Abstract:We quantise from first principles field theories living on the background of a bubble wall in the planar limit with particular focus on the case of spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry. Using these tools, we compute the average momentum transfer from transition radiation: the soft emission of radiation by an energetic particle passing across the wall, with a particular focus on the longitudinal polarisation of vectors. We find these to be comparable to transverse polarisations in symmetry-breaking transitions with mild super-cooling, and dominant in broken to broken transitions with thin wall. Our results have phenomenological applications for the expansion of bubbles during first order phase transitions. Our general framework allows for the robust calculation of any particle processes of interest in such translation breaking backgrounds.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the dynamics of the bubble wall (i.e., the interface between different phases) interacting with the surrounding medium during the first - order phase transition, especially focusing on the influence of friction on the motion of the bubble wall. Specifically, the authors studied the momentum transfer process of particles when crossing the bubble wall by quantifying field theory from first principles, especially focusing on the emission of vector bosons, which is particularly complex in the context of spontaneous symmetry breaking. They calculated the average momentum transfer and analyzed how this transfer affects the pressure on the bubble wall and, in turn, the dynamic behavior during the phase - transition process. The key points mentioned in the paper include: 1. **Background and Motivation**: Physical phenomena that may occur during first - order phase transitions (FOPTs) in the early universe, especially more common in Beyond - Standard - Model (BSM) theories. These phase transitions may lead to a variety of important physical consequences, such as baryogenesis, dark matter production, primordial black hole formation, and gravitational wave generation. 2. **Research Method**: The authors used a new method to quantify field theory, especially in the case of spontaneous symmetry breaking in the context of the bubble wall. They constructed a complete orthogonal basis to describe the "left - moving" and "right - moving" energy eigenstates and analyzed in detail how these states are transformed into the incoming and outgoing asymptotic states. 3. **Main Results**: - The authors calculated the average momentum transfer due to particle emission during the bubble wall crossing process. In particular, they focused on the emission of vector bosons, including the contributions of transverse and longitudinal polarizations. - They found that, under certain conditions, the contribution of longitudinal polarization can be comparable to that of transverse polarization and even dominate in the case of thin walls. - Through sensitivity analysis of different parameters, they provided updated fitting formulas to describe the variation law of the frictional pressure caused by vector emission with the bubble wall velocity. 4. **Application Prospects**: These results are of great significance for understanding the dynamic behavior of first - order phase transitions in the early universe, especially for predicting and explaining the stochastic gravitational wave background signals that may be observed by future gravitational wave detectors. Overall, through detailed theoretical calculations and analyses, this paper provides a new perspective for understanding the dynamic behavior of the bubble wall during the first - order phase transition, which is of great value for exploring the physical processes in the early universe.
