Abstract:Driving with anger can result in hazardous driving behaviors, often arising from inadequate communication among Traffic Participants (TPs). Currently, external Human-Machine Interface (eHMI) technology provides a novel channel for enhancing communication among TPs, yet its role in regulating driving emotions remains uncertain. This study investigates the impact of eHMI technology on the regulation of driving anger. We simulated a driving scenario in which the preceding vehicle abruptly applied brakes to elicit anger from the following driver. Three eHMI formats (Symbol, Text, and Symbol + Text) positioned at the rear of the preceding vehicle were implemented to explain the sudden braking event and regulate drivers' emotions. Objective electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and subjective assessment data were analyzed to assess the effects of eHMIs on driving anger regulation. The results indicate that driving with eHMIs exhibited significant regulatory quality of drivers' anger. Among the three formats, Symbol + Text eHMI exerted a notable regulatory impact, while both Symbol and Text eHMI contributed to emotional regulation. This study illustrates the positive impact of eHMI on emotion regulation in traffic environments, providing valuable backing for traffic management authorities in developing guidelines and policies, and contributing to the standardization of future eHMI technologies.

Abstract:Negative emotions influence driving safety and possibly lead to traffic accidents. However, how to perceive negative emotions timely, release drivers from negative emotions and mitigate their potential harm to the roadway performance of drivers has not been discussed well. Listening to music is an effective way to influence driver emotion. Therefore, taking anger as an example, this study aims to examine the effects of music tempo and personal familiarity on releasing drivers from negative emotions and mitigating their negative effects on driving performance. Thirty drivers participated in a simulated driving experiment, and their driving performance and driver heart rate data were acquired. Data analysis are still in progress. Expected results would be that music with specific tempo or familiarity will be significantly better in mitigating anger emotion and in improving driving performance. The leverage of expected findings will be helpful for the application design of emotion perception and context music adjustment to improve driving safety.
Comparison of Different Combinations of Ultra-Short-Term HRV Features for Identifying Driving Anger

Abstract:Objective: Anger is one of the basic negative emotions, and scenes such as road rage can pose a threat to public safety. The expression of anger and the characteristics of heart rate variability (HRV) are closely related to the autonomic nervous system. HRV features can be analyzed using ultra-short-term R-R interval data; Therefore, this article aimed to compare the effectiveness of different combinations of HRV features in identifying driving anger. Method: Anger and calmness were elicited using video clips during electrocardiography (ECG). 67 HRV features were from extracted and remove individual differences. The best 10 features were selected by using Mann-Whitney U-test. Then, Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used to calculate the accuracy and compare these combinations. Results: as the number of features in the combinations increased, the identification effect became better, but the improvement decreased. After the number of features exceeded 5, there was basically no improvement. Meanwhile, the gap between the combination and combination also decreased. Although the overall effect might not be as good when there were single or few features in them, certain specific feature combinations had good results, such as the combination of four features $(\text{SDNN}+\text{RR}- \text{Mean}+\text{Prc} 20\text{NN}+\text{pNN} 20)$ which was already one of the best combinations. Significance: This study can provide important support and reference for the identification and intervention of “road rage” and other scenarios.

Abstract:Fatigue impairs drivers' performance and increases the occurrence likelihood of traffic incidents. This study aims to explore the capability of music as an intervention to reduce driver fatigue under different weather conditions by conducting a driving simulation experiment. The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Neuroticism (EPQ-N) scale is used to assess drivers' personalities. A mixed factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) is applied to analyze the influence of music on the driving behavior of different drivers under various weather conditions, including sunny, rainy, and foggy scenarios. Results indicated that drivers' fatigue levels are reduced by the music under less complicated weather conditions, such as sunny and foggy conditions. The results also revealed that drivers with low EPQ-N scores could demonstrate better physical reactions and driving performance in sunny and rainy conditions, whereas those with high EPQ-N scores perform better in foggy conditions. These findings could help prevent traffic accidents caused by driving fatigue in sunny and foggy conditions through the strategic use of music.

