Abstract:Over the past 60 years, the climate of East Antarctica cooled while portions of West Antarctica were among the most rapidly warming regions on the planet. The East Antarctic cooling is attributed to a positive trend in the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and a strengthening of the westerlies, while West Antarctic warming is tied to zonally asymmetric circulation changes forced by the tropics. This study finds recent (post-1979) surface cooling of East Antarctica during austral autumn to also be tied to tropical forcing, namely, an increase in La Niña events. The recent increase in La Niña conditions forces a Rossby wave into the Southern Hemisphere that increases anticyclonic circulation over the South Atlantic. The South Atlantic anticyclone is associated with cold air advection, weakened northerlies, and increased sea ice concentrations across the western East Antarctic coast, which has increased the rate of cooling at Novolazarevskaya and Syowa stations after 1979. This enhanced cooling over western East Antarctica is tied more broadly to a zonally asymmetric temperature trend pattern across East Antarctica during autumn that is consistent with a tropically forced Rossby wave rather than a SAM pattern; the positive SAM pattern is associated with ubiquitous cooling across East Antarctica, which is not seen in temperature observations after 1979. We conclude that El Niño–Southern Oscillation-related circulation anomalies, particularly zonal asymmetries that locally enhance meridional wind, are an important component of East Antarctic climate variability during autumn, and future changes in tropical Pacific climate will likely have implications for East Antarctica.

Decadal Variations in the Meridional Thermal Contrast in East Asia and Its Adjacent Regions: Relative Roles of External Forcing and Internal Variability

Abstract:Against the backdrop of global warming, the Eurasian continent and its surrounding areas have experienced ununiform warming in recent decades. Variations in the meridional thermal contrast (MTC) in East Asia and its adjacent regions have a critical influence on the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM); therefore, its forcings were analyzed in this study. The results show that the MTC in East Asia and the surrounding regions showed significant decadal changes during the interval 1960-2014, with a decadal strengthening in the late 1970s and a decadal weakening in the late 1990s. Further investigation showed that internal variability was the dominant control on these two decadal changes of MTC, accounting for 135% and 78.5% of the two observed changes in the 1970s and 1990s, respectively. Based on pacemaker experiments and a method that reconstructs decadal changes in the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO), we found that a positive phase of the IPO tends to cause cooling in the low latitudes and warming in the mid-high latitudes and that a negative phase of the IPO tends to cause warming in the low latitudes and cooling in the mid-high latitudes, which in turn can explain 54.4% and 35.8% of the two internally generated decadal changes in the MTC, respectively. The Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO), when in the same phase as the IPO, exhibits an opposing pattern of surface air temperature. This only had a significant influence in the late 1990s, where it explained 37.9% of the internally generated decadal changes in the MTC. Our findings highlight that internal variability, especially that relating to the IPO and the AMO, should be considered when predicting future changes in thermal conditions in East Asia and its adjacent regions.

Abstract:The uncertainties in Antarctic climate reconstructions due to scarcity of proxy records have restricted the understanding of mechanisms of climate change, and further hindered the improvement of climate models. Here, we provide a new climate record derived from water stable isotopes in a Dome A, East Antarctica ice core. Together with six other ice core records, the Dome A record is used to investigate temperature changes in East Antarctic Plateau (EAP) during period 1–1900 CE. Our results show that, a previously reported long term cooling trend in EAP during the recent (pre‐1900 CE) 1900 years is only robust between 550 and 1550 CE. A combination of solar and volcanic forcing may have induced the EAP centennial scale cold events, and further caused the long term cooling trend from 550 to 1550 CE with a small contribution from orbital forcing.

