Abstract:When an ionic conductor meets an electronic conductor, ions and electrons couple at the interface between ionic and electronic circuits, enabling a class of devices: ionotronics. Such a coupling gives innovations but can cause electrochemical breakdown. Rapid advances in hydrogel ionotronics, in which hydrogel serves as stretchable, transparent, ionic conductor, highlight an urgent need: a general approach and criterion to study electrochemical breakdown under AC condition. Here we study the breakdown behavior of a metal-hydrogel-metal ionotronic system subject to alternating voltages of various frequencies and amplitudes. First, we apply a sinusoidal voltage to the ionotronic system which is connected in series to a load resistor, and compare the waveforms of the applied voltage and the output voltage between the two ends of the load resistor at various frequencies and amplitudes. Electrochemical breakdown tends to take place at low frequencies and high amplitudes, and causes distortion of waveform of the output voltage. Next, we develop an electric circuit model, in which each hydrogel-metal junction is modeled as a constant phase element in parallel with a leakage resistor and the hydrogel is modeled as a resistor. Our experiments show that the electrochemical window is insensitive to the frequency and amplitude of applied voltage, as well as to the concentration of ions in the hydrogel. Through a combination of experiment and theory, we further propose a frequency-amplitude phase diagram. Different from DC condition, the breakdown behavior under AC condition depends not only on the amplitude of applied voltage, but also on the frequency of applied voltage. We also show that electrochemical reaction can be retarded by stretching the hydrogel and by increasing the frequency. It is hoped that this work will guide the development of stable and reliable hydrogel ionotronic devices.

Abstract:The Faradaic breakdown behaviors of hydrogel iontronic devices under high AC voltage is systematically studied, confirming the existence of side redox reactions in the electrical double layer of hydrogel interface. Interface barrier layers are then proposed to eliminate this issue, demonstrating long‐term durable hydrogel iontronic devices. Soft hydrogel iontronic devices, utilizing the assumed non‐Faradaic exchange of ions and electrons at the metal‐hydrogel interfaces, have been demonstrated with advantages of high stretchability, transparency, and biocompatibility. Yet, in real situation under high voltage, Faradaic reaction is inevitable, which can breakdown the device and lead to the low durability. Herein, the Faradaic breakdown behaviors of hydrogel iontronic devices under high AC voltage are systematically studied. Side reactions including electrode corrosion and water electrolysis are confirmed in the electrical double layer. Interface barrier layers are proposed to eliminate this issue. It is found that acetylene black (ACET) as modification layer can achieve the best performances, providing effective protection while maintaining the electrical performances. By leveraging ACET‐modified electrodes, long‐term durable iontronics, including electroluminescent devices and high‐output triboelectric nanogenerators, are successfully demonstrated. This work can provide insightful strategies for developing practical hydrogel iontronic devices.

An Intrinsic Self-Healable, Anti-Freezable and Ionically Conductive Hydrogel for Soft Ionotronics Induced by Imidazolyl Cross-Linker Molecules Anchored with Dynamic Disulfide Bonds

Abstract:Hydrogels are ideal materials for flexible electronic devices based on their smooth ion channels and considerable mechanical flexibility. A substantial volume of aqueous solution is required to enable the smooth flow of ions, resulting in the agony of low-temperature freezing; besides, long-term exposure to bending/tensile tress triggers fatigue issues. Therefore, it is a great challenge to prepare hydrogels with both freeze-resistance and long-term durability. Herein, a polyacrylic acid-based hydrogel with both hydrophobic interaction and dynamic reversible covalent bonding cross-linking networks is preparing (DC-hydrogel) by polymerizing a bi-functional imidazole-type ionic liquid monomer with integrated disulfide and alkene bonds (DS/DB-IL) and an octadecyl methacrylate, achieving self-healing. The DS/DB-IL anchored into the polymer backbone has a high affinity with water, reducing the freezing point of water, while the DS/DB-IL with free ions provides superior ionic conductivity to the DC-hydrogel. The polyacrylic acid with abundant carboxyl gives hydrogel good self-adhesiveness to different substrates. Ionotronics with resistance-type sensors with stable output performance are fabricated and explored its application to joint motion and health information. Moreover, hydrogel-based sensing arrays with high resolution and accuracy are fabricated to identify 2D distribution of stress. The hydrogels have great promise for various ionotronics in many fields.

