Abstract:Through literature review, questionnaires and interviews, this paper summarizes the present situation of English homework teachers leave in public junior high schools and how the students and parents evaluate in a Chinese inland city after the “double reduction” policy was issued in China, studies the design of English homework at junior high school level, analyzes the feedback of students, finds out that present after-class English assignment is featured by test orientation and lack of diverse, graded and interesting tasks and suggests some principles and effective designs for specific cases to make up for the deficiencies.

Abstract:The General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the General Office of the State Council have issued the Opinions on Further Reducing the Burden of Homework and Off-Campus Training for Students in Compulsory Education, proposing ways to comprehensively reduce the excessive academic burden on students and make homework assignments more scientific and reasonable. Since the promulgation and implementation of the Double Reduction policy, schools and educators have been exploring new modes of homework management, so it is urgent and necessary to conduct related research. This study proposes strategies for optimizing the after-school English homework in the upper elementary grades in multiple subjects from multiple perspectives. Schools should strengthen guidance management training and clarify teachers’ responsibilities; teachers should improve their homework management skills in three aspects: awareness, homework design forms, and homework evaluation; students should improve their homework self-management awareness and ability; and parents should do a good job at home of monitoring and motivating their children.

Abstract:Homework is an extended task assigned by teachers to consolidate classroom teaching, and practical homework refers to hands-on or practical inquiry homework, which is designed by teachers according to students' individual physical and mental differences and learning needs in order to achieve the goal of improving innovation and practical skills. In the current homework design model, traditional homework is relatively large and rigid, while practical homework is relatively scarce, difficult for teachers to design and implement, and not yet valued by students, which is not conducive to the cultivation of students' interaction and cooperation skills and the spirit of inquiry and innovation, and differs from the requirements of quality education. Based on the shortcomings of the design of elementary school language homework and the difficulty of designing and implementing practical homework, we propose the principles of diversity, openness and modernity in the design of elementary school language practical homework, and on the basis of these three principles, we further propose the optimization strategies for the design of practical homework, hoping to be helpful for the homework related to elementary school language under the requirements of quality education.

Abstract:Science homework is an important part of junior high school science teaching and learning, playing an important role in the whole subject curriculum teaching system. How to design homework scientifically, reasonably and effectively according to the teaching contents and learning conditions is the key exploration of junior high school science teaching under the background of “double reduction”. Based on the understanding of the core literacy of science and the analysis of the current status of science homework in junior high schools, we combined with the teaching practice of science homework design, and considered the improvement path for the design of junior high school science homework that points to the core literacy under the "double reduction" policy. Teachers can proceed with the following four aspects to improve the quality of homework design: designing conceptual homework from science concepts to consolidate basic knowledge; designing improving homework from science thinking to enhance the quality of assignments; designing practice-based homework from inquiry and practice to enrich the form of assignments; designing value-oriented homework from attitude and responsibility to bring out the value of educating people, so as to truly help students achieve "quality improvement, efficiency increase, and burden reduction" in learning, and cultivate students' core literacy.

Abstract:Homework is a crucial aspect of curriculum that reinforce and expand upon classroom teaching and guide teachers in improving their instruction. After many years of reform, China’s curriculum has entered the era of core competence which should be taken by homework as its ultimate goal. Traditional homework often focuses too much on repetition and quantity over quality, potentially reducing students’ enthusiasm for learning. With the “Double Reduction” policy, homework must now focus on educational value with reduced quantity and higher quality. In this study, the integrated unit design of English homework based on big idea is introduced to the English course of junior high school, trying to verify its effectiveness in helping achieve the core competence of English subject from the perspective of homework. The research involved eighth graders from a Chengdu middle school and used core competency tests from the Jinjiang District for pre- and post-experiment data. Interviews with students and teachers showed a positive reception to this new approach. Despite some limitations, the study suggests that homework based on big idea can effectively boost English core competencies in middle schoolers.