Two dominant factors governing the decadal cooling anomalies in winter in East China during the global hiatus period

Abstract:Observational analyses reveal substantial cooling anomalies in East China, during the global hiatus period (1998–2013), particularly in winter. The factors contributing to the winter cooling anomalies and the underlying mechanisms are studied. The results highlight the substantial roles played by two factors: Arctic sea ice reduction (i.e., sea ice area in Barents‐Kara Seas, SIA) and the SST cooling anomalies in the Kuroshio extension region (KSST). Together, these factors contribute to approximate 90% of the trend anomaly of East China's area averaged surface air temperature (ECT). The individual contributions from SIA and KSST are investigated based on observational diagnostic analyses and sensitivity experiments. The results show that the contributions from the two factors are similar. Both SIA and KSST induce intensified geopotential height over the mid–to–high latitudes of the Eurasian continent, with the maximum over the Ural Mountains extending toward Lake Baikal. These anomalies intensify the Ural blocking activities and Mongolian cold high. Meanwhile, both forcings cause negative 500–hPa geopotential height (Z500) anomalies over the central North Pacific that extend westward to East Asia, intensifying the climatological East Asian grand trough. However, KSST causes positive Z500 anomalies over the Bering Sea, but SIA does not. The enhanced Ural blocking activities and the deepened East Asian grand trough jointly favor the intensification of the East Asian winter monsoon, thus causing cooling anomalies in East China.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO; Madden & Julian, 1972) is the leading mode of intraseasonal variability in the tropics that has significant impacts on the global weather-climate system (Zhang, 2005, 2013). Its planetary-scale convective envelope propagates eastward over the Maritime Continent (MC) area at about 5 m s. The MJO signal has a notable seasonal variability (Zhang & Dong, 2004), and is strong during the northwesterly monsoon season (Kikuchi et al., 2012). While the MJO propagates over the MC area, its convective anomaly is often centered south of the equator, with the strongest signal being found over the marginal seas (Kim et al., 2017; Ling et al., 2019; Napitu et al., 2015; Zhang & Ling, 2017).
Decadal modulation of the Atlantic Meridional Mode on the West Antarctic climate during austral winter

Abstract:Based on observations and simplified, comprehensive atmospheric models, we investigate the impact of the tropical Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) on the West Antarctic temperature and sea ice concentration in austral winter (June-August) on decadal timescales. The tropical gradient SST anomaly (SSTA) associated with the positive phase of the Atlantic Meridional Mode (AMM) usually leads to cool anomalies over the Antarctic Peninsula (AP) and a dipole-like sea ice distribution, with ice growth in the Amundsen-Bellingshausen Sea and loss in the Ross Sea. When the AMM is in a positive phase, upward motion over the warm region in the North Atlantic and downward motion over the cold region in the South Atlantic strengthen the Southern Hemisphere Hadley cell, resulting in upper-level convergence over the southwestern Atlantic. This convergence induces a Rossby wave, leading to an anticyclone anomaly over the Amundsen-Bellingshausen Sea. Meridional component winds of this anticyclone anomaly are associated with wind-driven sea ice drift, temperature advection, and anomalous turbulence heat fluxes, leading to a dipole-like sea ice distribution and AP cooling. These findings are verified using two types of atmospheric models. Therefore, the AMM plays a vital role in modulating the decadal change in temperature and sea ice distribution in the West Antarctic.

Abstract:During the 1979-2013 satellite observation period, the sea surface temperature (SST) has cooled substantially in the high-latitude Southern Ocean, with the most pronounced cooling tendency centered in the southeastern Pacific domain. Previous hypotheses have commonly ascribed the recent Southern Ocean cooling to either the tropical eastern Pacific cooling or North Atlantic and tropical Indian Ocean SST warming. However, the mechanisms underpinning significant cooling in the southeastern Pacific sector remain debatable. By diagnosing three pacemaker experiments with a state-of-the-art global climate model in which SSTs in the North Atlantic, tropical central-eastern Pacific, and tropical Indian Ocean-western Pacific are individually nudged to mimic the observed trajectory, we show that the North Atlantic dominates in the cold SST response of the southeastern Pacific sector during 1979-2013. Anomalous North Atlantic warming initiates a quasi-stationary Rossby wave response to a south-to-north cross-equatorial Hadley circulation strengthening, leading to an enhanced Amundsen Sea Low. As a result, due primarily to the increased low-level marine cloud cover, the net surface shortwave radiation reduction triggers rapid SST cooling in the southeastern Pacific domain. The southeastern Pacific cold SST anomalies are further maintained via the shortwave radiation-low-cloud-SST positive feedback on decadal timescales. Our results suggest that the shortwave radiation-low-cloud SST feedback is fundamental to the observed long-term cooling of the high-latitude Southern Ocean, with profound climate consequences worldwide.
The role of Arctic sea ice loss in the interdecadal trends of the East Asian summer monsoon in a warming climate