Abstract:Stretchable ionic conductors such as hydrogels and ionic-liquid-based gels (aka ionogels) have garnered great attention as they enable the development of soft ionotronics. Notably, soft ionotronic devices inevitably operate in humid environments or under mechanical loads. However, many previously reported hydrogels and ionogels, however, are unstable in environments with varying humidity levels owing to hydrophilicity, and their liquid components (i.e., ionic liquid, water) may leak easily from polymer matrices under mechanical loads, causing deterioration of device performance. This work presents novel hydrophobic ionogels with strong ionic liquid retention capability. The ionogels are ambiently and mechanically stable, capable of not absorbing moisture in environments with high relative humidity and almost not losing liquid components during long periods of mechanical loading. Moreover, the ionogels exhibit desirable conductivity (10−4–10−5 S cm−1), large rupturing strain (>2000%), moderate fractocohesive length (0.51–1.03 mm), and wide working temperature range (−60 to 200 °C). An ionic skin is further designed by integrating the concept of sensory artificial skins and triboelectric nanogenerators, which can convert multiple stimuli into various types of signals, including resistance, capacitance, short-circuit current, and open-circuit voltage. This work may open new avenues for the development of soft ionotronics with stable performance.

An Environment-Tolerant Ion-Conducting Double-Network Composite Hydrogel for High-Performance Flexible Electronic Devices

Abstract:High-performance ion-conducting hydrogels (ICHs) are vital for developing flexible electronic devices. However, the robustness and ion-conducting behavior of ICHs deteriorate at extreme temperatures, hampering their use in soft electronics. To resolve these issues, a method involving freeze-thawing and ionizing radiation technology is reported herein for synthesizing a novel double-network (DN) ICH based on a poly(ionic liquid)/MXene/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PMP DN ICH) system. The well-designed ICH exhibits outstanding ionic conductivity (63.89 mS cm-1 at 25 °C), excellent temperature resistance (- 60-80 °C), prolonged stability (30 d at ambient temperature), high oxidation resistance, remarkable antibacterial activity, decent mechanical performance, and adhesion. Additionally, the ICH performs effectively in a flexible wireless strain sensor, thermal sensor, all-solid-state supercapacitor, and single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator, thereby highlighting its viability in constructing soft electronic devices. The highly integrated gel structure endows these flexible electronic devices with stable, reliable signal output performance. In particular, the all-solid-state supercapacitor containing the PMP DN ICH electrolyte exhibits a high areal specific capacitance of 253.38 mF cm-2 (current density, 1 mA cm-2) and excellent environmental adaptability. This study paves the way for the design and fabrication of high-performance multifunctional/flexible ICHs for wearable sensing, energy-storage, and energy-harvesting applications.

Abstract:Despite the promising progress in conductive hydrogels made with pure conducting polymer, great challenges remain in the interface adhesion and robustness in long-term monitoring. To address these challenges, Prof. Seung Hwan Ko and Taek-Soo Kim’s team introduced a laser-induced phase separation and adhesion method for fabricating conductive hydrogels consisting of pure poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate on polymer substrates. The laser-induced phase separation and adhesion treated conducting polymers can be selectively transformed into conductive hydrogels that exhibit wet conductivities of 101.4 S cm−1 with a spatial resolution down to 5 μm. Moreover, they maintain impedance and charge-storage capacity even after 1 h of sonication. The micropatterned electrode arrays demonstrate their potential in long-term in vivo signal recordings, highlighting their promising role in the field of bioelectronics.

Abstract:Hydrogels are ideal interfacing materials for on-skin healthcare devices, yet their susceptibility to dehydration hinders their practical use. While incorporating hygroscopic metal salts can prevent dehydration and maintain ionic conductivity, concerns arise regarding metal toxicity due to the passage of small ions through the skin barrier. Herein, an antidehydration hydrogel enabled by the incorporation of zwitterionic oligomers into its network is reported. This hydrogel exhibits exceptional water retention properties, maintaining approximate to 88% of its weight at 40% relative humidity, 25 degrees C for 50 days and about 84% after being heated at 50 degrees C for 3 h. Crucially, the molecular weight design of the embedded oligomers prevents their penetration into the epidermis, as evidenced by experimental and molecular simulation results. The hydrogel allows stable signal acquisition in electrophysiological monitoring of humans and plants under low-humidity conditions. This research provides a promising strategy for the development of epidermis-safe and biocompatible antidehydration hydrogel interfaces for on-skin devices. Hydrogels are crucial for on-skin healthcare devices, yet dehydration limits their utility. An antidehydration hydrogel featuring superior hydrating zwitterionic oligomers is presented. This hydrogel excels in antidehydration performance and prevents skin penetration. It guarantees stable signal acquisition during electrophysiological monitoring under low-humidity conditions, holding potential for epidermis-safe on-skin devices.image

