Abstract:Chaoshan, located on the east coast of Guangdong Province in South China, is a region with profound cultural and linguistic distinctiveness. This pilot study investigates the language situation in the Chaoshan region, focusing on the city of Shantou. It addresses key sociolinguistic issues such as language policy, attitude, identity, and mutual intelligibility among varieties of Teochew. Prior research mainly concentrated on language shift and maintenance, but this study delves deeper to explore sociolinguistic peculiarities within sub-communities and mutual intelligibility issues [Lin, 1994, 2005, 2017; F. Chen, 2017; H. Chen, 2020; Huang & Fang, 2021]. Results from 142 participants highlight significant intra-community differences in language practices, attitude, and identity among the three sub-communities. The South Shore sub-community - Haojiang, Chaoyang and Chaonan Districts and its variety stand out in interactions with other sub-communities: Downtown and Chenghai, primarily in language practices, attitudes and identity. The study also provides insights into the mutual intelligibility among three Teochew varieties, revealing the complexity of the language situation.

Abstract:With the promotion of standard Chinese in China, dialects are becoming less and less important or even extinct. However, in Shanghai where the economy is developing very fast, the relationship between the dialect and standard Chinese in the field of literature seems returned to the original state at the beginning of modern Chinese literature. With the development of contemporary and modern Chinese literature as a context and Shanghai writers as an example, this paper will analyze the great influence of standard Chinese and dialects on contemporary and modern Chinese literature, the different manifestation between Northern and Southern areas, and the complicated reasons of this phenomenon.

Abstract:The transcultural communication that characterizes our times needs to be carried out in a few commonly shared languages and this requirement has sharpened the awareness about uneven language status. While defenders of minor languages frequently make use of such concepts as ecosystem, human rights, capital, power, imperialism, etc. To express alarm at the spread of the English language in the present world, researchers tend to forget that these concepts applied to languages are only metaphors which, taken at their face value, would conceal the non-exclusive nature of language as a communicative instrument. A question is raised as to whether we should go beyond an essentially nationalist perception of language inherited from the nineteenth century.

Abstract:Borge Udell, the founder of Wikitongues, questioned ‘Would Cervantes have written the same stories had he been forced to write in a language other than Spanish? Would the music of Beyoncé be the same in a language other than English?’ What he means is that every language carries a unique culture and represents a group of people. All languages and dialects are worth appreciation and preservation. Shanghainese dialect is no exception. As a native Shanghainese citizen, I believe that it is high time that we should be aware of the importance of preserving and inheriting this dialect. To achieve this goal, research about the current situation is indispensable. Therefore, I researched the current situation of Shanghainese and implicated some possible methods to protect this dialect.

Abstract:With over 14 million speakers, Shanghainese is the most widespread member of the Wu family of Chinese dialects and the predominant language of the city of Shanghai and the Yangzi River delta. Distinct from and mutually unintelligible with the official Chinese dialect of Mandarin, Shanghainese is experiencing a revival both within Shanghai and throughout central China. It contains 4,000 dictionary entries, and also provides concise grammar and pronunciation sections.

Enacting Chinese-ness on Arab Land: A Case Study of the Linguistic Landscape of an (Emerging) Chinatown in Multilingual and Multicultural Dubai

Abstract:An urban space's linguistic landscape represents a multimodal and multilingual discourse, indexing the historical, socio-political, cultural, and ethnolinguistic aspects of the locale. Contributing to sociolinguistic research in our global cities, this study zooms in on an unexpected Chinese ethnic enclave, or Chinatown, in Dubai, a superdiverse urban space and multilingual contact zone in post-colonial UAE. Drawing on a corpus of authentic LL data taken from Dubai's emerging 'Chinatown', the study shows that a multilingual triad involving Arabic, English and Chinese is a pervasive sight in this area, deviating from the taken-for-granted and 'choreographed' bilingual LL in Dubai overall featuring Arabic and English. Notably, Chinese, as an index of ethnic, linguistic, and cultural identity and marker of boundary, is the most prominent and informative, whereas Dubai's official language Arabic often appears in small font size and is rendered inconspicuous. This gives rise to a scenario I call 'small-print multilingualism' – a conscious attempt for small-business owners to include Arabic reluctantly only to get the 'job' done and conform to relevant rules and regulations. Theoretically, this article argues for the relevance of Bakhtin's concepts of centripetal and centrifugal forces in helping shed light on the dynamic and negotiated relationship between official top-down regulations and bottom-up linguistic practices on the ground in ethnic enclaves. Ultimately, this study adds to our understandings of language and multilingualism in (super)diverse global cities

