Abstract:This study presents a rapid, spatially precise, and comprehensive assessment of the far-reaching impact resulting from the recent demolition of the Kakhovka Dam in Ukraine, leveraging multi-source high-resolution satellite imagery and advanced remote sensing techniques. The findings highlight the extensive downstream flooding (742.58 km2), which includes approximately 62,303 people exposed and 2,361 buildings submerged, with increased effects in buffer zones, and significant damage to 539.84 km2 of herbaceous wetlands in the Dnipro River area. Moreover, we observed a substantial reduction in water storage upstream (177.53 billion m3, approximately 97% of the reservoir’s capacity). Our estimates underscore the potential threat to downstream water supplies and the functioning of the Zaporizhzhia plant, the largest nuclear plant in Europe. Our research emphasizes the immediate need for coordinated action to manage the unfolding crisis and sets an example for future studies that use similar methodologies in conflict regions to enable rapid and effective responses.

Abstract:Assessing habitat and biodiversity loss in active conflict zones is a major challenge 1 . Independent scientific evidence on wartime impacts is essential to inform the environmental priorities of reconstruction and recovery plans. Such plans are typically developed during the conflict resolution period 2 . However, evidence to shape biodiversity recovery plans has historically emerged many years after resolution and reconstruction 2 . The combination of remote sensing capabilities, the availability of global environmental data and impact zone modelling now enable rapid assessments of wartime environmental impacts. Here, we describe an early scientific assessment of the potential environmental impact caused by the Kakhovka Dam breach during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and highlight the need to build on this initial evidence to inform biodiversity recovery plans in the region. The Kakhovka Dam is located on the lower Dnipro River in the Kherson region of Ukraine, an internationally recognized biodiversity hotspot that currently lies at the 'front line' of the ongoing conflict. On 6 June 2023, the dam — which provides water for the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant — suffered a catastrophic breach. The cause of the breach is disputed. In the immediate aftermath, the international community understandably focused on addressing humanitarian impacts of displaced communities, and disruption and contamination of drinking water supplies. In the days following the breach, limited evidence was publicly available through which to assess the scale of the impact on downstream habitats.

Abstract:Introduction: Complex mineral mining leads to critical earth's surface disturbance and environmental pollution from industrial waste. This research aims to comprehensively study, assess and show the current scale of the earth's surface disturbances in the largest mining region of Ukraine – the Kryvyi Rih. Iron-ore Basin and suggests ways to improve the situation based on backfill technologies for the earth's surface rehabilitation and industrial waste utilization. Methods: To identify the forms of surface disturbance, their parameters, and spatial location, satellite images of the region, government statistical data, and a geographic information system software suite were studied. An analysis of the effectiveness of existing reclamation measures for technogenic voids in the region was carried out, and a new concept of surface restoration was proposed using beneficiation tailings, which are difficult to utilize in the region. Results: It has been determined that the contribution of the Kryvyi Rih Iron-ore Basin to waste generation is 92.08% of the total volume of waste accumulations in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and 65.5% in Ukraine as a whole, amounting to 10.7 billion tons. It is determined that 65.25% of the total disturbed land area is industrial waste, 34.76% – quarry cavities and mine failure zones, occupying 49% of the Kryvyi Rih city area. An analysis of waste accumulation density in allotted areas shows that per 1 m 2 of land area, on average, 183.5 tons of dump waste rocks and 73.5 tons of beneficiation tailings are placed. Disposal of beneficiation tailings is recognized as a priority, because their utilization is slower, occupy the largest area, creating a risk of dams breaching and intense dusting from tailings dams surface, threatening the environment and public health. For the first time in Ukraine, a concept for the earth's surface rehabilitation for various industrial purposes has been developed based on paste backfill technologies. Discussion: Paste backfill technology implementation is prioritized in the central and northern parts of the city, which can dispose of at least 65–70 million tons of waste in cavities and reclaim about 200 ha of land. The research results are valuable for the development of strategies or programs to overcome the technogenic-ecological crisis in the city. The rehabilitated earth's surface can be usefully involved in various infrastructure projects for the development of the industrial and economic potential of an industrial city such as Kryvyi Rih.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This article is aimed at revealing the theme of the Chornobyl disaster as an apocalypse in the lyrical works of Ukrainian poets. The prerequisites for the development of the phenomenon of the “post-Chornobyl library” are revealed, the works of outstanding sixtiers (Ivan Drach, Lina Kostenko, Borys Oliynyk, and Dmytro Pavlychko) are considered, the elements that are called to the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant are highlighted, and an imagery analysis of the selected works is carried out. Discourses about the catastrophe, apocalypse, and postapocalypse are highlighted to demonstrate Chornobyl, in lyrics and lyrical epic, as the largest man-made environmental and humanitarian tragedy. The connection between the Chornobyl discourse in literature and criticism of the Soviet regime as a manifestation of inhumanity and totalitarianism is revealed. An array of ecological poetry of lesser-known authors is processed and their contribution to the poetry of the paradigm is indicated, and a detailed analysis of the ecological lyrics of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries by authors Nina Hnatiuk, Tetiana Yakovenko, and Valentyna Storozhuk is carried out.

