Abstract:Subdiffusion on a fractal comb is considered. A mechanism of subdiffusion with a transport exponent different from 1/2 is suggested. It is shown that the transport exponent is determined by the fractal geometry of the comb.

Abstract:This paper makes an attempt to develop a fractal derivative model of anomalous diffusion. We also derive the fundamental solution of the fractal derivative equation for anomalous diffusion, which characterizes a clear power law. This new model is compared with the corresponding fractional derivative model in terms of computational efficiency, diffusion velocity, and heavy tail property. The merits and distinctions of these two models of anomalous diffusion are then summarized.

Abstract:We propose diffusion-like equations with time and space fractional derivatives of the distributed order for the kinetic description of anomalous diffusion and relaxation phenomena, whose diffusion exponent varies with time and which, correspondingly, can not be viewed as self-affine random processes possessing a unique Hurst exponent. We prove the positivity of the solutions of the proposed equations and establish the relation to the Continuous Time Random Walk theory. We show that the distributed order time fractional diffusion equation describes the sub-diffusion random process which is subordinated to the Wiener process and whose diffusion exponent diminishes in time (retarding sub-diffusion) leading to superslow diffusion, for which the square displacement grows logarithmically in time. We also demonstrate that the distributed order space fractional diffusion equation describes super-diffusion phenomena when the diffusion exponent grows in time (accelerating super-diffusion).
The Fractality of the Hydrodynamic Modes of Diffusion

Abstract:Transport by normal diffusion can be decomposed into the so-called hydrodynamic modes which relax exponentially toward the equilibrium state. In chaotic systems with two degrees of freedom, the fine scale structure of these hydrodynamic modes is singular and fractal. We characterize them by their Hausdorff dimension which is given in terms of Ruelle's topological pressure. For long-wavelength modes, we derive a striking relation between the Hausdorff dimension, the diffusion coefficient, and the positive Lyapunov exponent of the system. This relation is tested numerically on two chaotic systems exhibiting diffusion, both periodic Lorentz gases, one with hard repulsive forces, the other with attractive, Yukawa forces. The agreement of the data with the theory is excellent.

Abstract:For every $\alpha < \frac13$, we construct an explicit divergence-free vector field $\mathbf{b}(t,x)$ which is periodic in space and time and belongs to $C^0_t C^{\alpha}_x \cap C^{\alpha}_t C^0_x$ such that the corresponding scalar advection-diffusion equation $$\partial_t \theta^\kappa + \mathbf{b} \cdot \nabla \theta^\kappa - \kappa \Delta \theta^\kappa = 0$$ exhibits anomalous dissipation of scalar variance for arbitrary $H^1$ initial data: $$\limsup_{\kappa \to 0} \int_0^{1} \int_{\mathbb{T}^d} \kappa \| \nabla \theta^\kappa (t,x) \|^2 \,dx\,dt >0.$$ The vector field is deterministic and has a fractal structure, with periodic shear flows alternating in time between different directions serving as the base fractal. These shear flows are repeatedly inserted at infinitely many scales in suitable Lagrangian coordinates. Using an argument based on ideas from quantitative homogenization, the corresponding advection-diffusion equation with small $\kappa$ is progressively renormalized, one scale at a time, starting from the (very small) length scale determined by the molecular diffusivity up to the macroscopic (unit) scale. At each renormalization step, the effective diffusivity is enhanced by the influence of advection on that scale. By iterating this procedure across many scales, the effective diffusivity on the macroscopic scale is shown to be of order one.

Abstract:We consider subdiffusion in a system which consists of two media separated by a thin membrane. The subdiffusion parameters may be different in each of the medium. Using the new method presented in this paper we derive the probabilities (the Green's functions) describing a particle's random walk in the system. Within this method we firstly consider the particle's random walk in a system with both discrete time and space variables in which a particle can vanish due to reactions with constant probabilities $R_1$ and $R_2$, defined separately for each medium. Then, we move from discrete to continuous variables. The reactions included in the model play a supporting role. We link the reaction probabilities with the other subdiffusion parameters which characterize the media by means of the formulae presented in this paper. Calculating the generating functions for the difference equations describing the random walk in the composite membrane system with reactions, which depend explicitly on $R_1$ and $R_2$, we are able to correctly incorporate the subdiffusion parameters of both the media into the Green's functions. Finally, placing $R_1=R_2=0$ into the obtained functions we get the Green's functions for the composite membrane system without any reactions. From the obtained Green's functions, we derive the boundary conditions at the thin membrane. One of the boundary conditions contains the Riemann--Liouville fractional time derivative, which shows that the additional `memory effect' is created in the system. As is discussed in this paper, the `memory effect' can be created both by the membrane and by the discontinuity of the medium at the point at which the various media are joined.

