Abstract:<p>Over the last few years, organic bioelectronics has experienced an exponential growth with applications encompassing platforms for tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, implantable, and wearable sensors. Although reducing the physical and mechanical mismatch with the human tissues allows to increase the coupling efficiency, several challenges are still open in terms of matching biological curvature, size, and interface stiffness. In this context, the replacement of bulky with more flexible and conformable devices is required, implying the transition from inorganic conventional electronics to organic electronics. Indeed, the advent of organic materials in bioelectronics, due to the indisputable benefits related to biocompatibility, flexibility, and electrical properties, has granted superior coupling properties with human tissues increasing the performances of both sensing and stimulation platforms. In this review the ease of functionalization and patterning of conductive polymers (CPs) will be analyzed as a strategy that enables the fabrication of platforms with high structural flexibility ranging from the macro to the micro/nano-scales, leading to the increase of devices sensitivity. Drawing from the concept of biomimicry, the human body tissues interfaces will be explored through an ideal journey starting from organic platforms for epidermal sensing and stimulation. Then, devices capable of establishing a dynamic coupling with the heart will be reviewed and finally, following the circulatory system and crossing the blood-brain barrier, the brain will be reached and novel sensing and computing implants advances that pave the way to the possibility to emulate as well as to interact with the neural functions will be analyzed.</p>

Abstract:Due to the mechanical mismatch between conventional rigid electronic devices and soft tissues at nature, a lot of interests have been attracted to develop flexible bioelectronics that work well both in vitro and in vivo. To this end, polymers that can be used for both key components and substrates are indispensable to achieve high performances such as high sensitivity and long-term stability for sensing applications. Here we will summarize the recent advances on the synthesis of a variety of polymers, the design of typical architectures and the integration of different functions for the flexible bioelectronic devices. The remaining challenges and promising directions are highlighted to provide inspirations for the future study on the emerging flexible bioelectronics at end.

Abstract:The continuous pursuit for a better quality of life promotes continuous advancements in intelligent technology.Flexible wearable and implantable bioelectronics have emerged as an innovative complement to rigid material-based electronic devices[1-3].Due to their distinct advantages in terms of ductile,ultrathin,and biocompatible features,these elastic and soft bioelectronic devices can be seamlessly mounted onto various real or artificial tissues and organs.They offer numerous applications in continuous health monitoring[4,5],human-machine interfaces[6-8],and therapeutic inter-ventions[9-11].These devices can dynamically track their surroundings,effectively bridging the gap among humans,machines,and real or virtual spaces.Typically,these devices monitor physical,chemical,and electrophysiological infor-mation based on piezoresistive,capacitive,piezoelectric,or triboelectric principles.To construct these high-performance multifunctional bioelectronic devices,diverse processing methods combined with emerging versatile functional mate-rials have been developed,enabling the formation of active components,interconnections,and hierarchical structures[12,13].

Abstract:Flexible, bio-integrated electronic systems have wide-ranging potential for use in biomedical research and clinical medicine, particularly as active implants with the ability to operate in a safe, stable fashion over extended periods of time. Here, the development of a thin, robust biofluid barriers that can simultaneously serve as long-lived sensing and/or actuating interfaces to biological systems represents a significant challenge. Requirements are for defect-free, biocompatible and impermeable materials that can be rendered in thin, flexible forms and integrated with targeted device platforms. This perspective summarizes various material strategies for this purpose, with a focus not only on properties and structures but also on their use in bioelectronic systems. The article begins with an overview of different classes of materials, including means to grow/synthesize/deposit, manipulate, and integrate them into test structures for permeability measurements and into systems for functional bio-interfaces. A comparative discussion of the most widely explored materials follows, with an emphasis on physically transferred layers of SiO2 thermally grown on silicon wafers and on their use in the most sophisticated active, bendable electronic systems for electrophysiological mapping and stimulation. These advances suggest emerging capabilities in flexible bioelectronics implants as chronic implants with diagnostic and therapeutic function across a broad scope of applications in animal model studies and human healthcare.