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogel electrolytes have been widely explored in aqueous zinc‐iodine batteries (AZIBs), in light of their intrinsic strong water‐retention capability and superior flexibility of hydrogel network. However, hydrogel‐based AZIBs are still facing challenges due to the inferior ionic conductivity, dendrite formation, and corresponding fatigue‐induced damage. Herein, a hydrogel electrolyte is designed and engineered with preferentially aligned porous structures, where Zn 2+ can promptly transport along the pores. AZIBs fabricated from the hydrogel electrolyte exhibited distinct cycling stability over 1,000 h (500 cycles) at 0.5 mA cm −2 . Moreover, in light of the substantially improved mechanical robustness, the hydrogel electrolyte network remained intact over a 27,000‐cycle charging/discharging test at 5 A g −1 , with a slight change in capacity, surpassing most previously reported AZIBs. Such kind of hydrogel electrolyte‐based AZIBs can be further explored as the flexible power system for wearable devices, enabling significantly accelerated wound healing through electrical stimulation over the epidermal wounds. This work sheds light on hydrogel electrolytes design for long‐life aqueous zinc‐based batteries, with great potential as power systems for wearable and implantable devices.

Abstract:Biodegradable electronic devices that physically disappear in physiological or environmental solutions are of critical importance for widespread applications in healthcare management and environmental sustainability. The precise modulation of materials and devices dissolution with on-demand operational lifetime, however, remain a key challenge. Silicon nanomembranes (Si NMs) are one of the essential semiconductor components for high-performance biodegradable electronics at the system level. In this work, we discover unusual hydrolysis behaviors of Si NMs that are significantly dependent on the dimensions of devices as well as their surface chemistry statuses. The experiments show a pronounced increase in hydrolysis rates of p-type Si NMs with larger sizes, and mechanical stirring introduces a significant decrease in dissolution rates. The presence of phosphates and potassium ions in solutions, or lower dopant levels of Si NMs will facilitate the degradation of Si NMs and will also lead to a stronger size-dependent effect. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to reveal ion adsorption mechanisms of Si NMs under different surface charge statuses and confirm our experimental observations. Through geometrical designs, Si NM-based electrode arrays with tunable dissolution lifetime are formed, and their electrochemical properties are analyzed in vitro. These results offer new controlling strategies to modulate the operational time frames of Si NMs through geometrical design and surface chemistry modification and provide crucial fundamental understandings for engineering high-performance biodegradable electronics.

Abstract:Hydrogels have emerged as a promising material candidate toward seamless bioelectronic interfaces. This review summarizes the design strategies of extreme hydrogels for diverse bioelectronic applications. The last decades have witnessed rapid growth of hydrogel bioelectronics. Traditional hydrogels face challenges when working under extreme conditions, leading to a loss of stabilities and functionalities. This review provides a systematic overview of hydrogels capable of working under extreme conditions, with a focus on their applications in bioelectronic systems. These hydrogels are summarized into categories of anti‐mechanical damage, anti‐detachment, anti‐swelling, anti‐freezing, and anti‐foreign body response. Strategies including material development and structural design that can endow the hydrogels with the above extreme properties are introduced. Finally, current challenges and new opportunities in developing extreme hydrogel bioelectronic devices and systems are discussed.

Hofmeister-Effect-Guided Ionohydrogel Design as Printable Bioelectronic Devices

Abstract:Bioelectronic platforms convert biological signals into electrical signals by utilizing biocatalysts that provide tools to monitor the activity of cells and tissues. Traditional conducting materials such as solid conductors and conducting polymers are confronted with a great challenge in sophisticated production processes and mismatch at biological tissues-machine interfaces. Furthermore, the biocatalyst, the key functional component in the electron-transfer reaction for bio-signal detection denatures easily in an ionic conductive solution. Herein, a bionic strategy is elaborately developed to synthesize an ionohydrogel bioelectronic platform that possesses extracellular-matrix-like habitat by employing hydrated ionic liquids (HILs) as ionic solvent and bioprotectant. This strategy realizes an integration of ionic and enzymatic electronic circuits and minimization of the disparities between tissues and artificial machines. The Hofmeister effect of HILs on enzyme proteins and polymer chains ensures the high bioactivity of the enzymes and greatly improves the mechanical properties of the ionohydrogels. Moreover, hydrogen bonds formed by ILs, water, and polymer chains greatly improve the water-retention of the ionohydrogel and give it more practical significance. Consequently, the promising ionohydrogel is partly printed and fabricated into wearable devices as a pain-free humoral components monitor and a wireless motion-sensor.

