Abstract:Herein, we present a facile synthesis of hierarchical carbon frameworks with microporous skeletons and interconnected meso/macropores by employing poly(vinylidene chloride-co-methyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene copolymers as precursors. The obtained porosity can be tuned over a broad range via well-selected block proportions of the precursor, enabling its advantageous applications in target-oriented energy storage systems.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs) have well-defined porosities, high surface areas, and attractive surface chemical functionalities. Because of these properties, POPs and their derivatives, including their pyrolysis (carbonaceous) products, have broad applications in catalysis, absorption, separation, sensing, biomedical engineering, and energy storage/conversion. In particular, both the porosity and morphology of porous materials have crucial impacts on their performance. The controlled synthesis of morphological defined POPs via various assembly approaches offers an effective route to prepare novel nanomaterials with broad application scope in the above-mentioned fields. Therefore, a summary of recent research related to POPs will stimulate researchers to explore this field at a deeper level. This review provides a summary and analysis of progress in the last decade toward the development of morphologically controlled POPs. Established works and recent progress in the synthesis of these materials are first reviewed, followed by the systematic discussion of the methodologies and key parameters for the fabrication of diverse morphology-controlled POPs. The various emerging applications afforded by the POPs are summarized, and special attention is paid to the relationship between the morphology and performance of POP materials. Finally, current challenges in the development of application-driven morphological control are addressed, revealing areas for future investigation. We hope that this review will encourage future investigation of POPs with defined morphologies as well as exploration on hitherto unknown characteries of the morphology derived innovative applications.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs) are porous materials composed of light elements such as C, H, N, and O. The benign characters, including large surface area, good physical and chemical stability, well-defined chemical composition, wide ranges of monomer selection, and strong designability, have made POPs one of the frontiers in materials research. In this review, we discussed the design and synthesis of various POP materials that mainly led by Chinese scientists, including conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs), and hypercrosslinked porous polymers (HCPs), as well as crystalline POPs comprised of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and a special class of COFs with triazine rings, covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs), and supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs), and sorted out their main applications in adsorption, separation, catalysis, and electrochemistry fields.

Abstract:Developing hierarchical ordered systems is challenging. Using organo-macrocycles to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous coordination cages (PCCs) provides an efficient way to obtain hierarchical assemblies. Macrocycles, such as crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cucurbiturils, and pillararenes, can be incorporated within MOFs/PCCs and they also endow the resultant composites with enhanced properties and functionalities. This review summarizes recent developments of organo-macrocycle-containing hierarchical MOFs/PCCs, emphasizing applications and structure-property relationships of these hierarchically porous materials. This review provides insights for future research on hierarchical self-assembly using macrocycles as building blocks and functional ligands to extend the applications of the composites.

Abstract:The emergence of porous organic polymers (POPs) has provided great opportunities for new applications in heterogeneous catalysis owing to their unprecedented intrinsic structural features such as high surface areas, extraordinary framework stabilities and chemically adjustable compositions. In this tutorial review, representative recent developments in the POPs-based catalysts with hierarchically porous structures are presented. Various strategies for the syntheses of hierarchically porous polymers including hard-templating, soft-templating and template-free approaches and the design of catalytically active porous polymers including post-modification, co-polymerization and self-polymerization have been discussed. In addition, their catalytic properties are compared. Finally, we emphasize the importance of the synthesis of hierarchically porous polymer based heterogeneous catalysts using sustainable routes under template-free and metal-free conditions.

Abstract:In this review, the authors provide a comprehensive overview of porous organic polymers (POPs)‐based nanofibers and their derivatives. The coverage includes synthesis, preparation methodologies, and emerging applications, offering the first exhaustive examination of various nanofibrous POPs, their composite materials, and derived carbon materials. Additionally, the authors delve into the diverse applications, challenges, and future perspectives of these nanofibers. Engineering porous organic polymers (POPs) into 1D morphology holds significant promise for diverse applications due to their exceptional processability and increased surface contact for enhanced interactions with guest molecules. This article reviews the latest developments in nanofibrous POPs and their derivatives, encompassing porous organic polymer nanofibers, their composites, and POPs‐derived carbon nanofibers. The review delves into the design and fabrication strategies, elucidates the formation mechanisms, explores their functional attributes, and highlights promising applications. The first section systematically outlines two primary fabrication approaches of nanofibrous POPs, i.e., direct bulk synthesis and electrospinning technology. Both routes are discussed and compared in terms of template utilization and post‐treatments. Next, performance of nanofibrous POPs and their derivatives are reviewed for applications including water treatment, water/oil separation, gas adsorption, energy storage, heterogeneous catalysis, microwave absorption, and biomedical systems. Finally, highlighting existent challenges and offering future prospects of nanofibrous POPs and their derivatives are concluded.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are porous crystalline materials. The pores in HOFs are usually non-covalent extrinsic pores constructed through the formation of the framework. Supramolecular macrocycles with intrinsic pores in their structures are good candidates for constructing HOFs with intrinsic pores from the macrocycles themselves, thus leading to hierarchically porous structures. Combining the macrocycle and HOFs will endow these hierarchically porous materials with enhanced properties and special functionalities. This review summarizes recent advances in macrocycle-based HOFs, including the macrocycles used for constructing HOFs, the hierarchically porous structures of the HOFs, and the applications induced by the hierarchically HOFs porous structures. This review provides insights for future research on macrocycle-based hierarchically porous HOFs and the appropriate applications of the unique structures. Abstract:Amorphous porous organic polymers ( a POPs) are a type of highly crosslinked polymers. These polymers are generally constructed from rigid organic building blocks, which have become an important subclass of POPs with diverse applications. In the early stage of development, a wide range of carbon-based building blocks and network forming chemistry afforded a large library of a POPs with rich structures and properties. Recently, implanting main group elements with diverse geometric structures and electronic configurations into a POPs has proven to be a useful tool to fine-tune the structures and properties of these polymers. Herein, we outline the recent advances in the field of main group (MG)- a POPs where main-group elements either played unique roles in tuning the structures and properties of MG- a POPs, or offered new strategies in the synthesis of MG- a POPs. Furthermore, this Review discusses various challenges remaining in the field from the perspectives of synthetic strategies and characterization techniques, and presents some specific studies that may potentially address the challenges.