Scaling relations in the diffusive infiltration in fractals

Abstract:In a recent work on fluid infiltration in a Hele-Shaw cell with the pore-block geometry of Sierpinski carpets (SCs), the area filled by the invading fluid was shown to scale as F~t^n, with n<1/2, thus providing a macroscopic realization of anomalous diffusion [Filipovitch et al, Water Resour. Res. 52 5167 (2016)]. The results agree with simulations of a diffusion equation with constant pressure at one of the borders of those fractals, but the exponent n is very different from the anomalous exponent nu=1/D_W of single particle diffusion in the same fractals (D_W is the random walk dimension). Here we use a scaling approach to show that those exponents are related as n=nu(D_F-D_B), where D_F and D_B are the fractal dimensions of the bulk and of the border from which diffusing particles come, respectively. This relation is supported by accurate numerical estimates in two SCs and in two generalized Menger sponges (MSs), in which we performed simulations of single particle random walks (RWs) with a rigid impermeable border and of a diffusive infiltration model in which that border is permanently filled with diffusing particles. This study includes one MS whose external border is also fractal. The exponent relation is also consistent with the recent simulational and experimental results on fluid infiltration in SCs, and explains the approximate quadratic dependence of n on D_F in these fractals. We also show that the mean-square displacement of single particle RWs has log-periodic oscillations, whose periods are similar for fractals with the same scaling factor in the generator (even with different embedding dimensions), which is consistent with the discrete scale invariance scenario. The roughness of a diffusion front defined in the infiltration problem also shows this type of oscillation, which is enhanced in fractals with narrow channels between large lacunas.

Abstract:Physical and technological principles of formation of clathrate structures for supramolecular electronics are given in this paper. It has been established that supramolecular nature of the "host-guest" conjunction, in general, and hierarchical architecture of the corresponding clathrates, in particular, provide realization of such an extraordinary effect as an optically or a magnetically controlled phenomenon of colossal "negative capacity" with a predicted frequency interval of manifestation, magnitude, and multiplicity. For the first time, the experimental confirmation of the behavior of the electretized fractal clathrate GaSe⟨β-CD⟨FeSO4⟩⟩ as a dissipative element, which accumulates inductive energy, is demonstrated. A general approach for obtaining the generalized transport equations with fractional derivatives by using the Liouville equation with fractional derivatives for a system of classical particles and the Zubarev nonequilibrium statistical operator method within Renyi statistics is presented. New non-Markovian electrodiffusion equations for ions in a spatially heterogeneous medium with the fractal structure and a generalized Cattaneo-type diffusion equation taking into account the fractality of space-time are obtained. The model of subdiffusion impedance based on the Cattaneo equation with fractional derivatives is applied to multilayer nanostructures. Nyquist diagrams for different valuses of the parameter τ (delay time of a flow relative to a concentration gradient) and the subdiffusion coefficient Dα are calculated.

Abstract:Anomalous transport in a circular comb is studied. The circular motion takes place for a fixed radius, while radii are continuously distributed along the circle. Two scenarios of the anomalous transport are considered. The first scenario corresponds to the conformal mapping of a 2D comb Fokker-Planck equation on the circular comb. This topologically constraint motion is named umbrella comb model. In this case, the reflecting boundary conditions are imposed on the circular motion, while the radial motion corresponds to geometric Brownian motion with vanishing to zero boundary conditions on infinity. The radial diffusion is described by the log-normal distribution, which corresponds to exponentially fast motion with the mean squared displacement (MSD) of the order of et. The second scenario corresponds to the circular diffusion with periodic boundary conditions and the outward radial diffusion with vanishing to zero boundary conditions at infinity. In this case the radial motion corresponds to normal diffusion. The circular motion in both scenarios is a superposition of cosine functions that results in the stationary Bernoulli polynomials for the probability distributions.

