Abstract:Earth's magnetic field was in a highly unusual state when macroscopic animals of the Ediacara Fauna diversified and thrived. Any connection between these events is tantalizing but unclear. Here, we present single crystal paleointensity data from 2054 and 591 Ma pyroxenites and gabbros that define a dramatic intensity decline, from a strong Proterozoic field like that of today, to an Ediacaran value 30 times weaker. The latter is the weakest time-averaged value known to date and together with other robust paleointensity estimates indicate that Ediacaran ultra-low field strengths lasted for at least 26 million years. This interval of ultra-weak magnetic fields overlaps temporally with atmospheric and oceanic oxygenation inferred from numerous geochemical proxies. This concurrence raises the question of whether enhanced H ion loss in a reduced magnetic field contributed to the oxygenation, ultimately allowing diversification of macroscopic and mobile animals of the Ediacara Fauna. An ultra-weak magnetic field from Earth's core lasting for at least 26 million years may have contributed to Earth's oxygenation and further diversification of the Ediacaran fauna, according to single-crystal paleointensity data from igneous rocks in South Africa and Brazil.

Abstract:The early diversification of animals (∼630 Ma), and their development into both motile and macroscopic forms (∼575–565 Ma), has been linked to stepwise increases in the oxygenation of Earth’s surface environment. However, establishing such a linkage between oxygen and evolution for the later Cambrian ‘explosion' (540–520 Ma) of new, energy-sapping body plans and behaviours has proved more elusive. Here we present new molybdenum isotope data, which demonstrate that the areal extent of oxygenated bottom waters increased in step with the early Cambrian bioradiation of animals and eukaryotic phytoplankton. Modern-like oxygen levels characterized the ocean at ∼521 Ma for the first time in Earth history. This marks the first establishment of a key environmental factor in modern-like ecosystems, where animals benefit from, and also contribute to, the ‘homeostasis’ of marine redox conditions.

Abstract:IT has been suggested that evolution may be influenced by reversals of the Earth's magnetic field1–3. It was observed that there were correlations between discontinuities in microfossil assemblages (or evolutionary discontinuities) and reversals of the Earth's magnetic field in deep sea sediment cores4–6. This observation was put on a firm base when Hays7 showed statistically that reversals directly or indirectly exert a selective influence on radiolaria. The explanation offered by Uffen1,2 and Simpson3 for the connection between evolution and reversals was that during reversals of the Earth's magnetic field, the intensity of the field would be reduced to a very low value, allowing organisms at the surface of the Earth to be bombarded by increased cosmic radiation normally shielded by the field. This increased radiation should then cause an enhanced mutation rate and hence produce an evolutionary discontinuity. It was, however, shown later that the estimated increase in the mutation rate would be small and unlikely to cause evolutionary discontinuities8–10.

Abstract:The late Ediacaran to early Cambrian interval witnessed extraordinary radiations of metazoan life. The role of the physical environment in this biological revolution, such as changes to oxygen levels and nutrient availability, has been the focus of longstanding debate. Seemingly contradictory data from geochemical redox proxies help to fuel this controversy. As an essential nutrient, nitrogen can help to resolve this impasse by establishing linkages between nutrient supply, ocean redox, and biological changes. Here we present a comprehensive N-isotope dataset from the Yangtze Basin that reveals remarkable coupling between δ15N, δ13C, and evolutionary events from circa 551 to 515 Ma. The results indicate that increased fixed nitrogen supply may have facilitated episodic animal radiations by reinforcing ocean oxygenation, and restricting anoxia to near, or even at the sediment–water interface. Conversely, sporadic ocean anoxic events interrupted ocean oxygenation, and may have led to extinctions of the Ediacaran biota and small shelly animals. The late Ediacaran to early Cambrian interval witnessed extraordinary radiations of metazoan life, in which the role of physical environment remains debated. Here, Wang et al. show that increased nutrient nitrogen availability may have exerted an important control on both macroevolution and ocean oxygenation.

Abstract:A time discrepancy of at least 200–300 million years exists between the generally accepted onset of metazoan evolution as currently evidenced from fossils compared with that from studies at the molecular level. That temporal disparity coincides with the existence and subsequent breakup of the Rodinia Supercontinent when the earliest evolutionary crucibles were isolated intracratonic basins rather than the globally connected shallow seaways of subsequent eras. However, the discovery of fossil evidence to complement the extrapolations from molecular data has been, and continues to be, hampered, by both the geographical limitations of these isolated intracratonic basins and the fact that any such discovery would conflict with the global geological mindset that macrofossils of such age do not exist. Yet recently identified within the intracratonic Amadeus Basin of central Australia is a suite of macroscopic metazoan fossils that dates to ca 850–840 Ma, exemplifying an early attempt at animal evolution within the restrictions of the Rodinia Supercontinent. Such early metazoan evolution within such isolated crucibles, however, was extremely vulnerable to variations in climatic conditions, which threatened total extinction because the isolation of these basins limited metazoan distribution by denying them the possibility of migrating to safer havens. The Amadeus Basin evidence suggests that early metazoan evolution perhaps comprised cycles of about 10 million years when evolution flourished followed by climate change induced extinction and a subsequent evolutionary void of between 50 and 100 million years. Such cycles possibly characterised metazoan evolution until the Rodinia Supercontinent broke-up, after which connections between smaller oceans, shallow seas and narrow waterways provided metazoan life passageway to sanctuary during times of environmental stress. As the Amadeus Basin was just one of a number of isolated Rodinian-aged intracratonic basins, it is likely that similar fossils of the earliest metazoans are preserved elsewhere awaiting discovery.

