Abstract:Aromatization-driven deconstruction and functionalization of spiro dihydroquinazolinones via dual photoredox/nickel catalysis is developed. The aromatization effect was introduced to synergistically drive unstrained cyclic C-C bond cleavage, with the aim of overcoming the ring-size limitation of nitrogen-centered radical induced deconstruction of carbocycles. Herein, we demonstrate the synergistic photoredox/nickel catalyzed deconstructive cross-coupling of spiro dihydroquinazolinones with organic halides. Remarkably, structurally diverse organic halides including aryl, alkenyl, alkynyl, and alkyl bromides were compatible for the coupling. In addition, this protocol is also characterized by its mild and redox-neutral conditions, excellent functional group compatibility, high atom economy, and easy scalability. A telescoped procedure involving condensation and ring-opening/coupling was found to be accessible. This work provides a complementary strategy to the existing radical-mediated C-C bond cleavage of unstrained carbocycles.

Abstract:The enantioselective construction of five-membered spirocyclic oxindoles via a double Michael cascade reaction is described by using dipeptide-based multifunctional quaternary phosphonium salt catalysts. The desired products were obtained in excellent yields (up to 94%) and good to high stereo-selectivities (up to >19:1 dr and 99% ee).

Abstract:New dipyridylpyrrole N-oxide ligands HL1 and HL2 are designed and synthesized via oxidation of 2-(5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine (Hdpp) by using 3-chloroperbenzoic acid (m-CPBA) in CH2Cl2. The treatment of ZnEt2 with two equiv. of HL1 and HL2 affords [Zn(L1)2] and [Zn(L2)2] in medium yield, respectively. These ligands and zinc complexes are fully characterized by NMR, IR, UV-vis and ESI-MS spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The structure of HL1 and HL2 shows a planar geometry. The intramolecular hydrogen-bond interactions between the imino hydrogen and N-oxide oxygen atom are observed. In [Zn(L1)2] and [Zn(L2)2], two ligands chelate to the zinc metal with a cross perpendicular geometry. The zinc complexes were employed as a highly efficient catalyst for the thiol-Michael addition of thiols to α,β-unsaturated ketones in EtOH at room temperature. The loading of the catalyst is lowered to 0.01 mol%. The catalytic mechanism was proposed based on NMR and ESI-MS experiments.

Abstract:An enantioselective [5 + 1] annulation of α-hydroxyl aryl ketones with cyclohexadienone-tethered enones via chiral dinuclear zinc catalysts is reported. A Brønsted base and Lewis acid cooperative activation model is the critical factor for the chirality transfer process, giving access to a wide array of enantioenriched bicyclic pyrans scaffolds bearing two oxa-quaternary carbon centers with good yields and high optical purities. Notably, this reaction offers a new reaction mode of α-hydroxyl ketones as C,C-bisnucleophiles in catalytic asymmetric transformation.

Abstract:The search for versatile heterogeneous catalysts with multiple active sites for broad asymmetric transformations has long been of great interest, but it remains a formidable synthetic challenge. Here we demonstrate that multivariate metal-organic frameworks (MTV-MOFs) can be used as an excellent platform to engineer heterogeneous catalysts featuring multiple and cooperative active sites. An isostructural series of 2-fold interpenetrated MTV-MOFs that contain up to three different chiral metallosalen catalysts was constructed and used as efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for a variety of asymmetric sequential alkene epoxidation/epoxide ring-opening reactions. Interpenetration of the frameworks brings metallosalen units adjacent to each other, allowing cooperative activation, which results in improved efficiency and enantioselectivity over the sum of the individual parts. The fact that manipulation of molecular catalysts in MTV-MOFs can control the activities and selectivities would facilitate the design of novel multifunctional materials for enantioselective processes.
Highly Stable Polyoxovanadate-Based Zn–MOF with Dual Active Sites as a Solvent-free Catalyst for C–C Bond Formation