Abstract:Facing the challenges posed by exponentially increasing e-waste,the development of recyclable and tran-sient electronics has paved the way to an environmentally-friendly progression strategy,where electron-ics can disintegrate and/or degrade into eco-friendly end products in a controlled way.Natural polymers possess cost and energy efficiency,easy modification,and fast degradation,all of which are ideal prop-erties for transient electronics.Gelatin is especially attractive due to its unique thermoreversible gelation processes,yet its huge potential as a multifunctional electronic material has not been well-researched due to its limited mechanical strength and low conductivity.Herein,we explored versatile applications of gelatin-based hydrogels through the assistance of multifunctional additives like carbon nanotubes to enhance their electromechanical performances.The optimized gelatin hydrogel displays not only a high conductivity of 0.93 S/m,electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of 39.6 dB,and tensile stress tolerance of 263 kPa,but also shows a negative permittivity phenomenon,which may find versatile applications in novel electronics.As a proof of concept,hydrogels were assembled as wearable sensors to sensitively de-tect static and dynamic pressures and strains generated by solids,liquids,and airflow,as well as diverse body movements.Furthermore,the recyclability,biocompatibility,and degradability of gelatin-based hy-drogels were well studied and analyzed.This work outlines a facile method to design multifunctional transient materials for wearable,sustainable,and eco-friendly electronics.
Photo-programmable hydrogel iontronics for electrically and chromatically rewritable circuits

Abstract:Hydrogel-based iontronics is emerging as a promising frontier in healthcare and human-machine interfacing (HMI), offering excellent compatibility with biological systems in terms of electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties. However, conventional hydrogel systems have limitations in dynamically regulating their electrical and optical properties, which restricts their use in adaptive electronics and responsive interfaces. In this study, we present a new hydrogel system with UV photochemistry-induced reversible conductivity, enabling reversible changes in conductivity. Unlike typical photo-responsive hydrogels that revert to their original states upon removal of the light source, the new hydrogel can maintain its activated states without continuous light exposure, facilitating practical applications. By leveraging the photobase triphenylmethane leucohydroxide and photoacid n-nitrobenzaldehyde, we achieve a significant increase in photo-induced conductivity compared to existing photo-ionic hydrogels. Combining the effective photo-induced conductivity and the accompanied photochromatic effect, we demonstrate a full hydrogel-based stylus pad capable of tracking motion and strokes, and a soft calculator keypad with programmable conductivity and imprinted patterns. These advancements underscore the importance of actively controlling localized conductivity and processing light inputs in hydrogels, exhibiting their potential for diverse applications in bioelectronics and HMI.
Acid-Induced In Situ Phase Separation and Percolation for Constructing Bi-Continuous Phase Hydrogel Electrodes with High Conductivity and Robust Mechanical Properties

Abstract:Conductive polymer hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for wearable bioelectronics due to their inherent biocompatibility and stability in physiological conditions. However, achieving hydrogel electrodes with excellent conductivity and mechanical properties is challenging due to the inherent contradiction between the hydrophobicity of conductive materials and the hydrophilicity of hydrogels. Herein, we introduce a hydrogel integrating PVA, PVP and PEDOT:PSS, and propose a single-step acid-induced strategy that not only facilitates gelation but also ensures in situ phase separation of PEDOT:PSS under mild conditions, resulting in a unique bi-continuous phase structure combining excellent electrical and mechanical properties. Upon reaching the percolation threshold at 4.8 mg mL-1 PEDOT:PSS, the electrical conductivity surges to 906 mS cm-1. The hydrogel also exhibits unprecedented mechanical resilience, with a fracture strain of 1103%, significantly surpassing previous reports of PEDOT:PSS-based conductive materials. This stretchability, coupled with low mechanical hysteresis (dissipation energy less than 1.2 kJ m-3) and a resilience rate of approximately 95%, highlights its superior mechanical integrity and fatigue resistance. The hydrogel electrodes demonstrate substantially lower noise power (4.9 μV²) compared to commercial gel electrodes (1541.8 μV²) and Ag/AgCl electrodes (>34.4 μV²). Stretchable, Healable, and Degradable Soft Ionic Microdevices Based on Multifunctional Soaking-Toughened Dual-Dynamic-Network Organohydrogel Electrolytes