Abstract:The evolution of life is affected by variations of atmospheric oxygen level and geomagnetic field intensity. Oxygen can escape into interplanetary space as ions after gaining momentum from solar wind, but Earth's strong dipole field reduces the momentum transfer efficiency and the ion outflow rate, except for the time of geomagnetic polarity reversals when the field is significantly weakened in strength and becomes Mars-like in morphology. The newest databases available for the Phanerozoic era illustrate that the reversal rate increased and the atmospheric oxygen level decreased when the marine diversity showed a gradual pattern of mass extinctions lasting millions of years. We propose that accumulated oxygen escape during an interval of increased reversal rate could have led to the catastrophic drop of oxygen level, which is known to be a cause of mass extinction. We simulated the oxygen ion escape rate for the Triassic-Jurassic event, using a modified Martian ion escape model with an input of quiet solar wind inferred from Sun-like stars. The results show that geomagnetic reversal could enhance the oxygen escape rate by 3-4 orders only if the magnetic field was extremely weak, even without consideration of space weather effects. This suggests that our hypothesis could be a possible explanation of a correlation between geomagnetic reversals and mass extinction. Therefore, if this causal relation indeed exists, it should be a "many-to-one" scenario rather the previously considered "one-to-one", and planetary magnetic field should be much more important than previously thought for planetary habitability. Abstract:Fe speciation and S-isotope of pyrite data from the terminal Proterozoic Sheepbed Formation in Canada and Doushantuo Formation in China reveal that ocean deep waters were anoxic after the global glaciations (snowball Earth) ending 635 million years ago, but that marine sulfate concentrations and inferentially atmospheric oxygen levels were higher than before the glaciations. This supports a long-postulated link between oxygen levels and the emergence of eumetazoa. Subsequent ventilation of the deep ocean, inferred from shifts in Fe speciation in Newfoundland (previously published data) and western Canada (this report), paved the way for Ediacaran macrobiota to colonize the deep seafloors.

Abstract:Significance Earth is currently the only planet known to harbor complex life. Understanding whether terrestrial biotic complexity is a unique phenomenon or can be expected to be widespread in the universe depends on a mechanistic understanding of the factors that led to the emergence of complex life on Earth. Here, we use geochemical constraints and quantitative models to suggest that marine environments may have been unfavorable for the emergence and large-scale proliferation of motile multicellular life for most of Earth’s history. Further, we argue that a holistic evaluation of environmental variability, organismal life history, and spatial ecological dynamics is essential for a full accounting of the factors that have allowed for the emergence of biological complexity on Earth.

Abstract:The Ediacaran Period (∼635 to 541 Ma) witnessed the early diversification and radiation of metazoans, in the form of the Ediacaran Biota. This biological revolution, beginning at ∼575 Ma, has been widely attributed to a temporally restricted episode of deeper ocean oxygenation, potentially caused by a contemporaneous rise in atmospheric oxygen levels. However, quantitative geochemical-record-driven estimates of Ediacaran atmospheric and oceanic redox evolution are lacking, and hence possible links between oceanic and atmospheric oxygenation remain speculative. Here, after screening for possible post-depositional alteration, we utilize paleogeographically-diverse carbon and sulfur isotope records from South China, Oman and USA-Mexico, to develop a biogeochemical isotope mass balance model to quantify Ediacaran atmospheric oxygen and oceanic sulfate evolution. Model results from all three continents indicate that Ediacaran atmospheric oxygen levels rose monotonically between ∼630 Ma and ∼590 Ma, and subsequently remained relatively stable at around 0.6 present atmospheric level for the remainder of the Ediacaran. By contrast, the marine sulfate reservoir appears to have remained relatively stable before ∼575 Ma, with a subsequent large pulse where sulfate concentrations rose to ∼8 mM. These quantitative results indicate that Ediacaran oceanic and atmospheric oxygenation were decoupled, which is consistent with published geochemical records. We propose that the early Ediacaran rise of atmospheric oxygen levels, driven by increased net burial of organic carbon and pyrite, may not have established widespread deep-ocean oxygenation. Instead, later pulsed input of oxidizing power (mainly sulfate) from the continents drove transient episodes of seafloor oxygenation that accompanied radiations of the Ediacaran Biota.

