Abstract:A hydrothermal vent system is one of the most unique marine environments on Earth. The cycling hydrothermal fluid hosts favorable conditions for unique life forms and novel mineralization mechanisms, which have attracted the interests of researchers in fields of biological, chemical and geological studies. Shallow-water hydrothermal vents located in coastal areas are suitable for hydrothermal studies due to their close relationship with human activities. This paper presents a summary of the developments in exploration and detection methods for shallow-water hydrothermal systems. Mapping and measuring approaches of vents, together with newly developed equipment, including sensors, measuring systems and water samplers, are included. These techniques provide scientists with improved accuracy, efficiency or even extended data types while studying shallow-water hydrothermal systems. Further development of these techniques may provide new potential for hydrothermal studies and relevant studies in fields of geology, origins of life and astrobiology.

Abstract:Pressure fluctuations caused by glacially driven variations in sea level may modulate magmatic and hydrothermal output at submarine volcanic centers, with falling sea level driving increased volcanic activity. In turn, glacially paced changes in submarine volcanism could induce globally synchronous variations in the delivery of bioavailable iron and CO2 from mid-ocean ridges and thus provide solid-Earth feedbacks into the climate system. While evaluation of submarine volcanic output on orbital-timescales is technically challenging, near-ridge sediment cores hosting hydrothermal plume precipitates provide continuous, spatially integrated, and datable records to investigate the long-term behavior of hydrothermal systems. Abstract:A RANS-based computational fluid dynamic model is developed to simulate the propagation and turbulent mixing of hydrothermal plumes in a stratified deep-sea environment and it is employed to study the Daxi hydrothermal field (DHF), Carlsberg Ridge in the Indian Ocean. Based on the results of in-situ measurements of the hydrothermal plume in the DHF, the parameter sensitivity is analyzed to evaluate the effects of the volume flux released from the vent orifice and the ambient buoyancy frequency on the plume dynamics. The results reveal the three-layer velocity field and obtain several important scalings, including the maximum plume rise height and neutrally buoyant plume height. Thus, it can be concluded that the classical entrainment assumption is applicable only to the plume stem below 0.6 times of the maximum plume rise height, and above that level, the structure of the flow field tends to be complicated due to the lateral spreading in the neutrally buoyant layer and circulation in the plume cap region. In addition, the simulation results show that both turbulent kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation rate attain their maximum values near the vent. However, the maximum turbulent viscosity is observed in the plume cap region, indicating strong turbulent mixing in that region. A quantitative analysis of the hydrothermal plumes in the DHF is performed by the proposed model and verified by the in-situ measurements, and the results suggest that the discrete heat flux of the DHF is about 39.38 MW. The proposed model can provide useful information for tracing the submarine hydrothermal vents, studying the matter and energy cycling in the ocean basin, and the exploration of submarine polymetallic sulfides resources and environmental assessment.

Abstract:Deep-sea hydrothermal circulation plays a pivotal role in the material and energy exchange in deep-sea environments, exerting significant influence on the evolution of seawater chemistry and global climate dynamics. Based on existing data and assumptions, this study presents a numerical model tailored for the hydrothermal circulation in the Wocan-1 Hydrothermal Field, Carlsberg Ridge, Indian Ocean. The model successfully simulates the hydrothermal circulation patterns within the oceanic crust, providing detailed insights into temperature distribution, flow field structures, and elemental concentration gradients. Through data analysis of the simulation results, we inferred the depth and temperature of potential heat sources within the Wocan-1 hydrothermal field. The maximum temperature of the heat source Tmax = 823K (550 °C) and the depth of the heat source h = 1 km are possible results. To deepen understanding of the heat source’s impact on fluid temperatures, a sensitivity analysis was conducted. The findings show a positive correlation between both the heat source’s temperature and its depth with the fluid temperature at vent outlets. Regarding elemental transport, this paper offers a preliminary exploration of the kinetic processes in hydrothermal circulation and presents an empirical relationship linking elemental concentrations at the bottom to those at the vent: Cvent = 0.26 Cboundary. This study enhances current numerical models for hydrothermal vents, offering valuable insights for future work and utilization in the Wocan-1 hydrothermal field, and potentially in any other hydrothermal field.

