Abstract:. The mesoporous graphene oxide-supported ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4/GO) nanocomposites (the average size of 30.08 nm) were controllably synthesized in the present study. The successful in situ growth of Fe3O4 nanoparticles on GO surface was ascribed to the oxygen-containing groups on GO. The magnetic separation was employed for Sb(III) removal from aqueous solutions and artificial intelligence techniques were adopted to reduce the number and cost of experiments, in order to render these nanocomposites of a practical value. The three methods, including response surface methodology (RSM), artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) and artificial neural network-particle swarm optimization (ANN-PSO), were used to model and optimize the removal of Sb(III) from aqueous solutions. These three models were evaluated based on correlation coefficient (R2) and mean squared error (MSE). The higher R2 value and lower MSE of ANN-GA demonstrated the superiority of ANN-GA model over ANN-PSO and RSM models. Analysis of variance, gradient boosted regression trees (GBRT) and Garson method exhibited that contact time was the most influential variable for the Sb(III) removal. Fitting of isotherm data showed that the removal process was controlled by the monolayer adsorption on a homogeneous surface based on the values of R2, x2, sum of absolute errors (SAE) and average percentage errors (APE). The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model, which was spontaneous and entropy-driven. It was observed that the adsorption process was accompanied with the redox reaction based on the XPS analysis. The regeneration experiments showed that the mesoporous Fe3O4/GO nanocomposites are an effective and reusable adsorbent within four regeneration cycles.

Abstract:A magnetic Fe3O4/GO composite with potential for rapid solid-liquid separation through a magnetic field was synthesized using GO (graphene oxide) and Fe3O4 (ferriferous oxide). Characterization of Fe3O4/GO used scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). A number of factors such as pH and coexisting ions on adsorbent dose were tested in a series of batch experiments. The results showed that GO and Fe3O4 are strongly integrated. For pH values in the range of 3.0~9.0, the removal efficiency of Sb(III) using the synthesized Fe3O4/GO remained high (95%). The adsorption showed good fit to a pseudo-second-order and Langmiur model, with the maximum adsorption capacity of 9.59 mg/g maintained across pH 3.0–9.0. Thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the adsorption process is accompanied by a redox reaction.
Adsorption-Based Removal of Sb (III) from Wastewater by Graphene Oxide-Modified Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework Composites

Abstract:The treatment of Sb (III) wastewater produced from mining activities is uniquely challenging and has therefore garnered increasing attention. Here, an amino-modified zirconium-based metal-organic framework material (UiO-66-NH2) and its composites were loaded onto graphene oxide (GO@UiO-66-NH2) via the hydrothermal method, after which these materials were used to adsorb Sb (III) in mine wastewater. The effects of adsorption time, pH, initial Sb (III) concentration, temperature, and adsorbent dosage on the removal performance of Sb (III) were then investigated. The adsorption processes of Sb (III) were examined via adsorption kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic analyses. XRD, SEM, and FTIR analyses demonstrated the presence of a porous structure and high levels of oxygen-containing functional groups on the UiO-66-NH2 and GO@UiO-66-NH2 surfaces. During the Sb (III) adsorption process, the adsorption rates of UiO-66-NH2 and GO@UiO-66-NH2 were very fast in the first 10 minutes, and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved in 12 h, with the adsorption efficiencies of 91.76% and 93.79%, respectively. At a pH of 7.0, 25°C, an initial Sb (III) concentration of 100 mg/L, and an adsorbent dosage of 0.04 g/L, the maximum Sb (III) adsorption capacities of UiO-66-NH2 and GO@UiO-66-NH2 reached 39.23 mg/g and 61.07 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process was accurately described by the Langmuir model, meaning that the Sb (III) was adsorbed through single-layer uniform adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption process was highly consistent with the pseudo-second-order model, which was indicative of spontaneous and endothermic chemical adsorption. Additionally, the Sb (III) removal efficiency could be maintained approximately 70% after sorption-desorption recycling four times. Therefore, our study provides an economical and effective method for the removal of Sb (III) in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A novel kind of iron oxide supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was prepared for adsorption of antimony (Sb)(III) in aqueous solution. The iron (III) oxide (Fe2O3)-modified CNTs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. Parameters affecting the adsorption efficiencies, including solution pH value, initial Sb(III) concentration, adsorbent dosage, adsorption time and temperature, were investigated. The results indicate that the removal rate of Sb(III) by Fe2O3-modified CNTs is 99.97% under the initial Sb(III) concentration of 1.5 mg/L, adsorbents dosage of 0.5 g/L, temperature of 25 degrees C and pH value of 7.00, which is 29.81% higher than that of the raw CNTs. The adsorption capacity increased correspondingly from 3.01 to 6.23 mg/g. The equilibrium adsorption data can be fitted to the Freundlich adsorption isotherm. In addition, it has been found that the solution pH values and adsorption temperatures have no significant influence on Sb(III) removal.
Advancing Antimony(III) Adsorption: Impact of Varied Manganese Oxide Modifications on Iron–Graphene Oxide–Chitosan Composites

