Abstract:We focus on providing the first comprehensive national dataset on the incidence, injury aetiology and mortality of TSCI in China. A multi-stage stratified cluster sampling method was used. We included TSCI cases from all hospitals in three regions, nine provinces and 27 cities in China via search of electronic medical records and retrospectively analysed the characteristics of TSCI in China from 2009 to 2018. We estimated the incidence of TSCI in the total population and subgroups. There were 5954 actual cases in 2009, corresponding to a total estimated TSCI incidence of 45.1 cases per million population (95% CI, 44.0–46.3). There were 10,074 actual cases in 2018, corresponding to a total estimated TSCI incidence of 66.5 cases per million population (95% CI, 65.2–67.8) (P < 0.001; annual average percentage change (AAPC), 4.4%). From 2009 to 2018, the incidence of almost all sex/age groups showed an increasing trend over time (P < 0.001; AAPC, 0.7–8.8%). The elderly population (aged 65–74) displayed the highest incidence of TSCI (with an average annual incidence of 127.1 cases per million [95% CI, 119.8–134.3]). The TSCI incidence increased significantly from 2009 to 2018. The incidence in the elderly populations was consistently high and continues to increase over time. The mortality of TSCI patients in hospitals is relatively low and continues to decrease each year, but elderly individuals remain at a high risk of hospital death.

Study DesignRetrospective cohort study.ObjectivesTo identify predictors for early mortality following traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI), as recognition of factors associated with early mortality is essential for public resource allocation and optimized acute care.MethodsRetrospective Analysis of SCI patients admitted to the acute SCI ward from 2003 to 2022 was performed. Days elapsing from the date of injury to date of death established the survival time. Early mortality was defined as survival time ≤ 365 days. Multivariable logistic regression was used in modeling of early death following TSCI with age, gender, neurologic deficit, type of neurologic injury, ventilation status, and count of complications as covariates.ResultsSimple logistic regression indicated a significant association of early mortality with the number of complications (P < .0001), neurological deficit (P < .0001), complete neurological injury (P < .0001), ventilation status (P < .0001), and age group (P < .0003). After adjusting for other covariates, complete neurological injury (OR: 1.75, P < .0001), ventilation (OR: 2.80, P < .0001), and Age group (over 60 OR: 17.71, P < .0001) were significantly associated with early mortality. The multivariable model showed a good overall fit (Hosmer-Lemeshow P = .315; AUC 0.85).ConclusionsPredictors of early mortality after TSCI are high complete spinal cord injury, age, number of complications, and the need for ventilation. Identification of high-risk patients is crucial to rationalize and improve acute care to potentially reduce mortality rates.

The Predictive Role of Systemic Inflammation Response Index in the Prognosis of Traumatic Brain Injury: A Propensity Score Matching Study.

Abstract:BackgroundWe aimed to evaluate the predictive power of systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), a novel biomarker, to predict all-cause mortality in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the intensive care unit (ICU).MethodsClinical data were retrieved from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV (MIMIC-IV) database. Kaplan-Meier (KM) methods and cox proportional hazard models were performed to examine the association between SIRI and all-cause mortality. The predictive power of SIRI was evaluated compared to other leukocyte-related indexes including neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes and white blood cells (WBC) by the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC)curve for 30-day mortality. In addition, propensity score matching (PSM) was conducted to reduce confounding.ResultsA total of 350 TBI patients were enrolled overall in our study. The optimal cutoff point of SIRI was determined at 11.24 × 109/L. After 1:1 PSM, 66 matched pairs (132 patients) were generated. During the 30-day, in-hospital and 365-day follow-up periods, patients with low SIRI level were associated with improved survival (p < 0.05) compared with patients with high SIRI level. Cox regression analysis identified that higher SIRI values was an independent risk factor for all-cause mortality and results were stable on multiple subgroup analyses. Furthermore, ROC analysis indicated that the area under the curve of SIRI [0.6658 (95% Confidence Interval, 0.5630–0.7687)] was greater than that of neutrophils, monocytes, lymphocytes and WBC. The above results were also observed in the matched cohort.ConclusionIt was suggested that TBI patients with high SIRI level would suffer from a high risk of 30-day, in-hospital and 365-day mortality. SIRI is a promising inflammatory biomarker for predicting TBI patients' prognosis with relatively better predictive power than other single indicators related to peripheral differential leukocyte counts.

