Abstract:In this work, we have demonstrated the fabrication of Co3O4 nanoparticle-coated TiO2 NWs with enzyme surface functionalization, which represent an artificial metabolism-inspired photoelectrochemical biomolecule probing design. Driven by the solar energy, the oxidative species formed on the Co3O4-TiO2 photoanode serve as a charge shuttle between the photo-excited electrode surface and the redox enzyme that mimics a simple metabolism process, during which the enzyme can effectively function with high efficiency, thus leading to excellent sensitivity for metabolically important biomolecules. As a proof of concept, the successful probing of the ATP or cholesterol levels has been achieved using this Co3O4-TiO2-enzyme platform, with the capability of measurement in serum samples or from cell extracts.
Fabrication of electrochemically-modified BiVO

Abstract:A new electrochemically-modified BiVO 4 -MoS 2 -Co 3 O 4 (represented as E-BiVO 4 -MoS 2 -Co 3 O 4 ) thin film electrode was successfully synthesized for environmental application. MoS 2 and Co 3 O 4 were grown on the surface of BiVO 4 to obtain BiVO 4 -MoS 2 -Co 3 O 4 . E-BiVO 4 -MoS 2 Co 3 O 4 film was achieved by further electrochemical treatment of BiVO 4 -MoS 2 -Co 3 O 4 . The asprepared E-BiVO 4 -MoS 2 -Co 3 O 4 exhibited significantly enhanced photoelectrocatalytic activity. The photocurrent density of E-BiVO 4 -MoS 2 -Co 3 O 4 thin film is 6.6 times that of BiVO 4 under visible light irradiation. The degradation efficiency of E-BiVO 4 -MoS 2 -Co 3 O 4 for bisphenol A pollutant was 81.56% in photoelectrochemical process. The pseudo-first order reaction rate constant of E-BiVO 4 -MoS 2 -Co 3 O 4 film is 3.22 times higher than that of BiVO 4 . And its reaction rate constant in photoelectrocatalytic process is 14.5 times or 2 times that in photocatalytic or electrocatalytic process, respectively. The improved performance of E-BiVO 4 MoS 2 -Co 3 O 4 was attributed to the synergetic effects of the reduction of interfacial charge transfer resistance, the formation of oxygen vacancies and sub-stoichiometric metal oxides and higher separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. E-BiVO 4 -MoS 2 Co 3 O 4 is a promising composite material for pollutants removal. © 2020 The Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Published by Elsevier B.V.
Enhancements on oxygen vacancy and light absorption of alkaline-etched BiVO 4 for photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Abstract:Designing the favorable morphology with large surface area and abundant oxygen vacancies for BiVO 4 can enhance its electron diffusion lengths and improve its photocatalytic ability toward photoelectrochemical water oxidation. The ex-situ alkaline etching process is reported to be facile for enhancing the light absorption and oxygen vacancy of BiVO 4 , but the systematic study of alkaline etching on the photocatalytic ability of BiVO 4 is rare. In this study, alkaline-etched BiVO 4 is firstly fabricated using a hydrothermal process with different durations as the photocatalyst of water oxidation. The BiVO 4 etched by alkaline for longer durations presents rougher surface, more oxygen vacancies and higher light absorption. The larger carrier densities and the smaller charge-transfer resistances are also achieved for the alkaline etched BiVO 4 . The largest photocurrent density of 2.38 mA/cm 2 is achieved at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in the Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte for BiVO 4 etched by alkaline for 45 min, while the pristine BiVO 4 electrode only shows a photocurrent density of 0.59 mA/cm 2 . The photocurrent retention of 81% is also obtained for the alkaline etched BiVO 4 electrode after continuous illumination for 6000 s. The results imply the feasibility of applying the alkaline etching process on refining the photoelectrochemical catalytic ability of BiVO 4 .

Abstract:This work proposes a dual Z-scheme photoelectronic material for amplifying photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensing signal. Herein, CdS/Bi2S3/BiOCl with great PEC performance is obtained by one-step synthesis strategy for the first time. Thereinto, the unique dual Z-scheme material displays higher activity compared with a single material and binary composites. In addition, L-Ascorbic acid 2-phosphate is catalyzed in situ by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) to produce ascorbic acid (electron donor). The cross-linking reaction of chitosan and glutaraldehyde is applied for fixing ALP. Since the electron donor is produced by the catalytic reaction, the recombination of photo-induced electrons and holes is inhibited. Accordingly, the photocurrent is increased, getting the phenomenon of signal-on. Under optimal conditions, the sensing platform is constructed in a desired linear range (0.1 to 4000 U L−1) as well as the detection limit of 0.06 U L−1. The established PEC platform shows good stability and specificity. Consequently, Z-scheme CdS/Bi2S3/BiOCl would provide a potential strategy for PEC analysis and the field of photocatalysis.

