Effects of Water-Channel Attractions on Single-File Water Permeation Through Nanochannels

Abstract:Single-file transportation of water across narrow nanochannels such as carbon nanotubes has attracted much attention in recent years. Such permeation can be greatly affected by the water-channel interactions; despite some progress, this issue has not been fully explored. Herein we use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effects of water-channel attractions on occupancy, translational (transportation) and orientational dynamics of water inside narrow single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). We use SWNTs as the model nanochannels and change the strength of water-nanotube attractions to mimic the changes in the hydrophobicity/polarity of the nanochannel. We investigate the dependence of water occupancy inside SWNTs on the water-channel attraction and identify the corresponding threshold values for drying states, wetting-drying transition states, and stably wetting states. As the strength of water-channel attractions increases, water flow increases rapidly first, and then decreases gradually; the maximal flow occurs in the case where the nanochannel is predominately filled with the 1D water wire but with a small fraction of 'empty states', indicating that appropriate empty-filling (drying-wetting) switching can promote water permeation. This maximal flow is unexpected, since in traditional view, the stable and tight hydrogen-bonding network of the water wire is the prerequisite for high permeability of water. The underlying mechanism is discussed from an energetic perspective. In addition, the effect of water-channel attractions on reorientational dynamics of the water wire is studied, and a negative correlation between the flipping frequency of water wire and the water-channel attraction is observed. The underlying mechanism is interpreted in term of the axial total dipole moment of inner water molecules. This work would help to better understand the effects of water-channel attractions on wetting properties of narrow nanochannels, and on single-file water permeation through nanochannels, which might be helpful in designs of high-flux nanochannels.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to understand the characteristics of the one-dimensional Brownian motion of water columns inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at room temperature. It is found that the probability of 2–10-nm-long water columns sliding a distance larger than the energy barrier period inside 2–5-nm-diameter CNTs is greater than 50 %. Moreover, a conservative estimation gives that the thermal fluctuation-induced driving force exceeds the upper bound of the sliding energy barrier for a water column shorter than 117 nm. These findings imply that although water molecules form layered structures near the CNT inner walls, there is no critical interfacial shear stress to conquer, and water could slip inside CNTs under any given pressure drop due to the thermal activation at room temperature.

Abstract:Previous molecular dynamics (MD) studies have suggested relationships that fail to predict the measurements of water flow through membranes of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Through MD simulations of water transport over a flow rate range much wider than ever reported (0.002-1,400m/s) and use of flexible boundary condition, we discover a universal phenomenological logarithmic relationship between the CNT-water friction stress and flow rate, which is independent on tube chiralities, size and wetting properties. This logarithmic relationship is quantitatively in good agreement with the experimental observations. It thus provides a new basis for understanding the mechanisms of liquid slip at atomically smooth surfaces.

Abstract:Water molecules possess discontinuous properties in confined surroundings as compared to the bulk, their transport velocity shows a step change with the increase in the radius of hydrophobic carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Here, we report that the chain of water molecules in CNTs behaves as a "spring" owing to hydrogen bonding. Thus, the transport of water molecules in confined systems proceeds as a wave motion with eigen frequencies in the terahertz region which is determined by the CNT size. Water velocities derived from molecular dynamics (MD) fit well with the ones from finite element methods (FEM) on consideration of both the no-slip and slip boundary conditions for CNT diameters less than 1 nm and more than 1 nm, respectively. The present work helps clarify the features of mass and momentum transfers in confined surroundings, and provides perspectives for mass transfer applications.

Abstract:Water-flow in carbon nanotubes (CNT's) starkly contradicts classical fluid mechanics, with permeabilities that can exceed no-slip Haagen-Poiseuille predictions by two to five orders of magnitude. Semi-classical molecular dynamics accounts for enhanced flow-rates, that are attributed to curvature-dependent lattice mismatch. However, the steeper permeability-enhancement observed experimentally at $\sim$nm-size radii remains poorly understood, and suggests emergence of puzzling non-classical mechanisms. Here we address water-CNT friction from a quantum-mechanical perspective, in terms of water-energy loss upon phonon excitation. We find that combined weak water-phonon coupling and selection rules hinder water-CNT scattering, providing effective protection to water superflow, whereas comparison with a semiclassical theory evidences a friction increase that can exceed the quantum-mechanical prediction by more than two orders of magnitude. Quasi-frictionless flow up to sub-nm CNT's opens new pathways towards minimally-invasive trans-membrane cellular injections, single-water fluidics and efficient water filtration.
Nanoconfined Water Phase Transitions in Infinite Graphene Slits: Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Mean-Field Insights

