Abstract:The influence of annealing on microstructure, magnetic properties including the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect of a Fe-based nanocomposite has been investigated. The nanocomposite structure composed of ultra-fine Fe(Si) grains embedded in an amorphous matrix was attained by annealing the Fe-based amorphous alloy prepared by rapid quenching method. The GMI profiles were measured for samples annealed at different temperatures ranging from 350 to 650°C in vacuum and for 30min. It is found that the mean grain size of the α-Fe(Si) crystallites in the order of 12nm remains almost unchanged until the annealing temperature reached 540°C. A decrease of anisotropy field and an increase of GMI with increasing annealing temperature up to 540°C were observed and ascribed to the increase of the magnetic permeability and the decrease of the coercivity, whereas the opposite tendency was found for the sample annealed above 600°C which is likely due to the microstructural change caused by high-temperature annealing. This indicates that variation in the magnetic characteristic of the amorphous phase upon annealing changed the intergrain exchange coupling. This altered both the magnetic softness and the effective anisotropy and consequently modified the GMI features. The study of the temperature dependence of the GMI effect provides further understanding of the magnetic exchange between these crystallized grains through the amorphous boundaries in Fe-based nanocrystalline materials.

Abstract:The effect of annealing treatment on permeability and magneto-impedance in Fe73Cu1Nb3.5Si14B8.5 amorphous ribbons was investigated systematically. The magneto-impedance profiles were measured as a function of the external magnetic field at various frequencies up to 10MHz. The real and imaginary parts of the complex permeability were measured in a frequency range of 0.1–10MHz under different applied ac field. The results indicated that the longitudinal permeability resulting from domain wall motion decreased drastically after annealing treatment, but the permeability resulting from the rotational magnetization increased with increasing annealing temperature up to 540°C and then decreased at higher temperatures. The largest magneto-impedance effect was observed in the nanocrystalline alloy. The correlation between the soft magnetic properties and the magnitude and sensitivity of the GMI effect was discussed.

Abstract:The high temperature soft magnetic properties of Fe85.2Zr3.5Nb3.5B6.8Cu1 amorphous and nanocrystalline alloy were investigated. A Hopkinson peak was observed in the amorphous alloy, which was not observed in the nanocrystalline alloy, and this has been explained by the combination of the anisotropy reduction and the deterioration of magnetic properties. A rapidly decrease in permeability at the Curie temperature of amorphous (Tcam) was observed in amorphous and partial crystallized nanocrystalline alloys, this phenomenon was disappeared in the highly crystallized nanocrystalline alloys, which was illustrated by the intergrain exchange magnetic coupling through a thin amorphous layer in the two-phase nanocrystalline alloy.

Abstract:The best linear fit of H-c(T)/M-s(T) vs 2k(1)(T)/mu(0)M s(2)(T) vs infers that H-c is determined by a nucleation process in nanocrystalline two-phase magnet. The condition of the grain shapes is improved after adding Hf and Ga, but the surfaces are deteriorated by some precipitates on the boundary. Taking into account the values of alpha, N-eff, the results of TEM, and Moessbauer spectroscopy, the magnetic field heat-treatment not only induces grain refinement but also causes a uniform distribution of the soft and hard phases. It is one recommendable method to improve the condition of the microstructure. Both the remanence and energy product values are increased by 20 %-30 % for all ribbons after annealing with magnetic field. The magnetic interaction in Nd2Fe14B/Fe3B + alpha Fe based nanocrystalline two-phase magnets is studied using delta M plots in this paper. It is found that the exchange coupled interaction is greatly enhanced in the sample annealed with magnetic heat-treatment, specially, Nd4Fe76Co3Hf0.5Ga0.5B16 which achieves the highest energy product (BH)(max) = 126. 4 kJ/m(3).

Abstract:Cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanowire arrays with different diameters were prepared in porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template by a sol-gel template method. A magnetic field annealing procedure was performed in the direction along wire axis (out of sample planes) at 600 degrees C under 10-T applied magnetic field to orient the spinel CoFe2O4 crystalline. The morphology was studied by scanning electron and transmission electron microscope. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that samples performed by the magnetic field annealing procedure have a texture along the nanowire axis, while those annealed without applied magnetic field show a nonoriented polycrystalline phase of spinel type structure. Vibration sample magnetometer (VSM) test shows the difference between CoFe2O4 nanowire arrays samples annealed with or without applied magnetic field. This difference shows the magneto-crystalline anisotropy with the easy magnetization direction along the nanowire axis, and is caused by the resultant effect of the easy magnetization direction distribution of the crystalline.

