Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) as a commonly used semiconductor material has aroused extensive research attention in various fields, such as field-effect transistors, solar cells, luminescent devices, and sensors, because of its excellent light-electrical features and large exciton bonding energy. Herein, ultrasmall Au nanoparticles with tunable size decorated mesoporous ZnO nanospheres were synthesized via facile formaldehyde-assisted metal-ligand cross-linking strategy, where these active Au species could be transferred into Au nanoparticles in the frameworks by various reduction strategies. Typically, mesoporous ZnO-Au with a photoreduction technique showed superior ethanol sensing performance (ca. 159 for 50 ppm at 200 °C) because of its high surface area, dual-mesoporous structure, and interface effect (electron effect, surface catalytic/adsorption). Moreover, the mesoporous ZnO-Au composites by photoreduction show much better performance than those via H2 reduction and NaBH4 reduction, which is ascribed to the providential size of Au nanoparticles (ca. 6.6 nm) and abundant oxygen defects in the composites. In particular, the selectivity and sensitivity of mesoporous ZnO-Au far exceeds those of materials loaded with other noble metals (Pt, Pd, and Ag). The sensing mechanism of mesoporous ZnO-Au for ethanol is attributed to classical surface adsorption/catalytic reaction, where strong sensitization effect (electron and chemical) and the spillover effect of Au nanoparticles in the catalytic reaction cause superior ethanol sensing performances. In situ FTIR and GC-MS measurement revealed that the catalytic oxidation of ethanol follows the process of dehydrogenation and deep oxidation, that is, dehydrogenation to acetaldehyde, and then further oxidation to carbon dioxide and water.

Abstract:In this work, Au decorated In-doped SnO2 (Au@In2O3-SnO2) porous nanotubes (PNTs) were fabricated via electrospinning and a subsequent calcination treatment. The In-doped SnO2 PNTs with various Au/Sn molar ratios possessed good ethanol sensing properties. As a result, the 3 % mol Au decorated In-doped SnO2 PNTs had high response to ethanol (Ra/Rg = 316.8-100 ppm) and can detect ethanol down to 50 ppb at a low working temperature of 150 degrees C. In addition, the gas sensor also had high selectivity, good reversibility and long-term stability. The enhanced sensing performance was mainly ascribed to the increase of oxygen vacancies, cata-lytic activity of Au nanocatalysts, and porous structures. The sensing results demonstrated that Au@In2O3-SnO2 PNTs had the great potential for ethanol detecting, and provide a facile method for rationally designing other types of gas sensors.
Design of Highly Sensitive and Selective Ethanol Sensor Based on Α-Fe2o3/nb2o5 Heterostructure.

Abstract:The introduction of heterostructures is a new approach in gas sensing due to their easy and quick transport of charges. Herein, facile hydrothermal and solid-state techniques are employed to synthesize an α-Fe2O3/Nb2O5 heterostructure. The morphology, microstructure, crystallinity and surface composition of the synthesized heterostructures are investigated by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analyses. The successful fabrication of the heterostructures was achieved via the mutual incorporation of α-Fe2O3 nanorods with Nb2O5 interconnected nanoparticles (INPs). A sensor based on the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure with a high surface area exhibited enhanced gas-sensing features, maintaining high selectivity and sensitivity, and a considerable recovery percentage towards ethanol gas. The sensing response of the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure at lower operating temperature (160 °C) is around nine times higher than a pure Nb2O5 (INP) sensor at 180 °C with the flow of 100 ppm ethanol gas. The sensors also show excellent selectivity, good long-term stability and a rapid response/recovery time (8s/2s, respectively) to ethanol. The superior electronic conductivity and upgraded sensitivity performance of gas sensors based on the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure are attributed due to its unique structural features, high specific surface area and the synergic effect of the n–n heterojunction. The promising results demonstrate the potential application of the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure as a good sensing material for the fabrication of ethanol sensors.
Functionalization of Flower-Like Zno Nanostructures with Au@Cuo Nanoparticles for Detection of Ethanol

