Abstract:Recently, a continuous dynamics was proposed to simulate dynamics of interpersonal relations in a society represented by a fully connected graph. Final state of such a society was found to be identical with the so-called Heider balance (HB), where the society is divided into two mutually hostile groups. In the continuous model, a polarization of opinions was found in HB. Here we demonstrate that the polarization occurs also in Barabasi-Albert networks, where the Heider balance is not necessarily present. In the second part of this work we demonstrate the results of our formalism, when applied to reference examples: the Southern women and the Zachary club.

Abstract:The Heider balance is a state of a group of people with established mutual relations between them. These relations, friendly or hostile, can be measured in the Bogardus scale of the social distance. In previous works on the Heider balance, these relations have been described with integers 0 and $\pm1$. Recently we have proposed real numbers instead. Also, differential equations have been used to simulate the time evolution of the relations, which were allowed to vary within a given range. In this work, we investigate an influence of this allowed range on the system dynamics. As a result, we have found that a narrowing of the range of relations leads to a large delay in achieving the Heider balance. Another point is that a slight shift of the initial distribution of the social distance towards friendship can lead to a total elimination of hostility.
Critical properties of Heider balance on multiplex networks

Abstract:Heider's structural balance theory has proven invaluable in comprehending the dynamics of social groups characterized by both friendly and hostile relationships. Since people's relations are rarely single-faceted, we investigate Heider balance dynamics on a multiplex network, consisting of several copies of the same agent displaying correlated relations at different layers building the multiplex. Intralayer interactions in our model adhere to Heider dynamics, while interlayer correlations stem from Ising interactions, with the heat bath dynamics of link signs. The investigations uncover a multifaceted system with a diverse equilibrium landscape contingent on the coexistence of distinct phases across layers. We observe that starting from a paradise state with positive links in all layers, an increase in temperature triggers a discontinuous transition to a disordered state akin to single-layer scenarios. The critical temperature surpasses that of the single-layer case, a fact verified through extended mean-field analysis and agent-based simulations. Furthermore, the scenario shifts when one layer exhibits a two-clique configuration instead of a paradise state. This change introduces additional transitions: synchronization of inter-layer relations and a transition to the disorder, appearing at a different, lower temperature compared to matching paradise states. This exploration shows the intricate interplay of Heider balance and multiplex interactions.

Onset of Intragroup Conflict in a Generalized Model of Social Balance

Abstract:Dynamically changing interpersonal relationships lie at the core of the emergence of in-group structures, such as polarity or conflict. We explore these dynamics in a simple continuous dynamical model obtained by generalizing a previously proposed model based on Heider's balance theory from social psychology. Previous findings include a rigorous proof of the emergence of in-group harmony or bipolar conflict (global minima) and the identification of local minima called jammed states, along with their corresponding energy spectrum in terms of structural complexity. However, some unrealistic scenarios constrain our capacity to contextualize and directly apply these results to real-world social behaviors. To address these challenges, we first introduce a unified dynamical model and find that group size can be critical to the onset of in-group bipolar conflict. Using random matrix statistics, we then characterize the pathways leading to jammed states, which have previously been discussed only in stochastic models. Unexpectedly, we also show that perturbing our dynamical model can increase the chances of getting trapped in jammed states, giving rise to a novel notion called the noise-induced jammed state. We conclude this Letter by discussing possible real-world implications as well as potential contributions to the existing literature in relevant fields such as anthropology.
Balance Correlations, Agentic Zeros, and Networks: The Structure of 192 Years of War and Peace

Abstract:Social network extensions of Heider's balance theory have not always been consistent. Structural balance theory primarily focuses on graph partitioning, thereby assuming, homogeneity in balance-driven behavior of nodes. We present a general model and formal notation that permit testing such behavioral assumptions. Specifically, we formulate statements as a comparison of two conditional probabilities of a tie, $Ego\stackrel{q}{\text{-}}Alter$, first conditional on 2-paths $Ego\, \stackrel{r}{\text{-}}\,X\,\stackrel{s}{\text{-}}\,Alter$, and second conditional on all others, $\neg (Ego\,\stackrel{r}{\text{-}}\,X\,\stackrel{s}{\text{-}}\,Alter)$. The key here is that $q$, $r$ and $s$ represent indices of relations in a set of mutually exclusive and exhaustive relations (their sum produces a complete graph). This relaxes the assumption of a signed graph dichotomy. Here we identify neutral as distinct from negative and positive ties. Descriptive statistics measuring the difference in conditional probabilities, or the prevalence for any stipulated balance configuration, are given by the point bi-serial correlations of relation $q$ with the count of $2$-paths (through relations $r$ and $s$). Two major advantages are: direct comparison, even if network sizes and densities differ, and evaluation of specific (un)balance behaviors. We apply this approach on a data set with friendly vs hostile relations between countries from 1816 to 2007. We find strong evidence for one of the four classic Heiderian balance theory predictions, and virtually no evidence in support of the unbalanced predictions. However, we do find stable and surprising evidence that the neutral ties are important in balancing the relations among nations. Results further suggest that prevalence of balance driven behavior varies over time, and that other triadic motivated behaviors prevail among countries in certain eras.

