Abstract:This note presents insights on the Jordan structure of a matrix which are derived from an extension of the I(1) and I(2) conditions in Johansen (1996). It is first observed that these conditions not only characterize, as it is well known, the size (1 or 2) of the largest Jordan block in the Jordan form of the companion matrix but more generally the geometric multiplicities, the algebraic multiplicities and the whole Jordan structure for eigenvalues of index 1 or 2. In the context of the Granger representation theorem, this means that the Johansen rank conditions do more than determine the order of integration of the process. It is then shown that an extension of these conditions leads to the characterization of the Jordan structure of any matrix.

Abstract:In this paper, several equivalent conditions for the existence of a generalized Jordan form for matrices of locally nilpotent linear operators acting on an infinite countable dimensional vector space are presented, and an example is given showing that these conditions are not always fulfilled, which means the existence of infinite upper triangular matrices that are not similar to any generalized infinite Jordan matrix. Besides, it is shown that these conditions are not applicable in the case of an arbitrary dimensional of a vector space.

Abstract:For a given p×q complex matrix C , a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for the existence of a matrix X satisfying JpX−XJq=C , here Jr denotes the r×r Jordan block of 0. An easy construction of the solution X is given if it exists. These results lead to a proof of the fact that a nilpotent matrix is similar to a direct sum of Jordan blocks.

Abstract:Invariant norms, also called Barabanov norms, are defined in $R^d$ for any compact family $\mathcal A$ of $d \times d$ matrices. They correspond to the linear switching system, which is a differential equation $\dot x(t) = A(t)x(t)$, where $A(t) \in \mathcal A$ for each $t$. The invariant norm identifies the trajectories $x(t)$ of the fastest asymptotic growth as $t\to +\infty$. It also solves the stability problem. This norm is difficult to construct even for a pair of matrices. We show that in case $d=2$ the invariant norm can be found explicitly for every compact matrix family $\mathcal A$. If $\mathcal A$ does not contain a dominant matrix with a real spectrum, then this norm is always unique (up to a multiplier) and is $C^1$, otherwise, there may be infinitely many norms. All of them can be found and classified.

Abstract:Firmly nonexpansive mappings are introduced in Hadamard manifolds, a particular class of Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive sectional curvature. The resolvent of a set-valued vector field is defined in this setting and by means of this concept, a strong relationship between monotone vector fields and firmly nonexpansive mappings is established. This fact is then used to prove that the resolvent of a maximal monotone vector field has full domain. The Yosida approximation of a set-valued vector field is also introduced, analyzing its properties from which the asymptotic behavior of the resolvent is studied. Regarding the singularities of a set-valued monotone vector field, existence results are proved under certain boundary condition. As a consequence, the existence of fixed points for continuous pseudo-contractive mappings is obtained.
Tight general bounds for the extremal numbers of 0-1 matrices

Abstract:A zero-one matrix $M$ is said to contain another zero-one matrix $A$ if we can delete some rows and columns of $M$ and replace some $1$-entries with $0$-entries such that the resulting matrix is $A$. The extremal number of $A$, denoted $\operatorname{ex}(n,A)$, is the maximum number of $1$-entries that an $n\times n$ zero-one matrix can have without containing $A$. The systematic study of this function for various patterns $A$ goes back to the work of Füredi and Hajnal from 1992, and the field has many connections to other areas of mathematics and theoretical computer science. The problem has been particularly extensively studied for so-called acyclic matrices, but very little is known about the general case (that is, the case where $A$ is not necessarily acyclic). We prove the first asymptotically tight general result by showing that if $A$ has at most $t$ $1$-entries in every row, then $\operatorname{ex}(n,A)\leq n^{2-1/t+o(1)}$. This verifies a conjecture of Methuku and Tomon.

Abstract: To study the Lawson-Osserman's counterexample to the Bernstein problem for minimal submanifolds of higher codimension, a new geometric concept, submanifolds in Euclidean space with constant Jordan angles(CJA), is introduced. By exploring the second fundamental form of submanifolds with CJA, we can characterize the Lawson-Osserman's cone from the viewpoint of Jordan angles.

Abstract:The inverse of the metric matrices on the Siegel-Jacobi upper half space ${\mathcal{X}}^J_n$, invariant to the restricted real Jacobi group $G^J_n(\mathbb{R})_0$ and extended Siegel-Jacobi $\tilde{\mathcal{X}}^J_n$ upper half space, invariant to the action of the real Jacobi $G^J_n(\mathbb{R})$, are presented. The results are relevant for Berezin quantization of the manifolds ${\mathcal{X}}^J_ n$ and $\tilde{\mathcal{X}}^J_n$. Explicit calculations in the case $n=2$ are given.

Abstract:In this brief article we indicate a connection between Jordan normal form of a square matrix and the stroboscopic approach to quantum tomography. We show that the index of cyclicy of a generator of evolution, which receives much attention in the stroboscopic tomography, can be defined and computed by referring to the Jordan decomposition of a square matrix. The result presented in this work shows a relation between terminology from quantum tomography and linear algebra.

