Nevertheless, a series of complicated factors affect Chinese ethnic minority EFL learners’ English pronunciation learning. The paper adopts an in-depth interview method among Yi ethnic minority EFL learners in Leshan Normal University, and analyzes the main factors that affect learners’ English pronunciation learning. Finally, the paper draws a conclusion to trigger the further study.

Abstract:There have been many studies concerning Chinese dialects influence on the learning of English sounds. However, it is widely believed that Chinese dialect speakers always face greater difficulties when learning English than Mandarin speakers, which is rebutted through this research, to some degree. The study tests the English repeating ability of speakers native to Wenzhou Wu, a dialect with a significant difference, and native to Tianjin Mandarin, which is very similar to Putonghua. The study compares the phonology of these two dialects and English and assumes that both of these dialects influence the acquisition of certain sounds of English. L1 speakers of these two dialects, who have not been exposed to English before, are asked to repeat the recording of English words, and through phonetic analysis of the material, we can find the difference in these candidates ability to acquire these sounds. The results show that the two branches of the Chinese language are found to both facilitate and obstacle native speakers SLA in different aspects.

Abstract:Chinese speech synthesis refers to the technology that machines transform human speech signals into corresponding texts or commands through recognition and understanding. This paper combines the classic VAD and GSM VAD1 algorithm simulations, improves on the above two algorithms to recognize and collect speech, and analyzes their Chinese proficiency by amplifying the signal through a filter, in order to study the adulthood of Zhengzhou University in Southeast Asian students (mother tongues are Indonesian and Thai) as the research objects, to explore the relationship between the Chinese phonetic proficiency and the acquisition motivation of Southeast Asian students. This article combines algorithm and language disciplines. According to the results of Praat and SPSS: 55-80 points account for 70%, 55 points below 20% and 80 points above 10%, we find that intrinsic motivation plays a role in CSL acquisition, a vital role. Intrinsic motivation can help mature learners from Southeast Asia to acquire Chinese better and better. The earlier you learn Chinese, the higher your motivation, and the easier it is to set your Chinese learning goals. The greater the enthusiasm for learning Chinese, the better the Chinese scores (such as HSK test scores and Chinese phonetic test scores). Therefore, the Chinese proficiency of international students has a great relationship with their interest in Chinese language, that is, the greater the interest in Chinese, the stronger their motivation to learn, and the Chinese proficiency will be very good.

Abstract:Recent years have seen a rapid growth of older Chinese people going abroad, either visiting their relatives or taking on a long-term trip. These older adults find it is necessary to learn some English words to help them blend in local environment. However, a lot of them encounter challenges of memorizing the pronunciation of English words via using English phonetic alphabet, because many have little English learning experience. Their tongues had never been trained to pronounce English words in their childhood, and it is so difficult for them to remember a new pronunciation system and change their pronunciation habit. So they tend to memorize the pronunciation of words by referring its sound to their acquired pinyin system—a phonology system for Chinese characters. This inspires the author to think it may be, in a way, meaningful to exam the feasibility of applying such approach in teaching older Chinese adult beginners for specific purpose. Hence, the proposal of designing a controlled experiment to explore this teaching method. By offering a tentative research design, the paper provides predicative analysis and implications on studying the L1 play in L2 pronunciation acquisition in second language classroom.

Abstract:Very limited research has explored the English pronunciation and self-concept among EFL non-English major learners in China. Therefore, this study investigated the level of Chinese EFL non-English major learners’ self-concept about their level of English pronunciation, how they self-evaluated their English pronunciation, and the pronunciation problems they encountered. A convergent mixed-method approach was utilized to collect data. A sample of 392 Chinese EFL learners from different universities responded to an English pronunciation questionnaire about self-concept, where results showed that Chinese EFL non-English major learners had a very low self-concept of English pronunciation. Meanwhile, another sample of 100 students took an English pronunciation test and responded to the English pronunciation self-evaluation form. Results demonstrated that 82% of the participants scored 59/100 and below in the English pronunciation test. As for the self-evaluation of English, also 82% self-evaluated their English as either average or poor. Moreover, a focused group discussion with five EFL teachers showed that among the pronunciation problems faced by Chinese EFL learners included: a) adding or omitting extra sounds, b) problems with phonemes, c) confusion of vowels and consonants, and d) problems with suprasegmental phonemes. It is hoped that this study would provide some implications for putting forward countermeasures to improve the EFL pronunciation among EFL Chinese learners.