Abstract:This work presents a new strategy to synthesize FePt nanoparticles with tuning shapes. A high magnetic field up to 6 T was introduced to synthesize FePt nanoparticles with different capping agent system during a wet-chemical process. Our study shows that the high magnetic fields of 6 T, could transform the shape of FePt nanoparticles from concave-nanocube to nanocube, nanocube to truncated-nanocube and truncated-nanocube to nanorod. The growth mechanism of nanoparticles under high magnetic field has been discussed in this work. The high magnetic field facilitates the FePt nanoparticles growth along the easy magnetization < 100 > direction, tuning the shape of FePt nanoparticles from concave-nanocube to nanocube and nanocube to truncated-nanocube by controlling the growth rates between < 100 > and < 111 >. Otherwise, the easy magnetization axis of FePt nanoparticles synthesized under high magnetic field would rotate to parallel with the field direction. When the FePt nanoparticle separation is very close to the critical distance due to the less amounts of surfactant and solvent, the high magnetic field induces magnetic dipole-dipole interaction promoting the orientation-attachment growth of FePt nanoparticles. In this case, the FePt nanorod was formed. This research indicated that the application of high magnetic field was an effective strategy to tune the shape of FePt nanoparticles in wet-chemical method.

Abstract:Developing a novel strategy for promoting the disorder–order transition of FePt nanoparticles (NPs) is helpful to improve magnetic and electrocatalytic properties of the FePt NPs. In this research, high magnetic field (HMF) was introduced to wet-chemical synthesis of the L10-FePt NPs. The effects of HMF on the growth and magnetic property of wet-chemical synthesized L10-FePtCu NPs were studied. Cu atoms preferred to occupy the Fe-site in L10-FePt lattice at 6 T HMF, which facilitated this disorder–order transition and increased the ordering degree of L10-FePtCu NPs. When the magnetic dipolar interaction energy was much higher than the thermal energy, the HMF also enhanced the orientation attachment of L10-FePtCu NPs along 〈0 0 1〉 direction, which would lead to the increasing of growing rate and the aligning of NPs. The HMF increased the coercivity of L10-FePtCu NPs by increasing the grain size and the ordering degree. This work provides a promising method for controlling the disorder–order transition, the attachment growth, and the magnetic property of wet-chemical synthesized NPs.

Abstract:The present work investigated the effects of magnetic field annealing on the magnetic properties, mechanical properties and microstructure of the Fe80Si9B11 amorphous alloys. The results show that the soft magnetic properties (SMPs) were obviously improved after the samples were annealed below the crystallization temperature with a 1 T magnetic field. The atom probe tomography (APT) results showed that the magnetic field has little effect on the element distribution of the annealed samples at 653 K. The results of XRD and TEM showed that the 653 K x 0 T sample included a few nanocrystals and an amorphous matrix while the 653 K x 1 T sample still retained an amorphous structure. It is worth noting that a large number of spherical symmetry clusters and a small number of translational symmetry clusters can be observed in the 653 K x 1 T sample. Many translational symmetry clusters, and a few spherical symmetry clusters, can be identified in the 693 K x 1 T sample. Both good soft magnetic properties (SMPs) and acceptable mechanical properties were obtained after the sample was annealed at 653 K. Compared with that of the as-cast sample, the values of maximum magnetic flux intensity (B-m), elastic modulus (E-r) and hardness increased by 13.7%, 36.6% and 9.4%, respectively, while the values of coercivity (H-c) and hysteresis loss (P-u) decreased by 71.5% and 68.2%, respectively. After the sample was annealed at 693 K, the SMPs exhibited a deterioration, and Er and hardness also dropped sharply. Based on the above results, the mechanism of the microstructural change for Fe80Si9B11 amorphous alloys related to the magnetic field annealing conditions was proposed. The relationship between the soft magnetic properties, mechanical properties, and the microstructure of the sample was also discussed. This paper provides a basis for the further improvement the SMPs of the Fe80Si9B11 amorphous ribbons by controlling the microstructure.

Abstract:A high magnetic field (up to 12T) has been used to anneal 2.6-µm-thick Co50Ni40P10 films formed by pulse electrodeposition. The effects of high magnetic field annealing on the microstructure and magnetic properties of CoNiP thin films have been investigated. It was found that a high magnetic field accelerated a phase transformation from fcc to hcp and enhanced the preferred hcp-(002) orientation during annealing. Compared with the films annealed without a magnetic field, annealing at 12T decreased the surface particle size, roughness, and coercivity, but increased the saturation magnetization and remanent magnetization of CoNiP films. The out-of-plane coercivity was higher than that the in-plane for the as-deposited films. After annealing without a magnetic field, the out-of-plane coercivity was equal to that of the in-plane. However, the out-of-plane coercivity was higher than that of the in-plane when annealing at 12T. These results indicate that high magnetic field annealing is an effective method for tuning the microstructure and magnetic properties of thin films.
Effect of longitudinal magnetic field annealing process on the properties and structures of soft magnetic Fe73.7Si15.3Cu1Nb3B7 nanocrystalline alloys