Abstract:The East Asian summer monsoon precipitation has exhibited a well-known "southern China flood and northern China drought" pattern in recent decades. The increase in aerosols and warming oceans are recognized as two important forcings that control of the precipitation trends over East Asian land. However, in this study, by using large ensemble simulations from the CMIP6 Polar Amplification Model Intercomparison Project (PAMIP), the influence of Arctic amplification, serving as the prominent feature of global warming, is very important in modulating the East Asian summer precipitation pattern, which is comparable to the influence of sea surface temperature (SST). Additionally, the observed "southern China flood and northern China drought" pattern only exists in July and August, whereas a triple pattern with the precipitation positive anomaly center over Middle China occurs in June. These patterns are closely connected with the regional differences in Arctic sea ice loss from June to July, affected through both the Rossby waves propagating in a weaker westerly jet and the decrease in the large-scale meridional thermal contrast in a warming climate.

Understanding Sea Surface Temperature Cooling in the central‐east Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean during 1982‐2020

Abstract:Sea surface temperature (SST) in the Southern Ocean plays an important role in air‐sea interactions, forcing atmospheric variability. Using various observational and reanalysis datasets, we show that the SST cooling trend in the Southern Ocean (50oS‐70oS) continues (∼0.3oC from 1982 to 2020). The largest SST cooling trend is in the central‐east Pacific sector, which can extend to 250 meters. A detailed trend analysis for the mixed layer heat budget equation suggests that changes in the net surface shortwave radiation and Ekman horizontal advection are the two key contributors, though the other processes contribute to the SST cooling trend in winter and spring. The reduced downward solar radiation is largely due to the increase of cloud cover, which enhances shortwave‐cloud‐radiative feedback and decreases SST. Changes in Ekman advection associated with increased zonal winds is in favor of the colder water remaining in upper ocean layer.

Abstract:Enhanced warming in the Arctic (Arctic amplification, AA) in the last decades has been linked to several factors including sea ice and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). However, how these factors contributed to AA variations in a long-term perspective remains unclear. By reconstructing a millennial AA index combining climate model simulations with recently available proxy data, this work determines the important influences of the AMO and anthropogenic greenhouse gas forcing on AA variations in the last millennium, leading to identification of a significant downward trend of AA on top of a sustained strong AMO modulation at the multidecadal scales. The decreased AA during the industrial era was strongly associated with the anthropogenic forcing, proving the emerging role of the forcing in reducing the AA strength.
Impacts of Antarctic Sea Ice Oscillation on Summer Atmospheric Circulation in the Northern Hemisphere