Abstract:Hierarchical flower-like ZnO nanospheres were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method using sodium citrate as soft template. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray, inductively coupled plasma atomic emissions spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. The SEM and TEM results showed that the 3D ZnO nanospheres were consisted of 2D ZnO nanosheets. The diameter of the nanospheres was 3-4 μm and the thickness of the nanosheets was 60-70 nm. In order to improve the ethanol-sensing properties, the 3D ZnO nanostructures were functionalized with Au@CuO nanoparticles. Because of the protection of the CuO shell from aggregation, the size of the Au@CuO nanoparticles were smaller than that of the Au nanoparticles after annealing. The sensing response of 0.7% Au@0.3% CuO loaded ZnO was close to that of 1% Au loaded ZnO, and much higher than that of the unfunctionalized ZnO. The good performance was probably attributed to the high intensities of the chemical adsorption oxygen and the active sites of the Au@CuO functionalized ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:Local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and noble metal modification/doping are classical methods for improving the performance of metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS)-based gas sensors. However, relatively less attention is paid to their synergies. In particular, research on synergistic gas-sensing technology that combines sunlight activation with other methods is significant for using friendly energy. In this study, Au-decorated ZnO (Au/ZnO) nano-structured materials (NMs) are successfully synthesised using a cost-effective nano-seed-assisted chemical bath and UV irradiation growth methods. The sensor based on this material exhibits superior performance in ethanol vapour under simulated sunlight, maintaining high sensitivity and repeatability at a low optimal working temperature. In particular, the sensitivity to 100 ppm of ethanol is 7.5 times better and the response time is 20 times shorter ( t res < 1 s) in simulated sunlight than in the dark environment. The limit of detection (LOD) of ethanol is as low as 97 ppb, which is much lower than the concentration in exhaled breath of driving under the influence of alcohol according to Chinese law (20–80 ppm). This study provides a reliable and ultra-fast ethanol detection method, with potential applications in environmental monitoring and traffic safety. A possible gas-sensitive mechanism of the Au/ZnO ethanol vapour sensor is proposed based on the synergistic effect between simulated sunlight activation (LSPR, humidity resistance and thermal activation) and noble metal modification (electron sensitisation and chemical sensitisation). It provides a promising method for exploring the utilisation of sunlight for rapid gas detection.

Abstract:In this paper, AuPd alloy nanoparticles (NPs) are prepared by co-reduction method using double reducing agents. Different mass percentages of AuPd alloy NPs loaded ZnO nanomaterials are prepared by classical impregnation method. The gas sensing properties of the sensor are studied. 0.5 wt% AuPd–ZnO exhibits a higher gas sensing response (Ra/Rg = 32, 50 ppm ethanol), which is 1.88 times that of ZnO gas sensing response. At the same time, the response/recovery time is 2 s/29 s. Compared with ZnO, the recovery time is reduced by 55 s. At last, the sensing mechanism in the process of gas sensing test is analyzed based on AuPd alloy NPs and ZnO.

Abstract:In this work, sensors based on the ZnO nanowire arrays/CuO nanospheres heterostructure were prepared by using the simple low temperature hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX) were used to characterize the crystal phase, structure and surface morphology of the as-prepared samples, respectively. The sensing characteristics of the as prepared samples were systematically measured. Obviously, the sensors based on the ZnO/CuO heterostructure exhibited excellent sensor parameters than pure CuO nanospheres. The response value of the ZnO/CuO heterostructure sensor with the growth time of 5 h (ZC-2) to 100 ppm of ethanol gas is up to 55.4 at 122 °C, which is about 8.8 fold and 3.4 fold more than that of pure CuO nanospheres (R = 6.3) and ZnO nanowire arrays (R = 16.4), respectively. In addition, the ZC-2 sensor exhibits the excellent selectivity for ethanol compared to other test gases. Significant improvement of the gas sensing characteristics was related to the formation of n-p heterojunction. The prepared ZC-2 gas sensor exhibits broad application prospects in the detection of ethanol.
Construction of ZnO@ZIF-CoZn bimetallic core-shell nanospheres for enhanced ethanol sensing performance

Abstract:In order to achieve highly sensitive, stable and preferential monitoring of ethanol, a new core-shell structure of (zeolite imidazole framework-CoZn) was hydrothermally synthesized to meet actual detection requirements. The micro-morphology, crystal phase and element composition of the synthesized materials were studied by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS and other characterization methods. It was found that the porous ZIF-CoZn film (∼100 nm) was uniformly and densely coated on the surface of the ZnO nanospheres (∼400 nm), and a core-shell structure of was successfully synthesized. In the gas sensitivity test, the response of to 100 ppm ethanol reached 18.4 at 200 °C, which is almost 3.6 times than that of pure ZnO, and the optimal working temperature of was lower than that of pure ZnO (240 °C). In addition, exhibited excellent selectivity and stability to ethanol. A heterojunction model and surface sensing response are proposed to explain the enhanced sensing response. Therefore, based on the unique nanostructure, low cost, high sensitivity and excellent selectivity of ethanol sensing performance, is expected to become a promising candidate in the ethanol sensor market.