Abstract:Antimony (Sb) is one of the most concerning toxic metals globally, making the study of methods for efficiently removing Sb(III) from water increasingly urgent. This study uses graphene oxide and chitosan as the matrix (GOCS), modifying them with FeCl2 and four MnOx to form iron–manganese oxide (FM/GC) at a Fe/Mn molar ratio of 4:1. FM/GC quaternary composite microspheres are prepared, showing that FM/GC obtained from different MnOx exhibits significant differences in the ability to remove Sb(III) from neutral solutions. The order of Sb(III) removal effectiveness is MnSO4 > KMnO4 > MnCl2 > MnO2. The composite microspheres obtained by modifying GOCS with FeCl2 and MnSO4 are selected for further batch experiments and characterization tests to analyze the factors and mechanisms influencing Sb(III) removal. The results show that the adsorption capacity of Sb(III) decreases with increasing pH and solid–liquid ratio, and gradually increases with the initial concentration and reaction time. The Langmuir model fitting indicates that the maximum adsorption capacity of Sb(III) is 178.89 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism involves the oxidation of the Mn-O group, which converts Sb(III) in water into Sb(V). This is followed by ligand exchange and complex formation with O-H in FeO(OH) groups, and further interactions with C-OH, C-O, O-H, and other functional groups in GOCS.

Abstract:Highly porous, three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured composite adsorbents of reduced graphene oxides/Mn3O4 (RGO/Mn3O4) were fabricated by a facile method of a combination of reflux condensation and solvothermal reactions and systemically characterized. The as-prepared RGO/Mn3O4 possesses a mesoporous 3D structure, in which Mn3O4 nanoparticles are uniformly deposited on the surface of the reduced graphene oxide. The adsorption properties of RGO/Mn3O4 to antimonite (Sb(III)) and antimonate (Sb(V)) were investigated using batch experiments of adsorption isotherms and kinetics. Experimental results show that the RGO/Mn3O4 composite has fast liquid transport and superior adsorption capacity toward antimony (Sb) species in comparison to six recent adsorbents reported in the literature and summarized in a table in this paper. Theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of RGO/Mn3O4 toward Sb(III) and Sb(V) are 151.84 and 105.50 mg/g, respectively, modeled by Langmuir isotherms. The application of RGO/Mn3O4 was demonstrated by using drinking water spiked with Sb (320 μg/L). Fixed-bed column adsorption experiments indicate that the effective breakthrough volumes were 859 and 633 mL bed volumes (BVs) for the Sb(III) and Sb(V), respectively, until the maximum contaminant level of 5 ppb was reached, which is below the maximum limits allowed in drinking water according to the most stringent regulations. The advantages of being nontoxic, highly stable, and resistant to acid and alkali and having high adsorption capacity toward Sb(III) and Sb(V) confirm the great potential application of RGO/Mn3O4 in Sb-spiked water treatment.
Facile synthesis of nanosheet-assembled γ-Fe2O3 magnetic microspheres and enhanced Sb(III) removal

