Abstract:In a recent paper almost sure unisolvence of RBF interpolation at random points with no polynomial addition was proved, for Thin-Plate Splines and Radial Powers with noninteger exponent. The proving technique left unsolved the case of odd exponents. In this short note we prove almost sure polynomial-free unisolvence in such instances, by a deeper analysis of the interpolation matrix determinant and fundamental properties of analytic functions.

Abstract:Pseudo-splines of type I were introduced in [I. Daubechies, B. Han, A. Ron, Z. Shen, Framelets: MRA-based constructions of wavelet frames, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 14 (2003) 1–46] and [Selenick, Smooth wavelet tight frames with zero moments, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 10 (2000) 163–181] and type II were introduced in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104]. Both types of pseudo-splines provide a rich family of refinable functions with B-splines, interpolatory refinable functions and refinable functions with orthonormal shifts as special examples. In [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], Dong and Shen gave a regularity analysis of pseudo-splines of both types. The key to regularity analysis is Proposition 3.2 in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], which also appeared in [A. Cohen, J.P. Conze, Régularité des bases d'ondelettes et mesures ergodiques, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 8 (1992) 351–365] and [I. Daubechies, Ten Lectures on Wavelets, CBMS-NSF Series in Applied Mathematics, SIAM, Philadelphia, 1992] for the case l=N−1. In this note, we will give a new insight into this proposition.

Abstract:This note concerns the finite interpolation problem with two parametrized families of splines related to polynomial spline interpolation. We address the questions of uniqueness and establish basic convergence rates for splines of the form $ s_\alpha = p\cosh(\alpha\cdot)+q\sinh(\alpha \cdot)$ and $t_\alpha = p+q\tanh(\alpha \cdot) $ between the nodes where $p,q\in\Pi_{k-1}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a new family of refinable functions named pseudo box splines which generalize univariate pseudo-splines to the multivariate setting. The properties of pseudo box splines including stability and regularity are analyzed. Furthermore, we obtain a series of compactly supported C∞ refinable functions by applying nonstationary cascade algorithms to the masks of pseudo box splines. Using these functions, we construct compactly supported nonstationary C∞ tight wavelet frames in L2(Rs) with the spectral frame approximation order.

Abstract:Existence of sufficient conditions for unisolvence of Kansa unsymmetric collocation for PDEs is still an open problem. In this paper we make a first step in this direction, proving that unsymmetric collocation matrices with Thin-Plate Splines for the 2D Poisson equation are almost surely nonsingular, when the discretization points are chosen randomly on domains with analytic boundary.

Abstract:We make a further step in the unisolvence open problem for unsymmetric Kansa collocation, proving nonsingularity of Kansa matrices with polyharmonic splines and random fictitious centers, for second-order elliptic equations with mixed boundary conditions. We also show some numerical tests, where the fictitious centers are local random perturbations of predetermined collocation points.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a comprehensive proof concerning the regularity of critical points for the spline energy functional on Riemannian manifolds, even for the general higher-order case. Although this result is widely acknowledged in the literature, a detailed proof was previously absent. Our proof relies on a generalization of the DuBois-Reymond Lemma. Furthermore, we establish the existence of minimizers for the spline energy functional in cases where multiple interpolation points are prescribed alongside just one velocity.

Abstract:We present new techniques for reducing a multivariate sparse polynomial to a univariate polynomial. The reduction works similarly to the classical and widely-used Kronecker substitution, except that we choose the degrees randomly based on the number of nonzero terms in the multivariate polynomial, that is, its sparsity. The resulting univariate polynomial often has a significantly lower degree than the Kronecker substitution polynomial, at the expense of a small number of term collisions. As an application, we give a new algorithm for multivariate interpolation which uses these new techniques along with any existing univariate interpolation algorithm.

Abstract:In many practical applications, we face the problem of reconstruction of an un- known function sampled at some data points. Among infinitely many possible reconstructions, the thin plate spline interpolation is known to be the least oscillatory one in the Beppo-Levi semi norm, when the data points are sampled in R 2 . The traditional proofs supporting the argu- ment are quite lengthy and complicated, keeping students and researchers off its understanding. In this article, we introduce a simple and short proof for the optimal reconstruction. Our proof is unique and reguires only elementary mathematical background.