This study reports scalable approaches to technologies of this type, where thin microscale device components integrate onto flexible polymer substrates in interconnected arrays to provide multimodal, high performance operational capabilities as intimately coupled biointerfaces. Specificially, the material options and engineering schemes summarized here serve as foundations for diverse, heterogeneously integrated systems. Scaled examples incorporate >32,000 silicon microdie and inorganic microscale light-emitting diodes derived from wafer sources distributed at variable pitch spacings and fill factors across large areas on polymer films, at full organ-scale dimensions such as human brain, over ∼150 cm2 In vitro studies and accelerated testing in simulated biofluids, together with theoretical simulations of underlying processes, yield quantitative insights into the key materials aspects. The results suggest an ability of these systems to operate in a biologically safe, stable fashion with projected lifetimes of several decades without leakage currents or reductions in performance. The versatility of these combined concepts suggests applicability to many classes of biointegrated semiconductor devices.

Abstract:Flexible bioelectronics, offering soft functionalized interfaces to couple biology and electronics, have gained increasing interest due to its great promise in personalized health monitoring, point-of-care diagnosis, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), capable of mixed ionic-electronic transport, have been widely implemented in flexible bioelectronics due to their flexibility, biocompatibility, high transconductance, low working voltage, design diversity, and facile manufacturing. In this review, we focus on the representative bioelectronic applications of flexible OECTs. We first introduce the device physics of OECTs, with a highlight on their identifying features compared to conventional field-effect transistors. Then, the state-of-the-art channel materials used in OECTs are summarized, with discussions on their figures of merit. Followed by an introduction to the main techniques employed for fabricating flexible OECTs, we examine the up-to-date progress in flexible OECTs for bioelectronic applications, including diverse biosensors, electrophysiological monitoring, and neuromorphic devices. Accompanied by a concise summary, the challenges and opportunities in the commercialization of flexible OECTs are discussed.

Abstract:Flexible inorganic bioelectronics represent a newly emerging and rapid developing research area. With its great power in enhancing the acquisition, management and utilization of health information, it is expected that these flexible and stretchable devices could underlie the new solutions to human health problems. Recent advances in this area including materials, devices, integrated systems and their biomedical applications indicate that through conformal and seamless contact with human body, the measurement becomes continuous and convenient with yields of higher quality data. This review covers recent progresses in flexible inorganic bio-electronics for human physiological parameters’ monitoring in a wearable and continuous way. Strategies including materials, structures and device design are introduced with highlights toward the ability to solve remaining challenges in the measurement process. Advances in measuring bioelectrical signals, i.e., the electrophysiological signals (including EEG, ECoG, ECG, and EMG), biophysical signals (including body temperature, strain, pressure, and acoustic signals) and biochemical signals (including sweat, glucose, and interstitial fluid) have been summarized. In the end, given the application property of this topic, the future research directions are outlooked.

Abstract:Flexible and implantable electronics hold tremendous promises for advanced healthcare applications, especially for physiological neural recording and modulations. Key requirements in neural interfaces include miniature dimensions for spatial physiological mapping and low impedance for recognizing small biopotential signals. Herein, a bottom-up mesoporous formation technique and a top-down microlithography process are integrated to create flexible and low-impedance mesoporous gold (Au) electrodes for biosensing and bioimplant applications. The mesoporous architectures developed on a thin and soft polymeric substrate provide excellent mechanical flexibility and stable electrical characteristics capable of sustaining multiple bending cycles. The large surface areas formed within the mesoporous network allow for high current density transfer in standard electrolytes, highly suitable for biological sensing applications as demonstrated in glucose sensors with an excellent detection limit of 1.95 µm and high sensitivity of 6.1 mA cm-2 µM-1 , which is approximately six times higher than that of benchmarking flat/non-porous films. The low impedance of less than 1 kΩ at 1 kHz in the as-synthesized mesoporous electrodes, along with their mechanical flexibility and durability, offer peripheral nerve recording functionalities that are successfully demonstrated in vivo. These features highlight the new possibilities of our novel flexible nanoarchitectonics for neuronal recording and modulation applications.

Abstract:Flexible electronic/optoelectronic systems that can intimately integrate onto the surfaces of vital organ systems have the potential to offer revolutionary diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities relevant to a wide spectrum of diseases and disorders. The critical interfaces between such technologies and living tissues must provide soft mechanical coupling and efficient optical/electrical/chemical exchange. Here, we introduce a functional adhesive bioelectronic–tissue interface material, in the forms of mechanically compliant, electrically conductive, and optically transparent encapsulating coatings, interfacial layers or supporting matrices. These materials strongly bond both to the surfaces of the devices and to those of different internal organs, with stable adhesion for several days to months, in chemistries that can be tailored to bioresorb at controlled rates. Experimental demonstrations in live animal models include device applications that range from battery-free optoelectronic systems for deep-brain optogenetics and subdermal phototherapy to wireless millimetre-scale pacemakers and flexible multielectrode epicardial arrays. These advances have immediate applicability across nearly all types of bioelectronic/optoelectronic system currently used in animal model studies, and they also have the potential for future treatment of life-threatening diseases and disorders in humans.