Abstract:Based on the platform on driving simulation,through selecting highway and urban road as experimental environment,the index of mental workload and driving behaviors of drivers have been monitored through the whole process.Each experiment lasts about 15 minutes.In the experiments HRV is used as assessment index of mental workload,while the use of rearview mirror,steering lamp and vehicle speed are used as indices on driver behavior.The experimental results show that compared with normal driving,when cell phone is used in driving,the phenomenon appeared-the driver's LFNU and HFNU decrease,and LF/HF increases obviously and TP increases,too.Excluding the effects of driving fatigue,it can be preliminarily concluded that the phenomenon is caused by increment of mental workload by using of cell phone.Under the situation of limited cognitive resource,the increment of mental workload causes the different degree decrease of abilities about information acquisition,use of steering lamp,gear position operation and speed control.In a word,using cell phone in driving can cause the increase of mental workload,and can produce negative effect on driving behaviors and generate potential safety hazard.Therefore,the departments concerned should make legal limits on using cell phone in driving to reduce risks of traffic accidents.

Abstract:Like outside scenery, the car interior noise and road condition will affect the driver's mental state when driving. In order to explore the influence of external visual and auditory factors on the driver's mood in the driving process based on research of traffic soundscape, this paper has selected four backbone roads of Tianjin city (China) to test and drive a gasoline passenger vehicle at different speeds. Near Acoustic Holographic was used to scan interior acoustic field distribution, while the tracking shot of the driver's location was recorded by a Sony camera. People with different characteristics were invited to watch the video and completed a self-designed survey questionnaire. The external factors affecting the driver's mood were explored by analyzing all these data. After the investigation, we found that the sound field distribution inside the car could be affected directly and significantly by the opening and closing the car window when driving; in the case of keeping the window closed, the acoustic characteristics of the car cabin was relatively stable; and the visual impact factor of the driver's mood is mainly related to the traffic congestion degree and the construction quality of road surface, whereas the road appearance and aesthetics, which people usually concern about have very little influence.

Abstract:The effects of situational (state) driving anger on driving performance and allocation of driver visual attention were studied using a driving simulator experiment. A total of 24 licensed drivers, half being experienced and half novices, took part in this study. Each participant completed two similar drives, one in an emotion-neutral condition and one in an angry state. The anger emotion state was induced using a 5-min long traffic-related video clip. The results showed that compared with emotion-neutral drivers, drivers in an angry state tended to drive faster, maintain less headway while following a lead vehicle, and accept shorter gaps when performing left-turns. Moreover, when angry, drivers tended to adopt later and harder braking in the lane merging event, indicating a failure to respond properly to an imminent crash that fell into the peripheral areas of the road. Responses to emergency situations that happened in the centre areas of the road, however, were unaffected by situational anger. Results on eye movement data revealed that when angry, drivers scanned a narrower area and applied a more heuristic processing style, both of which may increase the chance of missing potential hazards in peripheral areas. Furthermore, it was found that increased experience did not better prepare drivers for the adverse influences of situational anger. Is music a mediator impacting car following when driver’s personalities are considered

Abstract:<p>Music can influence car following performance. However, it is not well resolved about its mediation effect on car following when the drivers' personalities are considered. We investigated how music style and tempo influence car following with different personalities. Twelve tracks were used in this study, four for each music tempo range, i.e., slow, medium, and fast tempo, and six for each music style, i.e., classical and pop one. The results showed introverts were more susceptible to music, and tend to listen to slow tempo music and classical one. In addition, pop music aroused the drivers more than classical and may induce closer headway distance. Furthermore, with the tempo speeding up, the drivers were more excited, less concentrated and performed less stablely. The medium music tempo was the most appropriate choice for keeping stable headway distance and taking actions to the changes of the leading vehicle. The present study shows personality can mediate the influence of music listening while driving, and music style and tempo can impact the mediation in a specific way. The study provides a guide on the music choice during driving and may bring benefits to the configuration of the music radio program and car music player.</p>

Abstract:Research suggests that speech-based interventions can mitigate driving anger and enhance road safety. The present study found that both positive and negative comments can reduce anger state and perceived workload, and improve driving performance. In addition, positive comment including description of the driving environment and comment on drivers is more effective than negative comment intervention, which is indicated by larger effect size and higher user satisfaction and acceptance. The research findings could provide practical implications on the design of in-vehicle intelligent agents for driving behavior intervention.