Abstract:Polymers have become one of the major types of materials that are essential in our daily life. The controlled synthesis of value-added polymers with unique mechanical and chemical properties have attracted broad research interest. Metal–organic framework (MOF) is a class of porous material with immense structural diversity which offers unique advantages for catalyzing polymerization and oligomerization reactions including the uniformity of the catalytic active site, and the templating effect of the nano-sized channels. We summarized in this review the important recent progress in the field of MOF-catalyzed and MOF-templated polymerizations, to reveal the chemical principle and structural aspects of these systems and hope to inspire the future design of novel polymerization systems with improved activity and specificity.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction of multiple pore size regimes into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) to form hierarchical porous structures can lead to improved performance of the material in various applications. In many cases, where interactions with bulky molecules are involved, enlarging the pore size of typically microporous MOF adsorbents or MOF catalysts is crucial for enhancing both mass transfer and molecular accessibility. In this review, we examine the range of synthetic strategies which have been reported thus far to prepare hierarchical MOFs or MOF composites with added macroporosity. These fabrication techniques can be either pre- or post-synthetic and include using hard or soft structural template agents, defect formation, routes involving supercritical CO 2 , and 3D printing. We also discuss potential applications and some of the challenges involved with current techniques, which must be addressed if any of these approaches are to be taken forward for industrial applications.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous three-dimensional (3D)-ordered macro-microporous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which possess both well-defined crystalline frameworks and pore structure, have attracted tremendous interest in the field of energy storage and conversion because of their unique properties including tunable porosity and composition, high specific surface area, and the ordered distribution of hierarchically porous structure. In this review, the up-to-date synthetic strategies of hierarchically porous 3D-ordered macro-microporous MOFs, their unique hierarchically porous structure, and potential applications in energy storage and conversion are systematically summarized. After summarizing the synthesis methods of various hierarchically porous 3D-ordered macro-microporous MOFs, an in-depth discussion of the general principles and regulation mechanisms is provided by summarizing the representative examples. In addition, the review also summarizes the standard applications of hierarchically porous 3D-ordered macro-microporous MOFs derivatives in addressing energy problems and environmental protection. Lastly, a comprehensive summary of the future challenges and potential prospects for developing hierarchically porous 3D-ordered macro-microporous materials is presented. This review aims to guide the rational design and manipulation of novel hierarchically porous 3D-ordered macro-microporous materials for target-specific applications by capitalizing on the characteristic benefits of 3D-ordered MOFs.

Abstract:The establishment of green and environmental friendly sunlight-driven organic reactions has received increasing attention since the 21st century. By virtue of their functional designability, micromesoporous structure, and thermal/chemical stability, porous organic polymers (POPs) have exhibited enormous promise in photocatalytic organic reactions as ideal potential alternatives to conventional small molecule and inorganic semiconductor catalysts. In particular, amorphous POPs are simplified in terms of preparation conditions and process flow. Herein, various amorphous POP materials based on polymers of intrinsic microporosity, hypercrosslinked polymers, conjugated microporous polymers, and porous aromatic frameworks are reviewed, while typical synthetic strategies are briefly introduced. It also highlights an overview of the research progress in photocatalytic oxidation, coupling, reduction, cycloaddition, and polymerization reactions at home and abroad in recent years. Finally, the challenges and prospects for future research on amorphous POPs are presented.