Abstract:Engineered systems that can serve as chronically stable, high-performance electronic recording and stimulation interfaces to the brain and other parts of the nervous system, with cellular-level resolution across macroscopic areas, are of broad interest to the neuroscience and biomedical communities. Challenges remain in the development of biocompatible materials and the design of flexible implants for these purposes, where ulimate goals are for performance attributes approaching those of conventional wafer-based technologies and for operational timescales reaching the human lifespan. This Review summarizes recent advances in this field, with emphasis on active and passive constituent materials, design architectures and integration methods that support necessary levels of biocompatibility, electronic functionality, long-term stable operation in biofluids and reliability for use in vivo. Bioelectronic systems that enable multiplexed electrophysiological mapping across large areas at high spatiotemporal resolution are surveyed, with a particular focus on those with proven chronic stability in live animal models and scalability to thousands of channels over human-brain-scale dimensions. Research in materials science will continue to underpin progress in this field of study.

Abstract:At the convergence of organic electronics and biology, organic bioelectronics attracts great scientific interest. The potential applications of organic semiconductors to reversibly transmit biological signals or stimulate biological tissues inspires many research groups to explore the use of organic electronics in biological systems. Considering the surfaces of movable living tissues being arbitrarily curved at physiological environments, the flexibility of organic bioelectronic devices is of paramount importance in enabling stable and reliable performances by improving the contact and interaction of the devices with biological systems. Significant advances in flexible organic bio-electronics have been achieved in the areas of flexible organic thin film transistors (OTFTs), polymer electrodes, smart textiles, organic electrochemical ion pumps (OEIPs), ion bipolar junction transistors (IBJTs) and chemiresistors. This review will firstly discuss the materials used in flexible organic bioelectronics, which is followed by an overview on various types of flexible organic bioelectronic devices. The versatility of flexible organic bioelectronics promises a bright future for this emerging area.

Abstract:Wearable and implantable fiber bioelectronics can continuously collect physiological information and accurately modulate physiological environment, which have revolutionized the conventional way of health monitoring, disease diagnosis and treatment. However, most of the fiber bioelectronics reported so far have insufficient flexibility. They do not match the soft tissues mechanically and cannot form stable device/tissue interface, limiting their long-term use. In this feature article, we mainly introduced our recent progress on flexible fiber bioelectronic composite materials and devices, aiming to solve the problem above. We first introduced the fabrication of flexible polymer composite fibers with hybrid or core-sheath structure, which possess good electrical and mechanical properties as well as biocompatibility. Based on the high-performance flexible polymer composite fibers, a series of fiber bioelectronics with functions of biosensing, energy-harvesting and storage, and electrochemical modulating were constructed for wearable and implantable applications, which showed promising prospects in healthcare and medicine. Finally, we discussed the future development direction of flexible fiber bioelectronics. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Bioelectronics hold the key for understanding and treating disease. However, achieving stable, long-term interfaces between electronics and the body remains a challenge. Implantation of a bioelectronic device typically initiates a foreign body response, which can limit long-term recording and stimulation efficacy. Techniques from regenerative medicine have shown a high propensity for promoting integration of implants with surrounding tissue, but these implants lack the capabilities for the sophisticated recording and actuation afforded by electronics. Combining these two fields can achieve the best of both worlds. Here, the construction of a hybrid implant system for creating long-term interfaces with tissue is shown. Implants are created by combining a microelectrode array with a bioresorbable and remodellable gel. These implants are shown to produce a minimal foreign body response when placed into musculature, allowing one to record long-term electromyographic signals with high spatial resolution. This device platform drives the possibility for a new generation of implantable electronics for long-term interfacing.
Sustainable Natural Bio‐Origin Materials for Future Flexible Devices

