Abstract:The application of conventional flocculants always causes degenerative diseases, whereas natural polysaccharide (NPs)-based flocculants exhibit great potential, due to their biosafety. Considering material costs and sustainable development, NPs derived from waste have been extensively researched as a substitute for conventional flocculants, promoting the development of flocculation process toward safety, economy, and low-carbon direction. This review summarizes various waste polysaccharides (WPs) derived from ocean waste, agricultural waste, food waste, and invasive species. It then compares the treatment effects of typical WPs-based flocculants in water treatment. Flocculation mechanism of WPs-based flocculants was emphasized based on their respective structures and physicochemical properties. Moreover, flaws in WPs application have been noted, and strategies to deal with them have also been proposed. Benefiting from the environmental and economic benefits of WPs, the progress of using WPs-based flocculants is promising. However, some threats should be overcome, especially in terms of the stability and broad-spectrum applicability of WPs.

Abstract:Polymer flocculants are used to promote solid–liquid separation processes in potable water and wastewater treatment. Recently, bio-based flocculants have received a lot of attention due to their superior advantages over conventional synthetic polymers or inorganic agents. Among natural polymers, polysaccharides show many benefits such as biodegradability, non-toxicity, ability to undergo different chemical modifications, and wide accessibility from renewable sources. The following article provides an overview of bio-based flocculants and their potential application in water treatment, which may be an indication to look for safer alternatives compared to synthetic polymers. Based on the recent literature, a new approach in searching for biopolymer flocculants sources, flocculation mechanisms, test methods, and factors affecting this process are presented. Particular attention is paid to flocculants based on starch, cellulose, chitosan, and their derivatives because they are low-cost and ecological materials, accepted in industrial practice. New trends in water treatment technology, including biosynthetic polymers, nanobioflocculants, and stimulant-responsive flocculants are also considered.

Abstract:Water is an essential element contributing to human life. Evidence shows that only a portion of the water from sewage/tailings is recovered in the consolidated tailings process. The process produces sediments with a high-water content that require special storage. This is problematic because water trapped in such structures might remain there for a long period. This study investigates flocculants that can potentially help these systems. In this publication, we look at how literature has sought to optimise their formulation to enhance dewatering efficiency and present a clear overview and guidance on the main parameters involved, using both theoretical and practical examples. We have assembled over 200 references (majority published 2020 or earlier) in this review article to demonstrate the complexities of designing a flocculation system employing state-of-the-art synthesised, organic, inorganic, and hybrid flocculants. We next go over a few of examples of how to use microscopical techniques to learn more about the flocculation mechanism. This manuscript can be treated as an illustrative, visual, comprehensive view of application of flocculants to wastewater systems.

This article highlights the numerous advantages offered by bio-based polymeric materials, including their biodegradability, low cost, and renewable nature. Moreover, it discusses in depth the two primary applications of these materials in water treatment, namely flocculation and adsorption, showcasing their effectiveness in removing contaminants. Furthermore, this review addresses the future prospects and challenges associated with the development of bio-based polymeric materials for water treatment applications. Abstract:The optimization, purification and characterization of bioflocculant produced by Paenibacillus elgii B69 were investigated. The bioflocculant was an exopolysaccharide composed of glucose, glucuronic acid, mannose and xylose. The maximum bioflocculant production was about 25.63 g/L achieved with sucrose at 51.35 g/L, peptone at 6.78 g/L and yeast extract at 0.47 g/L optimized by response-surface methodology. In addition, a series of experiments was performed to investigate the flocculation activities towards kaolin clay, dyeing pigment, heavy metal ion, and real wastewater and the result indicated the new bioflocculant had high activities towards all the tested pollutions. These results showed its great potential for water pretreatment used in industry.

