Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), mainly synthesized by the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased monomer for high-performance polymers. In this work, we have a comprehensive investigation on the rapid and highly selective oxidation process of HMF to FDCA in acetic acid (HAc) with Co/Mn/Br catalyst and air as the oxidant. It was found that both aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups of HMF could be first oxidized in the sequential oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was the main oxidation intermediate. Apart from the side reaction of HMF overoxidation to COx (CO and CO2) and HMF condensation to polymers, a small part of HMF will be further oxidized to maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) via the ring-opening reactions under severe conditions because of the instability of furan ring. To reduce the side reactions and maximize the FDCA yield, the effects of temperature, pressure, substrate solvent ratio, catalyst composition and concentration, and water concentration on the main reactions and side reactions of the HMF oxidation were systematically evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the selectivity of FDCA reached 92% with the total conversion of HMF in less than 20 min at a high mass ratio of substrate and solvent (1/9), and the purity of FDCA exceeded 99.8%. The experimental results provide a great reference and inspiration for the optimization of the HMF oxidation process and the large-scale production of FDCA.

Abstract:In this contribution, readily available 5-methyl furfural (MF) derived from biomass was used as an excellent substitute of the chemically unstable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) for preparing the commercial precursor 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). MF was catalytically oxidized by air into FDCA in acetic acid over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts at 130-170 degrees C. It was found that both the substitute reactivity and the ring chemical stability have a remarkable impact on the yield of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The effects of reaction temperature, pressure, catalyst composition and concentration, water concentration in the solvent, and substrate/solvent mass ratio on both the main reaction and the side reaction were investigated systematically and thoroughly using HPLC and an online tail gas monitoring system. Under optimized conditions, the oxidation of MF gave 100% conversion of MF and 75.8% yield of FDCA with 99.6% purity. It was also proven that the addition of 200 ppm cerium could work well at low temperatures (130-140 degrees C) for enhancing FDCA selectivity via suppressing the side reactions.

Abstract:2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (2,5-FDCA) produced from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a promising renewable alternative to terephthalic acid. In this work, we prepared a Cu-Ni bimetallic catalyst with a CuNi(OH)(2) structure by incipient wetness impregnation. This catalyst gave a 9.2 mA cm(-2) current density for 5-HMF oxidation at 1.45 V vs RHE. Finally, 100 % conversion of HMF with 93.3 % yield of 2,5-FDCA was obtained.

Abstract:Cobalt-ceria binary oxide nanojunctions were prepared by a sol-gel method with various chelating agents. The formed interfaces among CeO2 and Co3O4 can promote the generation of nucleophilic •O2- from O2 and then tune the catalytic oxidizability of the as-prepared CoCe nanojunctions. Given the results of HMF oxidations, malic acid as a complexing agent during the preparation process of the cobalt-ceria binary oxide nanojunctions can lead to a good catalytic performance on HMF oxidations to FDCA, and a remarkable FDCA selectivity of 92.3% and almost 100% HMF conversion were obtained at 110 °C under O2 and alkali conditions. By comparing the catalytic performance of the nanojunctions and physical mixing of cobalt-ceria binary oxide on oxidations of HMF, 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HFCA), and 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA), the interfaces intrinsically enhanced the FDCA yield dominantly via boosting the HMF oxidation to HFCA with •O2- during the stepwise oxidation of HMF to FDCA. It can be enlightening that the introduction of the active sites for transforming O2 to •O2- to promote the transformation of HMF into HFCA is the key to boosting the selective aerobic oxidation of HMF to FDCA.

