Abstract:Although organizational research on health-related behaviors has become increasingly popular, little attention has been paid to unhealthy eating. Drawing on the self-regulation perspective, we conducted 2 daily diary studies to examine the relationships between work-related stressors, sleep quality, negative mood, and eating behaviors. Study 1 sampled 125 participants from 5 Chinese information technology companies and showed that when participants experienced higher levels of job demands in the morning, they consumed more types of unhealthy food and fewer types of healthy food in the evening. In addition, sleep quality from the previous night buffered the effect of morning job demands on evening unhealthy food consumption. Study 2 used data from 110 customer service employees from a Chinese telecommunications company and further demonstrated a positive association between morning customer mistreatment and evening overeating behaviors, as well as the buffering effect of sleep quality. Results from Study 2 also supported afternoon negative mood as a mediator linking morning customer mistreatment to evening overeating behaviors. Finally, our findings revealed that the buffering effect of sleep quality was channeled through employees' vigor in the morning, which subsequently weakened the effect of customer mistreatment on negative mood.

Abstract:Abstract The situation of pesticide residues in fresh fruits and vegetables was analyzed, and the necessity of the study was proposed; the factors influencing the risk perception of pesticide residues were analyzed, and the risk perception level questionnaire was designed and implemented, and the results showed that the higher the age, income, education level and living standard, the higher the risk perception level of pesticide residues; from the perspective of pulling the food consumption of people with high literacy and high income, strengthening the Internet media’s social orientation and supervision responsibilities, and suggesting the government to participate in the supervision and management of the whole food production process, three aspects are proposed to improve the willingness to consume and promote consumption.

Abstract:Background: Sleep is essential for health, especially during adolescence. However, most adolescents do not obtain the recommended 8 to 10 h of sleep, and their health is significantly affected. While both physical activity (PA) and diet have been shown to help improve the sleep quality and duration, the combined association of these two factors with sleep has yet to be analysed. Objectives: Therefore, the main objective of this study was to assess the evidence on the combined association of PA and diet with the quality and duration of sleep in adolescents. Secondary objectives were to analyse the evidence on the single association of PA with the quality and duration of sleep in adolescents and to analyse the single association of diet with the quality and duration of sleep in adolescents. Methods: To this end, a scoping review was conducted with a structured search in four online databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and ERIC). Results: The findings suggest that the amount of PA (time/week) and healthy dietary patterns, characterised by meal regularity and high consumption of fruits and vegetables, favour a better quality and a longer duration of sleep. Conversely, less weekly PA and the intake of less healthy foods, such as ultra-processed foods, are associated with decreasing the sleep quality and duration. Conclusions: In conclusion, the results underscore the importance of considering PA and diet as an appropriate approach to investigating sleep quality and duration in adolescents. Studies analysing the interplay between PA, diet and sleep in adolescents are scarce.

Abstract:Emotional eating is a prevalent maladaptive coping mechanism among college students, which is associated with mental health and sleep concerns. Though previous studies have established a link between sleep quality, depression and emotional eating, most of these have been in Western populations. In addition, few existing studies have taken physical activities into account, and the underlying mechanisms between these four variables remain to be further studied. Therefore, our study investigated the mediating role of depression and the moderating role of physical activity levels in the relationship between sleep quality and emotional eating among Chinese college students. Our study can help to understand the characteristics of this population and provide guidance on the intervention pathways for emotional eating.