Abstract:The problem of improving the quality of homework, how to design, explore and study the whole teaching of English units in senior high schools, under the national "double reduction" policy has been continuously concerned and discussed based on the cultivation of core literacy in the English discipline, based on the analysis of the learning situation and teaching experience, the study proposes the principles of counting in the perspective of unit holistic teaching: wholeness, practicability and diversity. It is suggested to carry out homework practice based on the overall teaching of the unit by designing holistic homework, practical homework and diversified homework. Diversification of evaluation subjects, multidimensional evaluation objectives, diversification of evaluation forms, whole process of evaluation operation, and personalized evaluation feedback will be used to carry out the evaluation of assignments based on the unit teaching as a whole.

Abstract:Assigning homework to students during the teaching process by teachers is a consolidation and extension of the teaching content, and plays an important role in testing students' mastery of English knowledge. In traditional English homework assignments, teachers only consider the overall level of the class in terms of workload and difficulty, ignoring individual differences among students. Some students with weak foundations find it difficult to complete the homework, and the emphasis on rote memorization and transcription of words in the form of homework seriously affects students' interest in learning English. With the implementation of the "double reduction" policy, homework assignments should be effectively implemented in accordance with new requirements, and layered teaching should be implemented. Students' homework should be "tailored to their needs" to meet the requirements of the new curriculum implementation, so that students can truly reduce their workload and learn efficiently. Therefore, junior high school English teaching should adopt targeted homework assignments based on students' learning situations, break the shackles of traditional teaching concepts, innovate homework assignment forms, and meet students' personalized development needs.

Abstract:The "Double Reduction” policy was issued in July 2021, emphasizing the need to comprehensively shorten the total amount and duration of homework, and reducing students' excessive academic burden, so as to improve the quality of school education and teaching, and make homework assignments more scientific and reasonable. Homework after class is an important part of school education. Students' high-quality completion of homework is not only conducive to improving the efficiency of learning, but also conducive to reducing students' learning pressure and psychological burden. After class homework management is not only an important subject of school education and teaching, but also a key issue in the comprehensive reform of education. Over the years, students' heavy learning burden has become a hot issue of general concern in society. The state has also issued policies to reduce students' learning pressure and burden. Abstract:In 2021, Chinese authorities introduced a set of guidelines to ease the burden of excessive homework and off-campus tutoring for students undergoing compulsory education (the “Double Reduction” policy). As an effective extension of classroom teaching, homework can promote the development of students' personality and core literacy. Research on homework at home and abroad is mainly based on empirical studies, and under the policy of “Double reduction”, this article reviews domestic and foreign researches on English homework design in compulsory education, focusing on the design and correction of homework, homework teaching, homework reduction, and homework reform. And homework research tends to shift from intellectual education to moral education.

Abstract:After-class homework is a crucial component of the teaching and learning process, providing a necessary complement to classroom activities and reinforcing students' understanding. However, the traditional English homework model is often one-sided and can have negative effects on students' progress. As a result, China has implemented the "Double Reduction" policy to alleviate the excessive burden of homework and extracurricular training on students. [1] 145 students in Class 1 Grade 8, Class 2 Grade 8 and Class 3 Grade 8 of Yinyan Campus of Longyan Junior High School were regarded as the research subjects. The problems in the progress of English after-school homework optimal design for students in Grade 8 in this school were investigated and studied by means of questionnaires and interviews, and the causes of these problems were analyzed. By analyzing the data, there are six problems in the progress, such as lack of motivation in the study, inability of students, negative attitude toward English after-class homework, uneven abilities of students, simple forms and boring contents as well as overdue and simple feedbacks. To address these problems within the framework of the "Double Reduction" policy, seven measures were proposed in the paper, including increasing fun of homework, controlling of homework’s difficulty, targeted homework, the proper amount of homework, homework of social practice, homework of practice operation as well as timely and various feedbacks. The strategies not only require junior high school English teachers to effectively reduce students' academic pressure and promote students' happy growth but also require teachers to explore teaching methods that "reduce the burden and improve the efficiency" and "reduce the burden but not the quality".