Abstract:Biomass conversion offers an efficient approach to alleviate the energy and environmental issues. Electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has attracted tremendous attention in the latest few years for the mild synthesis conditions and high conversion efficiency to obtain 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), but there still remain problems such as limited yield, short cycle life, and ambiguous reaction mechanism. Despite many reviews highlighting a variety of electrocatalysts for electrochemical oxidation of HMF, a detailed discussion of the structural modulation of catalyst and the underlying catalytic mechanism is still lacking. We herein provide a comprehensive summary of the recent development of electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA, particularly focusing on the mechanism studies as well as the advanced strategies developed to regulate the structure and optimize the performance of the electrocatalysts, including heterointerface construction, defect engineering, single-atom engineering, and in situ reconstruction. Experimental characterization techniques and theoretical calculation methods for mechanism and active site studies are elaborated, and challenges and future directions of electrochemical oxidation of HMF are also prospected. This review will provide guidance for designing advanced catalysts and deepening the understanding of the reaction mechanism beneath electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation of furfural(FF)into 2-methylfuran(MF)is a significant biomass utilization route.However,designing efficient and stable non-noble metal catalyst is still a huge challenge.Herein,we reported the N,O co-doped carbon anchored with Co nanoparticles(Co-SFB)synthesized by employing the organic ligands with the target heteroatoms.Raman,electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR),electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)characterizations showed that the co-doping of N and O heteroatoms in the carbon support endows Co-SFB with enriched lone pair electrons,fast electron transfer ability,and strong metal-support interaction.These electronic properties resulted in strong FF adsorption as well as lower apparent reaction activation energy.At last,the obtained N,O co-doped Co/C catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity(nearly 100 mol％FF conver-sion and 94.6 mol％MF yield)and stability for in-situ dehydrogenation of FF into MF.This N,O co-doping strategy for the synthesis of highly efficient catalytic materials with controllable electronic state will pro-vide an excellent opportunity to better understand the structure-function relationship.

Abstract:The electrochemical production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is receiving growing attention. The FDCA-based polyethylene 2,5-furan dicarboxylate (PEF) polymer is a green candidate for substituting polyethylene terephthalate. This work demonstrated a highly efficient CoB/g-C3N4 nanosheet on the surface of the nickel foam as an electrode for the HMF electrooxidation reaction. Electrolysis at a constant potential combined with liquid chromatography showed the formation of FDCA with a yield of 97% with an excellent faradaic efficiency of near 95%. CoB/g-C3N4 achieved a current density of 20 mA cm−2 for HMF oxidation in 1.0 M KOH with 10 mM HMF at 1.37 V vs. RHE before the competing oxygen evolution reaction. The electrocatalyst was effectively reused up to three times without compromising efficiency. This work demonstrates a cheap and active electrocatalyst material for the electrochemical formation of FDCA from HMF and gives perception into the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) was examined as an alternative to thermocatalytic methods in which two-dimensional (2D) cobalt-metal-organic framework (Co-MOF, ZIF-L-Co) nanoplate arrays were prepared on nickel foam (NF) and then transformed into hierarchical porous Co3O4 nanostructures by chemical etching and low temperature annealing to form electrode materials. Hierarchical porous nanoarrays formed during synthesis enlarged the surface area of the as-prepared catalysts introduced a large number of defects and exposed active sites leading to reduced charge diffusion, improved mass transfer and efficient HMF oxidation. Co3O4/NF electrode materials were able to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm-2 at an overpotential of 105 mV in 1 M KOH with 10 mM HMF, which was reduced by 175 mV compared with water oxidation. Electrocatalytic oxidation experiments afforded 100 % HMF conversion and 96.7 % FDCA yields with a minimum 96.5 % faradaic efficiency at 1.43 V vs RHE. The proposed MOF-structured synthesis method fundamentally reduces charge diffusion, improves mass transfer of electrodes and is generally applicable to fabrication of hierarchical porous nanostructured materials.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has attracted much attention recently, as FDCA could be used as a polymer precursor to produce recyclable bio-based polymers. But most studies focused on the design of noble metal catalysts for the efficient oxidation of HMF to FDCA, here, non-noble metal catalysts, MnOₓ–CeO₂ mixed oxides, were prepared by a co-precipitation method and used in the direct aerobic oxidation of HMF to FDCA. As high as 91% yield of FDCA was achieved over the MC-6 (Mn/Ce = 6) catalyst and the catalyst can be reused five times without much loss of catalytic activity, this is the best result for non-noble metal catalyzed HMF oxidation to FDCA in the aqueous phase. Structural analysis revealed that surface Mn⁴⁺ ions are the active sites and play key roles for the oxidation of HMF in the absence of noble metals. In addition, the reaction mechanism over the MnOₓ–CeO₂ catalyst was also proposed based on the synergistic interaction between Mn and Ce oxides.