Abstract:The development and utilization of magnetic nanoadsorption materials with large adsorption capacity and easy separation are the research hotspot nowadays. In this study, nanosheet-assembled maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) magnetic microspheres were successfully synthesized by an environmental friendly, quick, and simple method, for enhanced Sb(III) removal from aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) were used to characterize the material. The results showed that the product contained flower-like γ-Fe2O3 microspheres composed of petal-shaped nanosheets interspersed with each other. The specific surface area and pore volume were 69.23 m2/g and 0.15 cm3/g, respectively. The material has a strong magnetic response, which allows rapid solid-liquid separation under the action of an external magnetic field. The effects of different dosages, solution pH, and contact time on the adsorption effect were studied by batch adsorption experiments, and the reusability of the materials was evaluated. Both Freundlich isothermal adsorption model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model were able to describe the uptake of Sb(III). The maximum adsorption capacity of the material was 47.48 mg/g under optimal conditions. The adsorption mechanism is mainly that Sb and lattice oxygen (OX2-) form Fe-O-Sb coordination bonds, which is incorporated into the crystal structure of γ-Fe2O3 as inner-sphere surface complexes. The synthetic material has the advantage of simple preparation process, good adsorption capacity, operation over a wide range of pH, and easy physical separation from treatment systems with good potential for future application to treat polluted wastewater.
Investigating the electron-scale adsorption mechanisms using DFT calculations and experimental studies in self-assembly magnetic biochar gel incorporated with graphene nanosheets for enhanced Sb(III) removal

Abstract:Environmental contamination posed by trivalent antimony [Sb(III)] in water has been globally recognized as a complex challenge, garnering considerable public concern. To enhance the adsorption efficiency of pristine biochar (BC) for Sb(III), a novel Fe/graphene-loaded biochar (FeGB) gel was synthesized through a facile in-situ self-assembly method. This study aimed to investigate the adsorption performance and elucidate the electron-scale adsorption mechanism for Sb(III) by the FeGB-gel. The Sb(III) adsorption isotherm data fitted well with the Langmuir model, and the maximum Sb(III) adsorption capacity of FeGB-gel (113.1 mg g−1) was significantly higher compared to that of BC (28.6 mg g−1). Spectroscopic investigations revealed that surface complexation and π–π stacking were the key mechanisms for Sb(III) adsorption. Electrochemical analyses confirmed an enhanced electron-accepting capacity (0.815 mmol e- g−1) of FeGB-gel, linked to the formation of Fe-related functional groups (Fe–O and Fe–O–OH), which contributed to a stronger Sb(III) oxidation capacity than BC (78.5% v.s. 49.3%). Density functional theory calculations highlighted that the presence of defects on graphene nanosheets enhanced the anchoring of FeOx on biochar, thereby elevating the Sb(III) adsorption energy of FeGB-gel to −1.96 eV. Additionally, the projected density of states profile suggested that the enhanced adsorption of FeGB-gel could be attributable to the orbital hybridization of Sb-p, O-p, and Fe-p/d orbitals (i.e., Fe–O–Sb bonding), which strengthened the electron transfer and chemical interaction during the Sb(III) removal process. The functionalization of biochar surface characteristics with Fe/graphene offers possibilities for a diverse range of biochar-based adsorbents and their application in addressing numerous environmental concerns.

Abstract:In this study graphene oxide (GO) synthesized by modified Hummer's method. Surface of GO was modified with biopolymer chitosan (CS) and then grafted with the ZnO nanoparticles. GO/ZnO/CS was investigated as adsorbent for the elimination of Pb (II) and Cr (VI) ions from aqueous solutions. The Box-Behnken Design (BBD) within the framework of response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize different parameters, which including pH of the metal solution, initial metal ions concentration and contact time. The quadratic model was best fitted for characterizing the influence of adsorption parameters on adsorption capacity (q e ) and percent removal (% R), exhibiting strong statistical support with R 2 values and p-values. To explore the interactions between these parameters and determine the ideal conditions for removing Pb (II) and Cr (VI) ions, we employed second-order polynomial equations, performed analysis of variance (ANOVA), and generated three-dimensional surface plots. The optimum parameters for Pb (II) ions were pH 5, initial concentration 60 mg/L and 120 min contact time, with 110.88 mg/g adsorption capacity and 92.4 % removal efficiency. For Cr (VI) ions 84.5 mg/g adsorption capacity and 70.5 % removal was achieved at pH 2, 60 mg/L metal concentration at 112 min contact time.