Abstract:Fe 73.7 Si 15.3 Cu 1 Nb 3 B 7 nanocrystalline alloy was subjected to longitudinal magnetic field (LMF) annealing treatment, and the influence of different magnetic field strengths (MFS) on the magnetic properties and microstructure of the nanocrystalline soft magnetic alloy was investigated. The results showed that the H c and P v of nanocrystalline magnetic rings tended to increase and then decrease with increasing MFS, on top of that reached the minimum value at the MFS of 0.59 mT, which was 0.51 A/m and 89.86 W/kg (test conditions: B m = 0.4 T, f = 50 kHz), respectively. The μ e is the highest value in the same test frequency range of 10–1000 kHz. Besides, the rectangular ratios of the magnetic rings were all above 0.95 when the applied MFS was higher than 0.24 mT. The formation of lamellar domains inside the alloy after LMF annealing was observed by the magneto-optical Kerr effect, with the MFS increasing, the direction of the domains gradually parallel to the strip direction, and the width of the domain walls increasing all the time. The optimum soft magnetic performance of the strip was achieved when the angle between the magnetic domains and the easy magnetization direction was 21.9°.

Abstract:In this work, the effect of the annealing process (heating rate (HR) and holding time (HT)) on microstructure and magnetic properties of FeSiBPCNbCu nanocrystalline soft magnetic powder cores (NPCs) are systematically studied. NPCs annealed under the HR of 100 K/min and HT of 30 min exhibit a finely uniform nanocrystalline structure with a concentrated grain size distribution and a small average grain size of 18.71 nm and show a modified magnetic domain structure where the domain walls move easily with the changes in the external magnetic field. The optimized microstructure leads to outstanding soft magnetic properties, including the low coercivity of 10.5 A/m (50 mT, 500 kHz), low core loss of 751 mW/cm3 (50 mT, 500 kHz), and highly effective permeability of 64.7 (100 kHz). We believe that the annealing process regulation can contribute to the industrial production of high-performance NPCs, which can meet the performance requirements of high-end electronic components such as molding chokes used in power supplies, mobile phones, and other terminal equipment.

Abstract:Flaky Fe-Si-Al magnetic fine powders were synthesized by annealing as well as mechanical ball-milling with the gas-atomized Fe-Si-Al(Fe5.5Si9.5Al) alloy powder as raw material.The effects of annealing on the microwave electromagnetic properties of the Fe-Si-Al magnetic powders were investigated.The results show that: Fe-Si-Al magnetic powders with superior magnetic properties and regular flake shape can be obtained by mechanically ball-milling the raw material.Mechanical ball-milling significantly increases the permeability of Fe-Si-Al powder in the low frequency microwave band,while annealing further adjusts the permeability of the powder.Moreover,the permeability of Fe-Si-Al powder can be further enhanced by annealing the raw material.The real part(μ′) and imaginary part(μ″) of the permeability of the prepared flaky Fe-Si-Al magnetic powders reach 5.09 and 3.65,respectively.

Abstract:The effect of magnetic field annealing on crystallization and high-frequency/temperature soft magnetic properties is investigated for (Fe0.5Co0.5)73.5Cu1Nb3Si13.5B9 alloy. The applied magnetic field in the annealing process effectively facilitates the precipitation of ferromagnetic α-FeCo(Si) grains from the amorphous precursor and softens the magnetic properties, which are verified by the increase of crystalline volume fractions (Vcry) and the decrease of coercivity (HC), respectively. The initial permeability (μi) of sample annealed with applied field exhibits relatively higher value at elevated temperature, which is attributed to the intensive magnetic exchange coupling between the α-FeCo(Si) grains through the intergranular phase.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic-nonmagnetic heterogeneous Fe27Co23Pb50 ternary metal nanowire arrays were successfully fabricated by alternating current electrodeposition into anodic alumina oxide (AAO) template. The effects of the different annealing temperatures (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600°C) on the structure and magnetic properties have been discussed. X-ray diffraction observations indicated that FeCo and Pb phases coexist for the as-deposited and annealed samples. Magnetic measurements indicate that the nanowire arrays have high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with their easy axis parallel to the nanowire arrays. The coercivity and remanence ratio increases as the annealing temperature rises, reaches their maximum at 400°C, and then decreases as the annealing temperature rises further. The mechanism of the magnetic properties and magnetic variety should be attributed to the special structure of the nanowires∕AAO.

