Abstract:The properties of multi-jet events impact many LHC analysis. The exclusive number of jets at hadron colliders can be described in terms of two simple patterns: staircase scaling and Poisson scaling. In photon plus jets production we can interpolate between the two patterns using simple kinematic cuts. The associated theoretical errors are well under control. Understanding such exclusive jet multiplicities significantly impacts Higgs searches and searches for supersymmetry at the LHC.

Abstract:Recent results in high-multiplicity pp collisions show features similar to those that are associated with the formation of a quark$-$gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions. Investigating the modification of the intra-jet properties as a function of event multiplicity in pp collisions can provide deeper insight into the nature of these effects. We will present the recent measurements of multiplicity dependence of charged-particle jet properties (average charged particle multiplicity and fragmentation functions) for leading charged-particle jets. Jets are reconstructed using anti-$k_{\rm T}$ jet finding algorithm with radius parameter $R$ = 0.4 in the jet $p_{\rm T}$ range from 5$-$110 GeV/$c$ at midrapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with ALICE.

Abstract:Recent ideas in the geometrical model of multiparticle production in hadron-hadron collisions are applied to two-jet events in ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilation. A coherent picture emerges which is compared with experimental data. A number of predictions are made, including the prediction that Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling does not obtain for such events. The relationship with QCD models remains unexplored.

Abstract:Long- and short-range correlations for pairs of charged particles are studied via two-particle angular correlations in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and p$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. The correlation functions are measured as a function of relative azimuthal angle $\Delta\varphi$ and pseudorapidity separation $\Delta\eta$ for pairs of primary charged particles within the pseudorapidity interval $|\eta| < 0.9$ and the transverse-momentum interval $1 < p_{\rm T} < 4$ GeV/$c$. Flow coefficients are extracted for the long-range correlations ($1.6 < |\Delta\eta| <1.8$) in various high-multiplicity event classes using the low-multiplicity template fit method. The method is used to subtract the enhanced yield of away-side jet fragments in high-multiplicity events. These results show decreasing flow signals toward lower multiplicity events. Furthermore, the flow coefficients for events with hard probes, such as jets or leading particles, do not exhibit any significant changes compared to those obtained from high-multiplicity events without any specific event selection criteria. The results are compared with hydrodynamic-model calculations, and it is found that a better understanding of the initial conditions is necessary to describe the results, particularly for low-multiplicity events.

Abstract:We estimate the number of quark jets in QCD multi-jet final states at hadron colliders. In the estimation, we develop the calculation of jet rates into that of quark jet rates. From the calculation, we estimate the improvement on the signal-to-background ratio for a signal semi-analytically by applying quark/gluon discrimination, where the signal predicts many quark jets. We introduce a variable related to jet flavors in multi-jet final states and propose a data-driven method using the variable to reduce systematic uncertainties of analysis results. As the same with the semi-analytical result, the improvements on the signal-to-background ratio using the variable in Monte-Carlo analysis are estimated.

Abstract:The motivation behind exploring jet quenching-like phenomena in small systems arises from the experimental observation of heavy-ion-like behavior of particle production in high-multiplicity proton-proton ($p+p$) collisions. Quantifying the jet quenching in $p+p$ collisions is a challenging task, as the magnitude of the nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$ or $R_{\rm CP}$), which is used to quantify jet quenching, is influenced by several factors, such as the estimation of centrality and the scaling factor. The most common method of centrality estimation employed by the ALICE collaboration is based on measuring charged-particle multiplicity with the V0 detector situated at the forward rapidity. This technique of centrality estimation makes the event sample biased towards hard processes like multijet final states. This bias of the V0 detector towards hard processes makes it difficult to study the jet quenching effect in high-multiplicity $p+p$ collisions. In the present article, we propose to explore the use of a new and robust event classifier, flattenicity which is sensitive to both the multiple soft partonic interactions and hard processes. The $\mathcal{P}_{\rm CP}$, a quantity analogous to $R_{\rm CP}$, has been estimated for high-multiplicity $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV using \texttt{PYTHIA8} model for both the V0M (the multiplicity classes selected based on V0 detector acceptance) as well as flattenicity. The evolution of $\mathcal{P}_{\rm CP}$ with $p_{\rm T}$ shows a heavy-ion-like effect for flattencity which is attributed to the selection of softer transverse momentum particles in high-multiplicity $p+p$ collisions.

