Abstract:Abstract Developing affordable and light high-temperature materials alternative to Ni-base superalloys has significantly increased the efforts in designing advanced ferritic superalloys. However, currently developed ferritic superalloys still exhibit low high-temperature strengths, which limits their usage. Here we use a CALPHAD-based high-throughput computational method to design light, strong, and low-cost high-entropy alloys for elevated-temperature applications. Through the high-throughput screening, precipitation-strengthened lightweight high-entropy alloys are discovered from thousands of initial compositions, which exhibit enhanced strengths compared to other counterparts at room and elevated temperatures. The experimental and theoretical understanding of both successful and failed cases in their strengthening mechanisms and order-disorder transitions further improves the accuracy of the thermodynamic database of the discovered alloy system. This study shows that integrating high-throughput screening, multiscale modeling, and experimental validation proves to be efficient and useful in accelerating the discovery of advanced precipitation-strengthened structural materials tuned by the high-entropy alloy concept.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys are solid solutions of multiple principal elements that are capable of reaching composition and property regimes inaccessible for dilute materials. Discovering those with valuable properties, however, too often relies on serendipity, because thermodynamic alloy design rules alone often fail in high-dimensional composition spaces. We propose an active learning strategy to accelerate the design of high-entropy Invar alloys in a practically infinite compositional space based on very sparse data. Our approach works as a closed-loop, integrating machine learning with density-functional theory, thermodynamic calculations, and experiments. After processing and characterizing 17 new alloys out of millions of possible compositions, we identified two high-entropy Invar alloys with extremely low thermal expansion coefficients around 2 × 10 −6 per degree kelvin at 300 kelvin. We believe this to be a suitable pathway for the fast and automated discovery of high-entropy alloys with optimal thermal, magnetic, and electrical properties.

Abstract:Alloying has long been used to confer desirable properties to materials. Typically, it involves the addition of relatively small amounts of secondary elements to a primary element. For the past decade and a half, however, a new alloying strategy that involves the combination of multiple principal elements in high concentrations to create new materials called high-entropy alloys has been in vogue. The multi-dimensional compositional space that can be tackled with this approach is practically limitless, and only tiny regions have been investigated so far. Nevertheless, a few high-entropy alloys have already been shown to possess exceptional properties, exceeding those of conventional alloys, and other outstanding high-entropy alloys are likely to be discovered in the future. Here, we review recent progress in understanding the salient features of high-entropy alloys. Model alloys whose behaviour has been carefully investigated are highlighted and their fundamental properties and underlying elementary mechanisms discussed. We also address the vast compositional space that remains to be explored and outline fruitful ways to identify regions within this space where high-entropy alloys with potentially interesting properties may be lurking.

Abstract:High-entropy alloy nanoparticles (HEA-NPs) show great potential as functional materials 1,2,3 . However, thus far, the realized high-entropy alloys have been restricted to palettes of similar elements, which greatly hinders the material design, property optimization and mechanistic exploration for different applications 4,5 . Herein, we discovered that liquid metal endowing negative mixing enthalpy with other elements could provide a stable thermodynamic condition and act as a desirable dynamic mixing reservoir, thus realizing the synthesis of HEA-NPs with a diverse range of metal elements in mild reaction conditions. The involved elements have a wide range of atomic radii (1.24–1.97 Å) and melting points (303–3,683 K). We also realized the precisely fabricated structures of nanoparticles via mixing enthalpy tuning. Moreover, the real-time conversion process (that is, from liquid metal to crystalline HEA-NPs) is captured in situ, which confirmed a dynamic fission–fusion behaviour during the alloying process.

Abstract:The alloy world could be divided into low-entropy (LEAs), medium-entropy (MEAs) and high-entropy alloys (HEAs) based on the configurational entropy at the random solution state. In HEAs, four core effects, i.e. high entropy, sluggish diffusion, severe lattice distortion and cocktail effects, are much more significant than low-entropy alloys in affecting phase transformation, microstructure and properties. In fact, the degree of the influence from these core effects more or less increases with increased mixing entropy. The trend is gradual from low-entropy alloys to high-entropy alloys. In this article, physical metallurgy of HEAs is discussed with the bridge connected to that of conventional alloys. As disordered and ordered solid solutions are the main constituent phases of alloys, the understanding of solid solutions is fundamental for the understanding of alloys. In addition, as dilute solid solutions have been well treated in current physical metallurgy, concentrated solid solutions from low-entropy to high-entropy alloys are focused in this article. Physical properties are especially emphasized besides mechanical properties.