Abstract:As there are many advantages of using chemical flocculation process to treat pharmaceutical wastewater, including:high-effect, economical, easy operation and so on, through the combination of it with traditional aerobic / anaerobic biochemical, membrane separation and some other processes, the antibiotic occurance and the persistence fouling of membrance reactor caused by pharmaceutical wastewater could be effectively controlled.Meanwhile, the wastewater biodegradability could be elevated greatly and the wastewater quality characteristic could be improved which made the effluent quality near to or reach the standard for common organic wastewater, thus solved the problems of pharmaceutical wastewater treatment radically.The research status of the application of flocculation in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment and the main factors affecting the said process were discussed.
Synthesis, characterization and application of a novel starch-based flocculant with high flocculation and dewatering properties

Abstract:Flocculation process is one of the most widely used techniques for water and wastewater treatment, and also for sludge dewatering. Synthesis of natural biopolymers or modification of natural biopolymers as environmentally friendly flocculants is highly desired in the field of environmental protection. In this work, a water soluble copolymer flocculant, STC-g-PDMC (starch-graft-poly (2-methacryloyloxyethyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride) was synthesized through grafting a monomer, (2-methacryloyloxyethyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC), onto starch initiated by potassium persulphate. Acetone and ethanol were used for copolymer precipitation and purification in the synthesis, which diminished the toxicity during the synthesis process. The graft copolymer was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and elemental analysis. The prepared STC-g-PDMC exhibited a highly effective flocculation capability for kaolin suspensions compared with starch and polyacrylamide as control. The charge neutralization effect played an important role in the flocculation process at low flocculant dosages. When it was used as dewatering agent for anaerobic sludge, the conditioned sludge could be easily filtered after the dosage reached 0.696% of the dry weight of sludge. Such a graft copolymer is a promising green agent for wastewater treatment and sludge dewatering applications.

Abstract:The synthesis and application of conventional polymeric flocculants suffer from low flocculation efficiency and toxic residues; therefore, there is an urgent need to develop green and efficient flocculants and corresponding technologies. An amphiphilic copolymer (NPL) was synthesized by a "grafting to" strategy, using acrylamide, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride, and kraft lignin. NPL consists of a lignin core that is attached to a polyacrylamide branched chain and a cationic group, and has the properties of an amphoteric polyelectrolyte. This structure demonstrates superior flocculation performance on suspended solids. Two typical clay suspensions, kaolin and bentonite, were selected to evaluate the flocculation performance of NPL. The results showed that the turbidity of kaolin and bentonite could be reduced to 2.08 NTU and 0.31 NTU, respectively, by using NPL in combination with polymeric aluminum chloride. The synergistic effect of charge neutralization and bridging was confirmed as the main mechanism of flocculation on the two clay suspensions by a series of characterization techniques, such as zeta potential determination, particle size analysis, and focused beam reflectance measurement. The treatment of high-turbidity wastewater/feedwater with NPL was investigated, and was found to significantly improve the effluent quality. The use of NPL is efficient, environmentally friendly, and technically feasible, and shows excellent potential for the treatment of wastewater.

The Application of the Integrated Technology of Flocculation Combined with Precoating Filtration in Wastewater Reuse

Abstract:The integrated technology of flocculation combined with precoating filtration was utilized in advanced treating the effluent of city sewage disposal plant to a reuse standard. The results indicated that, with PAC dosage 75 mg·L-1, bentonite dosage 100 mg·L-1 and initial filtration rate 2.26 m·h-1, total phosphor and COD concentration decreased from 5.0 mg·L-1 to 0.3 mg·L-1, and from 100 mg·L-1 to 30 mg·L-1 respectively. Some relationship existed between filtration rate and filtrated water volume. Compared with the conventional flocculation reaction and separation technology, the integrated technology raised the effluent water quality, achieved high efficient separation, and it had a good application prospect in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Flocculation is the first and important step to remove suspended and slightly soluble pollutants in industrial wastewater treatment. Flocculant is just the key element for flocculation process. Polyacrylamide (PAM) is the most widely used flocculant. But it still holds some potential flaws which are ignored by people. An eco-friendly bamboo cellulose-grafted-ployacrylamide flocculant (BC-g-PAM) was then synthesized by free-radical graft copolymerization in homogeneous aqueous solution. The optimal synthesis conditions of the BC-g-PAM was investigated. FTIR, TG, XRD and FESEM were employed to characterize and define its molecular structure and physical characteristics. The BC-g-PAM was also adopted to treat an actual papermaking wastewater. The positive results showed that the BC-g-PAM exhibited an excellent flocculation performance on the papermaking wastewater. The average turbidity removal rate reached 99.7 % and related suspended solids exhibited the corresponding decline. This flocculation also caused a positive effect on the reduction of CODCr and BOD5 of the wastewater. Meanwhile, the BC-g-PAM exhibited an excellent biodegradability. Its degradation rate reached 63.4 % at 90 d in soil extracting solution.

