Abstract:I discuss the indefinite metrical structure of the time-space translations as realized in the indefinite inner products for relativistic quantum fields, familiar in the example of quantum gauge fields. The arising indefinite unitary nondiagonalizable representations of the translations suggest as the positive unitarity condition for the probability interpretable positive definite asymptotic particle state space the requirement of a vanishing nilpotent part in the time-space translations realization. A trivial Becchi-Rouet-Stora charge (classical gauge invariance) for the asymptotics in quantum gauge theories can be interpreted as one special case of this general principle - the asymptotic projection to the eigenstates of the time-space translations.

Abstract:The tensionless string on AdS$_3$ is a laboratory to study different aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence. A particular question addressed in this paper is how the space-time symmetry algebra is encoded on the world-sheet. A natural prescription for calculating the space-time OPEs from the world-sheet is presented in the hybrid formalism. An argument showing that the OPEs are correctly reproduced from the world-sheet is provided, together with a few explicit calculations as consistency checks.

A Symmetry-centric Perspective on the Geometry of the String Landscape and the Swampland

Abstract:As famously observed by Ooguri and Vafa nearly twenty years ago, scalar field moduli spaces in quantum gravity appear to exhibit various universal features. For instance, they seem to be infinite in diameter, have trivial fundamental group, and feature towers of massive particles that become light in their asymptotic limits. In this essay, we explain how these features can be reformulated in more modern language using generalized notions of global symmetries. Such symmetries are ubiquitous in non-gravitational quantum field theories, but it is widely believed that they must be either gauged or broken in quantum gravity. In what follows, we will see that the observations of Ooguri and Vafa can be understood as consequences of such gauging or breaking.

Abstract:A brief review of the time-symmetrized quantum formalism originated by Aharonov, Bergmann and Lebowitz is presented. Symmetry of various measurements under the time reversal is analyzed. Time-symmetrized counterfactuals are introduced. It is argued that the time-symmetrized formalism demonstrates novel profound features of quantum theory and that recent criticism of the formalism is unfounded.

Abstract:In many cases the symmetry structure of quantum field theories can be neatly encoded into their associated symmetry theory (SymTFT), a topological field theory in one dimension higher. For geometrically engineered QFTs in string theory this SymTFT has been argued to arise from the background geometry, essentially by integration of the topological sector of string theory on the horizon of the geometry transverse to the QFT locus. In this paper we clarify some subtle aspects of this proposal. We take a higher dimensional approach, where the ten dimensional string theory fields to be integrated arise as edge modes of a topological field theory in eleven dimensions. The resulting construction provides a SymTFT generalisation of the descent procedure for anomalies.

Abstract:The Lorentz symmetry and the space and time translational symmetry are fundamental symmetries of nature. Crystals are the manifestation of the continuous space translational symmetry being spontaneously broken into a discrete one. We argue that, following the space translational symmetry, the continuous Lorentz symmetry should also be broken into a discrete one, which further implies that the continuous time translational symmetry is broken into a discrete one. We deduce all the possible discrete Lorentz and discrete time translational symmetries in 1+1-dimensional spacetime, and show how to build a field theory or a lattice field theory that has these symmetries.

The Numerical Evolution of Neutron Star Oscillations

Abstract:The present work investigates the numerical evolution of linearized oscillations of non-rotating, spherically symmetric neutron stars within the framework of general relativity. We derive the appropriate equations using the (3+1)-formalism. We first focus on the evolution of radial oscillations, which do not emit gravitational waves. We demonstrate how to handle a numerical instability that also occurs in the non-radial case, when the stellar model is constructed based on a realistic equation of state. We devise a coordinate transformation that not only removes this instability but also provides much more accurate results. [...] The main part deals with the evolution of non-radial oscillations (l >= 2) of neutron stars. Here, we compare different formulations of the equations and discuss how they have to be numerically dealt with in order to avoid instabilities at the origin. We present results for various polytropic stellar models and different initial data. [...] In the last part of this thesis we consider a physical mechanism for exciting oscillations of neutron stars. We use the time dependent gravitational field of a small point mass \mu that orbits the neutron star to induce stellar oscillations. With this particle we have a physical means which removes the arbitrariness in choosing the initial data. [...] By sampling various orbital parameters of the particle we show that in general the particle is not able to excite any w-modes. It is only for speeds very close to the speed of light that the w-mode is a significant part of the wave signal.