Abstract:Recent experimental and computational studies have demonstrated that nanoconfinement profoundly alters the phase behavior of water, facilitating complex phase transitions at pressures and temperatures far lower than typically observed in bulk systems. When combined with adsorption, nanoconfinement substantially enhances water uptake, primarily due to condensation occurring at the onset of the isotherm curve-a phenomenon intimately related to the facilitated formation of hydrogen bond networks. In this study, we adopt a dual approach to investigate water confined within infinite graphene slits. Our Molecular Dynamics simulations reveal hysteresis across all investigated temperatures. Unlike in finite slits, where hysteresis arises due to surface tension effects at the edges, in the case of infinite slits, the hysteresis is the result of a genuine phase transition at the nanoscale. We analyze the spatial and orientational arrangements of the water molecules, demonstrating how the graphene surface promotes the formation of a hydrogen bond network in the adjacent water layers. The remarkably low pressure required for water uptake in this nano-environment is explained at the mean-field level using a simple interacting lattice model. This is attributed to the exponential dependence of the critical pressure on the adsorbate-adsorbent interaction.

Abstract:Understanding the slip behaviors on the graphene surfaces is crucial in the field of nanofluidics and nanofluids. The reported values of the slip length in the literature from both experimental measurements and simulations are quite scattered. The presence of low concentrations of functional groups may have a greater impact on the flow behavior than expected. Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we specifically investigated the influence of hydroxyl-functionalized graphene surfaces on the boundary slip, particularly the effects related to hydrogen bond dynamics. We observed that hydroxyl groups significantly hindered the sliding motion of neighboring water molecules. Hydrogen bonds can be found between hydroxyl groups and water molecules. During the flow process, these hydrogen bonds continuously form and break, resulting in the energy dissipation. We analyzed the energy balance under different driving forces and proposed a theoretical model to describe the slip length which also considers the influence of hydrogen bond dynamics. The effects of the driving force and the surface functional group concentration were also studied.

Abstract:Diffusion of single-file water confined in carbon nanotubes (CNT) has been studied extensively via molecular dynamics simulations in the literature. However, very often, the simulation results do not provide a satisfactory insight to the fundamental mechanism, failing to explain the experimental trend. Sometimes, simulation results are even contradictory to each other. In this work, we first summarize factors that affect the diffusion calculation of single-file water confined in narrow CNTs. In particular, we investigate how the roughness of the CNT model affects diffusion properties of the confined water. A transition of ballistic to Fickian diffusion shall be observable when water is confined in (6, 6) CNTs with roughness. Our simulation results also reveal the single-file diffusion mechanism of confined water when the CNT has significant roughness. This is because the single-file water molecules confined in smooth CNTs move in a collective way, while the motion becomes random in CNTs with roughness. In larger CNTs, even with the roughness change, only the Fickian type diffusion mechanism is observed. Our study provides a new insight into the argument on how confined water diffuses in narrow CNTs.

Abstract:Water transport through short single-walled (6, 6) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was investigated with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation at different temperatures. The water molecules under extreme confinement present a one-dimensional jagged pattern owing to hydrogen bonding, with the near-perfect alignment of the dipole orientations. CNTs ending with dangling bonds can promote water dissociation near the entrance and the occurrence of dipole flipping along the water wire at high temperatures, accompanied by the formation of D defects and L defects in the hydrogen-bond network. In contrast, dissociation of water molecules rarely takes place if the dangling bonds at the ends of the CNTs are terminated with H atoms. Angular jumps of water molecules are commonplace inside the narrow CNTs, implying a low-energy barrier for hydrogen-bond exchange among water molecules in narrow CNTs. The simulation results demonstrate the high activity of dangling bonds at the ends of short CNTs, accompanying passivation processes and their profound impact on water structure and transport, which is important for diverse technological applications.