Abstract:Scandinavian Journal of Surgery, Ahead of Print. Backgrounds and aims:We aimed to determine the incidence and severity of spine injuries among severely injured trauma patients (Injury Severity Score (ISS)/New Injury Severity Score (NISS) > 15) treated in a single tertiary trauma center over 15 years. We also wanted to compare the demographics between patients with and without spine injuries and to determine the mortality of spine-injury patients.Methods:Data from the years 2006–2020 from the Helsinki Trauma Registry (HTR), a local trauma registry of the trauma unit of the Helsinki University Hospital (HUH), were reviewed. We divided patients into two groups, namely those with traumatic spine injury (TSI) and those without traumatic spine injury (N-TSI). TSI patients were further subdivided into groups according to the level of injury (cervical, thoracolumbar, or multilevel) and the presence of neurological symptoms.Results:We included 2529 patients: 1336 (53%) had a TSI and 1193 (47%) had N-TSI. TSI patients were injured more frequently by a high-fall mechanism (37% vs 21%, p < 0.001). Among TSI patients, 38% of high-fall injuries were self-inflicted. High falls, young age, and female gender were overrepresented in spine-injury patients with a self-inflicted injury mechanism. Cervical spine-injury patients were mostly elderly persons injured by a low-energy mechanism.Conclusions:Unlike other severely injured trauma patients, severely injured trauma patients with spine injuries are more frequently injured by a high-fall mechanism and self-injury.

Development of a machine learning algorithm for predicting in-hospital and 1-year mortality after traumatic spinal cord injury

Abstract:Background context: Current prognostic tools such as the Injury Severity Score (ISS) that predict mortality following trauma do not adequately consider the unique characteristics of traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI). Purpose: Our aim was to develop and validate a prognostic tool that can predict mortality following tSCI. Study design: Retrospective review of a prospective cohort study. Patient sample: Data was collected from 1245 persons with acute tSCI who were enrolled in the Rick Hansen Spinal Cord Injury Registry between 2004 and 2016. Outcome measures: In-hospital and 1-year mortality following tSCI. Methods: Machine learning techniques were used on patient-level data (n=849) to develop the Spinal Cord Injury Risk Score (SCIRS) that can predict mortality based on age, neurological level and completeness of injury, AOSpine classification of spinal column injury morphology, and Abbreviated Injury Scale scores. Validation of the SCIRS was performed by testing its accuracy in an independent validation cohort (n=396) and comparing its performance to the ISS, a measure which is used to predict mortality following general trauma. Results: For 1-year mortality prediction, the values for the Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUC) for the development cohort were 0.84 (standard deviation=0.029) for the SCIRS and 0.55 (0.041) for the ISS. For the validation cohort, AUC values were 0.86 (0.051) for the SCIRS and 0.71 (0.074) for the ISS. For in-hospital mortality, AUC values for the development cohort were 0.87 (0.028) and 0.60 (0.050) for the SCIRS and ISS, respectively. For the validation cohort, AUC values were 0.85 (0.054) for the SCIRS and 0.70 (0.079) for the ISS. Conclusions: The SCIRS can predict in-hospital and 1-year mortality following tSCI more accurately than the ISS. The SCIRS can be used in research to reduce bias in estimating parameters and can help adjust for coefficients during model development. Further validation using larger sample sizes and independent datasets is needed to assess its reliability and to evaluate using it as an assessment tool to guide clinical decision-making and discussions with patients and families.
All-cause mortality and suicide after pediatric traumatic brain injury: a 20-year nationwide study in Finland