Abstract:This paper tentatively conjectures a possible physical picture that may help explain links between quantum field theories and string theories. A correspondence might occur if the stringy parameters $\tau $ and $\sigma_i $ are interpreted as representing particular types of observer capabilities. Observer limitations could be imposed by symmetries of relevant quantum mechanical observer states. It is possible that this postulate may in future be able to go a small way towards understanding a physical basis for some of the dualities that have been found in string/field theory.

Abstract:When spacetime is considered as a subspace of a wider complex spacetime manifold, there is a mismatch of the elementary linear representations of their symmetry groups, the real and complex Poincaré groups. In particular, no spinors are allowed for the complex case. When a spin$^{h}$ structure is implemented on principal bundles in complex spacetime, one is naturally led to an algebraic structure analogous to the one of the standard model.

Schrödinger Symmetry in Gravitational Mini-Superspaces

Abstract:We prove that the simplest gravitational symmetry reduced models describing cosmology and black holes mechanics are invariant under the Schrödinger group. We consider the flat FRW cosmology filled with a massless scalar field and the Schwarzschild black hole mechanics, construct their conserved charges using the Eisenhart-Duval (ED) lift method and show that they form a Schrödinger algebra. Our method illustrates how the ED lift and the more standard approach analyzing the geometry of the field space are complementarity in revealing different set of symmetries of these systems. We further identify an infinite-dimensional symmetry for those two models, generated by conserved charges organized in two copies of a Witt algebra. These extended charge algebras provide a new algebraic characterization of these homogeneous gravitational sectors. They guide the path to their quantization and open the road to non-linear extensions of quantum cosmology and quantum black holes models in terms of hydrodynamic equations in field space.

Abstract:String theory is canonically accompanied with a space-time interpretation which determines S-matrix-like observables, and connects to the standard physics at low energies in the guise of local effective field theory. Recently, we have introduced a reformulation of string theory which does not rely on an a priori space-time interpretation or a pre-assumption of locality. This metastring theory is formulated in such a way that stringy symmetries (such as T-duality) are realized linearly. In this paper, we study metastring theory on a flat background and develop a variety of technical and interpretational ideas. These include a formulation of the moduli space of Lorentzian worldsheets, a careful study of the symplectic structure and consequently consistent closed and open boundary conditions, and the string spectrum and operator algebra. What emerges from these studies is a new quantum notion of space-time that we refer to as a quantum Lagrangian or equivalently a modular space-time. This concept embodies the standard tenets of quantum theory and implements in a precise way a notion of relative locality. The usual string backgrounds (non-compact space-time along with some toroidally compactified spatial directions) are obtained from modular space-time by a limiting procedure that can be thought of as a correspondence limit.

On the Fate of Stringy Non-Invertible Symmetries

Abstract:Non-invertible symmetries in quantum field theory (QFT) generalize the familiar product rule of groups to a more general fusion rule. In many cases, gauged versions of these symmetries can be regarded as dual descriptions of invertible gauge symmetries. One may ask: are there any other types of non-invertible gauge symmetries? In theories with gravity we find a new form of non-invertible gauge symmetry that emerges in the limit of fundamental, tensionless strings. These stringy non-invertible gauge symmetries appear in standard examples such as non-abelian orbifolds. Moving away from the tensionless limit always breaks these symmetries. We also find that both the conventional form of non-invertible gauge symmetries and these stringy generalizations are realized in AdS/CFT. Although generically broken, approximate non-invertible symmetries have implications for Swampland constraints: in certain cases they can be used to prove the existence of towers of states related to the Distance Conjecture, and can sometimes explain the existence of slightly sub-extremal states which fill in the gaps in the sublattice Weak Gravity Conjecture.

Abstract:The description of space-time in a quantum theoretical framework must be considered as a fundamental problem in physics. Most attempts start with an already given classical space-time - then the quantization is done. In contrast to this the central assumption in this paper is not to start with space-time, but to derive it from some more abstract presuppositions like this is done in von Weizsaecker's "quantum theory of ur-alternatives". Mathematically the transition from a manifold with spin structure to a manifold with four real space-time coordinates has to be considered. The suggestion is made that this transition can be well described by using a tetradial formalism which appears to be the most natural connection between ur-spinors and real four-vectors.