Ecological Safety and Balanced Use of Resources

Abstract:Pollution of the atmosphere, soil, and water resources in Ukraine resulting from the Russian-Ukrainian war is a problem that requires immediate resolution, as the ecocide’s consequences on the environment will be long-lasting and have a global impact. The aim of the study was to analyse the impact of active military actions on the atmospheric air, water resources of Kharkiv and Kharkiv Region, and the soils of the Ivory Coast of Sviatoslav National Nature Park in Mykolaiv Region by assessing their eco-geochemical state. The study of the impact of fires on the soil properties of the Ivory Coast of Sviatoslav National Nature Park using potentiometric, luminescence-bituminological, and spectrofluorometric methods revealed that the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is the highest in pyrogenic areas, where low molecular weight PAHs are predominant; high molecular weight PAHs are also present, indicating recent burning of the territory. It was found that the PAH content is lower at microelevations. The aspiration method was used to investigate the atmosphere. It was shown that the level of air pollution in Kharkiv is low at all observation points, with a level of less than 5 on the scale of the air pollution index. It was found that the largest number of exceedances in the water bodies of the Kharkiv Region was recorded for such pollutants as sulphates (recorded at 17 points), ammonium nitrogen (at 16 points), biochemical oxygen demand (at 14 points), and dissolved oxygen (at 11 points). In all the most polluted water bodies, the maximum permissible concentration exceedances were recorded for 4, 3, and 2 hydrochemical indicators. The study results can be used in practice by ecologists to develop and implement measures to improve the ecological condition of the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine

Abstract:Extraction of minerals significantly affects the hydrogeological conditions of the environment. Active development of mining operations in the Donbas region determined the dominant influence of technogenic changes in geological environment on the formation of modern ecological conditions in the region. This applies not only to coal mining but also raw materials extraction (dolomites, limestone) for metallurgical plants mostly by quarrying. Recently, a significant environmental problem in the region has been the mines and quarries closure, envisaged by the program for restructuring the coal industry of Ukraine. Closure of mines or quarries through wet-based conservation is the least financially expensive, although it significantly increases the technogenic load on the natural environment. The object of research involved groundwater and surface water within the area of the Stylskyi and Skhidnyi (Vostochnyi) quarries of the “Dokuchaevsk flux-dolomite complex” PJSC, as well as Kipucha Krynytsa and Shevchenkivskyi water intake structures. The goal of research was to forecast changes in the hydrogeological conditions under the influence of wet-based conservation of the Stylskyi quarry. To achieve this goal, hydrogeological methods, mathematical modelling, and expert assessments were used. Consequently, a hydrogeological model of the research area was created, its functional correspondence to the natural-anthropogenic conditions was confirmed, and calculation hydrogeological parameters were specified. As a result, the forecast of changes in the hydrogeological conditions under the influence of wet-based conservation of the Stylskyi quarry was made. In particular, the following issues were determined: the dynamics of quarry flooding; the influence of this process on changes in water inflows to the Skhidnyi (Vostochnyi) quarry, Kipucha Krynytsa and Shevchenkivskyi water intake structures; possible flooding of settlements and swamping of the research area; changes in chemical composition and groundwater salinity; time of quarry draining at various intensity of water outflow to resume mineral production in case of need. We would like to emphasize that the forecasts made should be used when designing partial or full flooding of the Stylskyi quarry.