Abstract:Objectives: To assess all-cause mortality and suicides after pediatric traumatic brain injury (pTBI). Study design: We conducted population-based historical cohort study using three nationwide registers from 1998 to 2018 in Finland. All patients that were the age of 0-17 at the time of the pTBI were included. The reference group consisted of children with ankle or wrist fractures. We used Kaplan-Meier and restricted mean survival time (RMST) analysis with 95% confidence intervals (CI) to compare all-cause mortality and suicides between groups. Results: After 20 years of follow-up, there were 479 deaths in the pTBI group (0.67% of 71,963) and 306 deaths in the reference group (0.47% of 64,848). In the pTBI group, 28.6% of the deaths occurred after the first follow-up year, compared to 2.6% in the reference group. In all-cause mortality, survival time was slightly less in the pTBI group with age and gender adjustment throughout the follow-up period [20-year RMST ratio: 0.995; CI (0.994-0.996)]. The leading manners of death were suicides (pTBI group = 28.4%; reference group = 45.5%) and traffic collisions (pTBI group = 37.4%; reference group = 20.8%). Age and gender-adjusted survival time was slightly less for those with suicide as a manner of death in the pTBI group [10-year RMST ratio: 0.999; CI (0.999-0.999); 20-year RMST ratio: 0.999; CI (0.998-0.999)]. Conclusions: Children and adolescents who sustained a TBI have slightly lower long-term survival time for all-cause mortality, most of which occurs during the first year following injury. There is no clinically meaningful difference in deaths by suicide between the two injury groups.
Epidemiology of Spinal Cord Injury in Adults in Sweden, 2016-2020: A Retrospective Registry-Based Study

Abstract:Study design: We conducted a retrospective, descriptive register study. Objective: The aim of the study was to present the epidemiological and demographic characteristics of the Swedish spinal cord injury (SCI) population. Setting: Rehabilitation units in Sweden were connected to the National Quality Register for Rehabilitation Medicine (Svenskt Register för Rehabiliteringsmedicin: SveReh). The registry includes data from 26 units around the country. Methods: Information was extracted from SveReh for patients who underwent rehabilitation for a new onset SCI between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2020. Data regarding gender, age, aetiology, level of injury, neurogenic bowel and/or bladder dysfunction, complications during the primary rehabilitation, and the need for bi-level positive airway pressure, continuous positive airway pressure, or ventilator were analysed. Results: Mean age at onset was 56 years, and men were overrepresented (66%). Tetraplegia was more common among traumatic SCI (TSCI) than non-traumatic SCI (NTSCI). The incidence was 11.9-14.8 per million for TSCI and 8.9-11.8 per million for NTSCI. At discharge, 8% of patients needed a breathing aid. Of those who were ventilator-dependent at discharge, 75% had a TSCI. Disturbed bowel and bladder functioning was noted in 58% of patients at discharge. The median time spent at the unit was 40 days, but it was approximately 2 weeks longer for those with a TSCI. Conclusions: Systematic and updated data on the Swedish SCI population show a pattern similar to Scandinavian countries with high age at onset and falls being the main cause of TSCI. The TSCI incidence was lower than in previous studies, and the results for NTSCI were novel.
Investigating Factors Affecting Mortality Due to Spinal Cord Trauma in Patients Admitted to the Intensive Care Unit

Abstract:Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the factors affecting mortality due to spinal cord trauma in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: This study was conducted in a group of patients who were admitted to the ICU with a Traumatic Spinal Injuries (TSI) diagnosis. The researcher started sampling by assessing the documents of the patients hospitalized in the ICU, and the diagnosis of TSI was confirmed for them. Besides, utilizing a researcher-made checklist, factors affecting the mortality of patients were identified. The data were analyzed using the SPSS software version 16. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: About 412 (64.2%) patients were men, about 213 (33.2%) of the patients had GCS between 3-8 grade. There were injuries in the pelvis area. Moreover, there was a significant relationship between GCS score status and the number of injury follow-ups in addition to TSI. Therefore, the mortality rate was higher in patients who had lower GCS (Odds ratio=2.32, p<0.001). There was also a significant relationship between the number of injuries and the mortality rate, and patients who had multiple traumas had a higher mortality rate. Besides, a significant relationship was observed between the complications caused by trauma, including cerebrovascular accident, cardiac arrest, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pneumonia, and the mortality of patients hospitalized in the SICU (p<0.05). Conclusion: The patients' mortality was influenced by factors such as their level of consciousness, the number of traumas caused in the spinal cord, and the occurrence of comorbidities such as cerebrovascular accident, cardiac arrest, ARDS, and pneumonia. Therefore, it is necessary to take the essential measures to reduce these complications.
Exploring the Impact of Traumatic Injury on Mortality: An analysis of the certified cause of death within one year of serious injury in the Scottish population