Abstract:Schwertmannite was incorporated onto graphene oxide to form nanocomposites (GO–SCH) to serve as an adsorbent for Sb(V) removal. A synergistic effect on Sb(V) uptake was observed for the composite adsorbent. A maximum Sb(V) adsorption capacity of 158.6mg Sb(V)/g of GO–SCH at an equilibrium Sb(V) concentration of 8.0mg/L at pH 7.0 was obtained. This capacity is superior to either GO or SCH alone. The effect of contact time, solution pH and co-existing competitive anions on Sb(V) uptake by GO–SCH was evaluated. External mass transfer governed the Sb(V) uptake kinetics within 1h. After 1h, intraparticle diffusion gradually became predominant. Common co-existing anions at their natural environmental concentrations had little effect on the performance of GO–SCH. Sb(V) in spiked tap water (100μg/L), simulated river water (6400μg/L), and acid mine drainage (50,000μg/L) was adsorbed by GO–SCH to well below the regulation levels for these waters. XRD and SEM analyses showed that SCH was well incorporated among GO platelets and highly dispersed on the GO carrier’s surface. FTIR and Raman spectra showed that both SCH and GO surfaces in the composites contribute to Sb(V) removal and SCH was the main active phase. This was also confirmed by XPS Fe 2p spectra. Sb 3d3/2 XPS spectra indicated that no surface precipitation or reduction of Sb(V) to Sb(III) occurred. Deconvolution of C 1s XPS spectra and Boehm titration indicated the surface carboxyl, lactonic and phenolic hydroxyl groups of GO also contribute to Sb(V) removal. The outstanding Sb(V) uptake ability of GO–SCH suggests it is a promising adsorbent for antimony removal from contaminated water.
Optimal Synthesis and Mechanistic Performance of HCO-Doped-(Fe3O4)x Adsorbent for Sb(III)/Sb(V) Removal From Water

Abstract:Concern over potential antimony mediated toxicity from mining and smelting activities has instigated novel concepts toward removing aqueous antimony ions. The iron based adsorbent Fe3O4/HCO was found to be efficient for treating antimony-containing wastewater However, ineffective methodology for preparation limited its effective adsorption capacity and thus wider application. In this study, a new type of HCO-doped-(Fe3O4)x adsorbent was prepared by co-precipitation method for doping Fe3O4 into HCO sludge (HCO), thereby improving adsorption performance for Sb(III) and Sb(V) ions, with the maximum adsorbing capacity being 44.46 mg/g and 47.91 mg/g, respectively. According to the results of BET, SEM-EDS, XRD and XPS, it were confirmed that the FeOOH and X≡Fe-OH were formed during the preparation process, bring about the increased the surface area, thus resulting in further increase of surface area, hydroxyl groups and the net negative ionic charge. Moreover, the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model which indicated that adsorption process of Sb(III)/Sb(V) by HCO-doped-(Fe3O4)x adsorbent was controlled by chemical reaction. The main adsorption mechanism is that antimony ion and amorphous iron oxide X≡Fe-OH undergo coordination exchange reaction and complexation reaction with CeO2 or Ce2O3. Furthermore, HCO-doped-(Fe3O4)x could adapt to wide pH and had stable adsorption ability after regeneration. The good adsorption performance of HCO-doped-(Fe3O4)x makes it a potential applications of adsorbent for removal of antimony.
MOF/graphene Oxide Composite As an Efficient Adsorbent for the Removal of Organic Dyes from Aqueous Solution.