Abstract:Flexible devices serve as important intelligent interfaces in various applications involving health monitoring, biomedical therapies, and human-machine interfacing. To address the concern of electronic waste caused by the increasing usage of electronic devices based on synthetic polymers, bio-origin materials that possess environmental benignity as well as sustainability offer new opportunities for constructing flexible electronic devices with higher safety and environmental adaptivity. Herein, the bio-source and unique molecular structures of various types of natural bio-origin materials are briefly introduced. Their properties and processing technologies are systematically summarized. Then, the recent progress of these materials for constructing emerging intelligent flexible electronic devices including energy harvesters, energy storage devices, and sensors are introduced. Furthermore, the applications of these flexible electronic devices including biomedical implants, artificial e-skin, and environmental monitoring are summarized. Finally, future challenges and prospects for developing high-performance bio-origin material-based flexible devices are discussed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic summary of the latest advances in the natural bio-origin material-based flexible devices, which is expected to offer inspirations for exploitation of green flexible electronics, bridging the gap in future human-machine-environment interactions.

Abstract:Abstract Advanced technologies that can establish intimate, long‐lived functional interfaces with neural systems have attracted increasing interest due to their wide‐ranging applications in neuroscience, bioelectronic medicine, and the associated treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. A critical challenge of significance remains in the development of electronic platforms that offer conformal contact with soft brain tissue for the sensing or stimulation of brain activities and chronically stable operation in vivo, at scales that range from cellular‐level resolution to macroscopic areas. This review summarizes recent advances in this field, with an emphasis on the use of demonstrated concepts, constituent materials, engineered designs, and system integration to address the current challenges. The article begins with an overview of recent bioelectronic platforms with unique form factors, ranging from filamentary probes to conformal sheets and three‐dimensional frameworks for alleviating the mechanical mismatch between interface materials and neural tissues. Next, active interfaces which utilize inorganic/organic semiconductor‐enabled devices are reviewed, highlighting various working principles of recording mechanisms including capacitively and conductively coupled sensing enabled by high transistor matrices at high spatiotemporal resolution. The subsequent section presents approaches to biological integration which use active materials for multiplexed addressing, local amplification and multimodal operation with high‐channel‐count and large‐scale electronic systems in a safe fashion that provides multi‐decade stable performance in both animal models and human subjects. The advances summarized in this review will guide the future direction of this technology and provide a basis for next‐generation chronic neural interfaces with long‐lived high‐performance operation.

Here, material innovation and structural design for the preparation of flexible hybrid electronics are reviewed, a brief chronology of these advances is given, and biomedical applications in bioelectrical monitoring and stimulation, optical monitoring and treatment, acoustic imitation and monitoring, bionic touch, and body-fluid testing are described. In conclusion, some remarks on the challenges for future research of flexible hybrid electronics are presented.

Abstract:Biomaterials have gained increasing attention in the fabrication of a variety of flexible electronics due to their tunable solubility, robust mechanical property, multi-active binding sites, and excellent biocompatible and biodegradable characterization as well. Here, we review the recent progress of bio-based materials in flexible sensors, mainly describe nature biomaterials (silk fibroin, cellulose and chitin) and chemical-synthesized biomaterials as well as their applications in health monitors, biosensor, human-machine interactions (HMIs) and more, and highlight the current opportunities and challenges that lay ahead in mounting numbers of academia and industry. Furthermore, we expect this review could contribute to unveiling the potentials of developing outstanding and eco-friendly sensors with biomaterials by utilization of printing techniques.

Abstract:Printable organic bioelectronics provide a fast and cost-effective approach for the fabrication of novel biodevices, while the general challenge is to achieve optimized reaction kinetics at multiphase boundaries between biomolecules and electrodes. Here, we present an entirely new concept based on a modular approach for the construction of heterostructured bioelectronic interfaces by using tailored functional "biological microparticles" combined with "transducer microparticles" as modular building blocks. This approach offers high versatility for the design and fabrication of bioelectrodes with a variety of forms of interparticle spatial organization, from layered-structures to more advance bulk heterostructured architectures. The heterostructured biocatalytic electrodes delivered twice the reaction rate and a six-fold increase in the effective diffusion kinetics in response to a catalytic model using glucose as the substrate, together with the advantage of shortened diffusion paths for reactants between multiple interparticle junctions and large active particle surface. The consequent benefits of this improved performance combined with the simple means of mass production are of major significance for the emerging printed electronics industry.