Abstract:We studied the development of commercial and recreational fishing on the Kakhovske Reservoir (aka Kakhovka) and the Dnipro (aka Dnieper) River lowlands in 2020–2023. The fish assemblage of the Kakhovske Reservoir is under consideration for the period 1956–2021. The dynamics of the fish population transformation, species extinction, and the emergence of new invasive species are given. The losses in Kakhovske Reservoir's ecosystem services as a result of the Kakhovska Hydroelectric Power Plant's (HPP) Dam explosion in June 2023 are analyzed. The states and prospects for local recreational and commercial fishing development are assessed. By field research and monitoring observations of the Kakhovske Reservoir and the Dnipro River lowland using the Earth remote sensing data, it was established that 2 months after the accident, the area of the remained reservoir water surface was ∼430 km 2 (about 19% of the initial, including the restored Dnipro River bed). The newly formed shallow waterbodies, which do not have a water connection between each other, occupy an area of about 300 km 2 . These areas continue to dry out, shrink, and become overgrown with vegetation. The draining of the Kakhovske Reservoir caused an ecological disaster for about 40 species and subspecies of fish. The total monetary losses of commercial fishing are about 40 million). The negative consequences of the loss of the Kakhovske Reservoir aquatic ecosystems will affect the socio-economic development of the entire South of Ukraine for a long time. Among the major ecosystem services lost is the cessation of water supply. Ukraine's priority issues are the post-war rehabilitation of the country, its degraded lands, territories, and water areas, and ensuring water and food security. One of the urgent problems will be the feasibility of reconstruction of the Kakhovska HPP's Dam and restoration of the Reservoir, renovation of water supply, fishery, navigation, energy, and recreation. Biodiversity is a basis for the efficient and sustainable ecosystem functions that provide many ecosystem services, and it should be considered for the post-war recovery and development of Ukraine.

Abstract:. The presented research focuses on the pressing issues of restoration of land areas disturbed by mining operations. The paper studies legislative peculiarities of industrial waste utilization for the purpose of reclamation of disturbed lands in Ukraine. Real practical examples of using low-hazard industrial waste for reclamation of land areas disturbed by quarrying and failure zones are analyzed. It is noted that, provided that all legal and sanitary requirements are met, low-hazard class IV waste can be used at the mining-technical stage of quarry reclamation. Aspects of the prospects for restoring the earth’s surface level are clarified based on the development of directions for the backfill mass formation in technogenic cavities, which will provide stability and geomechanical reliability of the earth’s surface.

Abstract:Purpose. The purpose of the work was to present the degree of influence on the geoecological situation in the Donbas of abandoned mine workings that have been preserved at the outcrops of coal seams, and the currently existing methods for assessing this influence based on studies to establish patterns of deformation of the rock mass and the earth’s surface in the zone of influence of such workings. Methodology. The work uses archival materials from the history of the development of the Donbas coal industry and the results of analytical studies of this problem over the past twenty years. Results. According to the results of the research, a number of features and patterns of deformation of the rock mass and the earth’s surface in the zone of influence of abandoned mine workings have been established/ Scientific novelty. The scientific novelty consists in establishing the causes, conditions and patterns of deformation of the rock mass over abandoned mine workings at shallow depths and in creating a fundamentally new approach to assessing the degree of danger to the earth’s surface of abandoned mine workings. Practical significance. It is possible to use the results of the conducted studies and established patterns to assess the degree of danger of such workings for the earth’s surface in the zone of their influence, as well as to develop an appropriate methodology for their assessment. A dam or a polder? Stakeholders' dispute over the "right" flood-protection measure in the Czech Republic

Abstract:This study focuses on the Skalička Waterwork (SWW), a largely debated and media-covered water-related/flood-protection project in the Czech Republic. Relying primarily on stakeholder interviews, we traced back and reconstructed the project's development, including its key tipping points reflecting the changing societal preferences for particular measures, yet also the involvement of individual actors/stakeholders, and their differing views. The case eventually crystallized into the "dam versus polder" dispute; concerned by the repercussions for the local landscape, a joint initiative of NGOs, local activists, and politicians not only opposed the dam variant proposed by the state river basin administration but also succeeded in pushing through the alternative scheme of side dry polder. While in many ways specific (e.g. not entailing local resistance), the case exemplifies recent shifts (and respective struggles) within flood risk management, including the increasing importance attributed to complex, catchment-wide perspectives, joint local and scientific knowledge, participatory decision-making processes, or implementation of nature-based and hybrid solutions.

Abstract:Russian forces have destroyed one-third of Ukraine’s freshwater storage since February 2022 to 2024. Potable, industrial and irrigation water supplies have been cut across the south and east of the country. Overall, social, economic and ecological damages are estimated in the tens of billions of $US, while the loss of Ukraine’s economic potential and necessary investments in restoration reach $600 billion. We consider the current eco-economic efficiency of irrigated crops, as well as damage to commercial and recreational fisheries including losses of littoral areas and spawning grounds. Alternative water supplies for the war-torn regions by construction of wells to tap groundwater are presented and justified; various scientific opinions and approaches to ecosystem management and options for the future reconstruction of the Kakhovka Reservoir are discussed; and, finally, strategic development options for the water sector are considered to ensure water security in the post-war development period.