Abstract:Simultaneous production of value-added 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and H2 from the integrated 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation and hydrogen evolution reaction by electrocatalysis has drawn tremendous attention due to the significantly improved energy efficiency. However, HMF is not thermally and chemically stable enough to often cause heavy degradation, impeding its storage and industrialization. In this work, a more stable furan molecule, 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF), was employed as the reaction substrate into the coupling system for the first time. By means of facile electrodeposition and subsequent oxidative activation, the standing CoOOH nanosheet electrocatalyst was fabricated to realize a complete BHMF conversion with 90.2% FDCA yield and 100% current efficiency for H2 evolution. The reaction path and apparent activation energies were therefore discussed. Scalable properties and electrochemical durability of CoOOH were evaluated in a continuous flow reactor to harvest gram-level solid FDCA, highlighting the prospect of green coupling electrolysis for industrial application.

Abstract:Generally, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is used as feedstock to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Whereas, its poor stability in alkaline environment results in low yield of FDCA. By contrast, 5-[(formyloxy)methyl]furfural (FMF), a novel platform compound derived from HMF, with higher thermal and alkaline stability than HMF, is more promising to replace HMF as substrate for the production of FDCA. In this study, FMF was successfully converted into FDCA over MoCuOx by using NaClO as oxidant, undergoing 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) and 5-hydroxymethylfuran-2-carboxylic acid (HMFCA) as intermediates. Under optimization condition (30 min, 40 °C), 100% yield of FDCA was obtained. Furthermore, it was also demonstrated that the yield of FDCA up to 90% was gained in 5 wt % FMF concentration. Higher oxygen species mobility and lattice oxygen ratio endowed MoCuOx excellent catalytic activity. The synergy of Mo and Cu species in MoCuOx ensured an efficient conversion of HMF to FDCA through synergistic redox couple of Mo6+/Mo5+ and Cu2+/Cu+.

Abstract:In this work, highly efficient and inexpensive CoO and CoO-NiO nanostructures were synthesized by facile electrodeposition technique for the selective and efficient oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The prepared CoO and CoO-NiO effectively oxidized the biomass derived HMF to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) at lower onset potential value of 1.32 V RHE and 1.23 V RHE , respectively. The CoO-NiO nanostructures achieved complete HMF conversion with 99 % FDCA yield and 99.2 % Faradaic efficiency at 1.38 V RHE . The performed study revealed that the addition of Ni into CoO-NiO have had a significant impact on oxidizing activity by lowering the charge transfer resistance and enhancing the electrochemical surface area. As per our knowledge, this is for the first time, a non-precious bimetallic oxides bearing significant efficiency have been developed for vigorous production of desired FDCA. The inexpensive Co-Ni based bimetallic oxide may be demonstrated as a potent material for highly selective and effective electrocatalytic biomass valorization.

Abstract:Abstract5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) serves as a versatile platform compound bridging the realms of biomass resources and the fine chemicals industry, with its selective oxidation holding significant value. In this study, nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NDPC) materials were synthesized by using urea as the nitrogen source and sucrose as the carbon source via a hard-template approach. These materials were subsequently employed in the selective oxidation of HMF to produce 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) under specific oxygen pressure conditions. The morphology and structure of NDPC were elucidated through SEM, XPS and XRD analyses. The impact of varying the molar ratio of N/C and nitrogen sources on the catalyst was examined, as well as the effects of different reaction conditions on HMF conversion and DFF selectivity were investigated. The results demonstrated an impressive 81.0% HMF conversion and a remarkable 97.9% DFF selectivity under the suitable conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibited consistent catalytic performance throughout the recycling experiments.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:A bimetallic catalyst CuCoOx was developed for the efficient production of 2, 5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) by the catalytic oxidation 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) using NaClO as oxidant. CuCoOx exhibited remarkable catalytic activity and exceptional stability. Under optimized conditions, complete conversion of HMF, as well as the 96 % FDCA yield was obtained at ambient temperature within 15 min. The oxidation of HMF toward FDCA proceeds though 5-hydroxymethyl-2- furoic acid (HMFCA) and 5-Formyl-2-furoic acid (FFCA) as key intermediates in sequence. The synergistic interaction between Cu and Co species boosted oxygen vacancy, enhanced oxygen species mobility, and created an appropriate amount of strong acid/basic sites, improving catalytic activity of CuCoOx. The oxidation of -C-OH in HMF was a rate-determining step. The involvement of lattice oxygen was proved to be crucial in facilitating the whole oxidation process from HMF toward FDCA. Combining reaction kinetics and oxidation mechanism studies, the oxygen vacancy density on the surface CuCoOx was identified as the oxidation rate controlling factor during the whole HMF oxidation process toward FDCA.

