Abstract:We report a multifunctional metamaterial composite structure that not only provides the broadband radar and thermal infrared bi-stealth function but also possesses an in-band microwave transmission window and high optical transparency. It is composed of four metasurface layers made of indium tin oxide (ITO) films with different surface resistances, which are specifically designed to sequentially control the infrared emission, microwave absorption and transmission. The fabricated sample exhibits a low reflectivity less than 10% in 1.5-9 GHz and a transmission peak of 50% around 3.8 GHz up to the incident angle of 30 degrees. In the infrared atmosphere window, a low thermal emissivity of about 0.52 is achieved. Meanwhile, it keeps good optical transparency by the use of the ITO films. The optically transparent, low-infrared-emissivity, radar-reflectionlcss and frequency-selectivetransmission properties will enable the promising application of communication-compatible multispectral stealth technology. Hybrid Bilayer Plasmonic Metasurface Efficiently Manipulates Visible Light

Abstract:Metasurfaces operating in the cross-polarization scheme have shown an interesting degree of control over the wavefront of transmitted light. Nevertheless, their inherently low efficiency in visible light raises certain concerns for practical applications. Without sacrificing the ultrathin flat design, we propose a bilayer plasmonic metasurface operating at visible frequencies, obtained by coupling a nanoantenna-based metasurface with its complementary Babinet-inverted copy. By breaking the radiation symmetry because of the finite, yet small, thickness of the proposed structure and benefitting from properly tailored intra- and interlayer couplings, such coupled bilayer metasurface experimentally yields a conversion efficiency of 17%, significantly larger than that of earlier single-layer designs, as well as an extinction ratio larger than 0 dB, meaning that anomalous refraction dominates the transmission response. Our finding shows that metallic metasurface can counterintuitively manipulate the visible light as efficiently as dielectric metasurface (~20% in conversion efficiency in Lin et al.'s study), although the metal's ohmic loss is much higher than dielectrics. Our hybrid bilayer design, still being ultrathin (~λ/6), is found to obey generalized Snell's law even in the presence of strong couplings. It is capable of efficiently manipulating visible light over a broad bandwidth and can be realized with a facile one-step nanofabrication process.

Abstract:Abstract This article proposes a visible transparent infrared microwave-compatible stealth metasurface with low infrared emissivity, aiming to integrate visible transparency, low infrared radiation, and broadband microwave absorption. The entire structure consists of a dual layer of infrared shielding layer (IRSL) and microwave absorption layer (MAL). Among them, IRSL adopts a frequency selective surface (FSS) structure with high-duty cycle dielectric-metal-dielectric (DMD) to obtain low infrared emissivity and high microwave transmittance. MAL combines the equivalent circuit method (ECM) and particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) to design a circular ring metasurface for broadband microwave absorption. To achieve better absorption performance, a transition layer (TL) is introduced to improve impedance matching between IRSL and MAL. Meanwhile, the use of transparent materials throughout the entire structure has the characteristic of visible transparency. In summary, this article proposes a multiband compatible stealth metasurface design method that can meet the stealth requirements of modern battlefields.
A versatile metasurface for meta-nanoprinting and bifocal metalens

Abstract:As novel planar structures, the metasurfaces exhibit the unprecedented capability to manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of electromagnetic waves. Therefore, metasurface is designed to apply to metalens, holography, nanoprinting display, encryption, and so on. It is very interesting and meaningful work to integrate bifocal metalens and nanoprinting images into a single metasurface. A method is proposed to combine propagation phase and geometric phase, as well as Malus's law to realize the function of the bifocal metalens and clear nanoprinting display in the near field which can be observed at a certain polarization. This original design expands the functional integration of metasurface and improves applications in image displays, optical storage, augmented reality, virtual reality, and many other related fields.

Abstract:In this work, the authors proposed a thin artificial structure that could give rise to the strong reduction of both radar wave reflection and infrared thermal emission. This is realized by the subtle combination of two specifically designed metasurface layers that control the infrared emission and microwave absorption, respectively. Our measurement shows that the fabricated sample could have wideband absorption from 3–8 GHz with attenuation efficiency larger than 90% up to incident angles of 30°. In the infrared atmosphere window, it gives a very low emission value of about 0.2. These results show that our sample is practically very promising for the application of a radar-infrared bi-stealth technology.