Abstract:Background: Geothermal systems have contributed greatly to both our understanding of the functions of extreme life and the evolutionary history of life itself. Shallow-sea hydrothermal systems are ecological intermediates of deep-sea systems and terrestrial springs, harboring unique and complexed ecosystems, which are well-lit and present physicochemical gradients. The microbial communities of deep-sea and terrestrial geothermal systems have been well-studied at the population genome level, yet little is known about the communities inhabiting the shallow-sea hydrothermal systems and how they compare to those inhabiting other geothermal systems. Results: Here, we used genome-resolved metagenomic and metaproteomic approaches to probe into the genetic potential and protein expression of microorganisms from the shallow-sea vent fluids off Kueishantao Island. The families Nautiliaceae and Campylobacteraceae within the Epsilonbacteraeota and the Thiomicrospiraceae within the Gammaproteobacteria were prevalent in vent fluids over a 3-year sampling period. We successfully reconstructed the in situ metabolic modules of the predominant populations within the Epsilonbacteraeota and Gammaproteobacteria by mapping the metaproteomic data back to metagenome-assembled genomes. Those active bacteria could use the reductive tricarboxylic acid cycle or Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle for autotrophic carbon fixation, with the ability to use reduced sulfur species, hydrogen or formate as electron donors, and oxygen as a terminal electron acceptor via cytochrome bd oxidase or cytochrome bb3 oxidase. Comparative metagenomic and genomic analyses revealed dramatic differences between submarine and terrestrial geothermal systems, including microbial functional potentials for carbon fixation and energy conversion. Furthermore, shallow-sea hydrothermal systems shared many of the major microbial genera that were first isolated from deep-sea and terrestrial geothermal systems, while deep-sea and terrestrial geothermal systems shared few genera. Conclusions: The metabolic machinery of the active populations within Epsilonbacteraeota and Gammaproteobacteria at shallow-sea vents can mirror those living at deep-sea vents. With respect to specific taxa and metabolic potentials, the microbial realm in the shallow-sea hydrothermal system presented ecological linkage to both deep-sea and terrestrial geothermal systems.

Abstract:The Daxi Vent Field (DVF) is located on a neovolcanic ridge within a non-transform offset at water depths of similar to 3500 m, on the Carlsberg Ridge, northwest Indian Ocean. In 2017, we investigated this site using the submersible Jiaolong and collected two fluid samples from orifices of chimneys named "Buddha's Hands" and "A1", about 37 m apart. Their in-situ measured temperatures are 273 degrees C and 272 degrees C, respectively. The Buddha's Hands fluid is highly Cl-enriched (928 mM), while the A1 fluid is Cl-depleted (303 mM). This indicates that they have undergone phase separation. The segregated phases must have remixed during the ascent because the vapor and brine phases sampled cannot be produced by the same phase separation history without other processes. Olivine-rich and/or ultramafic mantle rocks must have been involved during the hydrothermal circulation as evidenced by high dissolved H-2 (7.07 mM) and methane (0.884 mM) concentrations, a depletion in B relative to seawater, high Ca and low K, and large positive Eu anomalies. The Fe content in Buddha's Hands fluid is extremely high (11,900 mu M) as a result of phase separation, while the Cu concentrations in both fluids are relatively low due to entrainment of seawater which results in precipitation of Cu-rich sulfides in the subseafloor. The concentrations of Zn, Ag, Ga, Sn, Sb, and Cd in A1 vent fluid are significantly elevated due to generation of acidity and remobilization of these elements as Cu-rich sulfides are deposited. The subseafloor processes and associated geochemistry of hydrothermal fluids at the DVF are distinct from other mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal systems due to the specific geologic setting. Hence a hybrid model of hydrothermal circulation is proposed. This study broadens our understanding of the hydrothermal processes occurring in areas of NTO setting and provides more information on mass fluxes discharging from hydrothermal systems and the formation of sulfide deposits.
Hydrothermal systems at offshore Taiwan: Unique biological and geochemical characteristics