Abstract:Owning to the special location of Shanghai, almost every large population migration throughout the history of China left traces in Shanghai. We collected data of Shanghai from 13 populations which have obvious differences in terms of dialects. The cluster analysis on the data showed that the populations to the east of Huangpu River are relatively pure while the populations to the west of Huangpu River are relatively mingled. Both the populations can be further clustered to a third one. This suggests that the populations in Shanghai suburb may have 3 sources. (Most of the inhabitants of Jinhui town in west Fengxian County and the Maqiao town of Minhang area are natives of South China. The inhabitants of Chongming County, Jiading area Pudong area and Nanhui County are the immigrants from North China, those of Touqiao town in Fengxian County, Jinshan area,Zhujiajiao and Shangta of Qingpu area, Tianmashan of Songjiang area are the immigrates from the west.) These conclusions are generally consistent to the historical record, except for some minor deviations.

Abstract:This research studies language policy, linguistic landscape and residents' perception of language use in Guangzhou, China, exploring the extent to which they are convergent with or divergent from one another. With the triad framework encompassing spatial practice, conceived space and lived space [Trumper-Hecht, N. (2010). Linguistic landscape in mixed cities in Israel from the perspective of 'walkers'. In E. Shohamy (Eds.), Linguistic landscape in the city (pp. 235–251). Bristol: Multilingual Matters], linguistic landscape practice, language policy and residents' perception are conceptualized as three interconnected dimensions of linguistic landscape. Each dimension is examined independently before being compared with and contrasted to the other two dimensions. Results indicate that there are incessant conflicts and dissents in the city space of Guangzhou, especially in relation to the use of English, Cantonese and traditional Chinese characters. By showing the conflicts between multicultural/multilingual society reality and the 'monoglot linguistic regime' [Pan, L. (2010). Dissecting multilingual Beijing. Visual Communication, 9(1), 67–90] in the Chinese context, this study argues for the increasing importance of linguistic diversity and harmony. It also demonstrates the agency of linguistic landscape creators and the bidirectional relation in language planning between language planners and recipients.

Abstract:China's social development changes recent urban language environment.Base on the relevant survey,analyze the changes in urban language environment and explore the reasons of language conflicts in the new language environment taking the incident of Guangdong dialect as an example.The survey results show that the features of new urban language environment include:1)urban language gradually changes to a dual-language;2)According to the space of use and their status,different codes of urban language environment have play an unequal part in everyday life.In this new context,the language conflict such as the event of" supporting the use of Guangdong dialect"happened.Through the analysis of the event,it is concluded that open language awareness and better language ability can avoid the happening of such similar event.

Abstract:This study analyses the evolving means of China's formal language policy on Putonghua and minority languages from 1986 to 2021. This paper identifies four stages based on the shifting focus between Putonghua and minority languages: status planning of the central government (1986-1990), balance via bilingual policy (1991-2000), strong Putonghua spread at all levels (2001-2011), and Putonghua promotion and minority language preservation (2012-2021). Through descriptive and corpus analysis of a self-constructed language policy database, for each stage, we explore the major means stated in policy documents by analysing keywords to explain policy changes with consideration of social conditions. The results show that China has continuously adjusted its formal language policy according to social changes, and that language planning in this emerging economy has been profoundly influenced by national strategy and government administration.