Abstract:The primary mode of empirical orthogonal function of Antarctic sea ice is a dipole anomaly, with the positive and negative anomaly centers over the Bellingshausen/Amundsen Sea and the Weddell Sea, respectively. This dipole anomaly is known as the Antarctic sea ice oscillation or Antarctic dipole. Previous studies have shown that the Antarctic sea ice oscillation in austral winter and spring has a significant effect on the subsequent Antarctic oscillation（AAO）-type atmospheric circulation, which significantly impacts the Northern Hemisphere climate and East Asian summer monsoon.This empirical study further examines the remote effects of the May–June–July（MJJ） Antarctic sea ice oscillation on the boreal summer atmospheric circulation in the Northern Hemisphere and the associated physical processes. Results showed that the Antarctic sea ice dipole anomaly has good persistence around austral winter from MJJ to July–August–September,which triggers persistent AAO-like atmospheric responses in the troposphere and lower stratosphere with the increase in the pressure gradient between middle and high latitudes. Moreover, the latitudinal mean zonal wind exhibits a significant distribution of meridional teleconnection from the South Pole to the North Pole. In the middle troposphere, the 700-hPa geopotential height field exhibits significant negative anomalies from northern Australia to the maritime continent, a significant positive anomaly center near Japan, and a band-shaped negative anomaly near the Sea of Okhotsk and the Aleutian Islands when the atmosphere lags behind the sea ice anomaly by 0 to 2 months. It is another form of meridional teleconnection, except for the zonal wind. Significant negative precipitation and sea surface temperature anomalies are detected in the equatorial central Pacific and the Indian Ocean, and significant positive precipitation anomalies from the northern Maritime Continent to eastern coastal China. Furthermore, the negative geopotential height anomaly from the subtropical North America to the western Atlantic and the positive geopotential height anomaly center over the North Atlantic constitute a structure similar to the western Atlantic（WA） teleconnection. Significant positive precipitation anomalies in the tropical southern Atlantic and negative precipitation anomalies over the Sahara are detected. In terms of the physical mechanism, the Antarctic sea ice dipole first affects the Ferrel circulation through local forcing effects. In turn, the ascending branch of Hadley circulation over the oceanic continental region and Tropical Atlantic is enhanced by the meridional circulation adjustment. Then, the negative phase of the Pacific Japan wave train and WA teleconnection excited by the enhanced tropical convection affects the atmospheric circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The strong tropical convection activity in the oceanic continental region（particularly near the Philippines） and Tropical Atlantic serves as a bridge to transmit the forced tropical signals to boreal summer East Asia–North Pacific, North Atlantic–Europe, and other middle-latitude and high-latitude regions in the Northern Hemisphere. These results indicate that the persistent Antarctic sea ice oscillation anomaly from MJJ to August–September–October has significant impacts on the summer atmospheric circulation in the tropics and Northern Hemisphere.
The Weakened Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Diminishes Recent Arctic Sea Ice Loss

Abstract:The Arctic sea ice has been rapidly dwindling over the past four decades, significantly impacting the Arctic region and beyond. During the same period, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) was also found in a declining trend. Here we investigate the role of the AMOC in the recent Arctic sea ice changes by comparing simulations from the Community Climate System Model version 4 with decelerated and stationary AMOCs under anthropogenic climate change. We find that the weakened AMOC can slow down the decline rates of Arctic sea ice area and volume by 36% and 22% between 1980 and 2020, respectively. The decelerated ocean circulation causes a reduction of northward Atlantic heat transport and hence a general interior ocean cooling in the Arctic Mediterranean, which helps alleviate the Arctic sea ice loss primarily through thermodynamic processes occurring at the base of the sea ice.

Abstract:Research on the evolution and driving mechanisms of East Asian monsoon (EAM) precipitation during the past millennium has received considerable attention. Previous studies have focused on comparisons between relative mean dry/wet conditions and those linked to the Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies during the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and the Little Ice Age (LIA); however, uncertainties remain regarding the relationship between precipitation changes and Pacific SST anomalies under sub-cool internal conditions within the LIA. Herein, we present a composite high-resolution monsoon precipitation record (from 1400 CE to the present) based on chroma and median grain size data from Lake Nvshan sediments in the Jiang-Huai (JH) region, central eastern China. The results indicate that more (less) precipitation in the JH region could be associated with the warm (cold) Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) phase on inter-decadal scales. We also observed an enhanced modulating effect of the PDO on JH precipitation during the late LIA. These changes in the modulating effect were likely a response to enhanced PDO amplitudes induced by increased effective radiative forcing.