Abstract:Offshore eastern Taiwan situated in the West Pacific active zone, there are multiple hydrothermal vents among which Kueishantao (KST) and Lutao (LT) host the most active systems. This paper reviewed the progress of the geochemical characteristics and biological responses of the KST and LT hydrothermal systems. The vent fluids emanated from the shallow KST hydrothermal vents have the world's lowest pH (1.52) values of any submarine vents. The fluids are rich in heavy metals and are accompanied by gases composed mostly by CO2. The hydrotherm-al vents are considered to be a source for chromophoric and fluorescent dissolved organic matter in the oceans. The hydrothermal systems showed the world’s lowest concentration of dissolved organic carbon (14 μmol/L) and unique kinetic characteristics in Lutao. Native sulfur chimneys and sulfur balls were found around the KST vents. The highly toxic and acidic KST vent fluids have disturbed the behavior of ambient macro-organisms including crabs which have developed detoxication measures. The active bacteria groups in the KST field are dominated by Gammaproteobacteria and Epsilonbacteraeota that are involved in the carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen metabolic path-ways. Sulfur-reducing and sulfide-oxidizing chemolithoautotrophs account for most of the primary biomass syn-thesis, which fuels microbial energy flow and element cycling in the hydrothermal systems. Vent crab evolved an adaptive modulation of reproductive behavior to survive in the hydrothermal vent field. Under the stress of the KST hydrothermal activity, the microorganisms have generated cryptic compounds and metabolic products. Further-more, both the KST and LD hydrothermal systems are affected by tides and catastrophic events such as typhoons and earthquakes. The studies on the hydrothermal systems at offshore Taiwan are of essential importance for invest-igating the geochemical cycles and eco-environmental impacts of global hydrothermal systems.

Abstract:XRD analyzing on the surface sediments from the East Pacific found that there is an identical assemblage of quartz, albite and barite in most samples. Under SE an euhedral crystal structure appears in the most samples, which shows that they have been without considerable transpartatin and can be regarded as authigenic minerals in situ.Up to now, authigenic albite is mainly found in reservoir sandstone in great depth, with a crystalline temperature above 70 ℃. Barite with similar idiomorph has been reported in the Guaymas Basin, California, and been confirmed with hydrothermal origin. For these reasons, the authors believe that the authigenic quartz albite barite found in the surface sediment from East Pacific is a typical thermal water assemblage. This means that in the ocean basin far away from the mid ocean ridge there is thermal water activities with certain scale, which may have some impacts on the global environment, especially the long cycle climate changes.

Abstract:There has been a surge in the number of studies on submarine hydrothermal vents and smokers, which has enhanced our understanding of the evolution of organic hydrocarbons and compounds with heat and various inorganics released from the inner earth. There is great variability in the organic compounds produced in these regions due to the complex and varied synthesis and alteration conditions present on seabeds. This invokes potential influences to interpret hydrocarbon biomarkers and compounds as toolkits to reconstruct paleoenvironments, past organism diversity and catastrophic events and to decipher ore or petroleum systems, which have been associated with hydrothermal activities or events. The degree to which these organic molecules (e.g., n-alkanes, steranes, and dibenzothiophene) could be hydrothermally (secondarily) impacted remains incompletely understood. This review compares the organic geochemistry between submarine and on-land hydrothermal environments, highlight the importance of organic–inorganic interactions, and reappraise hydrothermally altered hydrocarbons, biomarkers and compounds that are extractable by organic solvents. Hydrothermal alteration significantly compromises the use of organic geochemical proxies due to changes in molecular composition, e.g., unresolved complex mixtures (UCMs), biomarkers, unsubstituted/alkyl/phenyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocyclic PAHs (e.g., S-containing PAHs). These features are recorded to provide pseudomathematical correlations between various parameters and proxies based on varied numerators and denominators of ratios, which may yield misinterpretations. Based on the molecular transformations and distributions of three groups of compounds, i.e., unsubstituted PAHs, phenyl derivatives, and S-containing PAHs, we propose a set of concise molecular marker-based indices and ternary diagrams for identifying and gauging the relative influence of hydrothermal effects on potentially affected geological samples. Finally, we discuss the future outlook for assessing the contribution of hydrothermal alteration to different research fields related to hydrothermal environments or events.
Development and application of chemical sensor for hydrothermal vents detection

Abstract:The water around submarine hydrothermal vents has significant turbidity and chemical composition anomalies, providing an important indicator for finding hydrothermal vents. In this paper, a detection method of submarine hydrothermal vents was proposed, and a low-power chemical sensor hydrothermal detection system was designed. The chemical sensor can detect real-time potential values of pH, H2S, Eh, and CO32- when mounted on the relevant detection platform. Combined with abnormal turbidity, we can infer the location of hydrothermal vents. The results of the testing in the Southwest Indian Ridge showed that the chemical sensor can effectively detect chemical abnormalities caused by hydrothermal activity, which is an effective technique for detecting hydrothermal vents.