The Chernobyl explosion initiated the disintegration of the corrupt Communist regime—a regime which had been deemed unshakeable in the USSR.

Abstract:Any military action involves a number of risks for the existence of animals. In the event of the destruction of hydraulic structures, not only aquatic ecosystems usually suffer, but also the ecosystems of islands and banks. Undermining the dam of the Kakhovska hydroelectric power station had a wide range of negative impact on the life of animals. A number of its consequences manifested themselves immediately after the destruction of the dam connected with drainage of bottom sediments in some regions and flooding of the coast in others. But one should also expect the transformation of faunal complexes associated with long-term changes in the water regime, and in some regions with drying and moisture deficiency. The purpose of this work is to assess the species composition of birds whose populations will suffer population losses as a result of the Kakhovka catastrophe in the short and long term on a regional and global scale. The published lists of bird species for the territories affected by the Kakhovka catastrophe an analysis was made: for the Kakhovka reservoir, the 'Kinburn Kosa Regional Landscape Park, the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve; and for the registration of some rare species in the region. Questionable data was checked against an electronic database https://uabirds.org/. We assessed the species composition of birds whose populations may decrease in number as a result of the Kakhovka catastrophe in the near and long term. Problems of regional and global scale are considered. The status of residence and ecology of birds were taken into account. Birds affected as a result of the Kakhovka catastrophe were divided into 3 groups: І — 82 species — birds nesting in the region of the disaster and lost part of their populations this year. These are birds that build nests in aquatic vegetation, not high in trees, shrubs, on the ground on the islands; ІІ — 69 species — birds that will lose their habitats in the coming nesting seasons due to changes in the Dnieper channel, water regime and the development of devastation processes. These are limnophilous that inhabited the thickets of the coastline and the islands of the Dnieper; ІІІ — 121 species — birds that will lose habitats for feeding and shelter during migration and wintering. The number of not only populations that nest in Ukraine will suffer, but also those migrating from Europe and Asia. And a group of birds (33 species) that are unlikely to be affected. The catastrophe of the undermining of the dam of the Kakhovska hydroelectric power station harms the biodiversity and integrity of habitats on a large area of the banks of the lower reaches of the Dnieper. The effects of the disaster on natural communities will have a lasting impact. We predict a change in the biotopes of the existence of birds in the direction of degradation of wetlands and drainage of terrestrial ones, which will lead to a change in the species composition of birds in the region. Relevant in the future will be the study of the succession processes of ecosystems on the banks of the lower reaches of the Dnieper and changes in the communities of birds that inhabit them. The consequences of the catastrophe we have an impact on migratory bird species on a global scale.
Consequences of the Kakhovka Reservoir destruction for irrigation and water supply of the southern part of Ukraine

Abstract:The Kakhovka reservoir construction on the Dnipro River solved some issues: navigation, water supply and irrigation on the southern part of Ukraine and Crimea, electricity generation, flood control. Environmental problems, the historical layer destruction and social effect of the populated areas flooding were not taken into account. Water is taken from the Kakhovka Reservoir by the North-Crimean Canal, by the Kakhovka Irrigation Canal, and by the North Rogachyn, Upper-Tarasivka, and Nikopol irrigation systems. The total irrigated area of the more than 1.0 million ha was supplied from the Kakhovka Reservoir in the south of Ukraine including the Crimea. The Kakhovka Reservoir is the source of drinking water supply for the large cities of Nikopol, Marganets, Pokrov, Kryvyi Rih, Energodar, as well as the number of rural settlements in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and Crimea. The Kakhovka irrigation system is the largest automated irrigation system in Europe. The Kakhovka canal is the of water supply source for the Syirogozy, Chaplinka, and Pryazov irrigation systems. The canal provides centralized water supply of the Ivanivka group water supply system (20 rural settlements of the Kherson region with the total population of 26.8 thousand people), the Western group water supply system (water supply of the 492 thousand residents of Yakymivka, Melitopol, Pryazovske and Berdiansk districts, Kyrylivka and Pryazovske settlements, Berdiansk city, Prymorsk). The North Crimean Canal supplies water for the irrigation area of approximately 400,000 ha and to the water supply systems of Simferopol, Sevastopol, Yalta, Feodosia, Kerch and other Crimean settlements. The 7 reservoirs were built to regulate water storage in Crimea. The North Rohachyn irrigation system supplies water to 81,800 ha of agricultural fields. The Dnipro–Kryvyi Rih Canal is designed to provide water to the Kryvyi Rih industrial district and to water 14,700 ha of the Nikopol irrigation system. Nearby is the water intake of the Sofiivka group water supply system, which supplies water to 34 settlements in the Apostolove, Nikopol and Sofiivka districts. The consequences of the Kakhovka Reservoir destruction for water supply and irrigation in the south of Ukraine are significant: the decrease of irrigated land, agriculture damage; decline of river ports; water supply restrictions for industrial enterprises and population of southern Ukraine and Crimea; limitation of the electricity loads; the new decision for cooling system of the ZNPP; ecological changes in the Dnipro delta, salinization of the Dnipro-Bug estuary. Kakhovka Reservoir restoration is necessary condition for the development of southern Ukraine, which will require significant financial and human resources.