Generalized Symmetries in 2D from String Theory: SymTFTs, Intrinsic Relativeness, and Anomalies of Non-invertible Symmetries

Abstract:Generalized global symmetries, in particular non-invertible and categorical symmetries, have become a focal point in the recent study of quantum field theory (QFT). In this paper, we investigate aspects of symmetry topological field theories (SymTFTs) and anomalies of non-invertible symmetries for 2D QFTs from a string theory perspective. Our primary focus is on an infinite class of 2D QFTs engineered on D1-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-fold singularities. We derive 3D SymTFTs from the topological sector of IIB supergravity and discuss the resulting 2D QFTs, which can be intrinsically relative or absolute. For intrinsically relative QFTs, we propose a sufficient condition for them to exist. For absolute QFTs, we show that they exhibit non-invertible symmetries with an elegant brane origin. Furthermore, we find that these non-invertible symmetries can suffer from anomalies, which we discuss from a top-down perspective. Explicit examples are provided, including theories for $Y^{(p,k)}(\mathbb{P}^2)$, $Y^{(2,0)}(\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1)$, and $\mathbb{C}^4/\mathbb{Z}_4$ geometries.

T-symmetry in String Geometry Theory

Abstract:String geometry theory is one of the candidates of non-perturbative formulation of string theory. In this paper, we have shown that dimensionally reduced string geometry theories have what we call T-symmetry. In case of the dimensional reduction in space-like directions, the T-symmetry transformation gives the T-dual transformation between the type IIA and IIB perturbative vacua. In case of the dimensional reduction in the direction of string geometry time $\bar{\tau}$, the T-symmetry transformation is independent of the T-dual transformation, and gives a symmetry that cannot be seen in the perturbative string theories.

Abstract:A construction of the real 4D Minkowski space-time starting from quantum harmonic oscillators is proposed. First, a 2D spinor space and its dual are derived from the standard commutation relations obeyed by the ladder operators of two independent 1D harmonic oscillators. The complex 4D Minkowvski vector space V is then constructed from these spinor space. The flat, real 4D Minkowski manifold is finally built as an approximate description of a manifold of unitary operators constructed from V. Lorentz invariance is recovered and several possible extensions are discussed, which connections to quantum optics and condensed matter physics.

Abstract:The paper addresses the question whether in four spacetime dimensions, besides standard supergravity theories, field theories exist whose symmetries include local spacetime translations and supersymmetries generated by transformations whose commutators contain infinitesimal local spacetime translations. It is shown that, up to local field redefinitions, there is a unique class of such supersymmetric field theories satisfying specified prerequisites which particularly concern the field content of the theories. The theories of this class have global supersymmetry and are similar to globally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories.

Quantum conformal symmetries for spacetimes in superposition

Abstract:Without a complete theory of quantum gravity, the question of how quantum fields and quantum particles behave in a superposition of spacetimes seems beyond the reach of theoretical and experimental investigations. Here we use an extension of the quantum reference frame formalism to address this question for the Klein-Gordon field residing on a superposition of conformally equivalent metrics. Based on the group structure of ``quantum conformal transformations'', we construct an explicit quantum operator that can map states describing a quantum field on a superposition of spacetimes to states representing a quantum field with a superposition of masses on a Minkowski background. This constitutes an extended symmetry principle, namely invariance under quantum conformal transformations. The latter allows to build an understanding of superpositions of diffeomorphically non-equivalent spacetimes by relating them to a more intuitive superposition of quantum fields on curved spacetime. Furthermore, it can be used to import the phenomenon of particle production in curved spacetime to its conformally equivalent counterpart, thus revealing new features in modified Minkowski spacetime.

Abstract:The algebraic formulation of discrete $P$ and $T$ space-time symmetries in terms of the Dirac algebra is shown to be flawed. This is corrected by relating these symmetries to fermion quantum numbers defined by a $Cl_{3,3}$ sub-algebra of the $Cl_{7,7}$ Clifford Unification algebra. A new {\it Conservation Law} is formulated to the effect that fermion decays and interactions conserve all seven quantum numbers defined by $Cl_{7,7}$. This can be applied in the design of high energy experiments and the qualitative interpretation of their results.