Abstract:The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-100(Fe) and graphene oxide (GO) composites were prepared by hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption/desorption, thermal-gravimetric (TG) analysis, the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The composites were used for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution. The results indicated that MIL-100(Fe) and GO formed a sandwich-like structure, and the crystal structure of MIL-100(Fe) was reserved in the composites. The attachment of GO layers to the MIL-100(Fe) decreased the surface area from 1690 to 1602 m2/g, and pore volume from 0.996 to 0.770 cm3/g when 5% (w/w) GO was added, due to the coating of MIL-100(Fe) by GO sheets. The addition of 5% (w/w) GO increased the adsorption capacity for MB (from 1019 to 1231 mg/g) and MO (from 667 to 1189 mg/g). The composites showed a better thermal stability than MIL-100(Fe); the decomposition temperature increased from 280 to 350 °C. The addition of GO improved the properties of MIL-100(Fe) as an adsorbent for MO/MB from aqueous solution.
One-pot Synthesis of Magnetic Graphene Oxide Composites As an Efficient and Recoverable Adsorbent for Cd(II) and Pb(II) Removal from Aqueous Solution

Abstract:It is extremely desirable but challenging to develop a facile synthesis method to directly prepare reusable and longtime stable magnetic graphene oxide (GO) adsorbent. Here, a new approach to prepare a magnetic GO for removing the heavy metal ions is reported by using n-Propyltrimethoxysilane (NPTS) as a cross-coupling agent to connect Fe3O4/SiO2 and GO. The as-prepared magnetic GO can be separated quickly from their aqueous solution by the permanent magnet and also exhibited excellent adsorption performance for Cd(II) and Pb(II) with maximum adsorption capacities for Cd(II) and Pb(II) to 128.2 and 385.1 mg/g under neutral conditions, respectively. The presence of other ions such as Na(I) and K(I), had little influence on the Cd(II) and Pb(II) removal efficiency. Moreover, the as-prepared Fe3O4/SiO2-GO adsorbents can be recycled and exhibited good reproducibility. Thus, the magnetic GO adsorbents are effective materials for the removal of heavy metal ions and thus could offer a new platform for water cleanup.

Abstract:The composite material graphene oxide (GO)/MIL-101(Fe) was prepared by a simple one-pot reaction method. MIL-101(Fe) grown on the surface of a GO layer was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The adsorption performance and the mechanism of MIL-101(Fe) and GO/MIL-101(Fe) for methyl orange (MO) were studied. The results have shown that the adsorption capacity of GO/MIL-101(Fe) for MO was significantly better than that of MIL-101(Fe), and its capacity was the highest when 10% GO was added. The Langmuir specific surface areas of MIL-101(Fe) and GO/MIL-101(Fe) were 1003.47 and 888.289 m2·g–1, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of MO on MIL-101 (Fe) and 10% GO/MIL-101 (Fe) were 117.74 and 186.20 mg·g–1, respectively. The adsorption isotherms were described by the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetic data suggested the pseudo-second order to be the best fit model. Abstract:A novel adsorbent (Fe3O4/HCO) was prepared via co-precipitation from a mix of ferriferrous oxide and a Ce-rich waste industrial sludge recovered from an optical polishing activity. The effect of system parameters including reaction time, pH, dose, temperature as well as initial concentration on the adsorption of Sb(III) were investigated by sequential batch tests. The Sb(III)/Fe3O4/HCO system quickly reached adsorption equilibrium within 2 h, was effective over a wide pH (3-7) and demonstrated excellent removal at a 60 mg/L Sb(III) concentration. Three isothermal adsorption models were assessed to describe the equilibrium data for Sb(III) with Fe3O4/HCO. Compared to the Freundlich and dubinin-radushkevich, the Langmuir isotherm model showed the best fit, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 22.853 mg/g, which exceeds many comparable absorbents. Four kinetic models, Pseudo-first-order, Pseudo-second-order, Elovich and Intra-particle, were used to fit the adsorption process. The analysis showed that the mechanism was pseudo-second-order and chemical adsorption played a dominant role in the adsorption of Sb(III) by Fe3O4/HCO (correlation coefficient R2 = 0.993). Thermodynamic calculations suggest that adsorption of Sb(III) ions was endothermic, spontaneous and a thermodynamically feasible process. The mechanism of the adsorption of Sb(III) on Fe3O4/HCO could be described by the synergistic adsorption of Sb (III) on Fe3O4, FeCe2O4 and hydrous ceric oxide. The Fe3O4/HCO sorbent appears to be an efficient and environment-friendly material for the removal of Sb(III) from wastewater.
Response surface modeling of lead (׀׀) removal by graphene oxide-Fe3O4 nanocomposite using central composite design