Abstract:We consider the coagulation dynamics A+A -> A and the annihilation dynamics A+A -> 0 for particles moving subdiffusively in one dimension, both on a lattice and in a continuum. The analysis combines the "anomalous kinetics" and "anomalous diffusion" problems, each of which leads to interesting dynamics separately and to even more interesting dynamics in combination. We calculate both short-time and long-time concentrations, and compare and contrast the continuous and discrete cases. Our analysis is based on the fractional diffusion equation and its discrete analog.

Abstract:Protein dynamics involves a myriad of mechanical movements happening at different time and space scales, which make it highly complex. One of the less understood features of protein dynamics is subdiffusivity, defined as sublinear dependence between displacement and time. Ultradiffusion on the Fractal Branching Koch Curves

Abstract:Ultradiffusion is defined on a family of fractal branching Koch curves. By an exact renormalization decimation transformation the anomalous long-time behaviour of the autocorrelation function is obtained. For the particular hierarchy we find a non-universal crossover C1 = (m - 1)/2M and a universal one C2 = 1/2 as the effective temperature C is increased, where M is the maximum ramification number of the fractal. We also find that for large M, the dynamic behaviour of ultradiffusion on the fractal is independent of the effective temperature C.

Abstract:Determining the unknown order of the fractional derivative in differential equations simulating various processes is an important task of modern applied mathematics. In the last decade, this problem has been actively studied by specialists. A number of interesting results with a certain applied significance were obtained. This paper provides a short overview of the most interesting works in this direction. Next, we consider the problem of determining the order of the fractional derivative in the subdiffusion equation, provided that the elliptic operator included in this equation has at least one negative eigenvalue. An asymptotic formula is obtained according to which, knowing the solution at least at one point of the domain under consideration, the required order can be calculated.

Anomalous quantum transport in fractal lattices

Abstract:Fractal lattices are self-similar structures with repeated patterns on different scales. As in other aperiodic lattices, the absence of translational symmetry can give rise to quantum localization effects. In contrast to low-dimensional disordered systems, co-existence of localized and extended states is possible in fractal structures, and can lead to subtle transport behavior. Here, we study the dynamical properties of two fractal lattices, the Sierpiński gasket and the Sierpiński carpet. Despite their geometric similarity, the transport turns out to behave very differently: In the Sierpiński gasket, we find a sub-diffusive behavior, whereas the Sierpiński carpet exhibits sub-ballistic transport properties. We show that the different dynamical behavior is in line with qualitative differences of the systems' spectral properties. Specifically, in contrast to the Sierpiński carpet, the Sierpiński gasket exhibits an inverse power-law behavior of the level spacing distribution. From the point of view of technological applications, we demonstrate that the sub-diffusive behavior in the Sierpiński gasket can be used as a quantum memory. By interpolating between fractal and regular lattices, a flexible tuning between different transport regimes becomes possible.

Abstract:Fractals are fascinating, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for allowing the investigation of physical properties in non-integer dimensions. In these unconventional systems, many intrinsic features might come into play, including the fractal dimension and the fractal geometry. Despite abundant theoretical studies, experiments in fractal networks remain elusive. Here we experimentally investigate quantum transport in fractal networks by performing continuous-time quantum walks in fractal photonic lattices. We unveil the transport properties through the photon evolution patterns, the mean square displacement and the Pólya number. Contrarily to classical fractals, we observe anomalous transport governed solely by the fractal dimension. In addition, the critical point at which there is a transition from normal to anomalous transport depends on the fractal geometry. Our experiment allows the verification of physical laws in a quantitative manner and reveals the transport dynamics in great detail, thus opening a path to the understanding of more complex quantum phenomena governed by fractality. Quantum transport in fractal networks is experimentally investigated by performing continuous-time quantum walks in fractal photonic lattices. Contrarily to classical fractals, anomalous transport governed solely by the fractal dimension is observed.

