Abstract:It is shown here that loosely bound halo structure of neutron rich nuclei and the ground state spin of single neutron halo nuclei are correlated and are consistently explained if one assumes a double potential shell model for these nuclei.

Abstract:Halos epitomize the fascinating interplay between weak binding, shell evolution, and deformation effects, especially in nuclei near the drip line. In this Letter, we apply the state-of-the-art ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group approach to predict potential candidates for one- and two-neutron halo in the intermediate-mass region. Notably, we use spectroscopic factors (SF) and two-nucleon amplitudes (TNA) as criteria for suggesting one- and two-neutron halo candidates, respectively. This approach is not only theoretically sound but also amenable to experimental validation. Our research focuses on Mg, Al, Si, P, and S neutron-drip-line nuclei, offering systematic predictions of neutron halo candidates in terms of separation energies, SF (TNA), and average occupation. The calculation suggests the ground states of Al40,42,44,46 , Si41,43,45,47 , P46,48 , and S47,49 are promising candidates for one-neutron halos, while Mg40,42,44,46 , Al45,47 , Si46,48 , P49 , and S50 may harbor two-neutron halos. In addition, the relative mean-square neutron radius between halo nuclei and inner core is calculated for suggested potential neutron halos. Abstract:Neutron scattering off neutron halos can provide important information about the internal structure of nuclei close to the neutron drip line. In this work, we use halo effective field theory to study the s -wave scattering of a neutron and the spin-parity JP=12+ one-neutron halo nuclei Be11, C15 , and C19 at leading order. In the J=1 channel, the only inputs to the Faddeev equations are their one-neutron separation energies. In the J=0 channel, the neutron-neutron scattering length and the two-neutron separation energies of Be12, C16 , and C20 enter as well. The numerical results show that the total s -wave cross sections in the J=1 channel at threshold are of the order of a few barns. In the J=0 channel, these cross sections are of the order of a few barns for n−Be11 and n−C19 scattering, and about 60 mb for the n−C15 scattering. The appearance of a pole in pcotδ close to zero in all three cases indicates the existence of a virtual Efimov state close to threshold in each of the Be12, C16 , and C20 systems. Observation of this pole would confirm the presence of Efimov physics in halo nuclei. A two-cluster approach to the properties of one- and two-neutron-halo nuclei

Abstract:In this work, we present a new approximate method for obtaining simple wave functions and effective operators for the ground state of exotic nuclei with a neutron halo. We treat the core and halo as inert objects in a two-cluster model. The relative wave function is a combination of simple harmonic oscillator states with a size that is determined from a relation between the nuclear radius and separation energy. Since these wave functions lack the expected exponential decay, we apply a multiplicative renormalization to the radial part of the operators, determined from the nuclear root-mean-square radius. This combination of oscillator wavefunctions and renormalized operators is then applied to the calculation of dipole strength distributions $dB(E1,\varepsilon)/d\varepsilon$ for several $1n$- and $2n$-halo nuclei. By fitting a single free parameter, the results show excellent agreement with the available experimental data.

Abstract:The three-body calculations on halo nuclei are reviewed and discussed. It is concluded that the ground state properties of halo nuclei 11 Li , 14 Be and 17 B are independent of the shape of two-body potentials and an explanation on it is given. It is also shown that an introduction of a three-body interaction may be useful for a good explanation of the properties of halo nuclei.

Abstract:The neutron halo and other ground-state properties of light nuclei have been studied systematically by mean-field approximation with Skyrme force fit Eσ as the effective interaction. Pairing interactions between identical nucleons are considered with the particle number conservation (PNC) method. The relationship between neutron pairing interaction and neutron halo in light nuclei is discussed based on the calculation.

Abstract:The density-dependent relativistic mean-field theory with sigma, omega, and rho mesons, as a parameter-free calculation, has been used to study the ground-state properties of Be-12,Be-14, Ne-30,Ne-32, Ca-60,Ca-62, and Zr-122,Zr-124. A special emphasis is placed on the influence of the rho tenser coupling on the neutron halo and on the spin-orbit splitting. It is shown for the first time that the inclusion of the rho tenser coupling will lead to the isospin-dependent spin-orbit splitting although the binding energy and the radius of these nuclei are insensitive to it.