Abstract:A polyoxovanadate-based zinc–organic framework, [Zn(bix)]{V2O6}(V-Zn-MOF, bix = 1,4-bis(imidazole-1-ylmethyl)benzene), was successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray analysis reveals that the V-Zn-MOF contains {V2O6}n2n– polyanion chains and [Zn(bix)]2+ cation frameworks with open zinc metal sites, which endows V-Zn-MOF-rich Lewis base and acid sites. Considering that Lewis acid and base can usually be utilized as active centers for catalytic reactions, we explore the catalytic activity of the V-Zn-MOF for Knoevenagel condensation and cyanosilylation of aromatic aldehydes. The experimental results indicate that the V-Zn-MOF can efficiently and selectively catalyze both reactions of the Knoevenagel condensation and cyanosilylation of aromatic aldehydes under solvent-free conditions, which is attributed to the two-site synergetic effect: (1) the open zinc site as a Lewis acid catalyst can electrophilically activate the carbonyl group of aldehydes; (2) the {V2O6}n2n– polyanion as a Lewis base catalyst can activate methylene or cyanating reagents through the nucleophilic reaction. In addition, the connection mode of {V2O5}–O–Zn closes the molecular size distance between the two activated substrates, thereby improving efficiency of the catalytic reaction. More importantly, the V-Zn-MOF exhibits excellent sustainability, no obvious decrease in the catalytic activity is observed in both catalytic reactions after 10 cycles. Abstract:The selective oxidation of C–H bonds of benzylic compounds to synthesize high-value-added ketones remains a challenge under mild conditions, and the ambiguity of its oxidation mechanism limits the further development of this field. In this work, we construct a polyoxometalate-based metal–organic framework (POMOF), [Cu I 2 Cu II (bix) 2 ]{V 4 O 12 } ( 1 , bix = 1,4-bis(imidazole-1-ylmethyl)benzene), successfully achieving the efficient oxidation catalysis of various benzylic compounds with outstanding conversion, selectivity and durability under mild conditions. Our experimental studies suggest that the highly catalytic activity of 1 derives from its attractive structure with multiple active sites, which consists of V V centers in a unique U-type {V 4 O 12 } 4− ({V 4 }) cluster and Cu I and Cu II centers bridged to the {V 4 } cluster. Importantly, further theoretical calculations indicate that there exists synergistic catalysis between Cu I /{V 4 } sites and Cu II /{V 4 } sites for 1 as catalyst in the oxidation of benzylic compounds, where the {V 4 } cluster mainly provides deprotonation and oxidation sites, and the Cu I site plays a role in the reduction of the oxidant, while the Cu II site plays a role in the adsorption of the oxidant. This is the first POMOF whose catalytic mechanism towards the oxidation of benzylic C–H bonds is deeply studied through the combination of experiments and theoretical calculations, providing a new perspective for the design of related catalysts.

Abstract:Crystal engineering of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has allowed the construction of complex structures at atomic precision, but has yet to reach the same level of sophistication as organic synthesis. The synthesis of complex MOFs with multiple organic and/or inorganic components is ultimately limited by the lack of control over framework assembly in one-pot reactions. Herein, we demonstrate that multi-component MOFs with unprecedented complexity can be constructed in a predictable and stepwise manner under simple kinetic guidance, which conceptually mimics the retrosynthetic approach utilized to construct complicated organic molecules. Four multi-component MOFs were synthesized by the subsequent incorporation of organic linkers and inorganic clusters into the cavity of a mesoporous MOF, each composed of up to three different metals and two different linkers. Furthermore, we demonstrated the utility of such a retrosynthetic design through the construction of a cooperative bimetallic catalytic system with two collaborative metal sites for three-component Strecker reactions.