Abstract:In this paper, silver (Ag) nanoparticles modified zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (Ag–ZnO) were prepared by a simple solid-state reaction. Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O and AgNO 3 were grinded and mixed in proportion and calcined at 500 °C for 2 h. The molar ratios of Ag to Zn in the precursors were 0, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, 7.0 and 10.0%, respectively. The microstructure of Ag–ZnO before and after modification was observed by scanning electron microscope. The existence of Ag was proved by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectrum and Raman spectra. The lattice of ZnO after modification of Ag particles was changed. Ag-modified ZnO nanoparticles showed good gas sensitivity to ethanol due to the increasing oxygen vacancy amounts. The 5.0% modified Ag–ZnO based gas sensor obtained the fastest response recovery and the highest sensitivity to ethanol. The Ag–ZnO-based gas sensor will be a promising candidate in the application of ethanol detect.

Abstract:We report fabrication and characterization of an ethanol sensor using aligned ZnO nanorods. The ZnO nanorods have an average diameter of 50nm and an average length of 0.5μm. The sensor response Ra/Rg, where Ra and Rg are the resistance in air and in ethanol vapor, respectively, is about 10 to 1ppm ethanol, and increases to about 100 as the ethanol concentration is raised to 100ppm. The mechanism of the highly sensitive ethanol detection is discussed.

Abstract:The ZnO/CuO heterostructures were synthesized by two simple methods. The structural and morphological characterizations of the as-deposited samples were well evaluated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The gas sensing characteristics of the pure CuO and ZnO/CuO heterostructure were discussed. By comparison, the ZnO/CuO heterostructure sensor synthesized by water bath deposition has a higher response than pure CuO obviously. At the optimal working temperature, the response of the CuO-ZnO gas sensor to ethanol (100 ppm) reached 31.2, which was about 4.3 times higher than the original CuO nanoparticles. Besides, this heterojunction also showed good selectivity towards ethanol. The ZnO/CuO heterostructure provides a feasible method for preparing high performance ethanol sensor

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) semiconductor nanostructure has been widely used for gas sensor devices. In this work, a high performance gas sensor based on Au-functionalized ZnO nanorods was fabricated. Au nanoparticles were successfully immobilized onto the surface of ZnO nanorods to serve as a sensitizer by a facile solution reduction process. The hybrid Au/ZnO nanorods have been systematically characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM and optical absorption spectrum. Gas sensing tests reveal that the Au/ZnO sensor has remarkably enhanced performance compared to pure ZnO. It could detect ethanol gas in a wide concentration range with very high response, fast response–recovery time, good selectivity and stable repeatability. The possible sensing mechanism is discussed. The superior sensing features indicate the present Au/ZnO nanorods are promising for gas sensors.
Highly efficient ethanol sensor based on controllable synthesized ZnO hollow flower spheres

Abstract:ZnO hollow flower spheres were successfully prepared by the low-cost and easy-to-operate solvent thermal method in combination with heat treatment. Characterization of the samples are finished via XRD, SEM, TEM, FIB and BET. It can be found that the growth time can largely affect the structure of the ZnO hollow flower spheres. The ZnO hollow flower spheres are regularly stacked by ultra-thin and porous nanosheets. And the size of spheres increases along with the growth time. The sensing properties of ZnO hollow flower spheres with different growth time were investigated. It can be found that the ZnO hollow flower spheres with the growth time of 4 h exhibit superior sensing performance in ethanol detection at the optimal operating temperature of 315 °C. And, the ZnO hollow flower spheres have a good linear response to ethanol in concentration range of 1-100 ppm. The ZnO hollow flower spheres based gas sensor also has good selectivity and reliable stability. The good sensing performance of the ZnO hollow flower spheres can be attributed to the hollow structure, which brings larger surface area and large number of active sites. It is believed that the ZnO hollow flower spheres have great potential in practical application.