Abstract:Abstract.With the relativistic Coulomb wave function boundary condition, the energies, widths and wave functions of the single-proton resonant orbitals for 17Ne are studied by the analytical continuation in the coupling constant (ACCC) approach within the framework of the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory. Pairing correlations and contributions from the single-particle resonant orbitals in the continuum are taken into consideration by the resonant Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) approach, in which the constant pairing strength is used. It can be seen that the fully self-consistent calculations with NL3 and NLSH effective interactions mostly agree with the latest experimental measurements, such as binding energies, matter radii, charge radii and densities. Abstract:The excited states of some odd A nuclei near the stability line have been systematically investigated from light to intermediate mass with the spherical relativistic mean field (RMF) model. The ratio between the valence nucleon root-mean-square (RMS) radius and the core rms radius, the separation energy and the density distribution have been deduced as signatures for halo or skin structure. We have presented the scaling laws of the ratio of valence particle rms radii and square-potential radii versus the scaled separation energies. The probability for a valence particle being out of the binding potential has also been extracted. We proposed a relaxed necessary condition for nuclear halo occurrence.

Abstract:The relativistic density-dependent Hartree framework, where the relativistic two-body correlations are properly incorporated, is developed to study the properties of halo nuclei. The halo nucleon–meson vertex is reconstructed considering the nuclear potentials can be built dominantly from the two-body interactions. The two-neutron halo nucleus 11 Li , together with the one-neutron halo nucleus 19 C , is investigated. Separation energies, root-mean-square (rms) radii, and halo tails of above halo nuclei are nicely reproduced. The correlation contribution which provides essential attractions for halo neutrons is important to guarantee the relation Sn>S2n for 11 Li .
A New Fundamental Duality in Nuclei and its Implications for Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:The Liquid Drop Models (LDM) and the Independent Particle Models (IPM) have been known to provide two conflicting pictures of the nucleus. The IPM being quantum mechanical, is believed to provide a fundamental picture of the nucleus and hence has been focus of the still elusive unified theory of the nucleus. It is believed that the LDM at best is an effective and limited model of the nucleus. Here, through a comprehensive study of one nucleon separation energy, we give convincing evidence that actually the LDM is as fundamental and as basic for the description of the nucleus as the IPM is. As such the LDM and the IPM provide simultaneously co-exiting complementary duality of the nuclear phenomena. This fundamental duality also provides solution to the decades old Coester Band problem in the nucleus. Similarity and differences with respect to the well known wave-particle duality, as envisaged in Bohr's Complementarity Principle, is pointed out. Thereafter implications of this new Duality in the nucleus for quantum mechanics is discussed.

Abstract:Large-scale shell model calculations are performed within the fpg(9/2) valence space to study the odd-proton Mn57-62 isotopes of the neutron-rich region. The study emphasizes the importance of neutron g(9/2) excitations, which make it possible to extend the calculation to high-spin states, up to J = 27/2 (h) over bar for the odd-mass Mn-57,Mn-59,Mn-61 and J = 16 (h) over bar for the odd-odd Mn-58,Mn-60,Mn-62, for both positive and negative parities. It is demonstrated that the extended pairing-plus-quadrupole interaction with monopole corrections captures main structure properties of these nuclei. We quantitatively compare the calculated levels with existing experimental data, and pay attention especially to those tentatively assigned states by experiment. Abstract:Properties of single- Λ and double- Λ hypernuclei for even-N Ca isotopes ranging from the proton dripline to the neutron dripline are studied using the relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory with a zero-range pairing interaction. Compared with ordinary nuclei, the addition of one or two Λ-hyperons lowers the Fermi level. The predicted neutron dripline nuclei are, respectively, 75ΛCa and 762ΛCa, as the additional attractive force provided by the Λ-N interaction shifts nuclei from outside to inside the dripline. Therefore, the last bound hypernuclei have two more neutrons than the corresponding ordinary nuclei. Based on the analysis of two-neutron separation energies, neutron single-particle energy levels, the contribution of continuum and nucleon density distribution, giant halo phenomena due to the pairing correlation, and the contribution from the continuum are suggested to exist in Ca hypernuclei similar to those that appear in ordinary Ca isotopes.