Abstract:The effects of magnetic field annealing on the properties of Fe48Co52 alloy nanowire arrays with various interwire distances (D-i=30-60 nm) and wire diameters (D-w=22-46 nm) were investigated in detail. It was found that the array's best annealing temperature and crystalline structure did not show any apparent dependence on the treatment of applying a 3 kOe magnetic field along the wire during the annealing process. For arrays with small D-w or with large D-i, the treatment of magnetic field annealing also had no obvious influence on their magnetic performances. However, such a magnetic field annealing constrained the shift of the easy magnetization direction and improved the coercivity and the squareness obviously for arrays with large D-w or with small D-i. The difference in the intensity of the effective anisotropic field within the arrays was believed to be responsible for this different variation of the array's magnetic properties after magnetic field annealing.

Abstract:Annealing plays an important role in modifying structures and properties of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs). The annealing effect on the structures and magnetic properties of off-stoichiometric Fe45Mn26Ga29 FSMA has been investigated at different elevated temperatures. Rietveld refinements of neutron diffraction patterns display that the formation of the ɣ phase in Fe45Mn26Ga29 annealed at 1073K increases the martensitic transformation temperature and reduces the thermal hysteresis in comparison to the homogenized sample. The phase segregation of a Fe-rich cubic phase and a Ga-rich cubic phase occurs at the annealing temperature of 773K. The atomic occupancies of the alloys are determined thanks to the neutron's capability of differentiating transition metals. The annealing effects at different temperatures introduce a different magnetic characteristic that is associated with distinctive structural changes in the crystal.

Abstract:In this study, we report the effect of magnetic field annealing (MA) in relieving the stress induced during the milling of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets. The effect of MA processing parameters and particle size on the magnetic properties were investigated. Based on the results, magnetic field annealing is more effective in improving the magnetic properties of larger size particles, compared to finer particles. Our computational study on the role of particle surface defects in bimodal particle distribution agrees with results obtained experimentally. Magnetic field annealed powder has been successfully used to develop 4.6 g.cm −3 density bonded magnets with 75 vol% of magnetic powder and polyamide 12 (nylon 12) polymer binder resulting in 11.3 MGOe energy product.

Abstract:In situ external magnetic field was applied during the synthesis of FePt nanoparticles via a chemical solution method. FePt nanoparticle films were prepared on Si by a drop-coating method with and without a magnetic field. Annealing at 700 °C in reductive atmosphere was explored to obtain ferromagnetic FePt L10 phase. The effect of in situ-applied magnetic field on the structure, morphology, and magnetic properties of FePt nanoparticle films was characterized. It is found that the applied magnetic field during the chemical synthesis of FePt nanoparticles plays a key role in the crystallinity and magnetic property of FePt nanoparticle films. As-synthesized FePt nanoparticles under the magnetic field are monodispersed and can be self-assembled over a larger area by a dropping method. The applied magnetic field during the synthesis of FePt nanoparticles not only significantly improves the nanoparticles’ c-axis preferred orientation but also benefits the phase transition of FePt nanoparticles from face-centered cubic to face-centered tetragonal structure during the annealing process. The FePt nanoparticle films derived under magnetic field also show some magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract:Improving the high-frequency magnetic properties of Fe-based nanocrystalline alloys with high-saturation magnetic induction ( B s ) has received extensive attention recently. It was found that NA and in situ crystallization TFA (TFA1) have little effects on the B s and coercivity ( H c ) of the ribbons but they significantly affect the magnetic permeability ( μ ) and optimal annealing window. In contrast, TFA after nanocrystallization (TFA2) enables the ribbons to attain a higher μ in a wide frequency range and a wider annealing temperature range than NA and TFA1. The TFA2 ribbons exhibit a high B s of 1.45 T, low H c of 0.8 A/m, and high μ under 1 A/m of 24000 and 16600 at 1 and 100 kHz, respectively. The factors causing the improved soft magnetic properties were revealed in terms of magnetic anisotropy and magnetization processes.

Abstract:The magnetic properties of thermally annealed Fe nanocrystals prepared through ion implantation in single crystal yttrium-stabilized zirconia (Y0.2Zr0.8O19) were studied by quasistatic hysteresis loop measurements and by pulsed ferromagnetic resonance. The change of coercivity and the shape of hysteresis loops at different annealing temperature can be interpreted through the size increase of the nanocrystals. Magnetostatic coupling must be taken into account to understand the rise times of the ferromagnetic resonance, especially for the samples annealed at higher temperature.