Functionalization of ZnO Nanorods with Au Nanodots via In Situ Reduction for High-Performance Detection of Ethyl Acetate

Abstract:Ethyl acetate is a critical medical indicator for detecting certain types of cancer. However, at present, available sensitive materials often exhibit drawbacks, such as high operating temperatures and poor responses to low concentrations of ethyl acetate. In this study, a ZnO nanorod sensing material was prepared using high-temperature annealing and a hydrothermally synthesized metal-organic framework (MOF) as a template. Au nanodots (AuNDs) were subsequently modified on the ZnO nanorods using an in situ ion reduction, which provided a better dispersion of Au nanodots compared with that obtained using the common reductant method. A variety of characterization methods indicate that the highly dispersed AuNDs, which possess a high catalytic activity, were loaded onto the surface as active centers, leading to a significant augmentation in the adsorption of oxygen on the surface compared with the original ZnO material. Consequently, the AuND@ZnO material exhibited heightened responsiveness to ethyl acetate at a lower operating temperature. The Au@ZnO-based sensor has a response rate (Ra/Rg) of 41.8 to 20 ppm ethyl acetate gas at 140 °C, marking a 17.4-fold increase compared with that of the original material. Due to its low power consumption and high responsiveness, AuND@ZnO is a promising candidate for the detection of ethyl acetate gas in medical applications.

Preparation of Au@ZnO Nanofilms by Combining Magnetron Sputtering and Post-Annealing for Selective Detection of Isopropanol

Abstract:We demonstrate the highly sensitive and fast response/recovery gas sensors for detecting isopropanol (IPA), in which the Au-nanoparticles-modified ZnO (Au@ZnO) nanofilms act as the active layers. The data confirm that both the response and the response/recovery speed for the detection of IPA are significantly improved by adding Au nanoparticles on the surface of ZnO nanofilms. The gas sensor with an Optimum Au@ZnO nanofilm exhibits the highest responses of 160 and 7 to the 100 and 1 ppm IPA at 300 °C, which indicates high sensitivity and a very low detecting limit. The sensor also exhibits a very short response/recovery time of 4/15 s on the optimized Au@ZnO nanofilm, which is much shorter than that of the sensor with a pure ZnO nanofilm. The mechanisms of the performance improvement in the sensors are discussed in detail. Both the electronic sensitization and the chemical sensitization of the ZnO nanofilms are improved by the modified Au nanoparticles, which not only regulate the thickness of the depletion layer but also increase the amount of adsorbed oxygen species on the surfaces. This work proposes a strategy to develop a highly sensitive gas sensor for real-time monitoring of IPA.

Abstract:ZnO nanosheets exhibit notably interesting gas sensing performances due to their great carrier transport and high special surface area. However, not only the 2D nanosheets tend to stack suppressing the surface area, but also the pristine ZnO cannot show desired ethanol sensing properties. Herein, segregated ZnO-In2O3 porous nanosheets are synthesized facilely via one-pot solvothermal method. The Indium doping stems the porous nanosheets stacking, as well as induces lots of heterojunctions. Due to the specific porous structure for high gas accessibility, thickness less than double Debye length, abundant reaction sites and heterojunctions, the segregated ZnO-In2O3 nanosheets exhibit remarkable ethanol sensing performance (LOD of 100 ppb, response/recovery time of 3/8 s, and great repeatability and selectivity under natural humidity for a long period). This study provides a prospect for practical applications of ZnO-In2O3 ethanol sensors.

Abstract:At the interfaces between different materials, electronic systems with unusual electronic properties can be generated. Here, we report an In2O3/Si nanoheterostructures prepared by depositing indium grain film on silicon nanoporous pillar array (Si-NPA) by a vacuum thermal evaporation technique and a following thermal oxidation method. The composition and morphology of In2O3 film on Si-NPA were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which disclosed that the In2O3 film is composed of a layer of In2O3 nanospheres with massive interfaces coating on Si-NPA. The sensor based on In2O3/Si-NPA showed high selectivity to ethanol, and demonstrated a high response of 3.38 at the extremely low ethanol gas concentration of 2 ppm. The response and recovery times to 100 ppm were 3 s and 39 s, respectively. The high performance was attributed to the specific nanostructure feature of In2O3/Si-NPA sensor, large specific surface area and massive surface active sites. Moreover, the impressive features of In2O3/Si-NPA heterostructures have been discussed in detail from its geometrical and band structure. These results observed here indicate that the In2O3/Si-NPA sensor may be a promising sensing candidate for detecting low-concentration ethanol.