Abstract:In today's globalized world, English language proficiency has gained significant importance. However, the emphasis on exam-oriented education in Chinese junior high schools has led to a neglect of students' comprehensive English communication skills, particularly oral speaking abilities. In this research paper, I investigate effective strategies and interventions to enhance English-speaking proficiency among Chinese junior high school students. Through synthesizing existing research, the study aims to identify successful approaches while highlighting gaps for future research. My literature review highlights the critical role of pronunciation in oral English learning. Despite its importance, English pronunciation is often neglected in Chinese education due to the prevailing focus on written test scores. Existing research has explored numerous ways to improve English pronunciation, including incorporating music and utilizing Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) systems. Moreover, my paper addresses the challenges junior high school students face in developing English speaking skills, such as limited oral English classes and a lack of appropriate teaching materials. Students' lack of interest and anxiety toward verbal English learning further contribute to the problem. To address these issues, this study proposes two main interventions: utilizing music as an auxiliary method in teaching spoken English and employing dubbing apps in English teaching and after-class assignments. Additionally, role-playing activities are suggested to enhance students' enthusiasm for oral English learning. Through interviews with English teachers, this research aims to shed light on effective approaches to improve oral English proficiency among Chinese junior high school students and provide practical insights for language educators.
A Study on English Phonetic Learning by Senior High School Students in China

Abstract:This present study investigated the relationship between Chinese senior high school students’ mastery of pronunciation features and their speaking fluency. Sixty-six second-year Chinese senior high school students participated in this study. The first instrument measured subjects’ mastery of pronunciation features consisting of six categories: vowels, consonants, linking, assimilation, intonation and stress while the second one assessed their three aspects of speaking fluency by reading a text: pause, repetition and speech rate. The results of data analysis showed most subjects in this study performed well on segmental features, but their performance on supra-segmental features were weak. Moreover, subjects from the high supra-segmental group outperformed low supra-segmental group in the uses of stress, intonation and linking. Based on the results, employing consciousness-raising activities for teaching pronun- ciation were suggested for improving students’ pronunciation skills.

Ethnography in language planning and policy research. In F. M. Hult & D. C. Johnson (Eds.), Research methods in language policy and planning: A practical guide (pp. 81–93). Malden, MA: Wiley Blackwell] to investigate how Uyghur students viewed their English learning and how the university responded to macro-level national language planning decisions to foster social harmony. Our findings revealed that the minority students were marginalized in their study of English and disadvantaged compared to Han students. Consequently, we argue for a consideration of the impact of power inequalities in relation to English language learning. Such a critical perspective entails (1) acknowledging the disadvantaged position from which these minority students began their formal education because English was a third language for them [Yang, J. (2005). English as a third language among China’s ethnic minorities. International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, 8(6), 552–567] and (2) recognizing that access to English education is not equitable because students who attend schools in economically developed provinces such as Jiangsu are more likely to get a better education in English than those from a less developed province such as Xinjiang.

Challenges in Multi-Language Pronunciation Teaching: A Cross-Linguistic Study of Chinese Students’ Perception of Voiced and Voiceless Stops

Abstract:This article reports on a cross-linguistic study of 58 Chinese students’ perception of voiced and voiceless stops in their third language (L3). The participants were Japanese, Russian, or Spanish major students in a Chinese university, who were beginner learners of these languages but who had all learned English as their second language (L2) for over 10 years. The purpose of this study was to investigate the L3 learners’ perceptual differences in the stop categories, and analyze the effects of the learners’ multi-language background on their perception of L3 stops. Results from the perception experiment showed that: 1) the value and range of voice onset time (VOT) play an essential role in Chinese students’ perception of voiceless stops; and 2) the pre-voicing during closure is the key to Chinese students’ perception of voiced stops. We attribute their difficulty in perceiving L3 voiceless stops to the similarity in the phonemic range of voiceless stops between the learners’ L3 and their L1 and L2, as this leads to confusion in perception. On the other hand, the dissimilarity between L3 voiced stops and those of L1 and L2 is conducive to the students’ perception of L3 voiced stops. Findings from this study provide empirical evidence for the effect of similarity and dissimilarity in speech sounds as proposed in earlier phonology acquisition theories, and they can also inform the pedagogy of multi-language education.

Abstract:The native language will have a negative transfer on the acquisition of second language. Dialects, as a branch of Chinese, also have an influence on English acquisition. The perception of consonants is one of the important foundations of English learning. This study will adopt discrimination as an experimental method to investigate whether there is a significant difference in the influence of different dialects on the perception of English consonants. Three major dialects in Jiangsu province will be taken as a study case to verify the hypothesis that there is a significant difference on the perception of English consonants in different dialects. This study will fill the gap in the overall research on the impact of three major dialects in Jiangsu province on the perception of English consonants, help English language learners with dialect background to reduce the influence of dialects on them and provide some teaching key points to teachers, especially for English language learners in Jiangsu province.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the results of standard HSK tests and concludes that advanced learners with a knowledge of Chinese characters suffer from severe unevenness in acquiring fluency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The results of high, medium and low scorers show that their listening comprehension was significantly and rapidly improved. The oral ability was beginning to improve but the improvement seemed to stop soon after and remained slow. The low scorers showed marked weakness in reading. Apparently, their weak overall performance kept their reading comprehension from improving. Thus, we offer the following suggestions: 1) Enhance advanced oral training, focusing on fluency, appropriateness and paragraph making. 2) Emphasize the training to gain fast reading skills for lower level learners, starting with exercises on identifying differences of meaning, grammar patterns and paragraph building.