Abstract:Hydrothermal communities in deep seafloor live around Black Smoker sites. The primary producers of hydrothermal ecosystems are thermophiles and archaea. Bacteria convert chemicals (from the sulfur-rich fluid spewed out of vents) to energy, in a process called chemosynthesis. They get energy depending on the oxidation of sulfides (H2S, FeS2) and methane and the reduction of carbon dioxide, instead of photosynthesis. There are two kinds of relationship between thermophiles and other animals. Other animals eat thermophiles or thermophiles exist in a symbiotic relationship with vent animals. Thermophiles not only depend on the deep-sea hydrothermal activities, but also play an important role of hydrothermal mineralization. The source of them is likely to be subsurface biosphere. Black smokers could be “windows to a deep biosphere”, which has crucial implication for the research of thermophiles and the understanding of astrobiology and the origin of life.

Abstract:Gas composition is important for analyzing the origin of hydrothermal activity, for assessing active magma level and for evaluating eco-environmental effects of hydrothermal activity. In this study, we obtained gas samples from submarine hydrothermal systems off Guishandao and in coastal hot springs off Lüdao in Taiwan using self-made piston gas samplers. The chemical compositions of these gas samples were measured using MAT271 mass spectrometer. The main component of gases from Guishandao hydrothermal area is CO2, characterized by low temperature volcanic zone with high content of CH4 and active gases of CO2 and H2S, and low levels of SO2 and HCl. In 2011, the average contents of CO2, N2 and CH4 from white vents are 642.8 ‰, 149.4 ‰, and 177.5 ‰, respectively; those from yellow vents are 740.1 ‰, 36.7 ‰, and 30.9 ‰, respectively. The gas samples of Lüdao hot springs are dominated by N2 and enriched in CH4. The contents of active gases such as CO2 and H2S are relatively low. In 2012, the average contents of hydrothermal gases CO2, N2 and CH4 of Zhaori egg boiling hot spring district are 642.8‰, 149.4 ‰, and 177.5 ‰, respectively; those from inshore side hot spring of intertidal zone are 740.1 ‰, 36.7 ‰, and 30.9 ‰, respectively. The gas from Guishandao area is originated from deeper stratum than that from Lüdao hot springs, and has reacted with surrounding rock less violently during upwelling.

Abstract:Shallow gas is a kind of natural gas buried in shallow strata, generally, with methane as the main component, endowing it a potential energy resource while also a potential risk to the safety of ground engineering and environment. Microbial activity is usually regarded as an important driving force to generate shallow gas via metabolizing the environmental substrates. Therefore, the research on the microbial communities will be helpful to reveal the distribution of shallow gas in the gas-bearing formation. In this study, 30 sediment samples below the seabed in Hangzhou Bay (China) from depths of 1.5 m to 55 m were collected to investigate their microbial community, environmental characteristics and sediment type (clay or sand). It turned out that the presence of shallow gas had a good correlation with the distribution of archaea rather than bacteria, with the dominant microbe of Bathyarchaeota, Thaumarchaeota, and Euryarchaeota in the formation. Methanosarcinaceae and ANME-1a with the capacity of methane metabolism occupied high proportions. The correlation analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) suggested that ammonium was a key environmental substrate to indicate the microbial community in the formation. The sediment type was proposed to shape environmental substrates in the formation, thus further affecting the microbial communities. The clay strata were demonstrated to have an important role in the generation and distribution of shallow gas, and more attention should be paid in terms of its resource discovery and engineering safety assessment.

Abstract:Shallow‐water hydrothermal vents have gained growing attention for their intricate characteristics caused by various epipelagic factors. The shallow‐water hydrothermal system offshore Kueishan Island, Taiwan, situated in an earthquake‐prone area, has prompted our exploration into the relationship between hydrothermal and seismic activities. Our 2‐yr observation uncovered that the hydrothermal venting entered a silent period in November 2020, followed by a resurgence of activity after September 2021, coinciding with high‐frequency shallow earthquakes occurring within 5 km of the vents. The pH level, dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity, pCO2, CO32− , and sulfide served as indicators of hydrothermal activity, contributing to environmental changes in habitats during period transition. However, peering physicochemical and soundscape conditions, distinctions may still arise during two separate active periods. Through multivariate analysis, this study highlights the variability of shallow‐water hydrothermal vents, emphasizing the necessity for more frequent and detailed investigations to further understand these extreme and dynamic marine ecosystems.