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Few studies effectively quantify the long-term incidence of death following injury. The absence of detailed mortality and underlying cause of death data results in limited understanding and a potential underestimation of the consequences at a population level. This study takes a nationwide approach to identify the one-year mortality following injury in Scotland, evaluating survivorship in relation to pre-existing comorbidities and incidental causes of death.STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study assessed the one-year mortality of adult trauma patients with an Injury Severity Score ≥ 9 during 2020 using the Scottish Trauma Audit Group (STAG) registry linked to inpatient hospital data and death certificate records. Patients were divided into three groups: trauma death, trauma-contributed death, and non-trauma death. Kaplan-Meier curves were used for survival analysis to evaluate mortality, and cox proportional hazards regression analysed risk factors linked to death.RESULTS: 4056 patients were analysed with a median age 63 years (58-88) and male predominance (55.2 %). Falls accounted for 73.1 % of injuries followed by motor vehicle accidents (16.3 %) and blunt force (4.9 %). Extremity was the most commonly injured region overall followed by chest and head. However, head injury prevailed in those who died. The registry demonstrated a one-year mortality of 19.3 % with 55 % deaths occurring post-discharge. Of all deaths reported, 35.3 % were trauma deaths, and 47.7 % were trauma-contributed deaths. These groups accounted for over 70 % of mortality within 30 days of hospital admission and continued to represent the majority of deaths up to 6 months post-injury. Patients who died after 6 months were mainly the result of non-traumatic causes, frequently circulatory, neoplastic, and respiratory diseases (37.7 %, 12.3 %, 9.1 %, respectively). Independent risk factors for one-year mortality included a GCS ≤ 8, modified Charlson Comorbidity score >5, Injury Severity Score >25, serious head injury, age and sex.CONCLUSION: With a one-year mortality of 19.3 %, and post-discharge deaths higher than previously appreciated, patients can face an extended period of survival uncertainty. As mortality due to index trauma lasted up to 6 months post-admission, short-term outcomes fail to represent trauma burden and so cogent survival predictions should be avoided in clinical and patient settings.

Abstract:Study design: Retrospective population based study on traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) in Ireland. Objectives: To gather the most recent epidemiological data prior to the implementation of a new national trauma strategy. Also, to consider if the COVID-19 pandemic impacted on SCI epidemiology in Ireland. Setting: Republic of Ireland. Methods: All patients with TSCI discharged from the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH), the national acute SCI unit and two neurosciences centres were included. The International Spinal Cord Injury Core Data Set was collected on all patients at discharge from rehabilitation between 2017 and 2022. Results: Overall crude incidence of TSCI was 14 per million per year, ranging between 11.3 and 18.4. 12.7% of patients did not survive to discharge from hospital. In those completing rehabilitation, the mean age of injury onset was 50.1 years (SD 19.9). Males accounted for 75.7%. The most common impairment was incomplete tetraplegia, 45.3% of all TSCI. Leading aetiology was falls, 53.9% of injuries. Patients with incomplete tetraplegia and those whose cause of injury were falls were older than those with all other impairments and injury aetiologies (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Overall incidence of TSCI is similar to our previous studies. Also similar is the predominant pattern of older people sustaining falls resulting in incomplete tetraplegia.
Long-Term Disability After Traumatic Spinal Injuries: A Military Retrospective Study