Abstract:Despite having numerous Chinese language varieties and non-Chinese ethnic minority languages, China is often considered a monolingual nation (Liang, Sihua. 2015. Language Attitudes and Identities in Multilingual China: A Linguistic Ethnography. London: Springer, 154). The country's strong monolingual language policy heavily promotes a single standard language – Putonghua. Recently, scholars have begun to investigate 'regional Putonghua' varieties, contact varieties that have emerged from standard language promotion and community second language acquisition (e.g. Xiao, Jinsong. 2007. "Putonghua Zhongjieyu Yanjiu Shuping." Journal of Yunyang Normal College 27 (2): 119–122).This paper analyses data collected from Weibo, China's online microblogging site, to investigate the language ideologies surrounding these 'non-standard' regional varieties. Two cities (Ningbo and Shanghai) and their local Putonghua varieties are examined: the cities share a similar linguistic background but Shanghai is more economically advanced than its neighbouring city Ningbo, and the language varieties in Shanghai are also believed to have more prestige (Zhou, Minglang. 2001. "The Spread of Putonghua and Language Attitude Changes in Shanghai and Guangzhou, China." Journal of Asian Pacific Communication 11 (2): 231–253).Discourse analysis on Weibo posts allows us to show how regional Putonghua varieties are portrayed and perceived by laypeople and how they exist as 'non-standard' varieties in the shadow of the strong standard language ideology. These 'non-standard' varieties are associated with rich language ideologies and social meanings and their links to both negative cultural stereotypes and positive local identities often associated with vernacular varieties are also discussed.

Two Worlds in One City: a Sociopolitical Perspective on Chinese Urban Families' Language Planning

Abstract:This comparative inquiry investigated the family language planning in two distinctive socioeconomic communities in a Chinese metropolitan city. We followed a multilayered framework to probe into language beliefs, practices and management in the family domain as mediated by the interconnectivity of multiple contextual forces. We collected three types of data from governmental policy documents, field visits to two community libraries, and questionnaires from 237 residents from the two communities. Data analysis identified an early childhood language policy disfavoring English learning at the macro level, distinctive English literacy activities at the meso-community level, and similar aspirations with different management practices at the micro-family level. We argue that the observed disjuncture in English language planning between the macro and micro levels creates a space for parents as social actors to take ownership and negotiate their language planning activities at the meso level. However, although families from different socioeconomic backgrounds demonstrated similar aspirations for their children's English and Chinese development, the parents' socioeconomic status affected their ability to invest family capital in their children's language learning, and to translate their language ideologies into consistent language planning activities. Issues related to educational equity are discussed at the end of the paper.
Treaty-Port English in Nineteenth-Century Shanghai: Speakers, Voices, and Images

Abstract:This article examines the introduction of English to the treaty port of Shanghai and the speech communities that developed there as a result. English became a sociocultural phenomenon rather than an academic subject when it entered Shanghai in the 1840s, gradually generating various social activities of local Chinese people who lived in the treaty port. Ordinary people picked up a rudimentary knowledge of English along trading streets and through glossary references, and went to private schools to improve their linguistic skills. They used English to communicate with foreigners and as a means to explore a foreign presence dominated by Western material culture. Although those who learned English gained small-scale social mobility in the late nineteenth century, the images of English-speaking Chinese were repeatedly criticized by the literati and official scholars. This article explores Westerners’ travel accounts, as well as various sources written by the new elite Chinese, including official records and vernacular poems, to demonstrate how English language acquisition brought changes to local people’s daily lives. The author argues that treaty-port English in nineteenth-century Shanghai was not only a linguistic medium but, more importantly, a cultural agent of urban transformation. It gradually molded a new linguistic landscape, which at the same time contributed to the shaping of modern Shanghai culture.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Using a database containing Chinese language laws, regulations, and documents from 1986 to 2019, this study investigates the distribution of Putonghua and minority language policies in mainland China. It is found that: (i) in terms of the hierarchy of law, there are five levels of policies in China, with the Constitution and language laws as guidelines and local regulations dominant in quantity; (ii) in terms of the temporal dimension, while Putonghua policy has always been stressed, particularly serving economic growth in the last five years, the emphasis on Putonghua and attention to minority languages vary over time, while minority languages are treated as linguistic resources and their ongoing use and development may be overlooked; and (iii) in terms of provincial regions, while Putonghua is officially designated as a main language, ethnic minority areas differ in their partial language autonomy and adopt quite different language policies.

When a koiné meets larger lingua francas: attrition of English loanwords in Shanghainese induced by new language contacts

Abstract:This article investigates 90 Shanghainese participants’ cross-generational use and knowledge of 140 English loanwords in Shanghainese which are deemed as an important part of Shanghai Regional Culture (SRC). The quantitative results reveal that the older participants use and know much more of English loanwords than the younger ones, and that many distinctive loan verbs and nouns are replaced by Putonghua (PTH) equivalents. By analysing the results of both the questionnaire survey and interviews based on the Guy’s [1990. “The Sociolinguistic Types of Language Change.” Diachronica 7: 47–67] classificatory paradigm of language changes, I argue that this lexical replacement, as a type of ‘imposition’, caused by the intense contact between Shanghainese and PTH, suggests lexical attrition of Shanghainese, which leads to linguistic convergence and cultural homogeneity. In the new contact triggered by nationwide migration, the national lingua franca has cut off the direct contact between Shanghainese and English. Shanghainese has retreated from a regional koiné to a vernacular.