Abstract:We review various aspects of jet physics in the context of hadron colliders. We start by discussing the definitions and properties of jets and recent development in this area. We then consider the question of factorization for processes with jets, in particular for cases in which jets are produced in special configurations, like for example in the region of forward rapidities. We review numerous perturbative methods for calculating predictions for jet processes, including the fixed-order calculations as well as various matching and merging techniques. We also discuss the questions related to non-perturbative effects and the role they play in precision jet studies. We describe the status of calculations for processes with jet vetoes and we also elaborate on production of jets in forward direction. Throughout the article, we present selected comparisons between state-of-the-art theoretical predictions and the data from the LHC.

N-Jettiness: An Inclusive Event Shape to Veto Jets

Abstract:Jet vetoes are essential in many Higgs and new-physics analyses at the LHC and Tevatron. The signals are typically characterized by a specific number of hard jets, leptons, or photons, while the backgrounds often have additional jets. In such cases vetoing undesired additional jets is an effective way to discriminate signals and background. Given an inclusive event sample with N or more jets, the veto to have only N energetic jets defines an "exclusive" N-jet cross section. This strongly restricts the phase space of the underlying inclusive N-jet cross section and causes large double logarithms in perturbation theory that must be summed to obtain theory predictions. Jet vetoes are typically implemented using jet algorithms. This yields complicated phase-space restrictions and one often relies on parton-shower Monte Carlos, which are limited to leading-logarithmic accuracy. We introduce a global event shape "N-jettiness", tau_N, which is defined for events with N signal jets and vanishes in the limit of exactly N infinitely narrow jets. Requiring tau_N << 1 constrains radiation between the N signal jets and vetoes additional undesired jets. This provides an inclusive method to veto jets and to define an exclusive N-jet cross section that can be well-controlled theoretically. N-jettiness yields a factorization formula with inclusive jet and beam functions.

Multijet event shape variables for Mueller Navelet jet topologies

Abstract:This paper presents a new set of multijet event shape variables introduced to further understand the Mueller-Navelet jet topology. This topology consists of having at least one pair of jets with a very large rapidity separation between them, treating additional jet activity inclusively. This multijet topology is expected to shed light on the radiation pattern that is expected in the high-energy limit of the strong interaction. The paper relies on a Monte Carlo event generator analysis. One set of predictions uses the BFKLex event generator, which is based on Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) evolution with a resummation of large logarithms of energy at leading-logarithmic accuracy. The BFKLex predictions are compared with a fixed-order next-to-leading order pQCD calculation using POWHEG matched to the parton shower of PYTHIA8 (NLO+PS), which is the standard for NLO generator predictions at the LHC. We find that both approaches lead to compatible results at current LHC energies, assuming the current experimental constraints for the reconstruction of low transverse momentum jets in ATLAS and CMS. This shows the reliability of the BFKL approach at describing the behavior of the strong interaction in the preasymptotic limit of high center-of-mass energies. Differences between the NLO+PS and the BFKL-based approaches are found when the jet multiplicity is increased or when the minimum transverse momentum of the jets is decreased.

Abstract:The separate study of quark and gluon jets is vital for the interpretation of multiple variables behaviour observed in both high-energy hadron and heavy-ion collisions in the present and future experiments. We propose a set of jet-energy dependent cuts to be used to distinguish between quark and gluon jets experimentally based on a Monte-Carlo study of their properties. Further, we introduce the possibility to calibrate these cuts via gamma-jet and multi-jet events, which represent clean production channels for quark and gluon jets, respectively. The calibration can happen on real data and thus, reduces the dependence of the method performance on Monte-Carlo model predictions.