Abstract:Main effects of mining operations on the land and water resources while mineral mining are considered. Identify that intensive open-pit and underground development of mineral deposits has resulted in the disturbed natural environment, which, in turn, have changed geomorphological and hydrogeological structure of the region. Current stage of the disturbed land and water resources are determined in terms of Kryvyi Rih iron-ore basin. The analysis showed that аs a result of mining and technical activities in Kryvbas, minimum 15-20 mln ha of land are disturbed, 59 % of this area is used for different mine workings, 38 % is covered with waste rock dumping or waste from mineral concentration, and 3 % is the sites of subsidence, caving, and other land surface disturbances due to underground mining. Thus, about 1 km3 of drainage water is extracted annually during mineral extraction. As a result, natural landscapes have been replaced by new technogenic objects, which, in turn, have changed geomorphological and hydrogeological structure of the region. Key technological objects of the largest enterprises of Kryvbas mining industry as well as their parameters are studied. Dynamics of the accumulation of emissions and discharges of the production wastes of Kryvyi Rih iron-ore basin enterprises as well as their location are shown. Identify that by means of gross discharge of the contaminating substances. On average, more than 235.62 thous. t/year enter the air with the dust. Also identify that the largest mining enterprises of Kryvyi Rih Region discharge on average 2296.8 thous. m3/year of the contaminated water. Certain measures are proposed to facilitate reduction of the impact due to open-pit mining on the indicated environmental components. They are aimed at involve implementation of resource-saving technologies along with reclamation of the technogenic objects. Abstract:Russia's invasion of Ukraine has already caused pervasive pollution. To appreciate the scale of the problem, identify its causes and consequences, and develop strategies and practical counter measures, we present a comprehensive picture of soil pollution with more detailed analysis in Kharkiv, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. The intensity of contamination depends on location, industrial development and the course of military operations. In the east of the country, illegal dumping of chemical waste as well as active hostilities have caused significant soil contamination with heavy metals and oil products: Kharkiv region showed a 200% increase in cadmium contamination; Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions showed a 139% and 156% increase in oil spills; all with serious consequences for public and environmental health.

Abstract:Introduction. Russia annually produces about 400 thousand tons of Hazard Class I (extremely hazardous) and Hazard Class II (highly hazardous) wastes. Material and methods. The Program includes the study of the hazardous chemical pollution produced by the waste disposed at the Krasny Bor Landfill within a radius of 1-4 km over the period from 2009 to 2013. Samples of water, sediments, soil, and atmospheric air were analyzed by gas and liquid chromatography with highly sensitive detectors, as well as IR spectroscopy. Results. At all sampling sites, the air concentrations of priority pollutants characteristic of the waste disposed at the Landfill did not exceed the MAC level. Analysis of water and sediments from channels at the Landfill showed that the concentrations of a number of chemical pollutants at the border of the 1-km zone exceed the corresponding regulatory standards. Heavy pollution of wastewater and bottom sediments at the Landfill with some waste components, including organochlorine compounds, oil products, and heavy metals, as well as uneven pollution of soil in the 1-km zone from the Landfill in the northern and western directions, i.e. toward the potential residential development, with lead, copper, zinc, petroleum products, polychlorinated biphenyls, benzo[a]pyrene, and xylene isomers was revealed. Conclusion. The resulting data provides evidence for the adverse environmental impact of the Krasny Bor Landfill. The territory of the Landfill has been stabilized to allow further trouble-free development of a complex of measures on a scheduled basis.