Abstract:As one of the core research subjects in sociolinguistics,language variation is widely paid attention to in China.This paper makes a statistical analysis of the articles on language variation published in CSSCI over recent 20 years(1992-2011),suggesting that research on language variation in China has made considerable progress during this period.However,it is pointed out that there are still some problems with the research method,contents and depth.The paper reviews on the current research results,which is conducive to grasping the research development trend of language variation in China,thus providing reference for future research work.

Abstract:Abstract The recent publication of the novel Magnificent Flowers ( Fan Hua 繁花) has attracted attention not only because of critical acclaim and market success, but also because of its use of Shanghainese. While Magnificent Flowers is the most notable recent book to make substantial use of Shanghainese, it is not alone, and the recent increase in the number of books that are written partially or even entirely in Shanghainese raises the question of whether written Shanghainese may develop a role in Chinese print culture, especially that of Shanghai and the surrounding region, similar to that attained by written Cantonese in and around Hong Kong. This study examines the history of written Shanghainese in print culture. Growing out of the older written Suzhounese tradition, during the early decades of the twentieth century a distinctly Shanghainese form of written Wu emerged in the print culture of Shanghai, and Shanghainese continued to play a role in Shanghai’s print culture through the twentieth century, albeit quite a modest one. In the first decade of the twenty-first century Shanghainese began to receive increased public attention and to play a greater role in Shanghai media, and since 2009 there has been an increase in the number of books and other kinds of texts that use Shanghainese and also the degree to which they use it. This study argues that in important ways this phenomenon does parallel the growing role played by written Cantonese in Hong Kong, but that it also differs in several critical regards. The most important difference is that, to date, written Shanghainese appears almost exclusively in texts that look back to “old Shanghai” and/or to traditional alley life in Shanghai, and that a role of the type written Cantonese has in Hong Kong is not likely to be attained unless or until Shanghainese texts that are associated with modern urban Shanghai life, especially youth culture, begin to appear.

Abstract:This article focuses on the linguistic landscape of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, investigates factors contributing to this distinctive landscape, and examines its role in maintaining two ethnic languages, Mongolian and Korean. 1046 language signs in three major cities were analysed and 28 interviews were conducted to evaluate interviewee attitudes towards the linguistic landscape. The results indicate that the Inner Mongolian linguistic landscape is one of abundant linguistic diversity, with the majority of signs (61.9%) displaying more than one language; that this landscape is influenced by factors such as language planning, language preferences, economic development needs, and tourist demands; and that Mongolian and Korean have high levels of visibility on both official and private signs. Mongolian and Korean interviewees expressed delight in seeing their ethnic languages displayed and believed that public displays of local languages could help maintain ethnic languages by providing a physical and visual representation of linguistic presence and ethnic identity.

Indexical order and language ideology in the linguistic landscape of tourism in Hong Kong: Chungking Mansions and its surroundings

Abstract:This study undertakes an investigation into the linguistic landscape of tourism in the tourist areas of Chungking Mansions and its surrounding environs in Hong Kong and intends to reveal similarities and differences in the linguistic signs in the two areas by employing a statistical analysis of a comprehensive database of public signs. The results show that official signs in the two areas prioritize the use of Chinese and English, and Chinese has a marginally higher representation in the surrounding areas. In contrast, private signs in Chungking Mansions exhibit a distinctive linguistic diversity, with over 20 languages represented, and English occupying dominant position, followed by Arabic, Hindi, and other languages. In the surrounding areas, private signs are displayed in eight languages, with Chinese being the predominant code, followed by English, Japanese, Korean, and other languages. It is found that the linguistic landscape of tourism in Hong Kong is diversified, contextualized by historical, political, cultural, and economic factors, and characterized by indexical ordering and ideological implications, and English plays a crucial role in distinguishing Hong Kong from other Chinese cities. In addition, the study offers insights into the complexity and importance of linguistic diversity in the context of tourism and urban development.