Abstract:<p>The existence of toxic water contaminants (heavy metals, dyes, phenols, oils, pharmaceuticals and nutrients) restricts the sustainable supply of clean water globally. Among various economic and accessible wastewater disposal technologies, adsorption is the most extensively practiced approach due to its economic, feasible and sustainable characteristics. In recent years, polysaccharides have been extensively employed for constructing adsorption materials due to their intrinsic properties including high adsorptive ability, low cost, renewability, biodegradability, biocompatibility and ease of modification. Here, a systematic review of polysaccharide-based adsorbents for wastewater treatment is given. This review is aimed at providing: (1) general design principles for polysaccharide-based adsorbents, (2) some critical factors that may affect the adsorption and (3) future directions for the development of polysaccharide-based wastewater adsorbents. Overall, this review provides guidelines on the rational fabrication and application of polysaccharide-based adsorbents, which will be beneficial to novice/expert researchers in the field of wastewater remediation. Furthermore, the authors expect that this review provokes interdisciplinary discussions that would bring a revolution to the application of polysaccharide-based wastewater adsorbents.</p>

Flocculation and dewatering of the Kaolin slurry treated by single- and dual-polymer flocculants

Abstract:To mitigate the sudden increase in the production of waste engineering slurry, predominantly composed of Kaolinite, this study investigated the flocculation and dewatering of Kaolin slurry treated with single- and dual-polymer flocculants. The influence of the flocculant type and dosage, under single- and dual-dose conditions, on slurry's sedimentation and the filtration characteristics, were thoroughly discussed. The results reveal that the adsorption bridging of the polymeric flocculant, resulting from hydrogen bonds, exerts a more significant effect than electrical neutralization on forming a large floc. Under single-dose conditions, nonionic polyacrylamides (NPAMs) with the strongest adsorption bridging leads to biggest flocs and the maximum settling rate of 21.55 mm/s. Under the dual-dose conditions of polymeric aluminium chloride (PAC) and PAM, the size of the slurry's floc decreases with an increase in PAC dosage. Nevertheless, the filtration performance of the slurry improves, with the lowest SRF value of the flocculated slurry being 1.58 × 1011 m/kg as 3‰ PAC and 3‰ NPAM is dosed. The improvement is explained by the micro-pore distribution of sludge. According to Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) test, the slurry treated with the optimal dosage of dual-polymer flocculant exhibits the greatest sludge pore size and connected porosity (with a maximum value of 20.99%). Furthermore, the study discusses and compares the flocculation mechanism of single- and dual-polymer flocculants. The obtained results provide guidance for selecting appropriate flocculants for dewatering inorganic slurries, using different dewatering methods, such as gravitational thickening or filter pressing.