Abstract:We construct a model based on social balance theory proposed by Fritz Heider to analyze the interpersonal network among social agents. The model of social balance theory provides us an interesting tool to see how a social group evolves to the possible balance state. We introduce the balance index that can be used to measure social balance in macro structure level (global balance index) or in micro structure (local balance index) to see how the local balance index influences the global balance structure. Several experiments are done and we discover how the social group can form separation of subgroups in a group or strengthening a social group while emphasizing the structure theorem and social mitosis previously introduced.

Abstract:Recently a computational model has been proposed of the social integration, as described in sociological terms by Peter Blau. In this model, actors praise or critique each other, and these actions influence their social status and raise negative or positive emotions. The role of a self-deprecating strategy of actors with high social status has also been discussed there. Here we develop a mean field approach, where the active and passive roles (praising and being praised, etc.) are decoupled. The phase transition from friendly to hostile emotions has been reproduced, similarly to the previously applied purely computational approach. For both phases, we investigate the time dependence of the distribution of social status. There we observe a diffusive spread, which - after some transient time - appears to be limited from below or from above, depending on the phase. As a consequence, the mean status flows.

Abstract:We report our recent simulations on the social processes which -- in our opinion -- lie at the bottom of hate. First simulation deals with the so-called Heider balance where initial purely random preferences split the community into two mutually hostile groups. Second simulation shows that once these groups are formed, the cooperation between them is going to fail. Third simulation provides a numerical illustration of the process of biased learning; the model indicates that lack of objective information is a barrier to new information. Fourth simulation shows that in the presence of a strong conflict between communities hate is unavoidable.

Abstract:Heider's Balance Theory in signed networks, which consists of friendship or enmity relationships, is a model that relates the type of relationship between two people to the third person. In this model, there is an assumption of the independence of triadic relations, which means that the balance or imbalance of one triangle does not affect another and the energy only depends on the number of each type of triangle. There is evidence that in real network data, in addition to third-order interactions (Heider Balance), higher-order interactions also play a role. One step beyond the Heider Balance, the effect of Quartic Balance has been studied by removing the assumption of triangular independence. Application of quartic balance results in the influence of the balanced or imbalanced state of neighboring triangles on each specific one. Here, a question arises that how the Heider Balance is affected by the existence of Quartic Balance (fourth-order). The phase diagram obtained from the mean-field method shows there is a threshold for higher-order interaction strength, below which a third-order interaction dominates and there are no imbalance triangles in the network, and above this threshold, squares effectively determine the balance state in which the imbalance triangles can survive. The solution of the mean-field indicates that we have a first-order phase transition in terms of random behavior of agents (temperature) which is in accordance with the Monte Carlo simulation results.

Abstract:<p>Social balance theory describes allowable and forbidden configurations of the topologies of signed directed social appraisal networks. In this paper, we propose two discrete-time dynamical systems that explain how an appraisal network converges to social balance from an initially unbalanced configuration. These two models are based on two different socio-psychological mechanisms, respectively: the homophily mechanism and the influence mechanism. Our main theoretical contribution is a comprehensive analysis for both models in three steps. First, we establish the well-posedness and bounded evolution of the interpersonal appraisals. Second, we fully characterize the set of equilibrium points; for both models, each equilibrium network is composed of an arbitrary number of complete subgraphs satisfying structural balance. Third, we establish the equivalence among three distinct properties: non-vanishing appraisals, convergence to all-to-all appraisal networks, and finite-time achievement of social balance. In addition to theoretical analysis, Monte Carlo validations illustrate how the non-vanishing appraisal condition holds for generic initial conditions in both models. Moreover, a numerical comparison between the two models indicates that the homophily-based model might be a more universal explanation for the emergence of social balance. Finally, adopting the homophily-based model, we present numerical results on the mediation and globalization of local conflicts, the competition for allies, and the asymptotic formation of a single versus two factions.</p>