Abstract:While it is widely accepted that early animals originated and primarily evolved during the Neoproterozoic to Cambrian period, there remains ongoing debate over how fluctuations in marine-atmospheric oxygen levels influenced their evolution and diversification. To investigate this, we analyzed pristane/phytane ratios—a redox-proxy based on organic geochemistry—in surface sediments from the Cryogenian to Cambrian successions in South China, Oman, and Australia. The temporal changes in this proxy exhibited consistent patterns across all sites, revealing five cycles of anoxic to oxic conditions in the ocean between 660 and 510 Ma. By examining the average pristane/phytane ratios, we identified three events when oxygen levels increased. This represents a transition from anoxic conditions to anoxic-dysoxic boundary at 630–600 Ma, followed by a shift to dysoxic conditions at 570 Ma (Shuram event), and finally reaching oxic conditions at 520 Ma (Cambrian explosion). Significantly, these oxygenation events align with eumetazoan evolution. An inverse relationship was observed between oceanic redox events and positive/negative shifts of δ 13 C carb , occurring between the first and second oxygenation events, suggesting an increase in atmospheric oxygen levels. Based on these findings, we propose that there were global increases in oceanic and atmospheric oxygen levels, at least during the early Ediacaran period. These shifts in oxygen levels likely played a role in influencing the rate of evolution among early animals.

Abstract:The earliest unambiguous evidence for animals is represented by various trace fossils in the latest Ediacaran Period (550–541 Ma), suggesting that the earliest animals lived on or even penetrated into the seafloor. Yet, the O2 fugacity at the sediment-water interface (SWI) for the earliest animal proliferation is poorly defined. The preferential colonization of seafloor as a first step in animal evolution is also unusual. In order to understand the environmental background, we employed a new proxy, carbonate associated ferrous iron (Fecarb), to quantify the seafloor oxygenation. Fecarb of the latest Ediacaran Shibantan limestone in South China, which yields abundant animal traces, ranges from 2.27 to 85.43 ppm, corresponding to the seafloor O2 fugacity of 162 μmol/L to 297 μmol/L. These values are significantly higher than the oxygen saturation in seawater at the contemporary atmospheric pO2 levels. The highly oxygenated seafloor might be attributed to O2 production of the microbial mats. Despite the moderate atmospheric pO2 level, microbial mats possibly provided highly oxygenated niches for the evolution of benthic metazoans. Our model suggests that the O2 barrier could be locally overcome in the mat ground, questioning the long-held belief that atmospheric oxygenation was the key control of animal evolution.

Abstract:Significance The rise of atmospheric oxygen over Earth’s history has received much recent interdisciplinary attention. However, the puzzle of when and how atmospheric oxygen reached modern levels remains unresolved. Many recent studies have argued for a major oxygenation event—of uncertain cause—in the Neoproterozoic Era >541 Ma, enabling the rise of animals. Previous modelling work has predicted a late Paleozoic oxygen rise (<380 Ma) due to the rise of forests. Here we show that neither scenario is correct. Instead, the earliest plants, which colonized the land from 470 Ma onward, first increased atmospheric oxygen to present levels by 400 Ma, and this instigated fire-mediated feedbacks that have stabilized high oxygen levels ever since, shaping subsequent evolution.

Abstract:Microbes that synthesize minerals, a process known as microbial biomineralization, contributed substantially to the evolution of current planetary environments through numerous important geochemical processes. Despite its geological significance, the origin and evolution of microbial biomineralization remain poorly understood. Through combined metagenomic and phylogenetic analyses of deep-branching magnetotactic bacteria from the Nitrospirae phylum, and using a Bayesian molecular clock-dating method, we show here that the gene cluster responsible for biomineralization of magnetosomes, and the arrangement of magnetosome chain(s) within cells, both originated before or near the Archean divergence between the Nitrospirae and Proteobacteria. This phylogenetic divergence occurred well before the Great Oxygenation Event. Magnetotaxis likely evolved due to environmental pressures conferring an evolutionary advantage to navigation via the geomagnetic field. Earth's dynamo must therefore have been sufficiently strong to sustain microbial magnetotaxis in the Archean, suggesting that magnetotaxis coevolved with the geodynamo over geological time.