Abstract:In this paper, the latest progress in the preparation of FDCA by the electrochemical oxidation of hydroxymethylfurfural is reviewed. The main work focuses on the reaction mechanism, catalyst design strategies, and the integrated system of proper cathodic coupling reduction reactions (inorganic/organic). It is hoped to serve as guidance for the identification and resolution of the electrochemical oxidation of nucleophile oxidation reaction. Catalytic conversion of biomass‐based platform chemicals is one of the significant approaches to utilize renewable biomass resources. 2,5‐Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), obtained by an electrocatalytic oxidation of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), has attracted extensive attention due to the potential of replacing terephthalic acid to synthesize high‐performance polymeric materials for commercialization. In the present work, the pH‐dependent reaction pathways and factors influencing the degree of functional group oxidation are first discussed. Then the reaction mechanism of HMF oxidation is further elucidated using the representative examples. In addition, the emerging catalyst design strategies (defects, interface engineering) used in HMF oxidation are generalized, and structure–activity relationships between the abovementioned strategies and catalysts performance are analyzed. Furthermore, cathode pairing reactions, such as hydrogen evolution reaction, CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), oxygen reduction reaction, and thermodynamically favorable organic reactions to lower the cell voltage of the electrolysis system, are discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of the electrochemical oxidation of HMF for FDCA are presented, focusing on deeply investigated reaction mechanism, coupling reaction, reactor design, and downstream product separation/purification.
Chemocatalytic oxidation of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural into 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid over nickel cobalt oxide

Abstract:The present study reports the synthesis, characterization, and application of NiCo bimetallic catalysts to produce 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) via the oxidation of bio‐renewable 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). FDCA is a biopolymer precursor and a potential replacement for terephthalic acid (TPA). The catalysts were synthesized via the co‐precipitation method in different molar ratios of NiCo, followed by calcination in a muffle furnace. As a result, the complete conversion of HMF and a maximum 84.89% FDCA yield was measured at 50 °C in 50 minutes in the presence of NiCo(3:1) catalyst. In addition, effect reaction parameters, including catalyst amount, temperature, time, base, and oxidant amount on the FDCA yield, were studied, and the process was optimized. The NiCo(3:1) catalyst showed a negligible loss in activity for at least five cycles. The higher catalytic activity and stability are attributed to the synergistic effect of bimetallic catalysts, such as higher lattice oxygen. Accordingly, the catalyst was characterized using BET, XRD, H2‐TPR, CO2‐TPD, HR‐TEM, and XPS to correlate their properties and activity. The reaction products were analyzed quantitatively using HPLC and qualitatively using HR‐MS.

Abstract:In the process of air oxidation of (benzyl-) alcohols, aldehydes, amines and bio-furans derivates, soluble alkali is often needed to guarantee the oxidation rate and selectivity of desired products. The addition of soluble alkali results in high cost for following product purification and generation of vast low-valued salts. The slow kinetics of air oxidation under non-alkali condition becomes the key to solve this problem. In the preparation of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) by non-basic catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), the oxidation of 5-formyl-2-furoic acid (FFCA) to FDCA is the rate-determining step. In this work, it is hypothesized that the O2 activation pathway and generated oxidation species can be regulated by rationally design of the metal atoms coordination structure and the electronic structure in catalytic centers, and thus promoting the oxidation of FFCA to FDCA. Based on this, FeCoNiCuPt high entropy alloy catalyst supported over activate carbon (HEA/C) was prepared. Catalytic results show that HEA/C own high catalytic activity and FDCA selectivity in the non-basic catalytic oxidation of HMF in water. Free radical quenching experiments suggest that free radical maybe involved in this process. This work shows that it is a feasible strategy to increase the oxidation rate and desired product selectivity by rational fabrication of catalytic center atomic structure.