Abstract:Let $X,\,Y$ be Banach spaces and fix a linear operator $T \in \mathcal {L}(X,\,Y)$ and ideals $\mathcal {I},\, \mathcal {J}$ on the nonnegative integers. We obtain Silverman–Toeplitz type theorems on matrices $A=(A_{n,k}: n,\,k \in \omega )$ of linear operators in $\mathcal {L}(X,\,Y)$ , so that \[ \mathcal{J}\text{-}\lim A\boldsymbol{x}=T(\mathcal{I}\text{-}\lim \boldsymbol{x}) \] for every $X$ -valued sequence $\boldsymbol {x}=(x_0,\,x_1,\,\ldots )$ which is $\mathcal {I}$ -convergent (and bounded). This allows us to establish the relationship between the classical Silverman–Toeplitz characterization of regular matrices and its multidimensional analogue for double sequences, its variant for matrices of linear operators, and the recent version (for the scalar case) in the context of ideal convergence. As byproducts, we obtain characterizations of several matrix classes and a generalization of the classical Hahn–Schur theorem. In the proofs we use an ideal version of the Banach–Steinhaus theorem which has been recently obtained by De Bondt and Vernaeve [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 495 (2021)].

Abstract:This paper presents a study on Jordan maps over matrix rings with some functional equations related to additive maps on these rings. We first show that every Jordan left (right) centralizer over a matrix ring is a left (right) centralizer. Moreover, every two-sided centralizer over the matrix ring is of a particular form. Further, we prove that any additive map satisfying functional equations over matrix rings becomes a two-sided centralizer. Finally, we conclude our work with some results on the Jordan left $\star$- centralizer over matrix rings and establish some results on functional equations that arise for the $\star$-centralizer.

Matrix Convex Sets Without Absolute Extreme Points

Abstract:This article shows the existence of a class of closed bounded matrix convex sets which do not have absolute extreme points. The sets we consider are noncommutative sets, $K_X$, formed by taking matrix convex combinations of a single tuple $X$. In the case that $X$ is a tuple of compact operators with no nontrivial finite dimensional reducing subspaces, $K_X$ is a closed bounded matrix convex set with no absolute extreme points. A central goal in the theory of matrix convexity is to find a natural notion of an extreme point in the dimension free setting which is minimal with respect to spanning. Matrix extreme points are the strongest type of extreme point known to span matrix convex sets; however, they are not necessarily the smallest set which does so. Absolute extreme points, a more restricted type of extreme points that are closely related to Arveson's boundary, enjoy a strong notion of minimality should they span. This result shows that matrix convex sets may fail to be spanned by their absolute extreme points.

Abstract:Let Σ be the collection of all 2n × 2n partitioned complex matrices where A 1 and A 2 are n × n complex matrices, the bars on top of them mean matrix conjugate. We show that Σ is closed under similarity transformation to Jordan (canonical) forms. Precisely, any matrix in Σ is similar to a matrix in the form J ⊕ ∈ Σ via an invertible matrix in Σ, where J is a Jordan form whose diagonalelements all have nonnegative imaginary parts. An application of this result gives the Jordan form of real quaternion matrices.

Abstract:We present several results describing the interplay between the max algebraic joint spectral radius (JSR) for compact sets of matrices and suitably defined matrix norms. In particular, we extend a classical result for the conventional algebra, showing that the JSR can be described in terms of induced norms of the matrices in the set. We also show that for a set generating an irreducible semigroup (in a cone-theoretic sense), a monotone Barabanov norm always exists. This fact is then used to show that the max algebraic JSR is locally Lipschitz continuous on the space of compact irreducible sets of matrices with respect to the Hausdorff distance. We then prove that the JSR is Hoelder continuous on the space of compact sets of nonnegative matrices. Finally, we prove a strict monotonicity property for the max algebraic JSR that echoes a fact for the classical JSR.

Abstract:We develop subordinacy theory for extended CMV matrices. That is, we provide explicit supports for the singular and absolutely continuous parts of the canonical spectral measure associated with a given extended CMV matrix in terms of the presence or absence of subordinate solutions of the generalized eigenvalue equation. Abstract:We consider subalgebras $\mathcal{A}$ of the algebra $M_n$ of $n \times n$ complex matrices that contain all diagonal matrices, known in the literature as the structural matrix algebras (SMAs). Let $\mathcal{A} \subseteq M_n$ be an arbitrary SMA. We first show that any commuting family of diagonalizable matrices $\mathcal{F}\subseteq \mathcal{A}$ can be intrinsically simultaneously diagonalized, i.e. there exists an invertible matrix $S \in \mathcal{A}$ such that all matrices $S^{-1}AS$ ($A \in \mathcal{F}$) are diagonal. We then characterize when one SMA Jordan-embeds into another and in that case we describe the form of such Jordan embeddings. As a consequence, we obtain a description of Jordan automorphisms of SMAs, generalizing Coelho's result on their algebra automorphisms. Next, motivated by the results of Marcus-Moyls and Molnar-Šemrl connecting linear rank-one preservers with Jordan embeddings $M_n \to M_n$ and $\mathcal{T}_n \to M_n$ (where $\mathcal{T}_n$ is the algebra of $n \times n$ upper-triangular matrices) respectively, we show that any linear unital rank-one preserver $\mathcal{A} \to M_n$ is necessarily a Jordan embedding. As the converse fails in general, we also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for when it does hold true. Finally, we obtain a complete description of linear rank preservers $\mathcal{A} \to M_n$, as maps of the form $$ X \mapsto S\left(PX + (I-P)X^t\right)T,$$ for some invertible matrices $S,T \in M_n$ and a central idempotent $P\in\mathcal{A}$.

In this article, we investigate the existence of columns containing an equal or greater number of ones than zeros.