Abstract:With the rapid development of detection technology, aircraft face growing threats from various detectors covering visible to infrared light. Therefore, aircraft must be equipped with the ability of compatible stealth. The emergency of the metasurface provides a promising method to realize this purpose. On this basis, in this work, a composite periodic metasurface is proposed by employing the type of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure for compatible infrared and laser stealth. In one unit cell, different dimensions of patterns are used to give rise to magnetic polaritons (MPs) at specific wavelengths. Through overall optimization of parameters of single periodic structures and the internal mechanisms in composite structures, appropriate parameters and arrangements are selected to obtain the required spectral features from laser to mid-infrared wavelengths. The simulated results demonstrate that the absorption at 1.06 μm can be over 70% and the absorption peaks in the region of 5∼8 μm are over 74%. High absorption at 1.06 μm is suitable for laser stealth, and the ability of high-performance infrared stealth comes with the advantages of low emissivity at the atmosphere windows and radiative cooling at the non-atmosphere window. This design is easy to fabricate and has a promising perspective for various compatible stealth and many other applications.

Abstract:A metasurface with compatible stealth and effective thermal management is proposed based on a machine‐learning‐enabled inverse design approach. Multiple parameters can be generated through the approach at multi‐wavebands. The finally generated metasurface exhibits low specular reflectance ( 1.8 μm). Metasurface‐based mid‐infrared stealth compatible with visual or laser provide a promising way to increase survivability of military installations. However, current designs of metasurfaces following traditional paradigm suffer from low efficiency on calculating global structural parameters for multispectral requirements and limited thermal radiation engineering. Here, a metasurface with high‐performance compatible stealth and effect thermal management is proposed, based on a machine‐learning‐enabled inverse design approach. The approach can rapidly generate multiple non‐unique solutions in global to match the desired spectra in multi‐wavebands, utilizing neural networks with physical‐based data dimensionality. The finally generated metasurface has low specular reflectance ( 50 °C). This study reveals an opportunity to inversely generate multiple solutions for photonic structures targeting on multispectral responses, in a systematic and efficient manner.

Abstract:With the rapid improvement of equipment integration technology, multi-spectrum detectors are integrated into compact volumes and widely used for object detection. Confront with this challenge, it is essential to propose a strategy to design a single-layer metasurface with multi-spectrum responses in microwave and infrared ranges. In this work, we proposed a method of designing meta-atoms, which is capable of achieving functional electromagnetic response at microwave and infrared individually. As a demonstration, a metasurface with four different occupation ratios and coding permutation features is designed, fabricated, and tested. In the microwave band, the pixel meta-atom is designed to realize highly efficient cross-polarization conversion between 5.0 and 10.0 GHz, which shows the metasurface can behave as ultra-low Radar Cross Section (RCS) reflectors in the working band; In the infrared band, different occupation ratio of meta-atoms are designed to realize the infrared emissivity from 0.60 to 0.80 in 3–14 μm, which can be used to exhibit digital infrared camouflage pattern. This work promotes the ability to use single-layer design to achieve digital infrared camouflage and microwave RCS reduction simultaneously. The one-layer design is simple in geometry, simplified in process, low cost in economy, and large scale in fabrication, which can promote practical use in compatible microwave stealth and infrared camouflage.