Photoelectrochemical Properties of BiVO4 Film Electrode in Alkaline Solution

Abstract:A pressed BiVO4 film electrode with excellent performance has been prepared by a doctor blade method. The photoelectrochemical properties of the electrode in 0.1 mol/L NaOH have been studied. The results showed that the photocurrent and stability were better than those in the Na2SO4 electrolyte. Combined with the cyclic voltammograms for the intermediate analysis, the results indicated that the water photooxidation is a nucleophilic attack process involving four holes. The nucleophilic attack reaction is favorable in higher- pH alkaline solution, and the accumulation of peroxide intermediates is decreased. Moreover, when a higher bias is applied in an alkaline solution, the water photooxidation mechanism is more complex, and some bismuth intermediates are probably involved in the process.

Abstract:In the present work, a novel alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity colorimetric assay is proposed by integrating the oxidase-mimicking catalytic characteristic of CeVO4 nanoparticles with the hexametaphosphate ion (HMPi) mediated electrostatic aggregation. The CeVO4 nanoparticles exhibit good oxidase-mimetic catalytic ability to promote the 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation to TMBox, offering a significant change from colorless to blue. After a small amount of HMPi is added, the strong electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged HMPi species and the positively charged TMBox product leads to the aggregation of the latter, generating an aubergine HMPi-TMBox agglomerate. After the agglomerate is filtered out, the reaction solution turns to be almost colorless. When ALP is used to hydrolyze the HMPi species in advance, the electrostatic aggregation process is remarkably restrained, thus retaining the blue color of the CeVO4 catalyzed TMB solution. According to the new sensing strategy, highly selective and sensitive analysis of ALP activity was realized, providing a wide detection range from 1 to 210 U/L and a detection limit of 0.68 U/L. Accurate measurement of ALP activity in clinical serum matrices was also validated, demonstrating the practicability of the proposed assay in practical applications.

Abstract:Cathodic photoelectrochemistry with superior photostability and anti-interference capability has been shown to be appealing in the field of bioanalysis. However, a major challenge regarding this technology is the limited photoinduced electron transfer signal transduction mechanism. Herein, we disclose a finding of the bioinduced surface oxygen vacancy (V O) on bismuth trioxide (Bi2O3) nanocrystals, which underlies an innovative mechanism for cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis. The protocatechuic acid engendered from the tandem enzymatic reaction of p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase (PHBH) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) can coordinate with the surface of Bi2O3 nanocrystals through forming binary Bi–O–C bonds, which breaks the initial Bi–O bonds and enables the escape of O2– from the lattice to form surface V O in situ. The surface V O can function as a separation center for charge carriers, which is favorable to the generation of cathodic photocurrent. In such a system, the cathodic signal is linearly correlated with the targets, glucose-6-phosphate (G-6-P) and G6PD, in concentration ranges of 8.0 to 8.0 × 105 μM and 0.1 to 1.0 × 104 U/L, achieving detection limits of 2.0 μM and 0.03 U/L, respectively. This study not only offers a way of introducing surface V O in situ but also enriches the current toolbox of cathodic PEC bioassays and promises to stimulate further interest in exploring surface effect engineering in other fields.

High-performance self-powered photoelectrochemical bioassay system with a triphase oxidase enzymatic interface

Abstract:In the field of biomolecule detection, self-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioassay devices have gained considerable interest with no demand for an external voltage but rather solar energy consumption. In this study, we present a self-powered PEC bioassay system that consists of a nanoporous BiVO 4 photoanode coupled to a biophotocathode with a solidliquidair triphase oxidase enzymatic interface. The triphase biophotocathode was assembled by immobilizing oxidase on superhydrophobic Cu 2 2 nanowire arrays. A high and steady interfacial oxygen concentration can be ensured by the triphase biophotocathode with much increased gas mass transport capability, which consequently enhance the kinetics of the oxidase enzymatic reaction as well as the sensing performance of self-powered PEC bioassay system. For the diphase biophotocathode based system, the low solubility and slow diffusion rate of oxygen restrict the kinetics of the oxidase catalytic reaction. As a result, the proposed triphase self-powered PEC bioassay platform exhibits excellent performance with a linear range up to 20 mM for glucose (a model analyst) detection, which is 20 times higher than that of the diphase one. Furthermore, an exceptional anti-interface is obtained by the cathodic bioanalysis approach in the self-powered PEC bioassay system.