Abstract:Microbial flocculants (MBFs), a class of eco-friendly and biodegradable biopolymers produced by various microorganisms, have gained increasing attention as promising alternatives to conventional chemical flocculants in wastewater treatment and pollutant removal. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the current state of MBF research, encompassing their diverse sources (bacteria, fungi, and algae), major categories (polysaccharides, proteins, and glycoproteins), production processes, and flocculation performance and mechanisms. The wide-ranging applications of MBFs in removing suspended solids, heavy metals, dyes, and other pollutants from industrial and municipal wastewater are critically examined, highlighting their superior efficiency, selectivity, and environmental compatibility compared to traditional flocculants. Nonetheless, bioflocculants face significant challenges including high substrate costs, low production yields, and intricate purification methodologies, factors that impede their industrial scalability. Moreover, the risk of microbial contamination and the attendant health implications associated with the use of microbial flocculants (MBFs) necessitate thorough evaluation. To address the challenges of high production costs and variable product quality, strategies such as waste valorization, strain improvement, process optimization, and biosafety evaluation are discussed. Moreover, the development of multifunctional MBF-based flocculants and their synergistic use with other treatment technologies are identified as emerging trends for enhanced wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Future research directions are outlined, emphasizing the need for in-depth mechanistic studies, advanced characterization techniques, pilot-scale demonstrations to accelerate the industrial adoption of MBF, and moreover, integration with novel wastewater treatment processes, such as partial nitrification and the anammox process. This review is intended to inspire and guide further research and development efforts aimed at unlocking the full potential of MBFs as sustainable, high-performance, and cost-effective bioflocculants for addressing the escalating challenges in wastewater management and environmental conservation.

Abstract:Wastewater remains a global challenge. Various methods have been used in wastewater treatment, including flocculation. The aim of this study was to synthesize iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) using a polymeric bioflocculant and to evaluate its efficacy in the removal of pollutants in wastewater. A comparison between the efficiencies of the bioflocculant and iron nanoparticles was investigated. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX) and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were used to characterize the material. SEM-EDX analysis revealed the presence of elements such as O and C that were abundant in both samples, while FT-IR studies showed the presence of functional groups such as hydroxyl (–OH) and amine (–NH2). Fe nanoparticles showed the best flocculation activity (FA) at 0.4 mg/mL dosage as opposed to that of the bioflocculant, which displayed the highest flocculation activity at 0.8 mg/mL, and both samples were found to be cation-dependent. When evaluated for heat stability and pH stability, FeNPs were found thermostable with 86% FA at 100 °C, while an alkaline pH of 11 favored FA with 93%. The bioflocculant flocculated poorly at high temperature and was found effective mostly at a pH of 7 with over 90% FA. FeNPs effectively removed BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) and COD (chemical oxygen demand) in all two wastewater samples from coal mine water and Mzingazi River water. Cytotoxicity results showed both FeNPs and the bioflocculant as nontoxic at concentrations up to 50 μL.

This paper mainly summarizes the application of flocculation and coagulation in oily wastewater and oily sludge in recent years. Flocculation and coagulation are important means to treat oily pollutants. In recent years, great progress has been made in the research of flocculants and coagulants. In this paper, the application of flocculants and coagulants in the treatment of oily pollutants at home and abroad, the research status of various flocculants and coagulants, and the development direction of flocculants and coagulants are analyzed and summarized, providing theoretical basis and technical support for the application of flocculants and coagulants in the treatment of oily pollutants.

Abstract:Water resources are vital for sustainable human life and economic activities. However, the issue of water pollution has reached alarming levels. Coking wastewater, known for its high concentrations of organic matter and toxic substances, poses significant environmental hazards. In response to this challenge, we developed a novel composite flocculant called polymeric aluminum ferric chloride (PAFC)/rice straw (PAFC/RS) from fly ash (a coal waste) and rice straw (an agricultural waste). The PAFC/RS was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR). The flocculation performance of PAFC/RS was studied utilizing humic acid simulated coking wastewater as the target by measuring the chemical oxygen demand (COD), UV 254 , and turbidity. A removal efficiency of 97.3% for turbidity, 79.7% for COD, and 98.2% for UV 254 was reached for the PAFC/RS with an optimal composition. It demonstrated a better flocculation effect compared to the traditional aluminum–iron-based inorganic flocculant. The PAFC/RS possesses great potential for a straightforward, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly water treatment material.