Abstract:Covalent linkages facilitate the connection of organic building blocks, thereby constructing porous organic polymers (POPs). The remarkable attributes of porous organic polymers, such as adjustable porosities, low densities, high surface specificity areas, variable compositions, convenient post-functionalization, high carbon contents, and robust chemical and thermal stabilities, make them a subject of significant interest. These polymers incorporate oxygen, nitrogen, and other non-metallic atoms, as well as extended conjugation, further enhancing their appeal. POPs can be categorized into four distinct groups: covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs), hyper-crosslinked polymers (HCPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs). The synthesis of POPs involves processes such as polymerization and polycondensation. In recent years, POPs have emerged as promising electrocatalysts, exhibiting favorable activity and significant progress in various electrocatalytic reactions. These reactions encompass a wide range, including the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), nitrate reduction reaction, hydrogen oxidation reaction, nitrobenzene reduction reaction, and benzyl alcohol reaction. The exceptional performance of POPs as electrocatalysts can be attributed to their well-preserved compositional and structural properties. This tutorial review aims to highlight the catalytic applications of POPs across multiple fields, namely environmental, energy (including water splitting and hydrogen production, fuel cells, metal-air batteries, electrochemical cells, and supercapacitors), and biomedical areas (such as drug delivery, biosensing, bioimaging, and bio-separation). Moreover, the review delves into the current challenges, and will also provide future prospects.

Abstract:As compared to porous network solids, including metal–organic frameworks, covalent–organic frameworks, porous aromatic frameworks, and zeolites, porous molecular materials are relatively unexplored. Additionally, within porous molecular space, porous organic cages (POCs) have been the most widely reported over the past decade. Relatively recently, however, porous hybrid metal–organic molecular complexes have received considerable attention with a large fraction of surface areas for these coordination cages reported over the past three years. This review focuses on advances in this area. We highlight the recent work with permanently microporous metal–organic polyhedra (MOPs). Analogous to early work in the area of MOFs, the vast majority of MOPs for which surface areas have been reported have been based on paddlewheel building units and carboxylate ligands. We describe the synthesis of porous cages and highlight those based on monometallic, bimetallic, trimetallic, tetrametallic, and higher nuclearity clusters. Finally, we showcase work wherein the porosity of MOPs has been leveraged for applications related to the storage and separation of small molecules and the incorporation of these porous and potentially porous cages into membranes.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Supramolecular cavitands and organic cages having a well-defined cavity and excellent host–guest complexing ability have been explored for a myriad of applications ranging from catalysis to molecular separation to drug delivery. On the other hand, porous organic polymers (POPs) having tunable porosity and a robust network structure have emerged as advanced materials for molecular storage, heterogeneous catalysis, water purification, light harvesting, and energy storage. A fruitful marriage between guest-responsive discrete porous supramolecular hosts and highly porous organic polymers has created a new interface in supramolecular chemistry and materials science, confronting the challenges related to energy and the environment. In this mini-review, we have addressed the recent advances (from 2015 to the middle of 2020) of cavitand and organic cage-based porous organic polymers for sustainable development, including applications in heterogeneous catalysis, CO<sub>2</sub> conversion, micropollutant separation, and heavy metal sequestration from water. We have highlighted the "cavitand/cage-to-framework" design strategy and delineated the future scope of the emerging new class of porous organic networks from "preporous" building blocks.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely recognized as one of the most fascinating classes of materials from science and engineering perspectives, benefiting from their high porosity and well-defined and tailored structures and components at the atomic level. Although their intrinsic micropores endow size-selective capability and high surface area, etc., the narrow pores limit their applications toward diffusion-control and large-size species involved processes. In recent years, the construction of hierarchically porous MOFs (HP-MOFs), MOF-based hierarchically porous composites, and MOF-based hierarchically porous derivatives has captured widespread interest to extend the applications of conventional MOF-based materials. In this Review, the recent advances in the design, synthesis, and functional applications of MOF-based hierarchically porous materials are summarized. Their structural characters toward various applications, including catalysis, gas storage and separation, air filtration, sewage treatment, sensing and energy storage, have been demonstrated with typical reports. The comparison of HP-MOFs with traditional porous materials (e.g., zeolite, porous silica, carbons, metal oxides, and polymers), subsisting challenges, as well as future directions in this research field, are also indicated.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs), which feature high surface areas, robust skeletons, tunable pores, adjustable functionality and versatile applicability, have constituted a designable platform to develop advanced organic materials. Endowing polyelectrolytes with the distinct characteristics of POPs will attract mounting interest as the structural diversity of polyelectrolytes will bring the new hope of intriguing applications and potential benefits. In this review, the striking progress in ionized POPs (i-POPs) has been systematically summarized with regard to their synthetic strategies and applications. In the synthesis of i-POPs, we illustrate the representative ionic building blocks and charged functional groups capable of constructing the polyelectrolyte frameworks. The synthetic methods, including direct synthesis and post-modification, are detailed for the i-POPs with amorphous or crystalline structures, respectively. Subsequently, we outline the distinctive performances of i-POPs in adsorption, separation, catalysis, sensing, ion conduction and biomedical applications. The survey concerns the interplay between the surface chemistry, ionic interaction and pore confinement that cooperatively promote the performance of i-POPs. Finally, we conclude with the remaining challenges and promising opportunities for the on-going development of i-POPs.
