Abstract:In the contemporary global landscape, the intersection of innovation, foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, economic growth, and renewable energy consumption has become a focal point of academic, economic, and policy discussions. As nations strive to navigate the complex challenges of sustainable development, understanding the intricate relationships among these critical variables becomes imperative for shaping effective policies and strategies. This study examines the interrelationship between determinants of renewable energy consumption. In a holistic framework, the paper tests the nexus of innovation, foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, economic growth, and renewable energy consumption. We analyse these variables' potential causal linkages and feedback mechanisms using qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study collected data from Word Bank from 1990- 2022 in 60 countries. The study also employs a dynamic analysis of unrestricted fixed and random effects. The research applied Granger causality tests to establish the direction of causality between the variables. The findings suggest a bidirectional relationship between innovation, FDI inflows, economic growth and renewable energy consumption. The empirical results show that renewable energy is crucial in mediating the relationship between economic growth and innovation. We discuss the implications of these results for policymakers and future research.