Abstract:Electronic materials and devices that can mimic biological systems featured with elasticity, toughness, self-healing, degradability, and environmental friendliness drive the technological developments in fields spanning from bioelectronics, biomedical diagnosis and therapy, electronic skin, and soft robotics to Internet-of-Things with "green" electronics. Among them, ionic devices based on gel electrolytes have emerged as attractive candidates for biomimetic systems. Herein, we presented a straightforward approach to demonstrate soft ionic microdevices based on a versatile organohydrogel platform acting as both a free-standing, stretchable, adhesive, healable, and entirely degradable support and a highly conductive, dehydration- and freezing-tolerant electrolyte. This is achieved by forming a gelatin/ferric-ion-cross-linked polyacrylic acid (GEL/PAA) dual dynamic supramolecular network followed by soaking into a NaCl glycerol/water solution to further toughen the gelatin network via solvent displacement, thus obtaining a high toughness of 1.34 MJ·cm–3 and a high ionic conductivity (>7 mS·cm–1). Highly stretchable and multifunctional ionic microdevices are then fabricated based on the organohydrogel electrolytes by simple transfer printing of carbon-based microelectrodes onto the prestretched gel surface. Proof-of-concept microdevices including resistive strain sensors and microsupercapacitors are demonstrated, which displayed outstanding stretchability to 300% strain, resistance to dehydration for >6 months, autonomous self-healing, and rapid room-temperature degradation within hours. Abstract:Physically transient electronics, which can disappear under certain conditions in aqueous solutions or biofluids, has attracted increasing attention because of its potential applications as "green" electronics and biomedical devices. Till now, the excitation of the transient process is achieved by passive dissolution of the encapsulation layer, which has a very limited control over the process. Here, we report a novel light-triggered encapsulation strategy via a bilayer of a light-responsive hydrogel and oxide to control the degradation on demand in aqueous environment. The hydrogel serving as a barrier between the environment and oxide limited the water's movement and penetration, leading to improved stable operation time. More importantly, the light-responsive hydrogel underwent a gel-to-solution transition upon applying ultraviolet (UV) light. The drastic change of the water movement enabled a transient process triggered on demand. Via this encapsulation scheme, we demonstrated fully soluble resistors and resistive random access memory devices with the UV light-triggered transient process. This work provides a new pathway to design transient devices with controllable degradation to meet various requirements of green electronics and biomedical devices.
In‐Situ Spontaneous Electropolymerization Enables Robust Hydrogel Electrolyte Interfaces in Aqueous Batteries

Abstract:Hydrogels hold great promise as electrolytes for emerging aqueous batteries, for which establishing a robust electrode-hydrogel interface is crucial for mitigating side reactions. Conventional hydrogel electrolytes fabricated by ex-situ polymerization through either thermal stimulation or photo exposure cannot ensure complete interfacial contact with electrodes. Herein, we introduce an in-situ electropolymerization approach for constructing hydrogel electrolytes. The hydrogel is spontaneously generated during the initial cycling of the battery, eliminating the need of additional initiators for polymerization. The involvement of electrodes during the hydrogel synthesis yields well-bonded and deep infiltrated electrode-electrolyte interfaces. As a case study, we attest that, the in-situ formed polyanionic hydrogel in Zn-MnO2 battery substantially improves the stability and kinetics of both Zn anode and porous MnO2 cathode owing to the robust interfaces. This research provides insight to the function of hydrogel electrolyte interfaces and constitute a critical advancement in designing highly durable aqueous batteries.

Abstract:The emerging cryoprotectant replacement method endows hydrogels with nondrying and antifreezing properties, but the low conductivity still limits wider electronic applications. In this work, the Hofmeister effect and electrostatic interaction are introduced to improve the conductivity of organohydrogels and their enhancement mechanism are studied in depth. The Hofmeister effect mainly influences the physical properties, such as the pore structure and mechanical strength, which subsequently impacts ion transfer during the solvent replacement process. The lithium and sodium bonds formed by the electrostatic interaction play a more important role in the conductivity of organohydrogels and an overall picture is presented based on the synergistic enhancement of the Hofmeister effect and electrostatic interaction to achieve highly ionic conductive organohydrogels. The champion organohydrogels are applied as soft ionic conductors and antireflective layers in triboelectric, photovoltaic, and thermoelectric applications. The proposed mechanism advances the understanding of the contribution of ions to organohydrogels for wearable electronics. To reduce the decrease of the conductivity of organohydrogels caused by solvent replacement, the enhancement mechanism of the Hofmeister effect and electrostatic interaction is investigated. Formation of stable lithium and sodium bonds by the electrostatic interaction plays important roles in keeping the conductivity of organohydrogels. The organohydrogels can be used in triboelectric, photovoltaic, and thermoelectric applications.