Abstract:The role of oxygen as a driver for early animal evolution is widely debated. During the Cambrian explosion, episodic radiations of major animal phyla occurred coincident with repeated carbon isotope fluctuations. However, the driver of these isotope fluctuations and potential links to environmental oxygenation are unclear. Here we report high-resolution carbon and sulfur isotope data for marine carbonates from the southeastern Siberian Platform that document the canonical explosive phase of the Cambrian radiation from ~524 to ~514 Myr ago. These analyses demonstrate a strong positive covariation between carbonate δ13C and carbonate-associated sulfate δ34S through five isotope cycles. Biogeochemical modelling suggests that this isotopic coupling reflects periodic oscillations in the atmospheric O2 and the extent of shallow-ocean oxygenation. Episodic maxima in the biodiversity of animal phyla directly coincided with these extreme oxygen perturbations. Conversely, the subsequent Botoman–Toyonian animal extinction events (~514 to ~512 Myr ago) coincided with decoupled isotope records that suggest a shrinking marine sulfate reservoir and expanded shallow marine anoxia. We suggest that fluctuations in oxygen availability in the shallow marine realm exerted a primary control on the timing and tempo of biodiversity radiations at a crucial phase in the early history of animal life.

Abstract:Significance The relationship between the origin of animals and the oxygen content of the atmosphere is a pressing issue in historical geology. Here we challenge the widely held view that low levels of atmospheric oxygen delayed the origin of animals up until 850–542 million years ago. We provide experimental evidence suggesting that the last common ancestor of animals could have thrived in oxygen levels as low as 0.5% to 4% of present atmospheric levels, which were likely met on Earth well before animals evolved. This was achieved by observing the survival of sponges, basal animals similar to the earliest metazoans, under low-oxygen conditions in the laboratory. These results encourage us to reconsider the environmental constraints on the origin of animal life.

Abstract:The long history of life on Earth has unfolded as a cause-and-effect relationship with the evolving amount of oxygen (O2) in the oceans and atmosphere. Oxygen deficiency characterized our planet's first 2 billion years, yet evidence for biological O2 production and local enrichments in the surface ocean appear long before the first accumulations of O2 in the atmosphere roughly 2.4 to 2.3 billion years ago. Much has been written about this fundamental transition and the related balance between biological O2 production and sinks coupled to deep Earth processes that could buffer against the accumulation of biogenic O2. However, the relationship between complex life (eukaryotes, including animals) and later oxygenation is less clear. Some data suggest O2 was higher but still mostly low for another billion and a half years before increasing again around 800 million years ago, potentially setting a challenging course for complex life during its initial development and ecological expansion. The apparent rise in O2 around 800 million years ago is coincident with major developments in complex life. Multiple geochemical and paleontological records point to a major biogeochemical transition at that time, but whether rising and still dynamic biospheric oxygen triggered or merely followed from innovations in eukaryotic ecology, including the emergence of animals, is still debated. This paper focuses on the geochemical records of Earth's middle history, roughly 1.8 to 0.5 billion years ago, as a backdrop for exploring possible cause-and-effect relationships with biological evolution and the primary controls that may have set its pace, including solid Earth/tectonic processes, nutrient limitation, and their possible linkages. A richer mechanistic understanding of the interplay between coevolving life and Earth surface environments can provide a template for understanding and remotely searching for sustained habitability and even life on distant exoplanets.

Faunal change in the Turkana Basin during the late Oligocene and Miocene

Abstract:Faunal evolution over the last 65 million years of earth's history was dominated by mammalian radiations, but much of this era is poorly represented in Africa. Mammals first appeared early in the Mesozoic, living alongside dinosaurs for millions of years, but it was not until the extinction of dinosaurs 65 myr ago that the first major explosion of mammalian taxa took place. The Cenozoic (65 Ma to Recent) witnessed repeated and dynamic events involving the radiation, evolution, and extinction of mammalian faunas. Two of these events, each marking the extinction of one diverse fauna and subsequent establishment of another equally diverse fauna, both involving advanced catarrhine primates, are recorded in sites in the Turkana Basin, despite the poorly represented record of Cenozoic faunas elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa. The first of these events occurred at the Oligocene-Miocene transition and the other at the Miocene-Pliocene transition.

Abstract:It is has been assumed for over half a century that the earliest animals were obligate aerobes with relatively high oxygen requirements. However, the conserved biochemistry and widespread phylogenetic distribution of anaerobic energy metabolism in animals suggests a deep ancestral possession of the genes and enzymes necessary for a facultative anaerobic lifestyle. Additionally, non-bilaterian bodyplans are not expected to require particularly high environmental oxygen levels. This is consistent with experimental evidence demonstrating the low-oxygen tolerance of the sponge Halichondria panicea. While it is conceivable that low-oxygen-adapted animals evolved only sometime during the past 541 million years, perhaps in response to oceanic anoxic events, they most reasonably date back to the first animals themselves, as the last common ancestor of animals likely emerged in a relatively low-oxygen world, possessed the genetic means for anaerobiosis, and exhibited a bodyplan conducive to aerobic growth under oxygen levels less than 4% of modern atmospheric saturation.