Abstract:Traffic includes people, cars and the environment, and people are subjective and changeable. When the driver’s psychology or behavior changes, the possibility of accident will increase. Emotion is a major factor affecting the psychological and physiological changes of drivers. Anxiety is generally considered to be one of the emotions that are easy to cause traffic accidents. For this, this paper collects and counts the driving data through the design of simulation driving experiment. At the same time, an emotion induced experiment was designed to simulate the changes of driving behavior caused by anxiety during car-following, and the process was recorded. The average analysis method is used to summarize and analyze the driving behavior under anxiety and calm mood in car-following driving, which also provides important theoretical support for the future research on traffic safety.
The effect of anger on pedestrian avoidance in a simulated driving task

Abstract:Studies of the influence of emotions on driving behaviour have produced contradictory conclusions. This confusion is related to two factors: emotional arousal and driving tasks. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of anger and happiness on the driving behaviour of drivers who encounter a pedestrian-crossing event on an unmarked road, which requires strategic and behavioural choices. Thirty-nine drivers completed a simulated driving task to avoid pedestrians under the influence of state emotion. The results showed that anger increased the average driving speed, the minimum speed when encountering a pedestrian, the probability of passing in front of a pedestrian, and the lateral distance to the pedestrian from the right. However, there was no difference between the impacts of happy and neutral moods on driving behaviour. These results suggest that general risky driving behaviour (e.g., speeding) is mainly affected by anger state. Meanwhile avoidance behaviour patterns in pedestrian-crossing tasks, as a driving behaviour related to prosocial attitudes, are also affected by emotional valence. Recommendations and implications for further research on driving anger are discussed.

Effects of Congestion on Drivers' Speed Choice: Assessing the Mediating Role of State Aggressiveness Based on Taxi Floating Car Data.

Abstract:Inappropriate cruising speed, such as speeding, is one of the major contributors to the road safety, which increases both the quantitative number and severity of traffic accidents. Previous studies have indicated that traffic congestion is one of the primary causes of drivers' frustration and aggression, which may lead to inappropriate speed choice. In this study, the large taxi floating car data (FCD) was used to empirically evaluate how traffic congestion-related negative moods, defined as state aggressiveness, affected drivers' speed choice. The indirect effect of traffic delay on the cruising speed adjustment through the state aggressiveness was assessed through the mediation analysis. Furthermore, the moderated mediation analysis was performed to explore the effect of driver type, value of time, and working duration on the mediation role of state aggressiveness. The results proved that the state aggressiveness was the mediator of the relationship between travel delays and driving speed adjustment, and the mediation role was different across various driver types. As compared to the aggressive drivers, the normal drivers and the steady drivers tended to behave more aggressively after experiencing non-recurrent congestion during the early stage of the trips. When the value of time was high, steady drivers were more likely to adjust their speed choice although the effect was not statistically significant for other driver types. The validation results indicated that the speed model incorporating state aggressiveness could better predict the travel time than the traditional speed model that only considering the specific expected speed distribution. The prediction results for the manifest indicators of state aggressiveness, such as the maximum speed and the speed deviation, also demonstrated a reasonable reflection of the field data.

Abstract:Few studies have investigated the impact of landscapes on humans' mental status while they are moving at high speeds, such as driving on the freeway. This study used a simulation system to measure drivers' mental responses to six different freeway landscapes. Each of the 33 participants completed six different 90-minute simulated driving tasks in a randomly assigned sequence. The six landscape conditions consisted of an identical freeway infrastructure, with different roadside landscapes. Results show significant differences between landscape conditions and drivers' mental responses. Landscape conditions with greater greenness, in general, had a greater positive impact on drivers' mental status. The barren and tree regular landscapes yielded the worst and best results, respectively. Further, higher complexity was associated with a higher level of negative mental status. We argue that the speed of human's active movement should be considered as an essential factor in the Attention Restoration Theory and Stress Reduction Theory.
Sound Effects on Physiological State and Behavior of Drivers in a Highway Tunnel