Abstract:Background: Traumatic spinal injuries (TSI) pose a significant life-long burden, impacting both military and civilian populations. Assessing long-term outcomes is crucial for comprehending the enduring consequences of the initial insult and informing effective prevention and management strategies. Most existing studies have narrowly focused on subsets of traumatic cord injuries, leaving a gap in understanding the broader impact of severe spinal trauma. This study aims to examine severe TSIs in military personnel, who may face unique risk factors and injury patterns, and its association with long-term disability. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on all military personnel who suffered traumatic injuries (Injury Severity Score ≥ 9) from 1997 to 2020. Severe spinal injuries were defined using the spinal Abbreviated Injury Scale ≥ 3 (n = 95), and compared to all other injuries as a reference group (n = 1,394). Data were extracted and cross-referenced from three distinct nationwide registries-pre-hospital, admission, and rehabilitation. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the impact of spinal injuries on long-term disabilities (defined as the highest possible disability tier). The study received approval from the institutional review board of the Israel Defense Forces Medical Corps. Results: Motor vehicle accidents and falls were the primary causes of spinal injuries (50.5% and 15.8%, respectively). The median age at injury was 20 years (interquartile range 19-22). Personnel with spinal trauma had a significantly higher prevalence of Injury Severity Score ≥ 25 (46.3% vs. 19.9%, P < .001), longer median hospital stays (11 vs. 8 days, P = .036), and increased intensive care unit admissions (55% vs. 40%, P = .05). The median follow-up duration was 10.9 years (interquartile range 6.7-14.3). Spinal injuries were associated with a more than 10-fold increase in the adjusted odds ratio for severe permanent disability (11.92, 95% CI, 5.95-23.72). Conclusion: Upon long-term follow-up, military personnel with severe TSI exhibit a significantly higher prevalence of debilitating disability compared to those with significant non-spinal traumatic injuries. These findings highlight the critical need for targeted prevention strategies and improved management of spinal injuries to reduce long-term disability. Strengths of this study include its extensive follow-up period and the use of multiple nationwide registries. However, the study may be limited by potential discrepancies in identity matching across databases and the reliance on disability claims, which may underrepresent the true prevalence of long-term disability. Future research should explore the efficacy of early interventions and rehabilitation strategies in mitigating long-term disability following spinal injuries. This study underscores the importance of developing evidence-based policies to enhance care for individuals with TSIs.
Traumatic spinal cord injury and its correlation to risk of autoimmune/-inflammatory disease

Abstract:Study design: Nationwide epidemiological open cohort study. Objectives: To evaluate whether individuals with traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) are more prone to develop autoimmune diseases compared to a general non-TSCI population. Setting: Danish public national registries. Methods: An open nationwide cohort, including individuals born in Denmark from or alive during 1945-2018 was collected and the study period was 1980-2018. Poissons Log-linear regression estimated the incidence rate ratio (IRR) for developing eight groups of autoimmune diseases. A dose-response relationship based on the cervical/thoracic level of injury was assessed by stratification. Results: The cohort included 3,272 individuals with TSCI and 4.8 million background individuals, accounting for 50,865 and 140 million person-years respectively. The TSCI population had an overall IRR of 1.81 (95% CI, 1.59 to 2.05) of getting any autoimmune disease. Subgroup analysis found positive associations for; a) Other neurologic IRR 5.19 (95% CI, 2.79 to 9.65), b) multiple sclerosis IRR 3.70 (95% CI, 2.54 to 5.40), c) Dermatologic IRR 2.57 (95% CI, 1.86 to 3.55), d) Type 1 diabetes mellitus IRR 2.01 (95% CI, 1.54 to 2.61), e) Systemic 1.92 (95% CI, 1.44 to 2.55), and f) Gastroenterologic IRR 1.42 (95% CI, 1.05 to 1.92). Cervical levels of TSCI showed an IRR of 1.70 (95% CI, 1.43 to 2.02), while thoracic levels had an IRR 1.98 (95% CI, 1.63 to 2.39). Conclusions: TSCI may be an individual risk factor of developing an autoimmune disease. There does not appear to exist a dose-response relationship from the level of injury. Sponsorship: None.

Abstract:Out of a regional traumatic spinal cord injury population consisting of 379 individuals, 353 (93.1%) participated in the present study. Subjects were individually interviewed using semi-structured protocols. In addition, previous medical records were available for over 96% of subjects, and were used in all these cases to minimise recall bias. Cause of injury, prevalence of present medical symptoms and occurrence of medical complications in the post-acute, post-discharge phase were recorded. Neurological classification was verified by physical examination according to ASIA/IMSOP standards. Many subjects had experienced complications since discharge from initial hospitalisation, especially urinary tract infections, decubitus ulcers, urolithiasis, and neurological deterioration. Prevalence of medical symptoms was also high. More than 41% of subjects with spastic paralysis reported excessive spasticity to be associated with additional functional impairment and/or pain. Almost two-thirds of subjects reported significant pain, with a predominance of neurogenic-type pain. Bladder and bowel dysfunction were each rated by nearly 41% of subjects as a moderate to severe life problem. As expected, sexual dysfunction was also commonly reported. Prevalence of reported symptoms by general systems review was high, particularly fatigue, constipation, ankle oedema, joint and muscle problems, and disturbed sleep. However, lack of adequate normative data precludes comparison with the general population. The frequent occurrence of reported medical problems and complications support advocacy of comprehensive, life-long care for SCI patients. The commonly reported problems of neurogenic pain and neurological deterioration, in particular, require more attention, as these symptoms are not seldom ominous, either by virtue of their impact on quality of life, or because of underlying pathology.