Abstract:A novel strategy is proposed to realize multispectral compatible camouflage by using multiscale‐hierarchical metasurfaces. This is the first report on the use of metasurfaces to achieve laser‐infrared‐microwave compatible camouflage. The presented approach not only breaks through the limitation of conventional compatible camouflage materials in performance but also opens an exciting route to achieving large‐area low‐cost fabrication of multispectral camouflage materials. Multispectral complementary detection technologies have made single‐band camouflage materials ineffective, creating strong demand for multispectral compatible camouflage materials. Here, multiscale‐hierarchical metasurfaces (MHM) compatible with large‐area low‐cost fabrication are proposed for the first time to realize multispectral camouflage of dual‐band lasers, infrared and microwave. The MHM consists of an all‐metallic metasurface array (AMMA) and a microwave absorber. The AMMA hinders dual‐band lasers and thermal infrared detection, while the microwave absorber beneath the AMMA is applied as a defence against microwave detection. As a proof‐of‐concept, a MHM sample with an area of 30 × 30 cm2 and a minimum linewidth of 1.8 μm is fabricated based on nanoimprint lithography. The excellent multispectral camouflage performance is verified in experiments, showing low reflectance (<0.2) in 0.9–1.2 μm and 9–12 μm, low infrared emissivity (<0.2), and high absorption efficiency of over 90% 2.7–26 GHz. Wide‐angle and polarization‐independent characteristics are also demonstrated. This work offers a promising opportunity for the engineering application of metasurfaces in the multispectral camouflage field. Moreover, this methodology can be easily extended to other electromagnetic spectrum, providing significant guidance for the design and fabrication of multispectral devices.

Intelligent Transmissive Microwave Metasurface with Optical Sensing and Transparency

Abstract:Transmissive metasurfaces are essentially conducive to stealth, absorbers, and communications. However, most of the current schemes only allow microwave to transmit and generally adopt multilayer structures or thick dielectric substrates to improve the electromagnetic performance, restricting optical transmission and conformal application. In addition, most metasurfaces still require metal wires and external power suppliers for programmability. Here, we propose and design an intelligent transmissive microwave metasurface with optical sensing and transparency, which provides both microwave and optical channels without redundant optical devices and power suppliers, and the 2 transmission channels are associated with each other. The metasurface is realized by validly integrating photosensitive materials into microwave meta-structures. As a demonstration, we fabricate an ultrathin optically transparent transmissive metasurface based on polyethylene terephthalate substrate and photoresistors, whose thickness is only 0.125 mm. We further construct cross-wavelength transmission links based on the metasurface sample and experimentally validate that the microwave transmissions vary with light intensities under full-polarization and large-angle incidences, and this metasurface possesses high optical transparency. The intelligent transmissive microwave metasurface with optical sensing and transparency has potential applications in optical-microwave hybrid transmission devices and stealth technology.
Deep Learning Assisted Optimization of Metasurface for Multi-Band Compatible Infrared Stealth and Radiative Thermal Management

Abstract:Infrared (IR) stealth plays a vital role in the modern military field. With the continuous development of detection technology, multi-band (such as near-IR laser and middle-IR) compatible IR stealth is required. Combining rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) with Deep Learning (DL), we design a Ge/Ag/Ge multilayer circular-hole metasurface capable of multi-band IR stealth. It achieves low average emissivity of 0.12 and 0.17 in the two atmospheric windows (3~5 μm and 8~14 μm), while it achieves a relatively high average emissivity of 0.61 between the two atmospheric windows (5~8 μm) for the purpose of radiative thermal management. Additionally, the metasurface has a narrow-band high absorptivity of 0.88 at the near-infrared wavelength (1.54 μm) for laser guidance. For the optimized structure, we also analyze the potential physical mechanisms. The structure we optimized is geometrically simple, which may find practical applications aided with advanced nano-fabrication techniques. Also, our work is instructive for the implementation of DL in the design and optimization of multifunctional IR stealth materials.

Broadband achromatic transmission stealth cloak based on all dielectric metasurfaces

Abstract:The emergence of metasurface technology has brought innovation to the design of optical devices, and many optical devices based on metasurface have been proposed. However, the inherent dispersion of metasurface structures limits their ability to operate at wide frequencies. By changing the geometric parameters of the metasurface unit structure, the unit structure has achromatic properties on the basis of satisfying the phase gradient. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed multilayer transmissive metasurface stealth cloak has broadband stealth function in the frequency range of 0.7 to 0.77 THz. Achromatic broadband metasurface stealth devices provide new ideas for the design of broadband metasurface stealth devices, and also promote the research of other broadband metasurface optical devices.