Abstract:Driving behavior in a highway tunnel could be affected by external environmental factors like light, traffic flow, and acoustic environments, significantly when these factors suddenly change at the moment before and after entering a tunnel. It will cause tremendous physiological pressure on drivers because of the reduction of information and the narrow environment. The risks in driving behavior will increase, making drivers more vulnerable than driving on the regular highways. This research focuses on the usually neglected acoustic environment and its effect on drivers' physiological state and driving behavior. Based on the SIMLAB driving simulation platform of a highway tunnel, 45 drivers participated in the experiment. Five different sound scenarios were tested: original highway tunnel sound and a mix of it with four other sounds (slow music, fast music, voice prompt, and siren, respectively). The subjects' physiological state and driving behavior data were collected through heart rate variability (HRV) and electroencephalography (EEG). Also, vehicle operational data, including vehicle speed, steering wheel angle, brake pedal depth, and accelerator pedal depth, were collected. The results indicated that different sound scenarios in the highway tunnel showed significant differences in vehicle speed (p = 0.000, η2 = 0.167) and steering wheel angle (p = 0.007, η2 = 0.126). At the same time, they had no significant difference in HRV and EEG indicators. According to the results, slow music was the best kind of sound related to driving comfort, while the siren sound produced the strongest driver reaction in terms of mental alertness and stress level. The voice-prompt sound most likely caused driver fatigue and overload, but it was the most effective sound affecting safety. The subjective opinion of the drivers indicated that the best sound scenario for the overall experience was slow music (63%), followed by fast music (21%), original highway tunnel sound environment (13%), and voice-prompt sound (3%). The findings of this study will be valuable in improving acoustic environment quality and driving safety in highway tunnels.

Abstract:While many methods have been proposed to detect driver stress with high accuracy, few studies have explored how to mitigate stress during driving effectively. This study proposed and evaluated two driver stress intervention methods, i.e., auditory Positive Comments w/o haptic Breathing guidance (BPC and PC). Sixty drivers were randomly assigned to four groups (i.e., no stress, stressful but no intervention-NI, PC, and BPC) and completed a simulated driving task with their physiological, psychological, and behavioral data collected. Driver stress was effectively induced by challenging simulated driving events. Haptic guidance provided by smartwatches efficiently regulated the breathing rate to the target. Engaging in the intervention was associated with increased RMSSD and did not worsen driving performance. Participants perceived moderate to large comfort effects. The complexity of driving scenarios should be considered for choosing interventions. Breathing intervention was less effective when complex maneuvers were required than normal driving. The findings provided implications regarding the design of in-vehicle stress intervention systems for intelligent transportation.

Abstract:Numerous drivers engage in both listening to music and undertaking secondary tasks while driving. Secondary tasks have been shown to have a negative impact on driving performance. However, the effect of music on driving performance can vary, either improving or impairing it. Nevertheless, the influence of background music on dual-task interference remains uncertain. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of instrumental background music on dual-task performance within a simulated driving environment. Twenty-four participants performed a color-discrimination task followed by a driving lane-change task. The results indicated that music enhanced accuracy in the lane-change task without a corresponding increase in reaction time (RT), both in single- and dual-task conditions. Additionally, when the time gap between the two tasks was 600 ms, RT for the lane-change task decreased with high music tempo. However, RT for the lane-change task did not exhibit any changes in response to music tempo when the onset time between the two tasks was short (100 ms), as well as in the single-task condition. Notably, participants' perceived workload did not significantly differ across the various task conditions. These findings emphasize the potential of background music to improve dual-task performance, particularly when considering the temporal gap between tasks.

Abstract:Traffic jam has become a serious problem in modern life. More and more people are suffering a psychological disorder called road rage. To help drivers to release the negative emotion, we designed an interactive automobile interface as a visual inference. We established the RSM and RDM model to define the driving conditions, then analysed the different emotional appeals for driving. Here we invited 30 participants to observe and investigate. According to participants' answers, we chose 5 emotions to correspond to driving conditions. After the implement, a valuation was also carried out to test the interface. It turned out that the interactive automobile interface provided a new driving experience, and the interactive visual inference were effective on releasing the negative emotion like anxiety, anger and depression.

Abstract:To investigate the impact of environmental noise on the cognitive abilities of drivers, this study, using in-vehicle voice interaction as an example, conducted laboratory experiments to assess the effects of road traffic noise, entertainment noise, and white noise stimuli on drivers' attention and short-term memory. The noise levels simulated to mimic acoustic conditions during car driving ranged from 35 dB(A) to 65 dB(A). The conclusions drawn were as follows: (1) Noise levels directly influenced subjective annoyance levels, with annoyance linearly increasing as noise levels escalated; (2) Both attention and short-term memory task reaction times of drivers were significantly influenced by noise types. Compared to traffic noise and white noise, drivers' cognitive efficiency was lower under entertainment noise. (3) Performance in complex cognitive tasks was more susceptible to noise levels compared to simple cognitive tasks; (4) Experimentally, it was found that drivers exhibited the highest cognitive efficiency in cognitive tasks when the environmental noise level was 55 dB(A), as opposed to noise levels of 35 dB(A), 45 dB(A), and 65 dB(A).