Abstract:Abrupt changes in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) are thought to affect tropical hydroclimate through adjustment of the latitudinal position of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1) involves the largest AMOC reduction in recent geological time; however, over the tropical Indian Ocean (IO), proxy records suggest zonal anomalies featuring intense, widespread drought in tropical East Africa versus generally wet but heterogeneous conditions in the Maritime Continent. Here, we synthesize proxy data and an isotope-enabled transient deglacial simulation and show that the southward ITCZ shift over the eastern IO during HS1 strengthens IO Walker circulation, triggering an east-west precipitation dipole across the basin. This dipole reverses the zonal precipitation anomalies caused by the exposed Sunda and Sahul shelves due to glacial lower sea level. Our study illustrates how zonal modes of atmosphere-ocean circulation can amplify or reverse global climate anomalies, highlighting their importance for future climate change.

Ozone-aerosol and land use reversed temperature increase over some northern mid-latitude regions between the 20th century and the Little Ice Age based on the CESM-LME

Abstract:Global warming is a widely concerned topic, and the surface temperature has shown an accelerated warming trend during the past several decades. From the perspective of a longer time scale, the 20th century (1900–2000) could be the warmest period in the last millennium, and the global or hemispheric averaged temperature over this period is higher than that over other centuries, particularly compared with that over the Little Ice Age (LIA; 1450–1850). However, we recently found that, in the reconstruction, the 20th-century temperature over some northern mid-latitude regions could be significantly lower than that during the LIA, which contradicts our previous perceptions regarding global warming. Modeling results from the Last Millennium Ensemble Project also reproduce a similar phenomenon, that is, the 20th-century cooling over some northern mid-latitude regions (CNMR). The simulated CNMR can be found in all four seasons. Further analysis indicates that the cooling effects from ozone-aerosol and land use forcings, overcoming greenhouse gas and solar forcing induced warming, play dominant roles in causing the CNMR. The ozone-aerosol forcing reduces the surface net shortwave flux through both direct aerosol–radiation interaction and atmosphere–cloud feedback, while the land use forcing causes negative net shortwave flux anomalies through modulation of surface albedo. Overall, the ozone-aerosol and land use forcings shape the CNMR phenomenon by inducing anomalous surface net shortwave flux, with the ozone-aerosol forcing playing a dominant role. This study highlights the important influences of ozone-aerosol and land use cooling effects on local climate.

Abstract:As climate change has occurred over east Asia since the 1950s, intense interest and debate have arisen concerning the contribution of human activities to the observed warming in past decades. In this study, we investigate regional surface temperature change during the boreal cold season using a recently developed methodology that can successfully identify and separate the dynamically induced temperature (DIT) and radiatively forced temperature (RFT) changes in raw surface air temperature (SAT) data. For regional averages, DIT and RFT contribute 44 and 56% to the SAT over east Asia, respectively. The DIT changes dominate the SAT decadal variability and are mainly determined by internal climate variability, represented by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO). Radiatively forced SAT changes have made a major contribution to the global-scale warming trend and the regional-scale enhanced semi-arid warming (ESAW). Such enhanced warming is also found in radiatively forced daily maximum and minimum SAT. The long-term global-mean SAT warming trend is mainly related to radiative forcing produced by global well-mixed greenhouse gases. The regional anthropogenic radiative forcing, however, caused the enhanced warming in the semi-arid region, which may be closely associated with local human activities. Finally, the relationship between the so-called "global warming hiatus" and regional enhanced warming is discussed.
Radiative forced enhanced semi-arid warming in cold 1 season over East Asia