Abstract:The three-body model with central two-body Yukawa interactions is applied to the nuclei Li-11, Be-14 and 17B and a long-range effective potential is obtained using the equivalent two-body method for a three-body system. It is first pointed out that the long-range effective potential indicates the effect of the three-body correlation and leads to neutron haloes in these nuclei. Quite good agreement between theoretical results and the experimental data is obtained.

Abstract:The shell corrections and shell gaps in nuclei are systematically studied with the latest Weizsäcker-Skyrme (WS4) mass model. We find that most of asymmetric nuclei with (sub)-shell closures locate along the shell stability line (SSL), N=1.37Z+13.5, which might be due to a strong correlation between neutrons and protons near Fermi surface. The double magicity of nuclei ^46Si and ^78Ni is predicted according to the corresponding shell gaps, shell corrections and nuclear deformations. The unmeasured super-heavy nuclei ^296118 and ^298120, with relatively large shell gaps and shell corrections, also locate along the SSL, whereas the traditional magic nucleus ^298Fl evidently deviates from the line. The α-decay energies of super-heavy nuclei with Z=113-126 are simultaneously investigated by using the WS4 model together with the radial basis function corrections. For super-heavy nuclei with large shell corrections, the smallest α-decay energy for elements Z=116, 117 and 118 in their isotope chains locates at N=178 rather than 184.
Prediction of two-neutron halos in the $N=28$ isotones $^{40}$Mg and $^{39}$Na

Abstract:The ground states of the nuclei $^{40}$Mg and $^{39}$Na are investigated using the hyperspherical formalism. Since they are located at the edge of the "big island of inversion", we concentrate on whether we are likely to find two-neutron Borromean halos in these nuclei. A three-body model with effective $n$-$n$ and $^{38}$Mg$+n$ interactions is built for $^{40}$Mg based on the available data. We also give predictions for the low-lying spectrum of $^{38}$Na$=^{37}$Na$+n$ and two-neutron separation energy of the $^{39}$Na nucleus. Depending on parameter choice, we report an increase in the matter radii in the range $0.1$-$0.5$ fm relative to those of the core nuclei. The results suggest a two-neutron halo structure in $^{40}$Mg for a subset of parameters, reinforcing the prediction of a Borromean halo nucleus. The calculations indicate that a two-neutron halo is even more likely for $^{39}$Na. As expected, the halo is linked to the disappearance of the shell gap in these nuclei due to the inversion of the $2p_{3/2}$ and $1f_{7/2}$ orbitals. We study the total cross section for scattering of these nuclei from a carbon target using a Glauber model and show that these provide a clear signal to assess the halo structure.

Abstract:An effective alpha-particle equation is derived for cases where an alpha particle is bound to a doubly magic nucleus. As an example, we consider Po-212 with the alpha on top of the Pb-208 core. We consider the core nucleus infinitely heavy, so that the alpha particle moves with respect to a fixed center; that is, recoil effects are neglected. The fully quantal solution of the problem is discussed. The approach is inspired by the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Ropke wave function concept that has been successfully applied to light nuclei. Shell-model calculations are improved by including four-particle (alpha-like) correlations that are of relevance when the matter density becomes low. In the region where the alpha-like cluster penetrates the core nucleus, the intrinsic bound-state wave function transforms at a critical density into an unbound four-nucleon shell-model state. Exploratory calculations for Po-212 are presented. Such preformed cluster states are very difficult to describe with shell-model calculations. Reasons for the different physics behavior of an alpha-like cluster with respect to a deuteron-like cluster are discussed.