Abstract:Background: Magnetic graphene oxide (Fe3O4@SiO2-GO) nanocomposite was fabricated through a facile process and its application as an excellent adsorbent for lead (II) removal was also demonstrated by applying response surface methodology (RSM). Methods: Fe3O4@SiO2-GO nanocomposite was synthesized and characterized properly. The effects of four independent variables, initial pH of solution (3.5-8.5), nanocomposite dosage (1-60 mg L(-1)), contact time (2-30 min), and initial lead (II) ion concentration (0.5-5 mg L(-1)) on the lead (II) removal efficiency were investigated and the process was optimized using RSM. Using central composite design (CCD), 44 experiments were carried out and the process response was modeled using a quadratic equation as function of the variables. Results: The optimum values of the variables were found to be 6.9, 30.5 mg L(-1), 16 min, and 2.49 mg L(-1) for pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and lead (II) initial concentration, respectively. The amount of adsorbed lead (II) after 16 min was recorded as high as 505.81 mg g(-1) for 90 mg L(-1) initial lead (II) ion concentration. The Sips isotherm was found to provide a good fit with the adsorption data (KS = 256 L mg(-1), nS = 0.57, qm = 598.4 mg g(-1), and R(2) = 0.984). The mean free energy Eads was 9.901 kJ/mol which confirmed the chemisorption mechanism. The kinetic study determined an appropriate compliance of experimental data with the double exponential kinetic model (R(2) = 0.982). Conclusions: Quadratic and reduced models were examined to correlate the variables with the removal efficiency of Fe3O4@SiO2-GO. According to the analysis of variance, the most influential factors were identified as pH and contact time. At the optimum condition, the adsorption yield was achieved up to nearly 100 %.

Abstract:Eliminating arsenic contaminants has become an imperative issue due to its persistent and serious harm to the environment and human health. Herein, a novel FeZr-MOFs/GO nanocomposite for effectively removing As(V) was fabricated by growing Fe-based metal–organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) of MIL-101(Fe) on the graphene oxide (GO) surface with the addition of Zr(IV) dopants. The presence of GO, the doping amount of Zr ions, and the functional groups of the ligands were found to have an impact on the adsorption performance of Fe-MOFs. Notably, doping an appropriate amount of Zr(IV) resulted in a significant increase in water stability of MIL-101(Fe) and MIL-101(Fe)/GO nanocomposites. This improvement, along with chemical complexation and hydrogen bonding, played a pivotal role in the adsorption of As(V). The optimized FeZr-MOFs-0.2/GO (0.2 represented the molar ratio between Zr and Fe) nanocomposites demonstrated superior As(V) adsorption performance with an adsorption capacity of up to 91.69 mg·g −1 . Moreover, this system proven effective across a wide range of pH (2–10) and environmental matrices. This study not only provides attractive MOF nanocomposites for broadening the application of aqueous solutions, but also opens up a novel avenue for the rational design and development of nanocomposites with exceptional properties and stability.