Abstract:Structural balance theory characterizes stable configurations of signed interpersonal appraisal networks. Existing models explaining the convergence of appraisal networks to structural balance either diverge in finite time, or could get stuck in jammed states, or converge to only complete graphs. In this paper, we study the open problem of how non-complete appraisal networks converge to structural balance while their graph topologies remain unchanged. Firstly, we present two established definitions of structural balance: the local balance and the global balance, which are equivalent in complete graphs but not in graphs with arbitrary topologies. The notion of local balance is characterized as "Friends' friends are not enemies; Friends' enemies are not friends; Enemies' friends are not friends; Enemies' enemies are not enemies.", which is a straightforward generalization of the famous Heider's axioms in structural balance theory. On the other hand, the global balance, widely adopted in the modeling of opinion dynamics, means that the appraisal network can be divided into two antagonistic factions. We propose two mechanisms: the symmetry-influence-homophily (SIH) dynamics and the symmetry-influence-opinion-homophily (SIOH) dynamics, in which the appraisal networks almost surely achieve the local balance (for certain initial conditions) and the global balance (for any initial condition) in finite time respectively. Along these dynamics, the connection patterns of the appraisal networks remain unchanged and thereby avoid evolving into complete graphs. Furthermore, we provide certain graph-theoretical conditions on which the local balance is equivalent to the global balance. In addition, numerical studies of our dynamics indicate some insightful take-home messages, e.g., whether multilateral relations reduce or exacerbate conflicts.

Abstract:The abundance of data about social relationships allows the human behavior to be analyzed as any other natural phenomenon. Here we focus on balance theory, stating that social actors tend to avoid establishing cycles with an odd number of negative links. This statement, however, can be supported only after a comparison with a benchmark. Since the existing ones disregard actors' heterogeneity, we extend Exponential Random Graphs to signed networks with both global and local constraints and employ them to assess the significance of empirical unbalanced patterns. We find that the nature of balance crucially depends on the null model: while homogeneous benchmarks favor the weak balance theory, according to which only triangles with one negative link should be under-represented, heterogeneous benchmarks favor the strong balance theory, according to which also triangles with all negative links should be under-represented. Biological networks, instead, display strong frustration under any benchmark, confirming that structural balance inherently characterizes social networks.

Abstract:Homophily and social influence are the fundamental mechanisms that drive the evolution of attitudes, beliefs and behaviour within social groups. Homophily relates the similarity between pairs of individuals' attitudinal states to their frequency of interaction, and hence structural tie strength, while social influence causes the convergence of individuals' states during interaction. Building on these basic elements, we propose a new mathematical modelling framework to describe the evolution of attitudes within a group of interacting agents. Specifically, our model describes sub-conscious attitudes that have an activator-inhibitor relationship. We consider a homogeneous population using a deterministic, continuous-time dynamical system. Surprisingly, the combined effects of homophily and social influence do not necessarily lead to group consensus or global monoculture. We observe that sub-group formation and polarisation-like effects may be transient, the long-time dynamics being quasi-periodic with sensitive dependence to initial conditions. This is due to the interplay between the evolving interaction network and Turing instability associated with the attitudinal state dynamics.

Abstract:Starting from a symmetrical multiple choice individual I build a sociophysics model of decision making. Reducing the choices to two and interactions to pairs recover the Ising model from physics at zero temperature. The associated equilibrium state is a spontaneous symmetry breaking with the whole group sharing a unique choice selected at random. However, my focus departs from physics, which aims at identifying the true equilibrium state discarding any possible impact of the initial conditions, the size of the sample and the used update algorithm. Any memory of the past history is erased. In contrast, I claim that dealing with a social system, the history of the system must be taken into account in identifying the relevant social equilibrium state. Using Monte Carlo simulations I explore the spectrum of non universal equilibrium states of the Ising model at zero temperature. I show that different initial conditions with the same value of the order parameter lead to different equilibrium states. The same applies for different sizes and different update algorithms. The results indicate that in the presence of a social network composed of agents sharing different initial opinions, it is their interactions that lead them to share a unique choice and not their mere membership in the network. This finding sheds a new light on the emergence of echo chambers, which appear to be the end of a dynamical process of opinion update and not its beginning with a preferential attachment. Furthermore, polarization is obtained as a side effect of the random selection of the respective unanimous choices of the various echo chambers within a social community. The study points to social media exchange algorithms, which are purely technical levers independent of the issue and opinions at stake, to tackle polarization by either hindering or accelerating the completion of symmetry breaking between agents.