Abstract:Natural gas hydrates in seabed sediments are a huge treasure house of new energy reserves, which can alleviate the human coal oil crisis but may also be one of the causes of global warming. Submarine natural gas seepage refers to the phenomenon of gas leakage from the hydrocarbon storage area of the sea floor or the shallow methane formation area [1] . Studies have shown that submarine cold springs are one of the signs of the presence of natural gas hydrates. The cause of the cold springs and related research on the seabed has attracted much attention. The first is the potential energy development prospects. It is estimated that the total amount of organic carbon in natural gas hydrates in the world is equivalent to twice the global known coal, oil and natural gas [2] , [3] , and the natural gas hydrate in the ocean accounts for more than 99% of the global total. The submarine cold spring clearly indicates the existence of seabed gas, and it is closely related to submarine oil and gas and natural gas hydrate [4] . Is one of the signs of oil and gas resources and the existence of flammable ice. Followed by environmental impact. Abstract:The formation of massive sulfide deposits on the seafloor is closely related to sub-seafloor hydrothermal circulation. Hydrothermal circulation depends on the connected pores and fractures. Most previous studies have focused on hydrothermal circulation at the macroscopic scale; however, the transport pathways of hydrothermal fluids have rarely been studied at the microscopic scale. This study showed that multiple measurement techniques could characterize the pores of rocks and the mineral fraction surrounding these pores. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to measure the porosity of fresh basalt, altered basalt, massive sulfide, and sulfide chimneys obtained from the Southwest Indian Ridge. Meanwhile, the distribution of pore radius and pore throats in these samples was obtained using the NMR transverse relaxation time distribution. The scanning electron microscopy results and polarizing light microscope images showed that the pores of altered basalts are more developed than those of fresh basalts, which is consistent with the NMR measurement results that altered basalts have a large pore size distribution. In addition, metallic minerals such as pyrite were found to be precipitated in these pores, and microfractures were observed in altered basalts. This demonstrates that the pores and microfractures in these altered basalts provide pathways for fluid transport and are enriched with metal minerals. Altered basalt is closely related to the formation of massive sulfide deposits and is an important ore-prospecting indicator. Therefore, the study of rock pore structures and components can provide a better understanding of hydrothermal circulation and contribute to the exploration of mineral resources.

Abstract:Complex geological structures like pores, fractures and faults in submarine hydrothermal reservoirs have significant but unclear effects on internal hydrothermal flow and heat transfer, which hinders reservoir exploitation. This study establishes a heat transfer model of a buried pipe coupled in fracture-porous media based on the reservoir characteristics. The model is verified through experiments using fractured porous media test rigs and computational fluid dynamics simulations. Simulations are performed to investigate the effects of fracture flow velocity, width, cornerstone porosity on the heat transfer efficiency of the buried pipe. Results show that optimizing fracture flow velocity, fracture width and cornerstone porosity can substantially improve the heat transfer performance of the buried pipe. Increasing fracture flow velocity from 10 –4 m/s to 10 –3 m/s, results in a 161.92% increase of Nusselt number. When the fracture width increases to 5 times the pipe diameter, Nusselt number rises by 35.52%. The heat transfer is optimal at a porosity of 0.3. This study provides theoretical guidance for exploiting submarine hydrothermal resources and designing fracture-porous couplings to enhance buried pipe heat transfer.

Abstract:Chemical reactions, mineral diffusion, and deposition are pivotal in understanding the mechanisms of mineral deposition and the formation of seafloor sulfides in the hydrothermal circulation process. To understand the formation process of anhydrite in submarine hydrothermal systems, a computational model that combined component transport and chemical reactions was established and simulated using the mass transport model. The deposition rate of calcium sulfate was defined, and the effects of factors such as porosity, ion concentration, and inflow velocity on the temperature field in the reaction zone were thoroughly investigated. The distribution of temperature, porosity, and velocity during the reaction process was obtained, allowing for the identification of the chemical reaction patterns of certain ions in the early stages of hydrothermal activity. The simulation revealed the occurrence of biochemical reactions between two types of ions, leading to their deposition on the solid framework of a porous medium. With the increase in inflow velocity and solute concentration, the average porosities of the porous medium decreased by 0.495% and 0.468%, respectively, which consequently altered the structure of the rock. Such findings contribute to the inference of formation and extinction mechanisms of seafloor crusts and hydrothermal chimneys.