Abstract:Antimony (Sb) contamination is a significant environmental issue in mining impacted areas, where the use of nanomaterials to remove such metalloid species has attracted much research attention. In this study, the simultaneous removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) was investigated using a reduced graphene oxide/Fe/Ni (rGO-Fe/Ni NPs) composite. Compared to rGO alone the composite exhibited enhanced removal efficiency. For rGO-Fe/Ni NPs the maximum Sb(III) and Sb(V) adsorption capacities were 2.00 and 1.41 mg·g−1, respectively, compared to 1.70 and 1.02 mg·g−1 for Sb(III) and Sb(V), respectively, when using rGO only. This indicated that Fe/Ni enhanced the simultaneous removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V). Advanced characterization via SEM and XPS before and after exposure to Sb indicated that both Sb(III) and Sb(V) were adsorbed on to the surface of rGO-Fe/Ni NPs, followed by oxidation of Sb(III) to Sb(V). Adsorption and oxidation kinetics both conformed to pseudo-second order models, where the mechanism for the simultaneous removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) by rGO-Fe/Ni NPs involved a combination of both adsorption and oxidation. Moreover, the practical adsorption capacity of rGO-Fe/Ni was not limited to Sb, since in a real mining wastewater; containing a mixture of metal(loid)s, while rGO-Fe/Ni exhibited a Sb adsorption capacity of 1.59 mg·g−1, it also exhibited similar adsorption capacities for As (2.61 mg·g−1), Pb (2.41 mg·g−1), and Cd (1.25 mg·g−1). The composite was also highly reusable with a removal efficiency for Sb(III) as high as 72.7% after 4 cycles of use. Thus, rGO-Fe/Ni NPs has significant potential for the practical removal of Sb species and other heavy metal(loid)s in mining impacted wastewaters.

Abstract:In this study, MIL-101(Fe), MIL-101(Fe,Cu), and graphene oxide (GO)/MIL-101(Fe,Cu) were synthesized to compose a novel sorbent. The adsorption properties of these three MOF-based composites were compared toward the removal of phosphate. Furthermore, the influencing factors including adsorption time, pH, temperature, and initial concentration on the adsorption capacity of phosphate on these materials as well as the reusability of the material were discussed. The structure of fabricated materials and the removal mechanism of phosphate on the composite material were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, and zeta potential. The results show that the maximum adsorption capacity of phosphate by the composite GO/MIL-101(Fe,Cu)-2% was 204.60 mg·g−1, which is higher than that of MIL-101(Fe,Cu) and MIL-101(Fe). likewise the specific surface area of GO/MIL-101(Fe,Cu)-2% is 778.11 m2/g is higher than that of MIL-101(Fe,Cuand MIL-101(Fe),which are 747.75 and 510.66 m2/g, respectively. The adsorption mechanism of phosphate is electrostatic attraction, forming coordination bonds and hydrogen bonds. The fabricated material is a promising adsorbent for the removal of phosphate with good reusability.

Abstract:Ball-milling is considered as an economical and simple technology to produce novel engineered materials. The ball-milled microscale zero valent iron/pyrite composite (BM-ZVI/FeS2) had been synthesized through ball-milling technology and applied for highly efficient sequestration of antimonate (Sb(V)) in aqueous solution. BM-ZVI/FeS2 exhibited good Sb(V) removal efficiency (≥ 99.18%) at initial concentration less than 100 mg Sb(V)/L. Compared to ball-milled zero valent iron (ZVI) and pyrite (FeS2), BM-ZVI/FeS2 exhibited extremely higher removal efficiency due to the good synergistic adsorption effect. BM-ZVI/FeS2 showed efficient removal performance at broad pH (2.6–10.6). Moreover, the coexisting anions had negligible inhibition influence on the Sb(V) removal. The antimony mine wastewater can be efficiently remediated by BM-ZVI/FeS2, and the residual Sb(V) concentrations (< 0.96 μg/L) can meet the mandatory discharge limit in drinking water (5 μg Sb/L). Experimental and model results demonstrated that endothermic reaction and chemisorption were involved in Sb(V) removal by BM-ZVI/FeS2. The XRD and XPS analyses confirmed that the complete corrosion of ZVI occurred on BM-ZVI/FeS2 after Sb(V) adsorption, resulting in the enhanced Sb(V) sequestration. Mechanism analyses showed that the excellent removal performance of BM-ZVI/FeS2 was ascribed to the high coverage of iron (hydr)oxide oxidized from ZVI. Because of the advantages of economical cost, high Sb(V) removal capacity and easy availability, BM-ZVI/FeS2 offers a promising adsorbent for Sb(V) remediation.