Abstract:Polarization, understood as a division into mutually hostile groups, is a common feature of social systems. It is studied in Structural Balance Theory (SBT) in terms of semicycles in signed networks. However, enumerating semicycles is computationally expensive, so approximations are often needed. Here we introduce Multiscale Semiwalk Balance (MSB) approach for measuring degree of balance (DoB) in (un)directed, (un)weighted signed networks by approximating semicycles with closed semiwalks. It allows for selection of the resolution of analysis appropriate for assessing DoB motivated by Locality Principle (LP), which posits that patterns in shorter cycles are more important than in longer ones. Our approach overcomes several limitations affecting walk-based approximations, and provides methods for assessing DoB at various scales, from graphs to individual nodes, and for clustering signed networks. We demonstrate its effectiveness by applying it to real-world social systems, for which it produces explainable results consistent with expectations based on domain-specific knowledge.

Abstract:Friendship and antipathy exist in concert with one another in real social networks. Despite the role they play in social interactions, antagonistic ties are poorly understood and infrequently measured. One important theory of negative ties that has received relatively little empirical evaluation is balance theory, the codification of the adage `the enemy of my enemy is my friend' and similar sayings. Unbalanced triangles are those with an odd number of negative ties, and the theory posits that such triangles are rare. To test for balance, previous works have utilized a permutation test on the edge signs. The flaw in this method, however, is that it assumes that negative and positive edges are interchangeable. In reality, they could not be more different. Here, we propose a novel test of balance that accounts for this discrepancy and show that our test is more accurate at detecting balance. Along the way, we prove asymptotic normality of the test statistic under our null model, which is of independent interest. Our case study is a novel dataset of signed networks we collected from 32 isolated, rural villages in Honduras. Contrary to previous results, we find that there is only marginal evidence for balance in social tie formation in this setting.

Assessing frustration in real-world signed networks: a statistical theory of balance

Abstract:According to the so-called strong version of structural balance theory, actors in signed social networks avoid establishing triads with an odd number of negative links. Generalising, the weak version of balance theory allows for nodes to be partitioned into any number of blocks with positive internal links, mutually connected by negative links. If this prescription is interpreted rigidly, i.e. without allowing for statistical noise in the observed link signs, then most real graphs will appear to require a larger number of blocks than the actual one, or even to violate both versions of the theory. This might lead to conclusions invoking even more relaxed notions of balance. Here, after rephrasing structural balance theory in statistically testable terms, we propose an inference scheme to unambiguously assess whether a real-world, signed graph is balanced. We find that the proposed statistical balance theory leads to interpretations that are quite different from those derived from the current, deterministic versions of the theory.

Abstract:Triadic relationships are accepted to play a key role in the dynamics of social and political networks. Building on insights gleaned from balance theory in social network studies and from Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical physics, we propose a model to quantitatively capture the dynamics of the four types of triadic relationships in a network. Central to our model are the triads' incidence rates and the idea that those can be modeled by assigning a specific triadic energy to each type of triadic relation. We emphasize the role of the degeneracy of the different triads and how it impacts the degree of frustration in the political network. In order to account for a persistent form of disorder in the formation of the triadic relationships, we introduce the systemic variable temperature. In order to learn about the dynamics and motives, we propose a generic Hamiltonian with three terms to model the triadic energies. One term is connected with a three-body interaction that captures balance theory. The other terms take into account the impact of heterogeneity and of negative edges in the triads. The validity of our model is tested on four datasets including the time series of triadic relationships for the standings between two classes of alliances in a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG). We also analyze real-world data for the relationships between the "agents" involved in the Syrian civil war, and in the relations between countries during the Cold War era. We find emerging properties in the triadic relationships in a political network, for example reflecting itself in a persistent hierarchy between the four triadic energies, and in the consistency of the extracted parameters from comparing the model Hamiltonian to the data.