Abstract:A novel synergistically catalyzed thia-aza-Prins cyclization of alkenylamines with disulfides is reported, rendering the first synthesis of sulfenylated 1,3-oxazinanes and oxazolidines in good to high yields. Importantly, DMSO serves simultaneously as a reaction medium and a surrogate for formaldehyde. Mechanistic studies provide evidence that actions of CuBr2 and in situ formed sulfinic acids as a Lewis acid and Brønsted acid catalyst, respectively, synergistically catalyze these cyclization processes.
A Bifunctional Molecular Catalyst Builtup of L-Proline Grafted Polyoxometalate for One-pot Three-component Green Synthesis of Heterocycles

Abstract:Both polyoxometalates(POMs) and organic small molecular catalyts have excellent performance in chemical synthesis. The incorporation of nanoscale POMs and organocatalysts allows the full expression of their respective merits and enables elusive reactions to be achieved in one catalytic system. However, the covalent combination of such two components has been rarely explored. Here, we have successfully designed and synthesized a bifunctional nanomolecular catalyst L-Pro-Mn-Anderson by grafting an L-proline to Mn-Anderson POM for the first time, and catalytic experiments show that L-Pro-Mn-Anderson can realize the one-pot alcohol oxidation/three-component reaction to synthesize two types of heterocyclic compounds (5-aryl-pyrimido[4,5-b]quinoline-done derivatives and pyrazolo [3,4-b] pyridine derivatives) in high yields up to 97%. The detailed characterizations of the catalyst and the catalytic mechanism have shown that L-Pro-Mn-Anderson exhibits synergistic effects which combines both the organic and inorganic catalytic functions, and the covalent linkage improves the overall redox activity of the molecular catalyst. This study opens up a new way for the design and application of covalently combined organic-inorganic molecular catalysts toward de novo organic synthesis.

Cycloalkanes oxidation with O 2 in high-efficiency and high-selectivity catalyzed by 3D MOFs with limiting domain and Zn(AcO) 2 through synergistic mode

Abstract:To achieve efficient and selective cycloalkane oxidation, binary catalytic systems had been constructed on the basis of 3D MOFs [Zr 6 O 4 ( μ 3 -OH) 4 (Metalloporphyrin) 2 ( μ 1 -OH) 4 ( μ 1 -H 2 O) 4 ] and Zn(AcO) 2 . MOFs were prepared to construct limiting domains to suppress diffusiveness of free radicals under disorder state, and Zn(AcO) 2 had been employed as synergistic catalysis sites. Catalytic system constructed by PCN-222-d(Co) and Zn(AcO) 2 exhibited excellent catalytic performance. In contrast to T(4-COOCH 3 )PPCo as homogeneous catalyst, an enhancement from 3.83% to 5.51% was obtained from conversion, meanwhile selectivity was increased from 79.9% to 94.4% in cyclohexane oxidation. Primary source of the excellent performance were inhibition of diffusiveness of free radicals under disorder state, and enhancement on C-H bonds oxidation with oxidation intermediate R-OOH catalyzed by Zn(II). Synergistic catalysis process and catalytic mechanism were investigated via controlled experiments, radical trapping, and EPR analyses. This study provides a useful reference for oxidative functionalization of cycloalkanes with O 2 , and a significant contribution for other chemical conversions involving in free radicals.

Abstract:Synergistic catalysis is an efficient and powerful strategy for simultaneously activating reactants by multiple active sites to promote the efficiency of difficult and challenging catalytic reactions. Meanwhile, enzymes with multi-active-site synergistic catalytic properties possessing high efficiency and high selectivity have become the goal pursued in the field of catalytic chemistry in recent years. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as an effective heterogeneous catalytic platform, that can integrate multiple active sites for synergistic catalysis like enzymatic systems have recently attracted interest. Herein, we report a doubly interpenetrated metal-organic framework with dual active sites, MnIII-porphyrin sites to directly activate molecular oxygen and fluoren-9-one sites to produce a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) agent by the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process to simultaneously activate inert C(sp3)-H bonds for efficient inert C(sp3)-H bond oxidation under mild conditions. The bifunctional mixed-component MOF structure forced the two catalytic sites closer together to a more suitable distance, exhibiting high photocatalytic activity for inert C(sp3)-H bond oxidation with almost unique selectivity under mild conditions. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation of free energy during the whole catalytic process demonstrated that it is likely that the synergistic catalytic process occurred in the interframework to accelerate the catalytic reaction. The assembling mixed-component MOF for synergistic catalysis would be a prospective approach for the inert C(sp3)-H photoactivation and functionalization.