Abstract:Background: Traumatic subaxial cervical spine fractures are a significant public health concern due to their association with spinal cord injuries (SCI). Despite being mostly caused by low-energy trauma, these fractures significantly contribute to morbidity and mortality. Currently, research regarding early mortality based on the choice of treatment following these fractures is limited. Identifying predictors of early mortality may aid in postoperative patient monitoring and improve outcomes. Purpose: This study aimed to identify predictors of 30-days, 90-days, and 1-year mortality in adults treated for subaxial fractures. Study design: A retrospective review of the nationwide Swedish Fracture Register (SFR). Patient sample: All adult patients in the SFR who underwent treatment for a subaxial cervical fracture (n = 1,963). Outcome measures: Analyzed variables included age, sex, injury mechanism, neurological function, fracture characteristics, and treatment type. The primary endpoints were 30-days, 90-days, and 1-year mortality. Methods: About 1,963 patients in the SFR, treated for subaxial cervical fractures between 2013 and 2021, were analyzed. Surgical procedures included anterior, posterior, or anteroposterior approaches. Nonsurgical treatment included collar treatment or medical examinations without intervention. Stepwise regression and Cox regression analysis were used to determine predictors. Model performance was tested using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: A total of 620 patients underwent surgery and 1,343 received nonsurgical treatment. Surgical cases had primarily translation fractures, with 323 (52%) displaying no neurological deficits. Mortality rates at 30 days, 90 days, and 1 year were 22/620 (3.5%), 35/620 (5.6%), and 53/620 (8.5%), respectively. Age and SCI were predictors of mortality. Nonsurgically treated patients mostly had compression fracture, with 1,214 (90%) experiencing no neurological deficits. Mortality rates at 30 days, 90 days, and 1 year were 41/1,343 (3.1%), 71/1,343 (5.3%), and 118/1,343 (8.7%). Age, male sex, SCI and fractures occurring at the C3 or C6 levels were predictors of mortality. An intact neurological function was a positive predictor of survival among nonsurgically treated patients (AUC >0.78). Conclusions: Age and SCI emerged as significant predictors of early mortality in both surgically and nonsurgically treated patients. An intact neurological function served as a protective factor against early mortality in nonsurgically treated patients. Fractures at C3 or C6 vertebrae may impact mortality.
Comparison of Age and Modified Frailty Index-5 as Predictors of In-Hospital Mortality in Complete Traumatic Cervical Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract:Abstract Frailty, as measured by the modified frailty index-5 (mFI-5), and older age are associated with increased mortality in the setting of spinal cord injury (SCI). However, a comparison of the predictive power of each measure has not been completed. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate in-hospital mortality among adult complete cervical SCI patients at participating centers of the Trauma Quality Improvement Program from 2010 to 2018. Logistic regression was used to predict in-hospital mortality, and the area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (AUROC) of regression models with age, mFI-5, or age with mFI-5 was used to compare predictive power. 4,733 patients were eligible. We found significant effect of age > 75 years (OR 9.77 95% CI [7.21 13.29]) and mFI-5 ≥ 2 (OR 3.09 95% CI [1.85 4.99]) on in-hospital mortality. The AUROC of a model including age and mFI-5 (0.81 95%CI [0.79 0.84] AUROC) was comparable to a model with age alone (0.81 95%CI [0.79 0.83] AUROC). Both models were superior to a model with mFI-5 alone (0.75 95% CI [0.72 0.77] AUROC)). Our findings suggest that age provides more predictive power than mFI-5 in the prediction of in-hospital mortality for complete cervical SCI.