Abstract:In this study, a 2D BiOI nanosheet/1D BiPO4 nanorod/fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) composite electrode with a p-n heterojunction structure was prepared by a two-step electrodeposition method. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and electrochemical testing were used to characterize its composition, crystal morphology, and optical properties. The BiOI/BiPO4/FTO composite electrode has higher photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activity for the degradation of tetracycline than pure BiPO4 and BiOI. The PEC activity of the composite was 1.98 times and 2.46 times higher than those of the BiOI/FTO and BiPO4/FTO electrodes, respectively. The effects of the working voltage and BiOI deposition time on the degradation of tetracycline were investigated. The optimum BiOI deposition time was found to be 150 s and the optimum working voltage is 1.2 V. Trapping experiments showed that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (•O2−) are the major reactive species in the PEC degradation process. The BiOI/BiPO4/FTO composite electrode has good stability, and the tetracycline removal efficiency remains substantially unchanged after four cycles in a static system. The reason for the PEC efficiency enhancement in the BiOI/BiPO4/FTO composite electrode is the increased visible light absorption range and the p-n heterojunction structure, which promotes the separation and migration of the photogenerated electrons and holes.
Photodeposited FeOOH vs electrodeposited Co-Pi to enhance nanoporous BiVO4 for photoelectrochemical water splitting

Abstract:Co-Pi and FeOOH cocatalysts were in-situ deposited on the surface of nanoporous BiVO4 photoelectrodes. The FeOOH cocatalyst has little effect on the BiVO4 samples' morphologies, while the electrodeposited Co-Pi cocatalyst seems to affect the surface of BiVO4. The impedance intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS), Mott-Schottky (M-S) techniques characterize BiVO4 samples photoelectrochemical performance with the deposition of Co-Pi and FeOOH. The Co-Pi/BiVO4 shows better photoelectrochemical performance than the FeOOH/BiVO4, but the FeOOH/BiVO4 exhibited the better stabilities. The flat band potential and slope of M-S plotof FeOOH/BiVO4 have little variations compared with BiVO4. In contrast, Co-Pi/BiVO4 exhibited the down shifted flat band potential, which is beneficial for the photoelectrochemical water oxidation. The electron transfer measurements revealed that the deposition of FeOOH and Co-Pi onto BiVO4 significantly enhanced the photoelectrochemical performance via reducing the interface resistance and promoting the electron transport. Furthermore, Co-Pi cocatalysts can further pin the transport-limiting traps and significantly facilitate the electron transport.

Abstract:Photocathode-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors can well evade the intrinsic hole oxidation reactions occurring at the photoelectrode–electrolyte interface and expand the application of PEC sensors in the field of bioanalysis. Herein, a cathodic PEC sensor based on p-type semiconductor bismuth oxyiodide nanosheet arrays (BiOI NSAs) integrated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) electrode (ITO/BiOI NSAs/AuNPs) is fabricated by a two-step electrodeposition method. The local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of AuNPs facilitates the capability of visible light absorption of the BiOI NSAs. Meanwhile, AuNPs, as an electron reservoir, improve the charge separation efficiency of carriers by forming a Schottky barrier, allowing more electrons to be transferred to O2 dissolved in the electrolyte, consequently promoting the PEC activity of the photoactive materials. Furthermore, dopamine (DA) can enhance the photocurrent of the ITO/BiOI NSAs/AuNPs photoelectrode by binding to Bi3+ on the BiOI NSAs surface to in-situ-form a charge-transfer complex (CTC). Based on this phenomenon, a PEC sensor was designed for the determination of DA, and the PEC sensor showed acceptable results for DA detection in real samples. The PEC sensor demonstrates the prospect of BiOI-based materials in cathodic PEC biosensing.

Abstract:The organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) has been proven to be a promising platform to study the rich light-matter-bio interplay toward advanced biomolecular detection, yet current OPECT is highly restrained to its intrinsic electronic amplification. Herein, this work first combines chemical amplification with electronic amplification in OPECT for dual-amplified bioanalytics with high current gain, which is exemplified by human immunoglobulin G (HIgG)-dependent sandwich immunorecognition and subsequent alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-mediated chemical redox cycling (CRC) on a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived BiVO4/WO3 gate. The target-dependent redox cycling of ascorbic acid (AA) acting as an effective electron donor could lead to an amplified modulation against the polymer channel, as indicated by the channel current. The as-developed bioanalysis could achieve sensitive HIgG detection with a good analytical performance. This work features the dual chemical and electronic amplification for OPECT bioanalysis and is expected to stimulate further interest in the design of CRC-assisted OPECT bioassays.
A Highly Efficient Nanoporous BiVO4 Photoelectrode with Enhanced Interface Charge Transfer Co-catalyzed by Molecular Catalyst