Abstract:Effect of the carbon nanotube (CNT) channel length on the water flow through the CNT is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The water flow is found to decay with the channel length (similar to 1/N(2.3), N is the number of carbon rings along the nanotube axis), much faster than that predicted by a previous continuous-time random walk (CTRW) model (similar to 1/N). This unexpected decay rate of flow is found to result from the weakening of the correlation of the concerted motion of the water molecules inside the CNT. An improved CTRW model is then proposed by taking into account of this effect. Meanwhile, the diffusion constant of water molecules inside CNTs with various lengths is found to be relatively invariant, which results in a relatively constant hopping rate.

Abstract:This article discusses the way the standard description of capillary filling dynamics has to be modified to account for liquid/solid slip in nanometric pores. It focuses in particular on the case of a large slip length compared to the pore size. It is shown that the liquid viscosity does not play a role, and that the flow is only controlled by the friction coefficient of the liquid at the wall. Moreover in the Washburn regime, the filling velocity does not depend on the tube radius. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations suggest that this standard description fails to describe the early stage of capillary filling of carbon nanotubes by water, since viscous dissipation at the tube entrance must be taken into account.

Abstract:Using a Coarse-grained Molecular Dynamics (CMD) approach we study the apparent nonlinear dynamics of water molecules filling/emptying carbon nanotubes as a function of system parameters. Different levels of the pore hydrophobicity give rise to tubes that are empty, water-filled, or fluctuate between these two long-lived metastable states. The corresponding coarse-grained free energy surfaces and their hysteretic parameter dependence are explored by linking MD to continuum fixed point and bifurcation algorithms. The results are validated through equilibrium MD simulations.

Abstract:Water slip at solid surfaces is important for a wide range of micro-/nanofluidic applications. While it is known that water slip behavior depends on surface functionalization, how it impacts the molecular level dynamics and mass transport at the interface is still not thoroughly understood. In this paper, we use nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the slip behavior of water confined between gold surfaces functionalized by self-assembled monolayer (SAM) molecules with different polar functional groups. We observe a positive-to-negative slip transition from hydrophobic to hydrophilic SAM functionalizations, which is found to be related to the stronger interfacial interaction between water molecules and more hydrophilic SAM molecules. The stronger interaction increases the surface friction and local viscosity, making water slip more difficult. More hydrophilic functionalization also slows down the interfacial water relaxation and leads to more pronounced water trapping inside the SAM layer, both of which impede water slip. The results from this work will provide useful insights into the understanding of the water slip at functionalized surfaces and design guidelines for various applications.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Friction and Energy Dissipation between Carbon Nanotube and Graphite Substrate

Abstract:Friction and energy dissipation in commensurate and incommensurate contacts between SWCNT (10,10) and graphite substrate were investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The SWCNT (10,10) was first relaxed to the equilibrium state, then a force was applied along the lateral direction for a period of time to set the nanotube into motion. After the applied force being removed, the carbon nanotube moved in relative to the substrate in decelerating speed until it came to rest. In commensuration case, firstly carbon nanotube slides on graphite, then switches between sliding and rolling due to the periodic change of atomic configuration during the motion. Lateral force on carbon nanotube also revealed periodic nature during sliding period. In incommensurate case, SWCNT (10,10) slided on graphite during the whole process, and lateral force was opposite to the motion. The study on a pair of interacting atoms in relative motion indicates that approach-separation in vertical direction between atoms of carbon nanotube and graphite leads to a broken of symmetry in lateral force, which may relate to the origin of friction. In commensurate and incommensurate case, interacting forces between carbon nanotube and graphite are both repulsive, and atomic collisions resulted in energy dissipation in the cases under study. Friction-velocity curves of SWCNT (10,10) show linear distribution, which confirms that viscous dissipation dominanted the dynamics process.

Abstract:The slippage effect at the interface between a confined fluid and the surface around it has a potential application in microfluidic and nanofluidic devices. To investigate the slippage effect of fluid on superhydrophobic surfaces, a series of rheological experiments are carried out for superhydrophobic surfaces coated with carbon nanotube forests (CNTs), which are prepared by the chemical vapor deposition method (CVD). The results show that such surfaces can create certain slippage effects for a fluid flowing over them and that the slip length is in accordance with the theoretical prediction as well as the value measured through other experimental methods. As the same trend is observed for both the theoretical and experimental slip lengths, the theoretical model can be used to optimize the superhydrophobic surfaces for the slippage effect or drag reduction. The superhydrophobic surfaces with considerable slippage effects have broad potential application in micro-and nanofluidic devices or biodevices to solve the fluid resistance problem.