Abstract:Conventional arc-melting and casting is the most widely used synthesis method of high-entropy alloys (HEAs). However, the extremely high melting temperature and repetitious melting processes cause the evaporation of some constituent elements with a low melting temperature, resulting in inaccurateness of composition. In this work, in-situ high throughput synthesis of FeCoNiCrCuAlx was carried out in the transmission electron microscope. The dynamic melting process of FeCoNiCrCu with Al was recorded, and the composition of FeCoNiCrCuAlx was examined by an energy dispersive spectrometer. The in-situ high throughput method provides a novel way to prepare HEA samples efficiently.

Abstract:High entropy alloys (HEA) are now a well-known group of materials, which has been studied intensely in the past decade. Due to the high complexity of the various HEA structures and the wide compositional spectrum, the research in the field continues with important discoveries and high work volume. Numerous articles presented various modalities to describe the thermodynamics and atomic arrangement in HEA structures and develop specific criteria for the selection of compositions with predicted solid solution structures. The next step towards the industrial use of the new category of alloys needs to be taken and implies the necessity to describe the implications of methods for alloy synthesis, as the structures obtained would be the closest to the theoretically assumed equilibrium. A succinct review of the methods and results were presented in the article.

Abstract:Abstract High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted extensive attention in recent decades due to their unique chemical, physical, and mechanical properties. An in-depth understanding of the structure–property relationship in HEAs is the key to the discovery and design of new compositions with desirable properties. Related to this, materials genome strategy has been increasingly used for discovering new HEAs with better performance. This review paper provides an overview of key advances in this fast-growing area, along with current challenges and potential opportunities for HEAs. We also discuss related topics, such as high-throughput preparation, characterization, and computation of HEAs, and data-driven machine learning for accelerating alloy development. Finally, future research directions and perspectives for the materials genome-assisted design of HEAs are proposed and discussed.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys have exhibited unusual materials properties. The stability of equimolar single-phase solid solution of five or more elements is supposedly rare and identifying the existence of such alloys has been challenging because of the vast chemical space of possible combinations. Herein, based on high-throughput density-functional theory calculations, we construct a chemical map of single-phase equimolar high-entropy alloys by investigating over 658,000 equimolar quinary alloys through a binary regular solid-solution model. We identify 30,201 potential single-phase equimolar alloys (5% of the possible combinations) forming mainly in body-centered cubic structures. We unveil the chemistries that are likely to form high-entropy alloys, and identify the complex interplay among mixing enthalpy, intermetallics formation, and melting point that drives the formation of these solid solutions. We demonstrate the power of our method by predicting the existence of two new high-entropy alloys, i.e. the body-centered cubic AlCoMnNiV and the face-centered cubic CoFeMnNiZn, which are successfully synthesized.

Abstract:Abstract High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are emerging materials that are developed based on entropy and draw significant attention for designing their chemical disorders to bring different structural and physical characteristics. Over the past two decades, significant salient efforts have been conducted to explore many unique and useful properties of HEAs, such as overcoming the strength-ductile trade off, outstanding thermal stability, and excellent low temperature plasticity. Here, we review the key research topic of HEAs from the following three aspects: (i) performance advantages and composition design, (ii) performance-driven HEAs and (iii) fabrication process-driven HEAs. Towards their industrial applications, our article reviews a large range of methods to synthesis, fabricate and process HEAs. We also discuss the current challenges and future opportunities, mainly focusing on performance breakthroughs in HEAs.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are newly emerging advanced materials. In contrast to conventional alloys, HEAs contain multiple principal elements, often five or more in equimolar or near-equimolar ratios. The basic principle behind HEAs is that solid-solution phases are relatively stabilized by their significantly high entropy of mixing compared to intermetallic compounds, especially at high temperatures. This makes them feasibly synthesized, processed, analyzed, and manipulated, and as well provides many opportunities for us. There are huge numbers of possible compositions and combinations of properties in the HEA field. Wise alloy design strategies for suitable compositions and processes to fit the requirements for either academic studies or industrial applications thus become especially important. In this article, four core effects were emphasized, several misconceptions on HEAs were clarified, and several routes for future HEA research and development were suggested.