Abstract:Based on an efficient method for in situ generation of N-o-QM species in the presence of a base, enantioselective catalytic conjugated additions of tritylthiol to in situ generated N-o-QMs are reported. Acid-base bifunctional organocatalyst 4c (10 mol%) enables these transformations with high stereoselectivities (up to 94% ee) using H2O/DCM as a solvent under mild conditions.

Abstract:An unprecedented three-dimensional supramolecular MOF, namely [Zn3(bpy)3 (SO4)4]·(Me2NH2)2·DMF·9H2O (1, where bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, DMF = N,N′-dimethylformamide), has been efficaciously synthesized under the solvothermal reaction. A single-crystal structure determination showed that the wavelike [Zn3(bpy)(SO4)4] layers are pillared by pairs of bpy ligands to give a new 4,6-connected binodal self-penetrated network with overall (4264)(42687382) topology. 1 also has been fully identified characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, gas adsorption properties and so on. In addition, a new Cu(II)-MOF (cat1) was further prepared by postsynthetic exchange (PSE) synthetic approach based on compound 1, which is proved to be an active catalyst for the Friedel–Crafts reaction of indole with β-nitrostyrenes. The result from this work provides a new attempt to describe the crystallization of inorganic sulfate anion link to the organic functional group, and the functionalization-induced MOF gain insights for designing new functional MOF.

Abstract:The structure engineering of metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) forms the cornerstone of their applications. Nonetheless, realizing the simultaneous versatile structure engineering of MOFs remains a significant challenge. Herein, we propose a dynamically mediated synthesis strategy to simultaneously engineer the crystal structure, defect structure, and nanostructure of MOFs. These include amorphous Zr‐ODB nanoparticles, crystalline Zr‐ODB‐hz (ODB = 4,4′‐oxalyldibenzoate, hz = hydrazine) nanosheets, and defective d‐Zr‐ODB‐hz nanosheets. Aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC‐STEM) combined with low‐dose high‐angle annular dark‐field (HAADF) imaging technique vividly portrays these engineered structures. Concurrently, the introduced hydrazine moieties confer self‐reduction properties to the respective MOF structures, allowing the in‐situ installation of catalytic Pd nanoparticles. Remarkably, in the hydrogenation of vanillin‐like biomass‐derivatives, Pd/Zr‐ODB‐hz yields partially hydrogenated alcohols as the primary products, whereas Pd/d‐Zr‐ODB‐hz exclusively produces fully hydrogenated alkanes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, coupled with experimental evidence, uncover the catalytic selectivity switch triggered by the change in structure type. The proposed strategy of versatile structure engineering of MOFs introduces an innovative pathway for the development of high‐performance MOF‐based catalysts for various reactions. Abstract:The Z-alkene geometry is prevalent in various chemical compounds, including numerous building blocks, fine chemicals, and natural products. Unfortunately, established Mo, W, and Ru Z-selective catalysts lose their selectivity at high temperatures required for industrial processes like reactive distillation, which limits their synthetic applications. To address this issue, we develop a catalyst capable of providing Z-alkenes with high selectivity under harsh conditions. Our research reveals a dithiolate ligand that, stabilised by resonance, delivers high selectivity at temperatures up to 150 °C in concentrated mixtures. This distinguishes the dithioquinoxaline complex from existing Z-selective catalysts. Notably, this trait does not compromise the new catalyst's usability under classical conditions, matching the activity of known stereoretentive catalysts. Density Functional Theory calculations were employed to understand the reaction mechanism and selectivity, and to investigate the poisoning that the catalyst may undergo and how it competes with catalytic activity. Furthermore, the quinoxaline-based catalyst enables the valorisation of bio-sourced alkene feedstocks and the production of agricultural sex pheromones for pest control.