Abstract:37 As the climate change occurred over East Asia since 1950s, intense interest and 38 debate have arisen concerning the contribution of human activities to the warming 39 observed in previous decades. In this study, we investigate regional surface temperature 40 change using a recently developed methodology that can successfully identify and 41 separate the dynamically induced temperature (DIT) and radiatively forced temperature 42 (RFT) changes in raw surface air temperature (SAT) data. For regional averages, DIT and 43 RFT make 43.7 and 56.3% contributions to the SAT over East Asia, respectively. The 44 DIT changes dominate the SAT decadal variability and are mainly determined by internal 45 climate variability, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Pacific Decadal 46 Oscillation (PDO), and Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO). The radiatively forced 47 SAT changes made major contribution to the global-scale warming trend and the 48 regional-scale enhanced semi-arid warming (ESAW). Such enhanced warming is also 49 found in radiatively forced daily maximum and minimum SAT. The long-term 50 global-mean SAT warming trend is mainly related to radiative forcing produced by 51 global well-mixed greenhouse gases. The regional anthropogenic radiative forcing, 52 however, caused the enhanced warming in the semi-arid region, which may be closely 53 associated with local human activities. Finally, the relationship between global warming 54 hiatus and regional enhanced warming is discussed. 55
Winter Eurasian cooling linked with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze observational and reanalysis data to demonstrate that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) significantly modulates winter Eurasian surface air temperature through its impact on the shape, frequency and persistence of Ural blocking (UB) events that last for 10-20 d. This impact results from changes in mid-high latitude westerly winds over Eurasia associated with the warming in the Barents-Kara Seas (BKS) through the AMO-driven high sea surface temperature and sea-ice decline and resultant weakening in meridional temperature gradients. The BKS warming has a strongest positive correlation with the AMO at a time lag of about 14 years. During the recent positive AMO phase, more persistent northwest-southeast (NW-SE) oriented UB events are favored by weakened westerly winds in Eurasian mid-high latitudes. Through cold atmospheric advection and radiative cooling, such UB events produce a strong, persistent and widespread cooling over Eurasia and enhance BKS warming during 1999-2015. However, the positive AMO phase cannot directly produce the Eurasian cooling if the UB is absent. Thus, we conclude that the recent AMO phase change is a major cause of the recent winter cooling over Eurasia through its impact on BKS temperature and sea ice, which in turn affect the meridional temperature gradient, the westerly winds and the UB events.

Abstract:The effect of the Madden‐Julian oscillation (MJO) on springtime Antarctic ozone variations is revealed for the first time from multi‐satellite reanalysis and model simulations. 20‐30 days after MJO Phase 8 (P8), Antarctic total column ozone (TCO) anomalies significantly decrease by up to ‐15 DU, associated with a wave‐1 response at around 60°S. After MJO P8, MJO‐related geopotential height anomalies in the southern hemispheric (SH) Indian Ocean emanate from subtropics to polar regions, leading to suppressed upward and poleward propagation of planetary waves (PWs) and weakened Brewer‐Dobson circulation in the SH stratosphere. This in turn results in less ozone transport from midlatitudes into the polar region, and thus a negative polar TCO response. Dynamical transport plays a dominant role in modulating the Antarctic TCO after MJO P8. The magnitude of transient changes due to chemical processes is relatively weak than that caused by dynamical transport.

Decadal shifts of East Asian summer monsoon in a climate model free of explicit GHGs and aerosols

Abstract:The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) experienced decadal transitions over the past few decades, and the associated "wetter-South-drier-North" shifts in rainfall patterns in China significantly affected the social and economic development in China. Two viewpoints stand out to explain these decadal shifts, regarding the shifts either a result of internal variability of climate system or that of external forcings (e.g. greenhouse gases (GHGs) and anthropogenic aerosols). However, most climate models, for example, the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP)-type simulations and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP)-type simulations, fail to simulate the variation patterns, leaving the mechanisms responsible for these shifts still open to dispute. In this study, we conducted a successful simulation of these decadal transitions in a coupled model where we applied ocean data assimilation in the model free of explicit aerosols and GHGs forcing. The associated decadal shifts of the three-dimensional spatial structure in the 1990s, including the eastward retreat, the northward shift of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH), and the south-cool-north-warm pattern of the upper-level tropospheric temperature, were all well captured. Our simulation supports the argument that the variations of the oceanic fields are the dominant factor responsible for the EASM decadal transitions.