Abstract:Abstract A visible-light-transparent metasurface has been designed to achieve infrared (IR)–radar stealth. An optically transparent material, indium tin oxide was chosen in preference to other low-IR-emissivity metals to achieve camouflage compatibility for the IR–radar stealth material. In addition, flexible polyethylene terephthalate was adopted as the dielectric material to in order to benefit from its visible light transparency; its softness could also improve its application prospects. The fabricated structure exhibited a strong absorptivity of over 90% from 8.265 GHz to 17.65 GHz and a low IR emissivity of less than 0.3 in the region of 3–14 μ m. The results demonstrated that the metasurface was polarization independent and it was still able to maintain 90% of its absorptivity with an oblique incidence of 20°. The good consistency between the experimental and simulated results verified that the proposed metasurface can be practically applied in multifunctional stealth technology.

Abstract:Due to the completely opposite stealth mechanisms of radar and infrared waves, and the limitation of the Planck–Rozanov limit, compatible stealth of S-band radar and infrared is extremely difficult to realize at thin thicknesses. In order to solve the problem, a layered metamaterial consisting of infrared stealth layer (IRSL) with aluminum foil and radar stealth layer (RASL) with carbonyl iron powder is designed. The excellent infrared stealth performance (infrared emissivity< 0.3) is achieved because of the low infrared emissivity aluminum foil and reasonable area design. Meanwhile, the Sierpinski triangular fractal structure of IRSL not only serves to reduce the reflection of radar waves, but also introduces the electromagnetic double resonance mechanism of one-dimensional electric resonance and two-dimensional magnetic resonance to lose waves. Therefore, the effective absorption (RL < −10 dB) of 2.12–3.5 GHz in S-band is achieved with a thickness of only 2.24 mm. The double-layer model with fractal structure in this work realizes the perfect compatible stealth for S-band radar and infrared at extremely thin thickness, which provides a new design idea for the development of multi-band compatible stealth.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have shown promising applications in radar-infrared compatible stealth because of its superior electromagnetic wave control capabilities, but, to date, the majority of designs still suffer from the defects of large thickness, limited working bandwidth, relatively high infrared emissivity and so on. Here, an exotic phase gradient metasurface (PGM) is proposed to achieve low microwave reflection and low infrared emission concurrently, which has a small thickness of about 0.10λ0. The microwave reflection reduction larger than 10 dB in 14-20 GHz is attributed to the anomalous reflection for arbitrary LP incident waves, and the infrared emissivity less than 0.28 from 3 to 14 µm is due to the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) with low infrared emissivity and high filling ratio. Also, the designed PGM can also realize beam deflection for orthogonal CP waves because of the meta-atoms' isotropic characteristics. Our methodology is fully verified by numerous simulations and experiments and may open a new avenue for radar-infrared compatible stealth research.
Tunable Infrared Detection, Radiative Cooling and Infrared-Laser Compatible Camouflage Based on a Multifunctional Nanostructure with Phase-Change Material

Abstract:The nanostructure composed of nanomaterials and subwavelength units offers flexible design freedom and outstanding advantages over conventional devices. In this paper, a multifunctional nanostructure with phase-change material (PCM) is proposed to achieve tunable infrared detection, radiation cooling and infrared (IR)-laser compatible camouflage. The structure is very simple and is modified from the classic metal–dielectric–metal (MIM) multilayer film structure. We innovatively composed the top layer of metals with slits, and introduced a non-volatile PCM Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) for selective absorption/radiation regulation. According to the simulation results, wide-angle and polarization-insensitive dual-band infrared detection is realized in the four-layer structure. The transformation from infrared detection to infrared stealth is realized in the five-layer structure, and laser stealth is realized in the atmospheric window by electromagnetic absorption. Moreover, better radiation cooling is realized in the non-atmospheric window. The proposed device can achieve more than a 50% laser absorption rate at 10.6 μm while ensuring an average infrared emissivity below 20%. Compared with previous works, our proposed multifunctional nanostructures can realize multiple applications with a compact structure only by changing the temperature. Such ultra-thin, integratable and multifunctional nanostructures have great application prospects extending to various fields such as electromagnetic shielding, optical communication and sensing.