Abstract:In this article, we formulate and solve the representation problem for diffusion equations: giving a discretization of the Laplace transform of a diffusion equation under a space discretization over a space scale determined by an increment h>0$$h>0$$, can we construct a continuous in h family of Cauer ladder networks whose constitutive equations match for all h>0$$h>0$$ the discretization. It is proved that for a finite differences discretization over a uniform geometric space scale, the representation problem over fractal Cauer networks is possible if and only if the coefficients of the diffusion are exponential functions in the space variable. Such diffusion equations admit a (Laplace) transfer function with a fractional behavior whose exponent is explicit. This allows us to justify previous works made by Sabatier and co-workers in [15, 16] and Oustaloup and co-workers [14].

Abstract:A growing number of biological, soft, and active matter systems are observed to exhibit normal diffusive dynamics with a linear growth of the mean-squared displacement, yet with a non-Gaussian distribution of increments. Based on the Chubinsky-Slater idea of a diffusing diffusivity, we here establish and analyze a minimal model framework of diffusion processes with fluctuating diffusivity. In particular, we demonstrate the equivalence of the diffusing diffusivity process with a superstatistical approach with a distribution of diffusivities, at times shorter than the diffusivity correlation time. At longer times, a crossover to a Gaussian distribution with an effective diffusivity emerges. Specifically, we establish a subordination picture of Brownian but non-Gaussian diffusion processes, which can be used for a wide class of diffusivity fluctuation statistics. Our results are shown to be in excellent agreement with simulations and numerical evaluations.

We also discuss the conditions under which such systems display a fractional behavior. Finally, we give a full discussion of the connection existing between fractal R-L network and the diffusion equation.

Subdiffusion in the Presence of Reactive Boundaries: A Generalized Feynman-Kac Approach

Abstract:We derive, through subordination techniques, a generalized Feynman-Kac equation in the form of a time fractional Schrodinger equation. We relate such equation to a functional which we name the subordinated local time. We demonstrate through a stochastic treatment how this generalized Feynman-Kac equation describes subdiffusive processes with reactions. In this interpretation, the subordinated local time represents the number of times a specific spatial point is reached, with the amount of time spent there being immaterial. This distinction provides a practical advance due to the potential long waiting time nature of subdiffusive processes. The subordinated local time is used to formulate a probabilistic understanding of subdiffusion with reactions, leading to the well known radiation boundary condition. We demonstrate the equivalence between the generalized Feynman-Kac equation with a reflecting boundary and the fractional diffusion equation with a radiation boundary. We solve the former and find the first-reaction probability density in analytic form in the time domain, in terms of the Wright function. We are also able to find the survival probability and subordinated local time density analytically. These results are validated by stochastic simulations that use the subordinated local time description of subdiffusion in the presence of reactions.

Resolvent approach to diffusions with discontinuous scale

Abstract:Quasidiffusion is an extension of regular diffusion which can be described as a Feller process on $\mathbb{R}$ with infinitesimal operator $L=\frac{1}{2}D_mD_s$. Here, $s(x) = x$ and $m$ refers to the (not necessarily fully supported) speed measure. In this paper, we will examine an analogous operator where the scale function s is general and only assumed to be non-decreasing. We find that, like regular diffusion or quasidiffusion, the reproducing kernel can still be generated by two specific positive monotone solutions of the {\alpha}-harmonic equation $Lf = \alpha f$ for each $\alpha>0$. Our main result shows that this reproducing kernel is able to induce a Markov process, which is identical to that obtained in [25] using a semigroup approach or in [17] through Dirichlet forms. Further investigations into the properties of this process will be presented.

Abstract:By an exact real-space renormalization-group approach, we investigate ultradiffusion with a hierarchical pattern of hopping rates defined on the regular Vicsek fractal. Anomalous long-time behavior of the autocorrelation function of ultradiffusion is observed. It is found that the transition from anomalous to normal diffusion occurs in the general n-dimensional case, and the transition point is independent of dimension. In the presence of bias, we find another unusual transition that leaves hopping particles trapped in some areas in contrast to the diffusive state for which the average square distance 〈${\mathit{R}}^{2}$(t)〉\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{\infty} for t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}. This transition is essentially different from the one for biased ultradiffusion of the one-dimensional multiple-furcation hierarchical system.