Abstract:A highly efficient nanoporous non-doped BiVO4 photoelectrode with high photocurrent and low onset potential for photoelectrochemical water splitting was achieved by using molecular catalyst and amorphous TiO2 stabilization layer. This BiVO4 photoelectrode co-catalyzed by molecular catalyst of Ir-COOH exhibits the photo electrochemical performance comparable to the limitation values obtained in Na2SO3 sacrifice agent. Interestingly, the BiVO4/Ir-COOH exhibits more efficient interface charge transfer than BiVO4/IrOx as measured by intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) and intensity modulated photovoltage spectroscopy (IMVS) although the Ir-COOH molecular catalyst shows much lower electrochemically catalytic activities than the state-of-the-art IrOx, nanoparticles for water splitting. The Ir-COOH/BiVO4 was further stabilized by double amorphous TiO2 layers with little impact on charge transfer. In all, it is promising to achieve high efficiency water splitting by using molecular catalysts to co-catalyze nanostructure photoelectrodes with short diffusion length and such system can be stabilized by amorphous TiO2 layer.
A Molecular Cobaloxime Cocatalyst and Ultrathin FeOOH Nanolayers Co-Modified BiVO 4 Photoanode for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Abstract:BiVO 4 has been attracting a lot of interest in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation due to its efficient solar absorption and appropriate band positions.So far,sluggish water oxidation kinetics and fast photogenerated charge recombination still hinder the PEC performance of BiVO 4 .In this study,a novel PEC photoanode was designed by depositing ultrathin FeOOH nanolayers on the surface of nanoporous BiVO 4 electrode,followed by modification with a cobaloxime (Co(dmgH) 2 (4-COOH-py)Cl) molecular cocatalyst.Under irradiation of a 100 mW cm -2 (AM 1.5G) Xe lamp,the photocurrent density of the cobaloxime/FeOOH/BiVO 4 composite photoanode reached 5.1 mA cm -2 at 1.23 V vs.RHE in 1.0 M potassium borate buffer solution (pH=9.0).The onset potential of the optimal cobaloxime/FeOOH/BiVO 4 photoanode exhibited a 460 m V cathodic shift relative to bare BiVO 4 .In addition,the surface charge injection efficiency of the composite photoanode reached～80%at 1.23 V vs.RHE and the incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) reached～88%at 420 nm.

Abstract:This work reports the first synthesis and characterization of a ferroelectric perovskite oxide-based heterostructure as well as its application for photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalytical purposes. Specifically, exemplified by [KNbO3]1- x[BaNi1/2Nb1/2O3-δ] x (KBNNO), the ferroelectric perovskite oxides were prepared by solid-state synthesis, while the TiO2 nanorod (NR) arrays were obtained via a hydrothermal method. Using the technique of pulsed laser deposition (PLD), KBNNO were then deposited on TiO2 NRs to form KBNNO@TiO2 NR heterostructures. Various characterization techniques were applied to reveal compositional and structural information on the as-fabricated sample, and favorable alignment existed between the two components as displayed by the PEC test. In the detection of l-cysteine, the as-fabricated KBNNO@TiO2 NRs demonstrated good performance in terms of sensitivity and selectivity. This work revealed the potential of ferroelectric perovskite oxide and its heterostructures for innovative PEC bioanalytical applications, and we hope it will generate more interest in the development of various ferroelectrics-based heterostructures for advanced PEC bioanalysis.

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is a promising photoanode material for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, whereas its performance is inhibited by detrimental surface states. To solve the problem, herein, a low-cost organic molecule 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) is selected for surface passivation of BiVO 4 photoanodes (BVOs), which also provides bonding sites for Co 2+ to anchor, resulting in a Co-BTC-BVO photoanode. Owing to its strong coordination with metal ions, BTC not only passivates surface states of BVO, but also provides bonding between BVO and catalytic active sites (Co 2+ ) to form a molecular cocatalyst. Computational study and interfacial charge kinetic investigation reveal that chemical bonding formed at the interface greatly suppresses charge recombination and accelerates charge transfer. The obtained Co-BTC-BVO photoanode exhibits a photocurrent density of 4.82 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a low onset potential of 0.22 V RHE under AM 1.5 G illumination, which ranks among the best photoanodes coupled with Co-based cocatalysts. This work presents a novel selection of passivation layers and emphasizes the significance of interfacial chemical bonding for the construction of efficient photoanodes.

Abstract:BiVO4 is recognized as a promising semiconductor for photoelectrochemical (PEC) applications. However, the lack of synthesis methods to prepare high quality nanostructural BiVO4 film is rarely reported in the PEC field. In this study, we report a novel synthesis approach to prepare one-dimensional BiVO4 nanowire arrays using a multistep ion exchange approach through a solvothermal-hydrothermal annealing process. The resulting BiVO4 electrodes showed a nanorod structure with high porosity. In particular, the aspect ratio surface of the BiVO4 nanostructure was found favorable for its PEC application. The BiVO4 nanostructure with an optimized synthesized condition showed efficient PEC water oxidation with a photocurrent of 1.67 mA/cm(2) at 1.83 V (vs RHE).