Multiplicity dependence of charged-particle intra-jet properties in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Abstract:The first measurement of the multiplicity dependence of intra-jet properties of leading charged-particle jets in proton-proton (pp) collisions is reported. The mean charged-particle multiplicity and jet fragmentation distributions are measured in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles produced in the midrapidity region ($|\eta| < 0.9$) using the sequential recombination anti-$k_{\rm T}$ algorithm with jet resolution parameters $R$ = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 for the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) interval 5$-$110 GeV/$c$. High-multiplicity events are selected by the forward V0 scintillator detectors. The mean charged-particle multiplicity inside the leading jet cone rises monotonically with increasing jet $p_{\rm T}$ in qualitative agreement with previous measurements at lower energies. The distributions of jet fragmentation functions $z^{\rm ch}$ and $\xi^{\rm ch}$ are measured for different jet-$p_{\rm T}$ intervals. Jet-$p_{\rm T}$ independent fragmentation of leading jets is observed for wider jets except at high- and low-$z^{\rm ch}$. The observed "hump-backed plateau" structure in the $\xi^{\rm ch}$ distribution indicates suppression of low-$p_{\rm T}$ particles. In high-multiplicity events, an enhancement of the fragmentation probability of low-$z^{\rm ch}$ particles accompanied by a suppression of high-$z^{\rm ch}$ particles is observed compared to minimum-bias events. This behavior becomes more prominent for low-$p_{\rm T}$ jets with larger jet radius. The results are compared with predictions of QCD-inspired event generators, PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC. It is found that PYTHIA 8 qualitatively reproduces the jet modification in high-multiplicity events except at high jet $p_{\rm T}$. These measurements provide important constraints to models of jet fragmentation.

Abstract:We perform the first systematic study of the effects of multi-parton interactions (MPI's) in the context of jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions with the jet quenching model JEWEL. We use the simple MPI model of PYTHIA 6, on which JEWEL is based. We find negligible effects on all observables except jet-hadron and Z-hadron correlations, which show a moderate enhancement at large distances. More detailed analysis at parton level reveals that, in heavy-ion collisions, the MPI contribution to jets is suppressed by quenching effects.

Abstract:We study single jet production in electron-nucleus collisions e(-) + N-A -> J + X, using the 1-jettiness (tau(1)) global event shape. It inclusively quantifies the pattern of radiation in the final state, gives enhanced sensitivity to soft radiation at wide angles from the nuclear beam and final-state jet, and facilitates the resummation of large Sudakov logarithms associated with the veto on additional jets. Through their effect on the observed pattern of radiation, 1-jettiness can be a useful probe of nuclear parton distribution functions and power corrections from dynamical effects in the nuclear medium. This formalism allows for the standard jet shape analysis while simultaneously providing sensitivity to soft radiation at wide angles from the jet. We use a factorization framework for cross-sections differential in tau(1) and the transverse momentum (P-JT) and rapidity (y) of the jet, in the region tau(1) << P-JT. The restriction tau(1) << P-JT allows only soft radiation between the nuclear beam and jet directions, thereby acting as a veto on additional jets. This region is also insensitive to the details of the jet algorithm, allowing for better theoretical control over resummation, while providing enhanced sensitivity to nuclear medium effects. We give numerical results at leading twist, with resummation at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic level of accuracy, for a variety of nuclear targets. Such studies would be ideal for the electron-ion collider and the LHeC proposals for a future electron-ion collider, where a range of nuclear targets are planned.

Abstract:We review the current status of analyses of multijet final states in e+e- annihilation. Results for jet observables from LEP 1, LEP 2 and from the reanalysis of the PETRA experiment JADE will be presented. A determination of the b-quark mass using jet observables will be discussed and tests of power correction models will be shown. Finally determinations of the QCD colour factors from an analysis of event shape distributions at several energy points using power corrections will be discussed.