Highly sensitive sensor based on ordered porous ZnO nanosheets for ethanol detecting application

Abstract:<p>Ethanol sensors with high sensitivity are demanded for healthcare and environmental monitoring applications, especially in drunk driving detection. In this work, we present a high-performance gas sensor based on ordered porous ZnO (PZnO) nanosheets with a low cost. Gas sensing tests show that PZnO exhibits the highest ethanol sensing responsiveness at 307 °C to some toxic organic volatiles. The response of our PZnO based sensor is 212.0 toward 200 ppm ethanol vapor, the response and recovery time are only 8 s and 7 s, respectively. Compared with other ZnO based sensors shown in recent literatures, our PZnO based sensor exhibits faster response/recovery speed and higher sensitivity, which can be ascribed to the single-crystalline feature, more (002) facets exposure, ordered porous structure and a large amount of oxygen vacancy on the sensitive surface according to the sensing mechanism and density functional theory simulation study. The response also shows good linear relationship with the ethanol concentration in logarithm. Besides, the PZnO sensor is immune to high relative humidity. These characteristics enable PZnO based sensors for ethanol detecting applications.</p>
Ethanol sensing mechanism of ZnO nanorods revealed by DRIFT spectroscopy and DFT calculations

Abstract:Semiconductor gas sensors operate based on the changes in their resistivity in response to adsorption and reaction of gases on their surface, and understanding this mechanism is important in the design of sensitive and selective devices. In this study, the ethanol sensing mechanism of ZnO nanorods was investigated. Under hydrothermal conditions, the nanorods were grown vertically on an alumina substrate at random angles to expose the (10−10) plane of ZnO. The nanorods showed approximately twice the response to 12 ppm ethanol at 300 °C compared to commercial nanocrystals, which have the typical wurtzite structure of ZnO. This performance was attributed to the higher ethanol adsorption capacity of the nanorods and the reactivity of the (10−10) surface, which were confirmed from TPD analyses and control experiments with ZnO (10−10) single crystals, respectively. The reaction pathway for the conversion of ethanol was then determined using in situ DRIFT spectroscopy. Increasing the detection temperature resulted in the emergence of the peaks of acetate and the corresponding disappearance of those of ethoxide. Concurrent resistance measurements also showed a decrease in the sensor response with increasing temperature. Moreover, an analysis of the exhaust gas revealed that acetaldehyde was a major product at high temperatures. Therefore, the dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde and its oxidation to acetate are proposed to be key reactions in detection of ethanol using the ZnO nanorods. DFT calculations also revealed that the adsorption of acetaldehyde and acetate causes a decrease in the resistivity of ZnO, which is the basis for its gas sensing performance.

Abstract:The ethanol (C $_{\text{2}}$ H $_{\text{5}}$ OH) gas sensing characteristics of an interesting sensor have been studied and reported. The studied sensor is manufactured by the deposition of an Al-doped SnO $_{\text{2}}$ (ATO) thin film via sputtering, followed by the addition of evaporated gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on a sapphire (Al $_{\text{2}}$ O $_{\text{3}}$ ) substrate. The utilization of Au NPs is found to significantly enhance the sensor’s ethanol gas sensing capabilities, attributed to the augmented specific surface area and catalytic capability of the Au metal. In-depth characterization of the intrinsic material properties is achieved through compositional, morphological, and structural analyses. Experimentally, the proposed sensor demonstrates a higher sensing response of 1436, accompanied by a response time of 23 s and a recovery time of 17 s when exposed to 1000 ppm C $_{\text{2}}$ H $_{\text{5}}$ OH/air gas at 275 8.C. Notably, the sensor exhibits an exceptionally lower detectable content of 40 ppb C $_{\text{2}}$ H $_{\text{5}}$ OH/air. The research further delves into the replicable and long-term (90 days) sensing properties concerning ethanol gas. In addition, the proposed sensor has the advantages including a simplistic sensor structure, cost-effectiveness, and a relatively straightforward fabrication process.