Abstract:This paper conducts acoustic experiments from a signal processing perspective, to examine the English “-/a/ /C_ (C)” narrow focus syllable processing strategy of Chinese L2 learners of English. The research discusses OQ and SQ as key phonatory acoustic parameters. A result of “tight” Chinese CV structure in contrast with a “loose” English CV(C) structure obtained from our previous study has been verified in the current research. Male speakers control their glottis to a much lower position to lengthen the vocal tract and produce more energy, which is represented by higher SQ, for a narrow focus token. The matrix distance reflects L1's traces in the interlanguage system.

Abstract:<p>The increasing attention on Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) pronunciation instruction gives us an opportunity to look into the current directions of teaching CFL and the specific instructional pronunciation strategies employed by CFL teachers. This paper offers a review of empirical evidence on the use and impact of instructional pronunciation strategies in the CFL field from 1980 to 2019. Our findings reveal that: (1) controlled segmental-based strategies—such as comparative strategies, listening, and repeating strategies—are used widely and effectively to improve pronunciation of Chinese initials and finals; (2) suprasegmental-based strategies, especially computer-assisted strategies, largely improve CFL students' tone accuracy; and (3) the validity of assessments in quantitative studies needs to be further developed by including comparative groups, making tests before and after instructions, and involving discourse assessment contents.</p>

Abstract:Background: Chinese/Mandarin language instruction to undergraduate students from non-Chinese speaking countries has become a topic of increasing interest, driven by China's influential role in global political and economic dynamics. With Mandarin being the language spoken by approximately 70% of Chinese speakers, it is not only taught within China but also in institutions around the world. While teaching any second or foreign language presents unique challenges, the specific challenges faced in Mandarin language education have not received comprehensive scrutiny, prompting the need for further investigation. Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to explore the challenges associated with teaching and learning Mandarin from the perspectives of non-native Mandarin language teachers. By adopting a qualitative (phenomenological) research approach, we aimed to uncover the multifaceted challenges that confront both educators and learners in the context of Mandarin language instruction. Methodology: The research methodology employed for this study involved the use of semi-structured interviews conducted with 15 Mandarin language teachers, who were chosen through theoretical sampling. These interviews were transcribed into text files and subsequently subjected to qualitative data analysis, which was facilitated by the use of MAQDA software. This approach allowed us to identify and categorize the various challenges and problems encountered in the teaching and learning of Mandarin. Findings: The research findings revealed a range of challenges and problems experienced in Mandarin language education. These challenges were grouped into two primary thematic categories: psycho-linguistic and educational challenges. The linguistic challenges are deeply rooted in the distinctive features of the Mandarin language, presenting obstacles that necessitate innovative teaching strategies and materials. Educational challenges extend beyond native speaker proficiency, emphasizing the requirement for a comprehensive pedagogical skill set among instructors. Implications: The implications of this research extend to various stakeholders in the field of Chinese/Mandarin language education, including policymakers, educators, curriculum designers, and learners. Understanding the linguistic, educational, and psychological challenges can inform the development of more effective teaching methods, curriculum design, and motivation-enhancing strategies, ultimately promoting a more successful and engaging Mandarin language learning experience for non-native speakers.

Abstract:We evaluated how right- and the left-temporal lobe activation of first (1st LR), second (2ndLR), and third (3rdLR) level readers (N = 60; Age = 6–9 years) varied with reading level, word characteristics, and cognitive abilities by using electroencephalogram measurements while the children read high-frequency/high-imageability, high-frequency/low-imageability, and nonsense words. The ANOVA showed significant interaction effects: 1stLR had greater right-hemispheric activation than 3rdLR, who had greater left-hemispheric activation; for nonsense words, 1stLR had lower left-hemisphere activation than that of 2ndLR and 3rdLR. The electroencephalogram (EEG) measure of hemispheric asymmetry indicated a developmental effect on lateralized activity in the temporal lobes of beginning readers during word reading.

Abstract:Phonics instruction, originating in English-speaking countries, has gained considerable momentum in China, both within and beyond formal classroom settings. Despite its popularity, certain limiting factors arise when implementing phonics instruction for native Chinese speakers. These factors include the lack of prior exposure to lexical phonological-semantic relations and the underdeveloped perception of English phonetic categories. In response to these limitations, targeted instructional strategies are proposed. The analysis underscores the imperative of acknowledging these limiting factors when incorporating phonics instruction for native Chinese speakers, as well as the necessity of devising tailored instruction, rather than directly adopting instructional approaches and materials from English-speaking nations. Such efforts hold the potential to yield significant benefits in enhancing the effectiveness of English phonics education for English language learners.