Abstract:Background: Sleep problems and eating disorders (EDs) are both serious public health concerns often seen in young adults. Yet, the underlying mechanisms for such associations are largely unknown. This study aims to examine potential serial multiple mediation effects of problematic smartphone use (PSU) and psychological distress (i.e., depressive and anxiety symptoms) in the relationship between sleep quality and disordered eating behaviors/attitudes (DEBs). Methods: A total of 4,325 students from two Tibet universities in China (2,657 females and 1,668 males) completed an online survey that included the following measurements: Eating Attitude Test-26 for disordered eating behaviors/attitudes, the Chinese Version of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (CPSQI), Smartphone Addiction Scale—Short Version (SAS-SV) for problematic smartphone use, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) for psychological distress. Results: While the direct path linking sleep quality and DEBs was not found to be significant (Standardized β = 0.006, 95% CI = −0.0667~0.0970), both PSU (Standardized β = 0.016, 95% CI = 0.0256~0.0591) and anxiety symptoms (Standardized β = 0.014, 95% CI = 0.0203~0.0526) may mediate a link between sleep quality and DEBs; serial multiple mediation analysis revealed that a serial indirect pathway of “sleep quality -> PSU -> anxiety symptoms -> DEBs” existed(Standardized β = 0.001, 95% CI = 0.0002~0.0012). Similarly, while the direct path linking sleep quality and DEBs was not found to be significant (Standardized β = 0.006, 95% CI = −0.0667~0.0970), both PSU (Standardized β = 0.020, 95% CI = 0.0337~0.0692) and depressive symptoms (Standardized β = 0.015, 95% CI = 0.0139~0.0652) may mediate a link between sleep quality and DEBs; serial multiple mediation analysis revealed that a serial indirect pathway of “sleep quality -> PSU -> depressive symptoms -> DEBs” existed (Standardized β = 0.001, 95% CI = 0.0006~0.0038). Conclusions: Psychological and behavioral factors may comprehensively work together, leading to flow-on effects from sleep problems to disordered eating behaviors among university students. Appropriate interventions that target problematic smartphone use could thus potentially reduce anxiety and depression levels, which in turn will provide a buffer against the negative impact of poor sleep quality on eating disorder symptoms.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Transitioning from high school to college often poses significant challenges to students. In many cases, freshmen are now required for the first time to take care of their health habits, including making choices surrounding food and sleep. Diets higher in fats and lower in fruits and vegetables have frequently been associated with an increase in inflammatory biomarkers, which may lead to increased symptoms of depression and poorer sleep (Firth et al., 2019; Hagedorn et al., 2021). Methods Given the increased rate of depression (Liu et al., 2022) and sleep disturbance (Luo & Hu, 2022), we conducted a simple mediation analysis using PROCESS macro, Model 4, on first-year college students (N = 73), to assess whether eating habits predicted sleep quality directly, and indirectly via depressive symptoms. We hypothesized that eating habits would directly and indirectly predict sleep quality. Results Results indicated that there was no direct relationship between eating habits on sleep quality. However, we found that there was an indirect relationship between eating habits on sleep quality via depression. Conclusion Thus, our findings highlight the importance of having a well-balanced diet for different health outcomes. Given that depression and poor sleep are associated with poor school performance due to memory and concentration issues (Dillon & Pizzagalli, 2018; Hershner & Chervin, 2014), promoting healthy food choices for students is necessary to allow for success in college. Abstract:Growing evidence has suggested that dietary modification is implicated with sleep alteration. Our study aimed to determine whether an association between diet in terms of diet quality, certain food consumption, and dietary nutrients intake and sleep quality existed in Chinese urban adults, which has been fully investigated. A cross-sectional study was conducted among urban adults from eight Chinese cities. Total of 1,548 participants remained in the final analysis. Sleep quality was evaluated by the Chinese version of the Pittsburg Sleep Questionnaire Index. Diet quality, evaluated by Chinese Healthy Diet Index, and dietary intake, including food groups and nutrients, were derived from a semiquantitative Food Intake Frequencies Questionnaire and a single 24-hr dietary recall. The relationship between dietary variables and sleep quality was examined using multivariable logistic regression models. Logistic regression analysis indicated that better diet quality, which features greater food diversity, higher ingestion of fruits and fish, along with higher seafood consumption, lower eggs consumption, and higher total energy intake, was significantly associated with lower risk of poor sleep quality in the crude model and the fully adjusted model with adjustment for gender, age, self-rated health condition, self-assessed mental stress, smoking, hypertension, and BMI. Therefore, we reached a conclusion that diet quality and certain food consumption were related to sleep quality. Although the associations observed in the cross-sectional study require further investigation in prospective studies, dietary intervention, such as enhancement in food diversity and consumption of fruits and seafood, might serve as a probable strategy for sleep improvement.

Abstract:Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has increased the already high levels of stress that higher education students experience. Stress influences health behaviors, including those related to dietary behaviors, alcohol, and sleep; yet the effects of stress can be mitigated by resilience. To date, past research studying the connections between dietary behaviors, alcohol misuse, sleep, and resilience commonly investigated singular relationships between two of the constructs. The aim of the current study was to explore the relationships between these constructs in a more holistic manner using mediation and moderation analyses. Methods: Higher education students from China, Ireland, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, the Netherlands, and the United States were enrolled in a cross-sectional study from April to May 2020, which was during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic for most participants. An online survey, using validated tools, was distributed to assess perceived stress, dietary behaviors, alcohol misuse, sleep quality and duration, and resilience. Results: 2254 students completed the study. Results indicated that sleep quality mediated the relationship between perceived stress and dietary behaviors as well as the relationship between perceived stress and alcohol misuse. Further, increased resilience reduced the strength of the relationship between perceived stress and dietary behaviors but not alcohol misuse. Conclusion: Based on these results, higher education students are likely to benefit from sleep education and resilience training, especially during stressful events.

The effects of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) on sleep quality improvement in adolescents

Abstract:Background: In recent years, there has been a notable surge in sleep-related challenges among adolescents. The emergence of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) content across various social media platforms has sparked interest in its potential to address these issues. This study explored the therapeutic impact of ASMR on sleep problems in high school students. Methods: The study involved sixty participants, divided evenly into four groups: three intervention groups (A, B, C) and one control group. For five consecutive days, the intervention groups engaged in pre-sleep ASMR listening sessions lasting 10, 20, and 30 minutes, respectively. Sleep quality was evaluated using mobile application tools and the subjective Sleep Quality Scale. Results: The analysis, performed utilizing repeated measures sphericity tests, revealed a significant correlation between ASMR intervention days and both objective sleep(P = 0.036) and effective sleep duration (P = 0.002). However, ASMR intervention did not significantly affect objective sleep efficiency or subjective sleep quality. These findings imply that ASMR interventions can significantly improve sleep issues in adolescents. Conclusions: ASMR has been extensively promoted as a potential remedy for sleep enhancement, this study substantiates its effectiveness in tackling adolescent sleep concerns.

