Impacts of Human Activities on the Spatial Distribution of Soil Organic Carbon

Abstract:In order to study the effects of long-term fertilization and human activities on the spatial variability of soil organic carbon, we studied the spatial variability of organic carbon content, organic carbon density and carbon pool activity at 0- 100 cm soil depths in Guanzhong area. The results indicated that the range of soil organic carbon contents was 7.00- 23.39 g kg-1, which presented an obvious but medium variability. Affected by the process and characteristics of soil development, the contents of organic carbon and active organic carbon of Lou soil decreased gradually from top to deeper soil layers(at 0- 100 cm soil depth), rather than the "T" type distribution. On the contrary, the carbon pool activity showed an increasing trend. Soil organic carbon contents diminished radially from villages(as the center) to the places far away, especially in the 0- 20 cm soil layer. Soil organic carbon density at 0-100 cm depth increased firstly and then decreased with the increase of distance from the village. The main conclusion drawn from the test was that spatial variability of soil organic carbon pool was subjected to long-term human fertilization and became one of effectively corroborations of the agricultural civilization development in Guanzhong area.
