D freeforms with highly refined mi- crostructures. Utilizing chain transfer agents in the mesogenic inks presents a pathway for broadly tuning the mechanical properties of liquid crystalline polymers and their response to stimuli. In par- ticular, the combination of 1,4-benzenedimethanethiol and tetrabromomethane is shown to enable voxelated blueprinting of molecular order, while allowing for a modulation of the crosslink density and the mechanical properties. The formulation of these monomers allows for the resolution of the voxels to approach the limits set by the coherence lengths defined by the anchoring from surfaces. These compositions demonstrate the expected thermotropic responses while allowing for their func- tionalization with photochromic switches to elicit photomechanical responses. Actuation strains are shown to outstrip that accomplished with prior systems that did not access chain transfer agents to modulate the structure of the macromolecular network. Test cases of this system are shown to create freeform actuators that exploit the refined director patterns during high-resolution printing. These include topological defects, hierarchically-structured light responsive grippers, and biomimetic passive flyers whose flight dynamics can be actively modulated via irradiation with light.