Abstract:We introduce a new variational method for the numerical homogenization of divergence form elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic equations with arbitrary rough (L∞) coefficients. Our method does not rely on concepts of ergodicity or scale-separation but on compactness properties of the solution space and a new variational approach to homogenization. The approximation space is generated by an interpolation basis (over scattered points forming a mesh of resolution H) minimizing the L2 norm of the source terms; its (pre-)computation involves minimizing 𝒪(H−d) quadratic (cell) problems on (super-)localized sub-domains of size 𝒪(H ln(1/H)). The resulting localized linear systems remain sparse and banded. The resulting interpolation basis functions are biharmonic for d ≤ 3, and polyharmonic for d ≥ 4, for the operator −div(a∇·) and can be seen as a generalization of polyharmonic splines to differential operators with arbitrary rough coefficients. The accuracy of the method (𝒪(H) in energy norm and independent from aspect ratios of the mesh formed by the scattered points) is established via the introduction of a new class of higher-order Poincaré inequalities. The method bypasses (pre-)computations on the full domain and naturally generalizes to time dependent problems, it also provides a natural solution to the inverse problem of recovering the solution of a divergence form elliptic equation from a finite number of point measurements.

Abstract:In this paper, we give new numerical methods to solve $C^{2}$ splines for interpolating a finite set of probability measures. Due to the difficulties of generalizing interpolations and solving them with explicit expressions on manifolds, we first introduce a theoretical analysis with different structures on the Riemannian manifold of probability measures $\mathcal{P} _{+}(I)$. Then, by combining standard numerical methods and a new mathematical modeling we generalize interpolating splines as a minimizer of an energy functional on $\mathcal{P} _{+}(I)$. Finally, we show the efficiency of the proposed methods and their computational relevance with several applications.

Abstract:Due to properties such as interpolation, smoothness, and spline connections, Hermite subdivision schemes employ fast iterative algorithms for geometrically modeling curves/surfaces in CAGD and for building Hermite wavelets in numerical PDEs. In this paper, we introduce a notion of generalized Hermite (dyadic) subdivision schemes and then we characterize their convergence, smoothness and underlying matrix masks with or without interpolation properties. We also introduce the notion of linear-phase moments for achieving the polynomial-interpolation property. For any given integer , we constructively prove that there always exist convergent smooth generalized Hermite subdivision schemes with linear-phase moments such that their basis vector functions are spline functions in and have linearly independent integer shifts. As by-products, our results resolve convergence, smoothness, and existence of Lagrange, Hermite, or Birkhoff subdivision schemes. Even in dimension one our results significantly generalize and extend many known results on extensively studied univariate Hermite subdivision schemes. To illustrate the theoretical results in this paper, we provide examples of convergent generalized Hermite subdivision schemes with symmetric matrix masks having short support and smooth basis vector functions with or without interpolation property.

Polyharmonic and Related Kernels on Manifolds: Interpolation and Approximation

Abstract:This article is devoted to developing a theory for effective kernel interpolation and approximation in a general setting. For a wide class of compact, connected $C^\infty$ Riemannian manifolds, including the important cases of spheres and SO(3), we establish, using techniques involving differential geometry and Lie groups, that the kernels obtained as fundamental solutions of certain partial differential operators generate Lagrange functions that are uniformly bounded and decay away from their center at an algebraic rate, and in certain cases, an exponential rate. An immediate corollary is that the corresponding Lebesgue constants for interpolation as well as for $L_2$ minimization are uniformly bounded with a constant whose only dependence on the set of data sites is reflected in the mesh ratio, which measures the uniformity of the data. The kernels considered here include the restricted surface splines on spheres, as well as surface splines for SO(3), both of which have elementary closed-form representations that are computationally implementable. In addition to obtaining bounded Lebesgue constants in this setting, we also establish a "zeros lemma" for domains on compact Riemannian manifolds -- one that holds in as much generality as the corresponding Euclidean zeros lemma (on Lipschitz domains satisfying interior cone conditions) with constants that clearly demonstrate the influence of the geometry of the boundary (via cone parameters) as well as that of the Riemannian metric.

Abstract:The usual power function error estimates do not capture the true order of uniform accuracy for thin plate spline interpolation to smooth data functions in one variable. In this paper we propose a new type of power function and we show, through numerical experiments, that the error estimate based upon it does match the expected order. We also study the relationship between the new power function and the Peano kernel for univariate thin plate spline interpolation.