Abstract:Recent measurements on heavy-flavour production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity at the LHC are discussed. Focus is given to quarkonium results in small (pp or pPb) collision systems. The measurements of relative yields, i.e., the ratio of the particle yields in given multiplicity intervals to the multiplicity integrated yield are presented and compared to model calculations from Monte Carlo event generators as well as to models considering effects at play in the initial and/or final state of the collision. The absolute inclusive J/ψ yield as a function of the absolute charged-particle multiplicity is evaluated; a smooth behaviour of the absolute yield is observed across collision systems, from pp to pPb and PbPb collisions. Analogous measurements of the excited-to-ground state quarkonium ratios as a function of charged-particle multiplicity are also reviewed. Finally, the study of exotic particle production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity is introduced as a complementary tool to investigate the nature of the χc1(3872) hadron.

Abstract:Event-by-event (ebe) multiplicity \fll and \cor amongst the charged particles emitted in the forward-backward symmetric pseudorapidity (\et) windows of varying widths and positions are investigated by analyzing the experimental data on $^{197}$Au-AgBr collisions at 11.6A GeV/c. The findings are compared with the predictions of relativistic transport model, \urq and independent particle emission (or mixed event) model. It is observed that the \fll in ebe mean pseudorapidity values and those reflected from the \fll strength measure, $\Phi$ are relatively higher as compared to those expected from the statistically independent particle emission model. The study of the variance, $\sigma_c^2$ of a suitably defined forward-backward asymmetry variable $C$ as a function of \et window width and position indicates the presence of strong short-range correlations, which might arise due to isotropic decay of cluster-like objects either in forward or backward \et region. Furthermore, analyses of events having \ring and \jet substructures, carried out separately, suggest that the major contribution to the observed \fll in the data sample are due to ring-like events, while the contributions from the \jet events appear to be rather small. The observed difference in the behavior of correlation strengths from the two types of events might be due to the enhanced emission of Cherenkov gluons, giving rise to the \ring substructure. The mixed event analysis further confirms that the observed \fll are the distinct feature of the data, which disappear after event mixing.

Abstract:I examine the phenomenology of particle multiplicity distributions, with special emphasis on the low multiplicities that are a background in the study of rapidity gaps. In particular, I analyze the multiplicity distribution in a rapidity interval between two jets, using the HERWIG QCD simulation with some necessary modifications. The distribution is not of the negative binomial form, and displays an anomalous enhancement at zero multiplicity. Some useful mathematical tools for working with multiplicity distributions are presented. It is demonstrated that ignoring particles with pt<0.2 has theoretical advantages, in addition to being convenient experimentally.

Abstract:The properties of two-, three-, four-, five-, and six-jet events with multijet masses $>600$ GeV ${/c}^{2}$ are compared with QCD predictions. The shapes of the multijet-mass and leading-jet-angular distributions are approximately independent of jet multiplicity and are well described by the NJETS matrix element calculation and the HERWIG parton shower Monte Carlo predictions. The observed jet transverse momentum distributions for three- and four-jet events discriminate between the matrix element and parton shower predictions, the data favoring the matrix element calculation.

Abstract:Charged track multiplicity is among the most powerful observables for discriminating quark- from gluon-initiated jets. Despite its utility, it is not infrared and collinear (IRC) safe, so perturbative calculations are limited to studying the energy evolution of multiplicity moments. While IRC-safe observables, like jet mass, are perturbatively calculable, their distributions often exhibit Casimir scaling, such that their quark/gluon discrimination power is limited by the ratio of quark to gluon color factors. In this paper, we introduce new IRC-safe counting observables whose discrimination performance exceeds that of jet mass and approaches that of track multiplicity. The key observation is that track multiplicity is approximately Poisson distributed, with more suppressed tails than the Sudakov peak structure from jet mass. By using an iterated version of the soft drop jet grooming algorithm, we can define a "soft drop multiplicity" which is Poisson distributed at leading-logarithmic accuracy. In addition, we calculate the next-to-leading-logarithmic corrections to this Poisson structure. If we allow the soft drop groomer to proceed to the end of the jet branching history, we can define a collinear-unsafe (but still infrared-safe) counting observable. Exploiting the universality of the collinear limit, we define generalized fragmentation functions to study the perturbative energy evolution of collinear-unsafe multiplicity.