Abstract:High‐entropy alloys (HEAs) are novel materials composed of multiple elements with nearly equal concentrations and they exhibit exceptional properties such as high strength, ductility, thermal stability, and corrosion resistance. However, the intricate and diverse structures of HEAs pose significant challenges to understanding and predicting their behavior at different length scales. This review summarizes recent advances in computational simulations and experiments of structure‐property relationships in HEAs at the nano/micro scales. Various methods such as first‐principles calculations, molecular dynamics simulations, phase diagram calculations, and finite element simulations are discussed for revealing atomic/chemical and crystal structures, defect formation and migration, diffusion and phase transition, phase formation and stability, stress‐strain distribution, deformation behavior, and thermodynamic properties of HEAs. Emphasis is placed on the synergistic effects of computational simulations and experiments in terms of validation and complementarity to provide insights into the underlying mechanisms and evolutionary rules of HEAs. Additionally, current challenges and future directions for computational and experimental studies of HEAs are identified, including accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of methods, integration of multiscale and multiphysics models, and exploration of practical applications of HEAs.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys, which exist in the high-dimensional composition space, provide enormous unique opportunities for realizing unprecedented structural and functional properties. A fundamental challenge, however, lies in how to predict the specific alloy phases and desirable properties accurately. This review article provides an overview of the data-driven methods published to date to tackle this exponentially hard problem of designing high-entropy alloys. Various utilizations of empirical parameters, first-principles and thermodynamic calculations, statistical methods, and machine learning are described. In an alternative method, the effectiveness of using phenomenological features and data-inspired adaptive features in the prediction of the high-entropy solid solution phases and intermetallic alloy composites is demonstrated. The prospect of high-entropy alloys as a new class of functional materials with improved properties is featured in light of entropic effects. The successes, challenges, and limitations of the current high-entropy alloys design are discussed, and some plausible future directions are presented.

Abstract:Abstract Metallic alloys have played essential roles in human civilization due to their balanced strength and ductility. Metastable phases and twins have been introduced to overcome the strength-ductility tradeoff in face-centered cubic (FCC) high-entropy alloys (HEAs). However, there is still a lack of quantifiable mechanisms to predict good combinations of the two mechanical properties. Here we propose a possible mechanism based on the parameter κ, the ratio of short-ranged interactions between closed-pack planes. It promotes the formation of various nanoscale stacking sequences and enhances the work-hardening ability of the alloys. Guided by the theory, we successfully designed HEAs with enhanced strength and ductility compared with other extensively studied CoCrNi-based systems. Our results not only offer a physical picture of the strengthening effects but can also be used as a practical design principle to enhance the strength-ductility synergy in HEAs.

Abstract:The topic of high-entropy alloys is one of the focus for both physics and materials research. High-entropy alloys were usually defined as solid solution alloys, while the solid solution is different from the traditional terminal solid solution, because the solid solution without solvent element is the dominant one. The discovery of high-entropy alloys greatly extended the composition space and the possibility of creating unique micro- and nano-level structures, which can meet the demands of lightweight and dynamic applications. The relationship between the phases and the parameters for the high-entropy alloys is rather complex. The data driving design can screen the specific high-entropy alloys. The correlation between the composition and properties of high-entropy alloys can be discovered by material genetic engineering and data science.

Abstract:A high-entropy alloy (HEA) has been defined by us to have at least five principal elements, each of which has an atomic concentration between 5% and 35%. In the exploration on this new alloy field, we find that HEAs are quite simple to analyze and control, and they might be processed as traditional alloys. There exist many opportunities to create novel alloys, better than traditional ones in a wide range of applications. In this paper, we review the basic microstructural features of HEAs and discuss the mechanisms of formation. Instead of multiple intermetallic phases, the HEAs tend to form simple solid solution phases mainly of cubic crystal structure, especially at elevated temperatures. This tendency is explained by the high entropy effect based on the simple relation: (Gmix = (Hmix – T(Smix, and the second law of thermodynamics. Moreover, nanostructures and amorphous phases are easily formed in HEAs. This tendency is explained by kinetics theory as due to slow atomic diffusion.