Abstract:Pesticide residues, resulting from agricultural practices, pose significant health and environmental risks. This review synthesizes the current understanding of pesticide impacts on the immune system, highlighting their role in chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, Parkinson's disease (PD) and cancer. We emphasize the significant role of omics technologies in the study of pesticide toxicity mechanisms. The integration of genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and epigenomics offers a multidimensional strategy for a comprehensive assessment of pesticide effects, facilitating personalized risk management and policy formulation. We advocate for stringent regulatory policies, public education, and global cooperation to enhance food safety and environmental sustainability. By adopting a unified approach, we aim to mitigate the risks of pesticide residues, ensuring human health and ecological balance are preserved.
Air pollution exposure and adverse sleep health across the life course: A systematic review

Abstract:An increasing number of epidemiological studies have examined air pollution as a possible contributor to adverse sleep health, but results are mixed. The aims of this systematic review are to investigate and summarize the associations between exposures to air pollutants and various sleep measures across the lifespan. PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science, and PsycInfo were searched through October 2019 to identify original data-based research examining direct epidemiological associations between ambient and indoor air pollution exposures and various sleep health measures, including sleep quality, sleep duration, sleep disturbances, and daytime sleepiness. Twenty-two articles from 2010 to 2019 were selected for inclusion in this review, including a wide range of study populations (from early childhood to elderly) and locations (10 Asian, 4 North American, 3 European, 5 other). Due to variation in both exposure and outcome assessments, conducting a meta-analysis was not plausible. Twenty-one studies reported a generally positive association between exposure and poor sleep quality. While most studies focused on ambient air pollutants, five assessed the specific effect of indoor exposure. In children and adolescents, increased exposure to both ambient and indoor pollutants is associated with increased respiratory sleep problems and a variety of additional adverse sleep outcomes. In adults, air pollution exposure was most notably related to sleep disordered breathing. Existing literature generally shows a negative relationship between exposures to air pollution and sleep health in populations across different age groups, countries, and measures. While many associations between air pollution and sleep outcomes have been investigated, the mixed study methods and use of subjective air pollution and sleep measures result in a wide range of specific associations. Plausible toxicological mechanisms remain inconclusive. Future studies utilizing objective sleep measures and controlling for all air pollution exposures and individual encounters may help ameliorate variability in the results reported by current published literature. Abstract:Sleep is an integral part of individuals' health and wellbeing. Despite evidence showing that social stressors are important contributors to older adults' sleep problems, how the accumulative stressful life events (SLEs) and ageing attitudes independently and jointly affect sleep quality among older adults in developing countries remains unclear. This study examined the effects of SLEs on subjectively rated sleep quality among older adults in China, and explored the potential mediating and moderating roles of positive and negative ageing attitudes on the above association. Using data from the 2014 China Longitudinal Ageing Social Survey, we had complete data for 7,780 older adults aged 60 and older. We employed logistic regression models and the Karlson-Holm-Breen decomposition method. Our findings indicated that SLEs significantly increased the risk of poor sleep quality, especially for those who had experienced two or more SLEs during the past year. Positive ageing attitudes were associated with lower odds of poor sleep quality, whereas negative ageing attitudes were related to higher odds of poor sleep quality. Moreover, the mediation analyses suggested that SLEs were associated with poor sleep quality via negative ageing attitudes. The moderating effects further documented that higher levels of positive ageing attitudes can significantly attenuate the deleterious impact of SLEs on sleep quality. The findings highlight the significance of SLEs for older adults' sleep quality and shed light on the importance of ageing attitudes to improve older adults' sleep in China as well as other low- and middle-income countries, where the social safety nets are still underdeveloped.
An epidemiological study of sleep quality in adolescents in South China: a school-based study.

Abstract:Background This study explored the prevalence of disturbed sleep and investigated its distribution characteristics and associated factors in adolescents in South China. Methods Junior middle school and senior high school students (n= 1221) were recruited from schools in Shanghai, China. Students completed a questionnaire using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and factors associated with disturbed sleep. Results The prevalence of a tendency towards poor sleep was 34.32% [95% confidence interval (CI): 31.6636.98] with no significant difference between genders. This tendency increased with age, yielding a significant group effect (P < 0.01). In middle school and high school, the propensity towards poor sleep was 31.34% (95% CI: 28.2934.39) and 42.22% (95% CI: 36.9247.52) respectively. The factors associated with poor sleep were more television viewing during weekdays [odds ratio (OR): 1.56, CI: 1.361.71], more frequent computer/Internet use (OR: 1.25, CI: 1.081.39), earlier school starting time (OR: 1.12, CI: 1.071.28), and more time on homework during weekdays (OR: 1.78, CI: 1.511.98) and weekends (OR: 1.35, CI: 1.211.52) Conclusions A tendency towards poor sleep is common in adolescents in South China and its incidence increases with age. The factors associated with this phenomenon indicate that poor sleep in adolescents could be improved, at least partly, by reducing the use of visual technologies and by changing school timetables.
